The Watchlist Updated – The Midfield

Having analysed the Defence in yesterday’s first instalment, we move onto the men in the centre of the park as we roll out our recommended player picks for the next four to six Gameweeks. Chelsea’s Belgian sensation continues to lead the way after last night’s stunning performance against the Black Cats, while Arsenal’s two main protagonists retain lofty positions despite a testing run to follow:

Eden Hazard retains top spot after another devastating display in last night’s win at Sunderland. With Oscar missing out against the Black Cats due to an ankle injury, the Belgian delivered his fourth set of double figures in the last seven Gameweeks for the Blues – a trip to Stoke and home games against Palace and Swansea in the next four look set to see him plunder the points again.

Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil remain in the top five refresh, with an assist and goal respectively in last night’s win over Hull. The Gunners’ schedule is far from straightforward, though – home games against Everton and Chelsea bookend a trip to the Etihad in the next three. Those with more than one of Arsene Wenger’s attacking options may look elsewhere in light of such a schedule. Theo Walcott is further down the rankings – he has still yet to start a match since returning from injury, with his manager explaining he was no more than a sub against Steve Bruce’s side after failing to train over the past week due to illness.

Steven Gerrard’s outstanding consistency earns him the nod over midfield team-mate Philippe Coutinho. An assist in last night’s win over Norwich means the Reds skipper has now earned his owners attacking returns in eight of the last nine Gameweeks – Liverpool’s next three home matches (WHM, CAR, HUL) could barely be more appetising but trips to Spurs, City and Chelsea somewhat lessen his appeal. Yohan Cabaye has also delivered on a regular basis. The 6.5-priced Newcastle midfielder has scored or assisted in six of the last 10 and has home games against Southampton and Stoke in addition to a trip to Palace in the next four – the downside is that he remains on the Suspension Tightrope and is just a single caution away from a one-match ban.

Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri have the form but three of the next four fixtures are a little tricky for City. A visit to Southampton and home games against Arsenal and Liverpool look a real test for Manuel Pellegrini’s men as they attempt to maintain the last 100% home record in the top-flight. The Ivorian is the pricier of the pair, at 9.6 to 8.2, though this is vindicated by his consistency – Toure has now scored or assisted in nine of the first 14 Gameweeks compared to Nasri’s seven. The latter remains a real differential, though, and currently sits in less than 6% of FPL teams.

Stephane Sessegnon’s stock took a real dive after he was benched for last night’s home loss to City. With rotation kicking in, though, we expect him to return to the fold as Steve Clarke’s side brace themselves for home games against Norwich and Hull, with a trip to Cardiff sandwiched in between. Chris Brunt offers a cheaper route into the Baggies midfield for such a schedule – coming in at 5.0 to Sessegnon’s 6.6, he has scored or assisted in three of the last five.

Nathan Redmond, Barry Bannan and Peter Whittingham are the stand-out budget selections on offer in this week’s refresh. Coming in at just 4.6, Redmond looks a secure pick in light of injuries to Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington on the flanks – trips to West Brom and Sunderland supplement the visits of Swansea and Fulham in the next four for Chris Hughton’s side. Bannan is even cheaper at 4.4 and has played a part in each of Palace’s last two goals – he welcomes Cardiff, Newcastle and Norwich to Selhurst Park in the next six and also travels to Villa.

Whittingham (5.1) pays visit to Palace before three home games in four (WBA, SOT, SUN) and heads the queue for set-pieces and spot-kicks for Cardiff. As mentioned in yesterday’s defenders piece, Malky Mackay’s side rotate home/away perfectly with Palace all the way up to Gameweek 27 – some Fantasy managers are eyeing up a cut-price Bannan/Whittingham partnership to take advantage of what looks a very kind run of matches.

Antonio Valencia has started the last five for United and, whilst he has managed just a goal and assist all season, has a very enticing schedule on his agenda. Home games with Newcastle and West Ham are supplemented by trips to Villa, Hull and Norwich and, at 7.1, he could appeal as a mid-price punt as David Moyes looks to recover from last night’s loss to former club Everton – a move to right-back midway through the Toffees defeat is somewhat worrying, though.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not really, if those are your only 4 problems you can still put out 11 even without using your FT. I wouldn't ditch RavMo, but depending on Oscar injury update he might be the one to go.

What are people doing with Oscar? Trying to move him to Hazard or waiting for injury news.

My mini league rival has Hazard and it worries me after last night. Think about just matching him.

Nah just using my FT on it. My team is a shambles with Roo, RavMo and Clyne but I want to keep Roo and Rav and theres no obvious replacement for Clyne at 4.6 so might just do this transfer and field a weak side this week in order to feel the benefits later

Keeping Rooney, will probably lose Ravel to back in for Amalfitano next week which may fund a Howard move. Selling Clyne to a cheapie as his fixtures take a turn for the worse and the funds made are vital.

I have a price movements issue.

Plan was to save the transfer this week and do Nasri & Giroud -> Hazard & Lukaku for free next week.

However, I only have 0.2m of wiggle room, and with Lukaku definitely rising tonight and Hazard probably rising tonight, they would both have to avoid a rise on Friday night to enable me to still be able to make the double trade on Saturday. I think this is very 50:50.

Is it worth taking a hit and doing both tonight/this week?

I posted this earlier but got zero replies 🙁

I am getting fed up of Brady recently. If I sell him for Bannan this week I could rotate him with Ravel Morrison for the next six fixtures: CAR, SUN, NEW, avl, WBA, NOR.

What do people think of that transfer?

        Mignolet
        Distin / Chico / Gabbidon / Terry
        Hazard / Coutinho / Ramsey / Brady
        Suarez / Aguero

Lewis, Rosenior, Rooney, Morrison, 0.3 in the bank.

I've got Morrison suspended but I like his rotation with any of Bannan/Redmond/Whitt. Brady is so frustrating, he's been playing real far back last few games

He was really bright against Liverpool, definitely on my watchlist. Compared to Bannan and Whitt, he sort of pales in comparison though don't you think? One's cheaper and has provided more points recently, the other has been fairly consistent and on set pieces..

Finally had a massive score last GW with 107, gaining 32 points on my main rival.

    With this lot:

    Myhill (4.0)

    GJ - Coleman - Gabbidon

    Ramsey - Hazard(VC) - Özil - Cabaye

    Lukaku - Suarez (C) - Aguero

    Turner - Collins - Ravel.

    2.3m in the bank.

    A) Save it?
    B) Cabaye -> mid up to 8.6
    C) Cabaye and GJ -> Yaya and 4.7 def

Final posting for the lunchtime crowd....

For those that have Boruc / Mannone combo......I've been looking at who to pair with Mannone until GW24 (end of Winter wildcard).

    SUN/CAR: cpl,WBA,NOR,SOT,SUN,AVL,WHM,SOT,STO,NOR
All home games after this GW BUT the opposing fixture is always tough, so if one of 2 keepers is crocked it's risky or if Mannone is dropped for Westwood.

    SUN/ARS: EVE,whm,NOR,whm,car,CAR,avl,FUL,STO,CPL
After Xmas, both teams have a good run, so if either keeper is crocked/rotated then gives options and for me I don't have Mertesacker.

    SUN/MAN:NEW,avl,NOR,hul,car,AVL,SWA,SOT,CAR,sto
The highest scoring pairing according to members RMT tool but De Gea is expensive

    SUN/CPL: CAR,whm,NOR,avl,car,NOR,ful,STO,HUL,new
Also looks like a good combo, with flip a coin options some weeks.

    Any thoughts?

    Coleman MURNER Clyne Chico Chester
    MORRISON Brady Hazard Ramsey Sess
    ROONEY Aguero Suarez

Caps players are unlikely to feature at the weekend. So which transfer route is best?

    B) Replace Ravel and go 3-5-2

replace Rooney with a cheaper player, use the funds to improve elsewhere. Jump on the Lukaku wagon, or go with Remy for 2nd choice bandwagon or go for a differential like Crouch (te he he)

As the Bonus Points issues continue to be a focus for debate around the forum I thought I’d have a look at how a Metro style system could work in the FPL game.

In the Metro game there are no bonuses and scoring is based purely on OPTA stats. The players with the highest scores in theory are the best players on the pitch based on OPTA stats. But how do they compare with those players that get Bonus Points in the FPL game?

Below is a list of Gameweek 14 bonus allocation for FPL and who would have got bonus if the pure OPTA system that Metro uses was applied.

    WBA 2 v 3 Manc City

    FPL- Yaya (3), Kolorov (2), Anichebe (2)
    Metro - Yaya (3) Aguero (2) Yacob (1)

    Crystal Palace 1 v 0 West Ham

    FPL- Chamakh (3), Speroni(2),Ward(2),Moxey(2),Gabbidon(2),Delaney (2), Bannan(2)
    Metro- Collins (3), Gabbidon (2), Chamakh (1), Delaney (1).

    Liverpool 5 v 1 Norwich

    FPL Suarez (3), Sterling (2), Redmond (1).
    Metro Suarez (3), Sterling (2), B Johnson (1).

    Arsenal 2 v 0 Hull

    FPL Ozil (3), Jenkinson (3), Bendtner (1).
    Metro Ozil (3) Monreal (2), Ramsey (1).

    Manchester Utd 0 v 1 Everton

    FPL Jagielka (3), Oviedo (2) Coleman (2).
    Metro Oviedo (3), Jagielka (2) Coleman (1).

    Southampton 2 v 3 Villa

    FPL Delph (3), Agbonlahor (2), Rodriguez (1).
    Metro Rodriguez (3), Lallana (2), Delph (1).

    Stoke 0 v 0 Cardiff

    FPL Shawcross (3), Caulker (2), G Cameron (2).
    Metro Caulker (3), Shawcross (2), Kevin Theo-Cath (1).

    Sunderland 3 v 4 Chelsea

    FPL Hazard (3), Lampard (2), O'Shea (1).
    Metro Hazard (3), O'Shea (2), Lampard (1).

    Swansea 3 v 0 Newcastle

    FPL Shelvey (3), Chico (2), Davies (1).
    Metro Shelvey (3), Chico (2), Davies (1).

    Fulham 1 v 2 Tottenham

    FPL Walker (3), Chiriches (2), Holtby (2).
    Metro Chiriches (3), Dejagah (2), Walker (1).

As you can see there are some similarities and many variants as to who would benefit.

In my opinion the Metro gives a better overall picture of each game.

    Long Post Alert. 😉

I wonder if you can compare the differences in scores to the game's Hot Spot stats?

Anyone know? I have no intention of doing it, just interested.

By the way, what I said earlier about Hazard's fantasy points being restricted because of a lack of a scoring striker with him remains true: he could have got 3 or 4 assists last night had Chelsea had one single striker who knows how to finish.

How does this look going forward?

    Howard
    Terry, Merte, Coleman, Jagielka
    Hazard, Oscar, Ramsey,
    Aguero, Suarez, Rooney

    Gabiddon, Morrison, Delph, Harper

I really want the triple Everton defense so I might have to take a hit for it this week due to price rises.

I like the moxie of triple Everton, but I wouldn't risk it as you have no idea way to get Lukaku. You might not want him now, but that could change.

A hit to triple up on Everton away to Arsenal sounds pretty crazy.

Any swanea fans on here. Pozuelo likely to keep his place? Looks a great budget option at £4.2m.

No. Rotation. Look at their injuries/games so far. You can see he's only in to plug holes.

Not a Swansea fan, but certainly one worth looking at. Can only assume the lack of interest round here suggests he's prone to rotation. Him Bannan or Shelvey look to be the best budget options at the moment.

I'd rather have a £4.2m none starter that does gets minutes rather than a £5m non starter that gets vritually none as I currently have.
