Drop the Flop

Drop the Flop – Gameweek 22

We’ve all been there. That light-bulb moment when you see a player hint at form and suddenly present themselves as the perfect transfer to help propel yourself up your mini-league.

Sure, they’ve only scored one goal and picked up a scrappy assist over the last few Gameweeks, but Fantasy Football success is built on such risks. Flash forward a few weeks, however, and you’re left with a player wasting a precious spot in your starting XI who has suddenly developed a penchant for two-point returns.

This new feature shines a spotlight on a selection of such flops and looks for ways to remedy the situation and help Fantasy managers to ditch the accumulated deadwood:

Glen Johnson – Last four Gameweeks: 2 points

So often a reliable source of both defensive and attacking points in years gone by (a goal, five assists and 16 clean sheets in 2012/13), the Liverpool full back has disappointed many this time around. His defensive prospects looked sky high after producing clean sheets in each of the opening three Gameweeks, but with only a trio of shut-outs since then, the value of Liverpool’s rearguard assets has tumbled significantly.

At the other end of the pitch, the 5.8-priced Johnson has far from succeeded in making up for his lack of defensive returns. He’s contributed just one assist all season, back in Gameweek 15, and has failed to reward the 28,000 Fantasy Premier League managers who snapped up his services for the following Gameweek. He has returned a measly four points since then and, with a Merseyside derby and the visit of Arsenal on the horizon, its time this Flop made a swift exit.

Having registered five clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks, Sunderland’s defensive assets are offering superior value at the moment. Amidst a superb set of fixtures, Gus Poyet’s first-choice back-four are at least 1.0 cheaper than the Reds defender and offer differential appeal, with Phil Bardsley’s two goals thus far furthering his case.

On the other hand, the premium backlines are also hitting form right now. Patrice Evra, Seamus Coleman and John Terry may well be costly alternatives to Johnson but are all plundering the points at the moment and carry significant potential for attacking returns. Further up the price bracket is Leighton Baines who, recently back from the sidelines, has quickly demonstrated his worth by picking up double figures (including maximum bonus points) in his last two games. Worth the extra outlay? He just might be.

Peter Whittingham – Last four Gameweeks – 8 points

Cast your mind back a few Gameweeks and, in the heat of the festive schedule, the allure of Peter Whittingham was sitting at a season-high. Embarking on a superb run of fixtures from Boxing Day onwards, the set-piece specialist highlighted his potential as a top transfer target with a goal, assist and bonus points over Gameweek 16 and 17 and was resultantly drafted in by 75,000 managers over the subsequent three Gameweeks.

Since Boxing Day, however, Whittingham has done everything but spread post-Christmas joy. Two point hauls in each of the last four fixtures left those who acquired him ruing the decision to opt for the winger over in-form team-mate Jordan Mutch. True, he is still the top-scoring midfielder under 7.0, but with the fixture list now taking a severe turn for the worse with ties against both Manchester sides looming, and new Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing Magnus Wolff Eikrem challenging Whittingham’s starting spot, it might just be the time to cut your losses and go in search of a replacement.

With January Wildcards to wield, managers might well have the luxury of spare budget to utilise in going about replacing this Flop. Adam Lallana is available for less than 2.0 more than Whittingham and offers almost the whole package – the fourth highest-scoring midfielder in the game boasts form, security of starts and a decent schedule ahead (SUN, ars, ful, STK, HUL). On the other hand, for those looking to free up budget elsewhere, Adnan Januzaj, Steve Sidwell, Raheem Sterling and Ki Sung-Yueng all have appeal. At 0.6 cheaper than Whittingham, the latter has picked up two sets of double figures in his last four games and has a mere 0.7% ownership, making him a strong differential and a significant climber on our Watchlist.

    Suarez vs Negredo captaincy:

Negredo - big differential (C) if he can outscore Suarez.
    Suarez - he's Suarez.

    Man City home goals: 38!
    Liverpool home goals: 27

    Cardiff away goals conceded: 17
Aston Villa away goals conceded: 11 (joint second best in the league)

    Negredo home goals: 7
    Suarez home goals: 15

City will score more, but will Negredo be involved in enough of them to outscore Suarez? Worth a gamble? It could backfire/succeed spectacularly.

The only player worthy of taking the armband from Suarez is Aguero

No way on Aguero - can't even guarantee a start. Just putting it out there for Negredo.

Trouble is, Suarez can easily go and get 20+ points and destroy you.

Am I the only one that thinks there's a strong chance we see Negredo Dzeko up top tomorrow and another 20-30 minute appearance from Aguero?

With City's upcoming schedule I could definitely see Pelligrini not starting Kun this weekend....

As of now I'm still holding Negredo even though I've got the funds to get to Aguero, just having a hard time deciding if a -4 is worth it to get from Negredo to Aguero this week....

One thing if we're talking about an injured Negredo or something. But he's been red hot. Nothing wrong with saving a FT and waiting until next week. Aguero might go up a few like .2 or .3, but if you can afford that, then wait.

might also consider that Negredo has played many minutes recently and *might* be in need of a rest.
otherwise the safe choice is Negredo and Dzeko

Doing exactly the same. Aguero -4 is very silly - Negredo could easily punish you if Aguero is benched.

Two cup games after this week mean easy fixtures to get Aguero up to speed.

Ok, I've never been much of a Team Value guy. Have tried to play price risers during breaks and WC, usually to middling results. My TV is 106.6 right now. How's that so far?

I've tried to hold on to guys and not get too knee-jerky, particularly at the back. Cabaye, Mert, Haz, Suarez and Ramsey are the main value guys here.

I don't think holding onto injured players (more than 1 gw) for team value is a good idea in general.

Ramsey price might let you get away with it but with WCs he must be going down fast.

Aguero to rise overnight - so it's Negredo to Aguero for me to get in before the rise. Any thoughts? I think Aguero will rise sharply and quickly. I would like to have both this GW but can only have one (with Suarez and Luka).

Would have thought so although with him and Nastasic in my team I am very concerned that I could go into a home game against Cardiff with no Man City coverage!

I'll only have Hull/CP as cover when he's not starting though.

But i guess since Azpil isn't nailed either, it's got to be B or C.

        After this deadline.

It's 10 days long, and it encapsulates the FA Cup. The last one is only 3 days after the next deadline!!

            Eh?! 😕

            Injuries
FA Cup replay news (DGW maybe)
            Price rises

All benefit from going the week earlier.

              Injuries - we'll know them for GW24
FA Cup replay news - we'll know that in GW24

Price rises - very dubious about this. A long GW doesn't always affect price rises (see last FA Cup week) because people look at FPL after a GW and before a GW - very little activity in between.

Also, a player would have to rise by £0.2m and you'd only then get £0.1m - the players likely to rise are the big money ones. But you won't be able to afford them because you'll likely be keeping any you currently have. If there are any you need to get in to avoid rises (eg Aguero), that can be done without a WC.

GW24 is better if your team isn't in trouble - can see the late transfers (which most normally are) and get extra time to assess the options, including the movements in your mini league.

Also, I know we can see teamsheets for GW23 - but this is only half the teams and the fixtures aren't great. Also unlikely to make a WC decision in the final few minutes of the GW.

Comprende? 😀 All opinions, but can't see the big reason behind GW23 being better.

How's this team for the coming GW? (WC next week)

      Speroni
      Koscielny Terry Clyne
      Hazard Cazorla Yaya Sterling
      Sturridge Lukaku Suarez

      Lewis; Januzaj, Distin, Burner

I like it very much considering its pre-WC. However i've never seen the point in doubling up in the same area (Sturridge and Suarez). Both are excellent and both will get you points, but I would rather take the opportunity to get involved in another game, Giroud is a good choice for the short-term

True that, this is a complete punt for one week only knowing that I was WCing next week. I only got in sturridge this week, as I expected him to rise plus possibly quite a few goals on the weekend.

I've finally managed to find a way to fit Rooney. Suarez and Aguero into my team.. with Terry the one I had to axe. (In case anyone cares, this is the final result - http://i.imgur.com/lbXz4ct.png)

Now, my final issue.. with Rooney is not playing this weekend, I can currently sell him at 11.1 (and he's priced at 11.4)

Do you think that he will drop a whole 0.3 from today till GW 23 ? That would justify my temporarily removing him from my team just for this weekend, before getting him back again the following GW.

      Thoughts ?

The only concern is we are not really sure how long Rooney is out for

        http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jan/15/wayne-rooney-injury-manchester-united-chelsea

Manchester United's hopes of finishing in a Champions League position could suffer a severe blow as fears grow that Wayne Rooney may be out for three weeks with a groin injury.
