The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Aaron Ramsey returns home and ensures that his Fantasy bandwagon accelerates once more. Meanwhile, over at Goodison, a Spanish starlet grasps his opportunity, whilst Roberto Martinez’ teamsheet is just one of several to cause Fantasy managers some early concern.

The Game Changer

The script seemed almost too perfect – Aaron Ramsey returning to his hometown club in the form of his life. Having blanked in his last two, those Fantasy managers who had, to this point, resisted his bandwagon had begun to cling to the hope that his output had regressed. While it was written in the stars that Ramsey would light up once again in Cardiff, there was every chance that the home side would battle and deny the Welshman to frustrate Arsenal’s title charge.

Typically, in an incredible season, Ramsey was to stick to the “Roy of the Rovers” script. A brace of goals took his tally to eight for the season, while the inevitable maximum bonus will have him soar away to the top of the Fantasy Premier League midfield rankings.

Ramsey’s rise to heavy-hitter Fantasy status is quite simply remarkable. It’s also compounded by the fact that, to this point, there’s been no real contender to rival his output. The likes of Eden Hazard, Yaya Toure and Oscar remain in his wake, despite their far loftier price tags.

Just when it seemed the Welshman’s form had stalled, his rise in ownership slowed, today’s events have seen his relentless bandwagon pick up speed again. Once more, those who have dared to ignore the Gunners man now face the indignity of swallowing their pride and coughing up a fee almost 2.0 more than his initial value, whilst having to accept that his points will help them make little ground but only aid them in keeping pace with the majority above them.

The Underused

Gerard Deulofeu has been straining at the leash at Goodison, awaiting his chance to add to a string of eye-catching cameos from the bench. Today’s decision by Roberto Martinez to hand the Barcelona loanee his first Premier League start stung those holding Kevin Mirallas, while Deulofeu’s performance will have given them, and the Everton boss, food for thought.

A goal and assist provided the returns, but Deulofeu sparkled throughout as he tormented Stoke and underlined his claims for regular Everton starts. Mirallas now faces a real battle to earn a recall for Wednesday’s trip to Man United, while Martinez will know that it’s going to prove very difficult to play down Deulofeu’s claims from this point on.

For Fantasy managers, the Spaniard’s potential is limited, if not almost killed, by his classification as a forward in the FPL. Even with a modest 5.4 price tag, few will really consider moving for the loanee, given just how precious and profitable our slots up front have become. Instead, Deulofeu’s impact this season could be limited to killing off Mirallas as a Fantasy option. Ironic, given that the Belgian enjoyed only his second double figure return against Liverpool last weekend.

The Selection Poser

With December’s strenuous schedule set to stretch our bench resources to their fullest, today provided a real warning shot across the bows. An array of popular budget and mid-price Fantasy assets found themselves rotated to the bench as the likes of Mirallas, Ross Barkley, Ravel Morrison and Michael Turner were all ousted.

While Mirallas’ rotation with Gerard Deulofeu was always looming, few would have expected it to follow his Merseyside derby display. The Belgian has started every one of Everton’s league outings before today and, while he could well return at Old Trafford in midweek, his security of starts must now be in question.

Barkley’s rotation risk is nothing new – although again, it’s somewhat surprising to see his precocious talent dropped to the bench following a convincing display against Liverpool.

Morrison’s plight also took us by surprise. Having started the previous nine league matches, the former United starlet had seemed settled in Sam Allardyce’s lineup and, with the Hammers struggling for goals, he had seemed the most likely to provide a spark.

An assist off the bench should ensure that Morrison will not be a major concern, but it offers a reminder that few of us can afford to approach the Christmas period without secure starters on the bench. With Michael Turner also looking set to face a battle to regain his Norwich starting role ahead of Seb Bassong and Ryan Bennett, today undoubtedly cast a question mark over a batch of budget talent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    To bring in Ramsey...

    A) Downgrade Rooney (and have no United cover)

    B) Downgrade Ozil

    C) Downgrade Zabaleta (-4)

    D) Downgrade Oscar (and have no Chelsea cover)

    best option is ??

That's a right toughie. Probably C, as having a defender priced over 6 can limit you elsewhere and there are plenty cheaper defenders of considerable quality that can give you similar aspects of a Zabaleta. Take Davies from Swansea, for example. Only priced at 5 and attacks like Zaba. Shaw, Debuchy, and Rangel are just some other ideas. You might give up a little on the cleansheet side of things, but there's always something to consider/give up when making a transfer.

Would Clyne or Luna or Vlaar be a significant downgrade on Zabaleta ?

Having them one of them gives me the chance for a dream midfield and attack.

It's probably a bit of a downgrade with either. Clyne, however, might just give Zaba a race. If you're considering Vlaar, would be worth it to consider Ciaran Clark as well. He's .1 cheaper and probably offers more goal threat. Debuchy worth considering as well in the cheaper lands, as is Ryan Bennett. I was backing Bennett hard all week, but didn't pick him up myself because of other issues. He got a cleany and 2 bonus.

Southampton have a tricky run, though. That's my only concern with him. I just looked. I'd lean towards a Villa defender like Clark or Vlaar if you lookin' to spend low.

Trading Rangel out this week most likely. Money isn't really an issue.

    Have a fair few options:
.Debuchy - Nailed on. GW 16-18 easy.
.Evans - Looks to be nailed on. Cheapest at 5.0. Good fixtures till GW16.
.Jones - Same with Evans and playing OOP.
.Cahill - Good fixtures till GW 16. Rotation risk.

What you think? Going any yourself?

That second combination will probably get you more points because of Gerrard alone. Not sold on Kasami though, and for my money, I would get R. Bennett instead of M. Olsson from Norwich. Of course, they're both cheap, so gut call there. Did Olsson play OOP today?

Yes. I think so. Walcott will get as many points as Ozil once he's up and running. He should start vs. Hull and he's chompin' at the bit. Was on for all of 5 minutes today and was eager as anyone I've ever seen to get goals and assists. If he had played the full 90 today, he woulda cleaned up.

I think Ramsey's production will be hampered by the return of Theo. 2 reasons. First Arsenal's goals seem to be coming from play straight down the middle at the moment with little bits of magic from Ozil & Ramsey and Theo will bring back width to their play. Second disregard first comment, Ramsey will sink a hat trick into Hull with Theo's return. fml

You ever wish you could have a wildcard every week? Just when you get your team in order, it seems like it's time to blow it all up. Crikes! Leftover turkey tonight.....surprise.

    What transfer needed this week?

    Boruc

    Terry Mertesacker Pieters

    Hazard Ramsey Oscar Cabaye

    Suarez Aguero Rooney

Subs are fine and don't need changing right now. Boruc out maybe?

I'd rather be in your position than his.
He needs Hazard to get a big haul, and hope that Januzaj gets more than a cameo. That and Skrtel likely to get a clean sheet.

It's not about him being cheap or expensive, it's about me losing 0.1 in selling value, which will drastically affect my ability to bring in the other big hitting mids I want...

I think that Ashley Williams is a decent pick. Swansea have a decent (but not great) run of fixtures, including two in a row at home. It all depends on wheyher you brlieve they can keep clean sheets.

What should be the plan for this gw?

    Boruc Myhill
    GJ Koscielny AWilliams Coleman Chester
    SESSEGNON Oscar Hazard Ramsey JANUZAJ
    Aguero Suarez BENTEKE
    1FT, 0.6itb

    A: Benteke out
    B: Sessegnon out
    C: Both out for -4
    D: Januzaj out.

I'm at a loss about who to bring in, but C would at least afford some flexibility...

ML leader = Boruc, Clyne, Terry, Jazzanaj, Yaya, Coutinho, [Aguero(C)]

    VS

Me = Zabaleta, Evans, Rooney [Suarez(C)]

He has 35 points on me.

Now, I know its a longshot, but if Rooney and Suarez go wild, City keep a CS with Aguero missing a peno and getting RC, MU CS and Che/Sot 1-1 I might just go top.

Hey GTS u here? Sorry didnt reply earlier.. had to log off.

Plan for negredo is switch gw16 to lukaku but my team looks pretty good fixture wise till then.. bar any injuries I might actually swap back to rooney gw15 and then gw 16 swap rooney out for lukaku and shaw or dawson out for jagielka.. thats bar any injueries though so might not. Have 2.0 in the bank

    GW14:

    Migs (Boruc)
    Coleman | Chico | Terry | Chester | Vlaar
    Oscar | Gerrard | Redmond | Brady | Ramsey
    Lukaku | Aguero | Suarez

Really want to get Merte or Kosc in but I only have 0.2m in the bank and want to get rid of Chico. Need to find 0.6m from somewhere in the team but don't really know where.

    Suggestions?

I see why Chico is on thin ice. But I would keep for a few weeks (two home games upcoming).
If you must, would Gerrard to Coutinho give you enough?

Chico is not the correct move. Transition expects Swans to improve defensively. Surely don't you think. Dump Coleman =perfect timing.

Dump Luk I think so. It all ends here for Everton. In my FF book.
