The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 17

As the ink dries on his Anfield contract, Luis Suarez hogs the headlines again with yet another salvo to see off a gutsy Cardiff display. Elsewhere, those hunting differentials will have been warmed by another twin-assist contribution from City’s playmaker, while, at the same time, showing caution ahead of the rotation minefield laid out in front of us.

The Game Changer

Quite frankly, it’s getting tedious. Luis Suarez is taking up too many digital inches on these pages and giving us little option each week but to highlight yet another brilliant performance and devastating haul.

Another 16 points today gives the Uruguayan four consecutive double-figure scores with an astonishing 9 goals accrued over that run. Quite simply, Fantasy managers have not witnessed such consistent, explosive performances since Ronaldo was twisting the blood of full-backs for Man United.

You have to have some sympathy for the Premier League’s other performers, particularly Yaya Toure, a player who is surpassing expectations and redefining his Fantasy status.

Today’s expertly taken free-kick in City’s 4-2 win at Fulham was his fourth deadball strike of the season and his ninth of the campaign. In Fantasy terms, Toure continues to defy our preconceptions – the Ivorian was never really placed in the heavy-hitter bracket but, with his consistent goalscoring from set-plays, with two spot-kicks thrown in, he’s put himself amongst the very top midfield performers.

In any other season, we’d be talking about Toure as a player of the year contender. Right now, however, that particular title appears done and dusted.

The Underused

While Toure’s scoring shows little sign of abating, his team-mate David Silva again underlined his value as an alternative for those seeking a differential. Two more assists in the win at Fulham took him to five for the season. More significantly, it meant that, of nine league starts this season, the Spaniard has returned either a goal or an assist in seven of them.

That level of consistency surely warrants further interest from Fantasy managers who will note that, currently, only just over 5% of the Fantasy Premier League player base own the playmaker. While Silva remains a single booking from a ban, with back-to-back home matches to come, it seems unlikely that many will allow that to influence their decision to swoop.

With Theo Walcott also looking to underline his credentials against Chelsea on Monday night, suddenly there are clear options for those looking to either break up or oppose the established midfield template.

The Selection Poser

With Wayne Rooney present and correct for United today, Sam Allardyce’s decision to bench Jussi Jaaskelainen and Joe Hart’s recall for City were the only real issues facing Fantasy managers. It’s the calm before the storm, however, with rotation clearly looming over the next seven days as the fixture list gets punishing.

Already there are folk questioning how Manuel Pellegrini will rotate for the Etihad clash with Palace that follows the epic Boxing Day meeting with Liverpool. Gameweek 19 is not upon us just yet but is undoubtedly a major rotation concern for all, particularly those considering City assets.

Alvaro Negredo’s owners will at least be somewhat relieved to have seen Edin Dzeko start alongside the Spaniard at the Cottage today, in the hope that both strikers will be allowed to boost their goal tallies against Liverpool and Tony Pulis’s side. The midfield is far less certain, whilst, at the back, Fantasy managers will surely have noted that Aleks Kolarov was handed a starting role at left-back as Gael Clichy switched flanks to solve Pellegrini’s injury concerns. Kolarov, with three starts in the last four, looks a daring differential for the next two City home matches.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Was swaying towards getting Wally this week - WHU look dire right now (and LIV look decent) so fancy Walcott to outscore Silva this week. You reckon Silva will play against CPL? Was eying up a move for him then.

who is the bigger issue? with 1FT and 1.4m
A: mannone..against everton away..other keeper is myhill who doesnt start
    B: coutinho...off form
    C: nasri....not sure

could take out two of them for a hit?

leaning towards taking out coutinho and nasri, if so, options are:
    D: wally + silva
    E: yaya + mirallas
F: wally + mirallas or any spurs mid depending on how they perform today

I prefer Hazard since he's Mou's fav and got him pretty early so got a lot tied up in him.

    latest arsenal article:
Mesut Ozil has collected a goal and an assist in the past three games but Arsenal's record signing is about to embark upon his first festive period without a break from football.
"At some stage I will have to [give him a rest]," said Wenger. "But not on Monday night [against Chelsea].

    Good Day Gents!

    Marshall
    Mert | AWilliams | Distin
    Ravel | Hazard | Silva | Ramsey
    Suarez | Lukaku | Rooney
    Mignolet | JWP | Ward | Chester

    - Marshall will be my goalie for next 2 games vs SOU(H) & SUN(H).
    - Planning to sell Mignolet to free some funds for Walcott or Cabaye and bring in Gazzaniga or Kelvin Davis.. will sort out the other goalie issue thru Jan WC
    - Ramsey's CP is 7.1 & SP is 7.3 .. don't lose much if I have to bring him in Jan WC

    1. Mignolet + Ramsey >> Kelvin Davis + Walcott
    2. Mignolet + Walcott >> Kelvin Davis/Gazzaniga + Cabaye

    Please choose one..

    Coleman - Terry - Ward
    Cabaye - Hazard - Ramsey - Silva
    Lukaku - Rooney - Suarez

    Davis - Ravel - Luna - Chester

    Bank = 0
    FT = 1

Thinking of doing Luna, Terry & Ramsey > Evans, M.Olsson & Walcott for an 8 pointer. Or I could just do Terry & Ramsey > Olsson & Walcott this week for a hit and leave Luna > Evans for GW19.

just do Terry/Ramsey to Olsson/Walcott, if you must. 8 points is a lot of hit. I'm not yet convinced that Walcott is the way to go. Good differential for now, but his injury is notorious for reoccurence.

      Silva

Yaya is outperforming historical norms. Regression to be expected
Walcott coming off an injury that is historically prone to reoccurence
Silva quality. Yes, injury history, but nonetheless, still a proven entity with tasty fixtures forthcoming.

Or Cabaye gets a red. In practicality, most players don't get cards in any given match and you should probably make your plans on an assumption that they won't. Statistically speaking. If they do, you may have to adjust, but you would have to adjust if they got an injury or a straight red, so don't live in fear, I guess, is what I'm saying.

I posted this 10 days ago and it's the christmas gift that keeps on giving, especially now that Mannone has performed out of his skin and my hill has been dropped for foster since then. Completely gutted I didn't get Mannone in this week for -4. Anyway unwrap this rotation prezzie but keep the receipt:

Lotta talk about Marshall / Speroni rotation at the moment.

In the spirit of Christmas giving, look what you get for the REST OF THE SEASON if you plumped for Marshall and Mannone (4.2!) any time from now:

    WBROM
    NOR
    SOU
    SUN
    VILLA
    WHAM
    SOU
    STOKE
    NOR
    HULL
    VILLA
    HULL
    WBROM
    FUL
    CPL
nor (you don't want LIVERPOOL @ Home)
    WHAM
    CPL
    EVE/sou (could be worse)
    STOKE
    CAR
new (or ManU Away - possibly better, lol)
    SWA

Don't know about you guys, but that reads like a bedtime story.

I know it's Cardiff and Sunderland but both are capable of cleanies (remember Southhampton's clean sheet joke status at the beginning of last year before they became the new Stoke?) and if Mannone keeps his spot, he's a snip at 4.2 (Westwood @ 4.5 ain't the worst option either)

Sorry if this has been highlighted already, but I laghed out loud when I stumbled on this combo the other day.

I'm currently running Myhill Marshall which is pretty sweet till the new year but Foster waiting in the wings forced me to look for a myhill replacement. Santa suggested Mannone.

    Merry Christmas
