Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 16 – The Strong

After the hectic Christmas schedule was inaugurated with our first midweek set of matches, our regular assessment of the fixture list for the next four-to-six Gameweeks spans the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day games. First up, a look at those teams with pleasant-looking schedules – a handful of teams targeting Champions League places arrive on our radar, whilst some budget-price considerations from the other end of the table also rear their heads:

Everton

everton16
A well-deserved point at the Emirates underlined the Toffees’ strong form – Roberto Martinez’ side have only lost one of their matches all season. With three home games in the next four, along with visits to Swansea, Stoke and Norwich in the next six, many Fantasy managers are even considering a Toffees triumvirate.

Five clean sheets in the last seven games makes investment in Everton’s defence a smart move. Tim Howard sits top of the goalkeeper rankings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, whilst Seamus Coleman and Phil Jagielka are first and second for defenders respectively. Further up the field, the picture is a little murkier. On-loan Barcelona starlet Gerard Deulofeu has caught the eye but his classification as a forward means his only Fantasy impact is to dent the appeal of Kevin Mirallas. Martinez continues to use Ross Barkley a little too sparingly for comfort, whilst Romelu Lukaku has attacking returns in all but three of his 11 games.

Man United

united16
A miserable week for David Moyes saw United’s form wane once again but they may be buoyed by a splendid set of forthcoming Christmas fixtures. West Ham are the only visitors to Old Trafford in the next four games but, given United’s dismal form in front of their own fans, that’s no bad thing. Trips to Aston Villa, Hull and Norwich look profitable and, after that, a home game against Swansea could also deliver points.

Many may wish to steer clear of a defence with one clean sheet in 11 games, but for those who believe the tide will turn, Jonny Evans is well priced and, despite a rest against Everton, is thought to be in favour – his stock has been boosted by the fact that Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Chris Smalling all missed out on last night’s Champions League win over Shakhtar through injury. Similarly to last term, United’s midfield has failed to come to the Fantasy party this season, despite flashes of potential shown by Adnan Januzaj. Thankfully for Fantasy managers, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are now both back from suspension and injury.

Newcastle

newcastle16
Newcastle remain inconsistent, with a win at Old Trafford following a hammering by Swansea. However, three home games in the next four, combined with a trip to Crystal Palace means the Magpies are a potentially profitable outfit for Fantasy managers with plenty of differential appeal.

A clean sheet at Old Trafford hints at potential defensive returns – particularly if Tim Krul can continue his recent level of shot stopping which has delivered two double-figure hauls in five. In defence, Mathieu Debuchy has a history of attacking intent, whilst in midfield, Yohan Cabaye’s one-match ban is an irritation for owners and suitors alike, given that he has delivered a goal or assist in all but three of his last 11 appearances. Meanwhile, Löic Remy has suffered a rare pair of blanks recently but many will expect to see him return to form.

Norwich

norwich16
Three wins in the five games since the mauling at the Etihad have steadied the Canaries’ cage and given Chris Hughton reason to be chirpy. They now have three home games and a trip to Sunderland in the next four to capitalise on that form, whilst a trip to Crystal Palace could also prove profitable.

Two clean sheets in three games make a solid case for Norwich’s cut-price defensive assets, especially as they rotate well with those of Crystal Palace. Martin Olsson appears to be the most secure option after Michael Turner’s surprise omission for two of the last three games. In midfield, former Everton target Leroy Fer has emerged as a strong differential with three goals and an assist in his last five games. Additionally, at 4.6, Nathan Redmond could offer a budget midfield option, at least until Anthony Pilkington and/or Robert Snodgrass return from injury.

ALSO CONSIDER

Cardiff City
The loss to Crystal Palace was a bitter blow for Malky Mackay’s team, but they will take heart from the prospect of some winnable fixtures over the next six – West Brom, Southampton, Sunderland and West Ham all pay visit to the Bluebirds. David Marshall has proven a popular replacement for the injured Artur Boruc, while Ben Turner is the defender of choice. With a goal and three assists, Pete Whittingham has emerged as the safest midfield option, but Cardiff attacking points seem generally hard to come by.

Hull
A hard-earned point at Swansea on Monday evening underlined the gritty determination that may keep Steve Bruce’s side in the Premier League. Three favourable fixtures in the next four (STO, wba, FUL) look good for points, particularly at the back – James Chester is now 3.8 due to his early-season injury. Robbie Brady presents a conundrum for his owners, though. Once the budget midfielder of choice, his protracted recovery from a hernia operation has left him off form and out of favour. Danny Graham opened his account for the Tigers against his old club, but it is unlikely to persuade Fantasy managers to exchange their big-hitting strikers for him.

Sunderland
Having come within a goal of claiming points against both Chelsea and Tottenham, Gus Poyet will be looking forward to some better fixtures to try to haul his team out of the mire. With Norwich and Aston Villa rolling up to the Stadium of Light and trips to West Ham, Cardiff and Fulham, Fantasy managers scouting for differentials may be tempted by the Wearsiders. The goalkeeper situation is a little murky – with Kieren Westwood nearing fitness, Vito Mannone will be hoping to retain his place. However, Wes Brown appears to have caught his manager’s eye and presents a budget-friendly option, while Phil Bardsley has scored twice in the last five. In midfield, Adam Johnson opened his account for the season against Spurs though doesn’t seem nailed on under the new manager, while Steven Fletcher looks a first-choice pick up top, regardless of whether Poyet rolls out a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1.

You can try but the bookies win in the end. I'm happy to discuss the finer details of betting with you but their reality is they WILL win - you might win 2 bets in a row even 4 or 5 but when you get stung once you've lost all your winnings and then some......play recurring theme over and over

The things this game does to a person.

My mood has taken a significant upturn at the news that my key differential (Chiriches) might - *might* - play this weekend. I should talk to my doctor about that.

No no. It's not just you.

If I have a bad GW, it ruins my whole weekend. I can't think of anything else...

If one of my competitors players gets injured/a yellow/red card/benched etc I am extremely happy.

If I have been toiling about how to bring in a player, not wanting to take any of mine out and then one of mine gets injured. I am happy and then can make the transfer knowing i'm not loosing out on points.
      etc etc... 🙁

-Suarez is in great form + but Liverpool is playing a tuff team (tot)
-Hazard looks to be playing great + good fixture (cry)
-Lukaku good form + "ok" fixture (ful)
    -Captain pools say Lukaku

Since there's no outstanding options this week, maybe it would be the perfect opportunity to captain someone unexpected (a defender or a mid-priced midfielder, for example) and try to close the gap to your mini-league leaders. That's what I'm doing, sometimes we've got to risk!

    Chico Dawson Clyne BTurner Gabbidon

    Whittingham Kasami Özil Ramsey Hazard

    Rooney Aguero Suarez

0,0m in bank and 2 freebies.

But I'd be worried about the way Rooney played yesterday when van Persie came on. I know he can punish regardless of where he plays, but a deeper role is anything but encouraging -- especially when you play on the road. I'm thinking of going all in and captaining an Everton defender.

Yes he did drop very deep. But I wouldn't look too much into it, as RVP came on rather late and I think we were very cautious of losing a goal. Hence Rooney dropped to control the tempo of the game. Which he usually does, though too often for my liking.

I highly highly doubt Rooney will be playing deep against Villa. Any signs of negative football and Moyes will be under greater pressure. Especially against a villa team that has been conceding for free recently

That's what we (Rooney owners) hope for, mate! Moyes will be desperate for the win, indeed, coming from back-to-back league defeats. Provided van Persie starts, though, Rooney will inevitably be deployed to the 'in the hole' role. I do agree Villa will concede, it's just a question of predicting whether Rooney will be as effective (in terms of Fantasy points) as he was in van Persie's absence, now that Lukaku (and other options) have some very good fixtures ahead themselves.

If you add 5 + 4 you get 9 and if you divide 5 by 5 you get 1.

        So 19(5+4)(5/5)

        = 1991

Which is the same going forward as it is going backwards.

I have Ward-Prowse as a stop-gap sub for when I have injuries or suspensions, like the suspension I have with Chico, his 4.2 value means I can maximize my value on my starting XI. I am nervous about captaining him as he is relatively inconsistent, however he has the ability to explode and is in good form right now, so worth the risk in my opinion.

I'm not, no, so i don't really know why I'm worried, I suppose if nothing else, he's just an extra fit sub, I'm already one of them down with Clyne.

Currently have a front line of
    Gerrard, Lampard, Shelvey, Morrison, Ramsey
    Lukaku, Aguero, Suarez

Already used by FT this week but need to get rid of Gerrard and Lampard (due to the imminent xmas rotation)

Players I am looking at are Oscar, Hazard, Silva, Nasri and Coutinho. However with only 0.5m in the bank ive got no idea which combination to use?!?!

Precisely the point i was trying to make! Howard as the only playing keeper is a better scenario than having potentially having to play double Cardiff defence.

For your question above, I'm going to recommend B. Howard/Ward in this week for a hit isn't worth it as you will probably bench Ward. Plus Vidic will play (Ferd + Evans started CL).

I have 4 of the above but not Aguero, and the only reason i'm afraid is because the rest of my ML has him. That being said, i'm very confident with Rooney and Lukaku for the near term.

People might give Lukaku flak, but i'm perfectly happy if he consistently delivers at least 6 points per game. Whether he's a captain choice or not is another thing, but at the sub 8.0 price i got him in at...it doesn't get much better than that.

Yup everyone could argue one way or another about the arguments for and against their picks.

For me, the fact that Lukaku allows an extra big hitter in midfield just makes the deal much sweeter. Might not be an issue if you have a team value of >109 but I'm at circa 104 so every bit counts.

Completely agree mate - just if you're sitting on Rooney then there's almost always a more pressing issue to address than using two transfers to get Lukaku and upgrade the midfield and unlike say Suarez, Rooney does have great fixtures almost as good as Lukaku's.

I think if I were wildcarding today it would be Lukaku, Suarez, Aguero with a midfield of Hazard, Ramsey, Silva plus little'uns.

I wouldn't do that. Firstly because Hazard is completely unpredictable, he's not the sort of player we can blindly trust (when it comes to delivering points) -- especially now that Palace has been showing some solidness. Secondly and most importantly, the same way van Persie scored against Arsenal, I, well, think that the chances of Nasri producing something against his former club is fairly high. You know how the away fans will fire him up, right?

Can't see them doing anything about it now, don't think they have in the past

My advice for FUCL is only for a 13 player strategy, of course if you choose another strategy that´s ok because you can always go back, that´s the beauty of it, keeping options open. Remember it´s only valid till games finish tonight.

With Olympiacos through you'll be able to pick up 3.5 defender and 4.0 mid anyway

    Premier League @premierleague 3m

Liverpool's fourth goal in the 4-1 win over West Ham on 7 December has been credited as a Luis Suarez goal, not a Joey O'Brien own goal

FECK.. I want my 2 points back

just seen that O'briens OG has been taken off him & given to Suarez instead.

Will he get the points for that now?

I just got bored and put a sneaky 10 game accumulator on the following:

      MCI to win v ARS,
Cardiff to win v West Brom,
      Chelsea to beat Palace,
      Everton to beat Fulham,
      Newc to beat Southampton
WHU to beat sund at home,
      Hull to edge stoke
      Man Utd to beat Villa
      Norwich to edge Swansea
Tottenham to beat a Gerrardless Liverpool.....

      15 quid stake, 12,119 return....

      🙂

Interesting but I don't think I'd put a quid on that, let alone 15. Best of luck anyway. 🙂
