Scout Notes – Gameweek 17 – Monday

Gameweek 17 comes to an end with a goalless draw at the Emirates. Jose Mourinho shifts to a 4-3-3 to stifle Arsenal, as the hosts fail to score for only the second time this season:

Gunners Backline in the Points Again
While Arsene Wenger’s side failed to find the net last night, their defence continued a series of impressive performances at the Emirates. In a Gameweek that had harvested a single home clean sheet in the previous nine matches, Arsenal’s resilience came to the fore yet again as they collected a third shut-out in four in front of their own fans in a run that has seen them concede just once. Indeed, the Gunners have now racked up six clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks and, with West Ham, Newcastle, Cardiff and Villa in the next four, they could be poised for further returns at a time when most of their title rivals have failed to show the same level of defensive consistency.

Wenger’s Lack of Changes Increases Ozil Rest Fears
On Sunday afternoon, the Gunners boss had admitted he was considering the prospect of handing his record signing a slight rest over the festive period:

“In Germany, they have a break and we had this same situation with Jens Lehmann in his first season here. We have to give Mesut a break – but not tomorrow night. He has played a lot. But we have had a little break since we played last Saturday at Manchester City and, hopefully, he has recovered.”

It was intriguing, then, that Wenger failed to make a single substitution over the 90 minutes last night. Since arriving from Real Madrid, Ozil has started every league match and has missed just 10 minutes of the last 11 Gameweeks – with Santi Cazorla and fit-again Lukas Podolski both warming the bench last night, the Gunners boss has obvious options if he chooses to freshen up his side for back-to-back trips to West Ham and Newcastle over the next five days.

Mourinho Reverts to 4-3-3
It was perhaps telling that the Blues boss switched systems in order to frustrate the Gunners last night. Chelsea had managed a single clean sheet in their previous 11 league fixtures – back in Gameweek 12 at West Ham, where they also played with a 4-3-3 – and, despite having more efforts than their hosts, Mourinho’s decision to sub off Fernando Torres for David Luiz late on pretty much sums up his contentment with the point. Clearly, though, Chelsea are still very much in transition under the Special One – whilst a three-man central midfield affords his side extra stability, they remain far from resilient in a 4-2-3-1 system. Indeed, the previous three away games using this formation saw them concede a total of eight goals at Newcastle, Sunderland and Stoke.

Worryingly for Mourinho – and owners of Chelsea’s main Fantasy assets – his side have now travelled to five of the current top eight (Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle, Spurs and Man United) and scored just a single goal over those matches, back in Gameweek 6 away to Tottenham.

Hazard Looks Jose’s Only Attacking “Untouchable”
Regardless of formation, the Belgian seems to be the one attacking midfielder Mourinho simply cannot afford to do without. Last night’s change of tactics ended a run of four straight starts for Juan Mata – Chelsea scored 11 goals over that period and, while Hazard produced two goals and a pair of assists, the Spaniard was unconvincing and managed a single assist by comparison. Despite returning from injury, Oscar has now been handed two brief sub appearances in the last four and played just two sets of 90 minutes in the previous 10 Gameweeks. After just a couple of starts in the first 13 Gameweeks, Willian has now featured in the first XI in three of the last four – aside from Hazard, then, Mourinho’s multitude of midfield options continue to cancel each other out as the season unfolds, with the Blues boss still struggling to find the ideal combination.

Is henderson's points only as a result of gerrard being injured?

Will he tail off again when gerrard returns?

No one else think arsenal were so poor that they might find it difficult to beat west ham? I know it's a typical arsenal rout kind of game after early difficulty, but they really are not looking good at the moment. I don't know why. The early season Ozil Ramsey fuelled excitement has gone.

I said above who to drop of ozil, ramsey and sterling...people said sterling. I'm picking ramsey. City games are full of goals, sterling is lethal on the break. I don't think clichy is particularly good.

Nope. Not many teams get past Chelsea when they park the bus. Their fixtures ease up now and they have Podolski back and Cazorla too.And they're still joint top with Liverpool likely to lose their next two.

And Giroud went very close, and should have scored another great chance but sliced wide.

Chelsea are a very good side. They're 2 points off the top after playing relatively poorly. When the goals start to go in they'll be deadly. And they probably have the strongest bench in the league.

It would be different if they had a striker who could score, if Mata was allowed to express himself as the no10 and they had central midfielders more dynamic than Lampard and Mikel.

Doesn't matter, they still have probably the best squad in the league overall. That Mata doesn't play and Oscar was on the bench last night and yet they still took a point off the league leaders, away, tells you all you need to know.

It tells me nothing I didn't already know about Mourinho's tactics.

And Liverpool were and are the league leaders, not Arsenal.

I don't think Liverpool will lose the next two...i think they can draw and win.

Arsenal just showed so little intent, misplacing passes all over, Ramsey was pretty bad. Ozil anonymous again. I don't think 'chelsea parked the bus' tells the whole story. Arsenal of the last few years have been flat track bullies so maybe I'm wrong and they'll smash west ham.

LOL @ this. We havent been that bad. 6-3 was a flattering scoreline to city, and Chelsea literally parked the bus last night.

We will get back to winning ways, starting with West ham

Any idea why Oscar needed a rest again yesterday?

    A) out of favour, sell for other big hitters
    B) tactical to fit formation playing Arsenal
    C) he's had his part of the rests now to be able to play rest of the matches before the wild card

First choice players are not rested for big games. Its an odd one, could have been tactical (not sure what Willian offers over Oscar though) or maybe he's still having issues from his injury.

Can anybody explain how selling and current prices work to me please lol

Example - Colemans Current Price is 6.3 but his selling price is 5.6, does it wait till a certain time of the day to update or is it all dependant on how much i bought him for.

    Thanks guys.

It depends on what you bought him for.

If current price is 6.3, but selling price is 5.6, that means you probably bought him for 4.9/5.0.

      Another example:

If you buy someone for 5.0, but their current price is 7.0, their selling price (for you) is most likely going to be 6.0.

That's how it worked last year, anyway.

Ozil was nonexistent last night... but to be fair, most of the heavy hitters were. Hazard could of had 1 or 2 assists if Lampard's shot off the bar had crossed the line and if Willian hadn't fluffed his lines. As a Chelsea fan, I think our clean sheet last night was impacted by the weather. Games played during poor conditions are rarely goal-fests.

Im not sure if its fair to say he was non-existent. Chelsea's defence was spot on.

    this GW

    Captain:

A- Rooney. Currently Involved in 80% of MU goals
B- Suarez. Currently involded in 100% of Liverpool goals but will probably won't be fed by its midfield as he has been until then since City's midfield possession home is huge.
C- Lukaku. Seems too quiet. Sunderland will be without Brown and maybe without O'shea so, though they have tightened up latel, I believe they can sink at Goodison

Everton's fixtures aren't too shabby either though mate. I'd much rather ditch Ridgewell than Howard IMO. As I was saying to Hanamichi, Chelsea and Arsenal were both fortunate to get CS's last night. Games played in poor weather are notoriously low scoring and I'm a Szczesny and Terry owner. Can you afford Ridgewell > Gibbs?

Azpi looks one of those players who is always up for it, even when the team isn't playing well and a couple others heads start to drop.

I think that's why Mourinho likes him as well.

Quite a few decent options to bring in for Panty this week - best one and why?

    A) Howard - very good fixtures up to end of WC window and solid defence. Just one yellow away from a ban though (other keeper is Davis 🙁 )
    B) Szczesny - very good fixtures up to end of WC window and solid defence. 2 tricky away games up first though.
    C) Lloris - very good short term fixtures (3 good home ties in the next 4), but Spurs looking less solid under Sherwood and without Vert.
    D) Marshall - very good short term fixtures and cheap, but plays for a poorer team than A-C
    E) Ruddy - very good fixtures up to end of WC window and cheap, but plays for a poorer team than A-C

I don't think West Ham is a tricky away fixture for defenders (famous last words)

A or B. Everton have a knack for conceding vs lower teams but you dont have Coleman etc. so it's a close call. How much is Szcz now?

        5.7m (0.2m cheaper than Howard)

Szczesny means I can afford Nasri -> Walcott either this week (4 points) or in a later week. Probably the clincher right?

        Which transfer would you prioritise:

        a) Pantilimon (otherwise forced to play MacGregor against ManU this weekend)
        b) Ozil (rest likely and frees cash)

Ozil could be rested v West Ham, but has decent fixtures after that. I'd keep. Lampard could sit out if Chelsea revert to 4-2-3-1.

            Straw Poll - Yaya Toure

A - I have him. He's one of the best FPL options and you're crazy to go without.

B - I'll never buy him, especially at that price. As 8 of his 9 goals were from set pieces I'm a little reluctant to spend nearly 10m on a player who will not help boost my rank, and is only likely to decline.

C - I'm currently unsure. Convince me oh wise FFS sages.

Is it wise to go without Yaya toure ?

Or every team should have him now.... i have owned all the players this season which are 40% and above ownership.. but havent got Yaya till now.... thinking about doing Hazard ➡ Yaya Toure

But He is Yaya toure 🙁 can't believe that guy is scoring and assisting without a single game week rest..

Will he get rested this 2-3 gameweeks ?
