The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 17

As the ink dries on his Anfield contract, Luis Suarez hogs the headlines again with yet another salvo to see off a gutsy Cardiff display. Elsewhere, those hunting differentials will have been warmed by another twin-assist contribution from City’s playmaker, while, at the same time, showing caution ahead of the rotation minefield laid out in front of us.

The Game Changer

Quite frankly, it’s getting tedious. Luis Suarez is taking up too many digital inches on these pages and giving us little option each week but to highlight yet another brilliant performance and devastating haul.

Another 16 points today gives the Uruguayan four consecutive double-figure scores with an astonishing 9 goals accrued over that run. Quite simply, Fantasy managers have not witnessed such consistent, explosive performances since Ronaldo was twisting the blood of full-backs for Man United.

You have to have some sympathy for the Premier League’s other performers, particularly Yaya Toure, a player who is surpassing expectations and redefining his Fantasy status.

Today’s expertly taken free-kick in City’s 4-2 win at Fulham was his fourth deadball strike of the season and his ninth of the campaign. In Fantasy terms, Toure continues to defy our preconceptions – the Ivorian was never really placed in the heavy-hitter bracket but, with his consistent goalscoring from set-plays, with two spot-kicks thrown in, he’s put himself amongst the very top midfield performers.

In any other season, we’d be talking about Toure as a player of the year contender. Right now, however, that particular title appears done and dusted.

The Underused

While Toure’s scoring shows little sign of abating, his team-mate David Silva again underlined his value as an alternative for those seeking a differential. Two more assists in the win at Fulham took him to five for the season. More significantly, it meant that, of nine league starts this season, the Spaniard has returned either a goal or an assist in seven of them.

That level of consistency surely warrants further interest from Fantasy managers who will note that, currently, only just over 5% of the Fantasy Premier League player base own the playmaker. While Silva remains a single booking from a ban, with back-to-back home matches to come, it seems unlikely that many will allow that to influence their decision to swoop.

With Theo Walcott also looking to underline his credentials against Chelsea on Monday night, suddenly there are clear options for those looking to either break up or oppose the established midfield template.

The Selection Poser

With Wayne Rooney present and correct for United today, Sam Allardyce’s decision to bench Jussi Jaaskelainen and Joe Hart’s recall for City were the only real issues facing Fantasy managers. It’s the calm before the storm, however, with rotation clearly looming over the next seven days as the fixture list gets punishing.

Already there are folk questioning how Manuel Pellegrini will rotate for the Etihad clash with Palace that follows the epic Boxing Day meeting with Liverpool. Gameweek 19 is not upon us just yet but is undoubtedly a major rotation concern for all, particularly those considering City assets.

Alvaro Negredo’s owners will at least be somewhat relieved to have seen Edin Dzeko start alongside the Spaniard at the Cottage today, in the hope that both strikers will be allowed to boost their goal tallies against Liverpool and Tony Pulis’s side. The midfield is far less certain, whilst, at the back, Fantasy managers will surely have noted that Aleks Kolarov was handed a starting role at left-back as Gael Clichy switched flanks to solve Pellegrini’s injury concerns. Kolarov, with three starts in the last four, looks a daring differential for the next two City home matches.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cheeky captain punt on Cabaye on Boxing Day? Options are:

    A) Cabaye vs Stoke (H)

    B) Hazard vs Swansea (H)

    C) Ramsey vs West Ham (A)

    D) Silva vs Liverpool (H)

    E) Rooney vs Hull (A)

    F) Suarez vs City (A)

    G) Lukaku vs Sunderland (H)

      For me its between

      A) Rooney
      B) Suarez
      C) Hazard
      D) Lukaku (if I get him in)

Suarez would be a safe option as I reckon City will concede, especially with Zabaleta injured.

I've had Suarez since his first available game. Not captaining him twice has cost me over 40 points! If he breaks both legs, retires to S America, becomes a drug baron, I'll still have the armband on him lol

I have exactly the same options.

I was on Suarez but have just changed to Lukaku (c). Wes Brown got sent off yesterday for Sunderland and will miss the next 3. John O'Shea also picked up a knock and was seen later in a hospital wearing a sling on his arm, likely to miss the Everton game too.

With O'Shea and Brown out, Sunderland will fall apart. It's just more a question of who will get the goals for Everton and how many?

      Dang, Baps,
Your front seven is same as mine was, but I dumped Hazard for Silva for this week.
Back line different, but I'd be tempted to bring in Ward because I believe in the Pulis factor and I have combo of Burner and Ward who rotate well going forward.
Wanted to think about bringing in Sunderland defender to swap in for upcoming fixtures but bummed about red card for Brown, cuz was cheapest route. Would dump Williams.

Keeping Ozil over Theo, cuz I'm skeptical about Walcott health. (But that may be just me.. full caveat... am M.D. and have some familiarity with these issues.)

        Thanks DB! Nice reply.

I really like my front 8 tbh and am happy with Hazard. I do feel like I am missing out on City now without Kun.
I am really hesitant to sell Ozil as he has been really good recently. Trying not fall to price rise pressure but I do see the appeal as Ozil is expensive.
So I should just do the boring defensive tranny this GW and leave MCI?

yeah januzai valencia and young are likely to rotate on the 2 wingers spot (especially with welbeck's injury yesterday)
rooney kagawa and hernandez will rotate for the striker/in the hole position
collins is very likely to start both, allardice simply does not believe in rotation

Won't be much rotation for Norwich. Hughton is the anti-force to rotation. Certainly, fantasy-wise, the players that people may have, i.e. Fer, Redmond, and M Olsson, won't be rotated.

Is the reign of the big defenders done for a little while?

I'm thinking Terry and Ramsey to Turner (or another 4.2m def) and Yaya. Then Hazard to Silva the following week if not suspended for Palace.

    Thoughts?

        Hazard, Walcott, Whittingham, Morrison.

I could get Yaya in for Whittingham but that would involve Terry and Howard out in an 8 point hit with 8.1m to spend on keeper and defender. Mannone + 3.9m def? Seems dodgy!

GJ + Ravel > Chester + Wally (exact cash). (-8)

It's either that or play Bannan or Ravel (and can't afford Wally next week without a (-8) anyway.

    Public Service Announcement:
When you drink a bunch of gin, and try to scroll upwards and downwards quickly to see if anybody has replied to your comments, it will make your head spin and you may feel nausea.
    Solution:
    1) drink less (already happened, so can't cure)
    2) look away when scrolling. (imprecise and difficult)
    3) go to bed

Agree, Dutch gins generally worthwhile. Haven't tried as many of them as they aren't widely available in US, but probably more readily available to you on that side of ocean.

Start with Tanqueray. Widely available and not overly expensive, but worth the upgrade over generic gin.

The mix formula that I use, that works with any size glass: Fill glass with ice, almost to brim (large cubes). Add gin to just under half the volume of the glass (will disturb you a bit as you seem to be adding more gin than you would think would be needed, but as the ice melts, and as you sip your drink, the mix will be perfect). Top with tonic. Add lime or lemon, as you prefer.

Once you have become addicted, try Tanqueray 10, straight. It is significantly pricier, but worth it.

We digress a bit from the topic of gin, but I agree. In Arizona, we are plenty in the middle of agave territory. Many, if not most, of them, make their way across the border into Arizona. Those that don't are available when we venture down south.

Follow the advice of the man above, you don't need to look that far ahead.

You WILL have played your winter wildcard by the end of January at the very latest - just plan for the short term and you can reassess your two keepers (and whole squad) in a few weeks.

Anyone else considering ditching Hazard after Boxing day?

Cabaye Ramsey Walcott Silva is the midfield I think I want

In order to keep Ozil I can do Williams, Ravel, Cabaye > Ward, Mutch and Silva.
Worth it over 2 game weeks?

      ??? yes, I think....
I've loved Cabaye, but am ready to ship soon, given coming fixtures.
Silva is clearly a better player than Cabaye and on a better squad.
Ward benefits from Pulis factor and is still cheap.
Palace not as good as Swansea, but if you are using Ward in a rotation you can be OK.

Thanks again DB - MD. 😉

Not sure about the RavMo > Mutch but that's all I can afford.

With Cardiff home to Saints and then home to Sunderland, it's not a bad plan.

Whoever it is he is only a 5th mid after all. 🙂
