Sky Sports Focus – Gameweek 23

With Gameweek 22 behind us, it’s time to reassess our Sky teams using the usual info, including the Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, the bonus point beneficiaries and the current market trends. As always, we also look ahead to the forthcoming fixtures, offering our preferred captain setup for Gameweek 23 and keeping one eye on Gameweek 24.

Gameweek 22 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players who won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man-of-the-Match award.

FixtureMoTM
Hull vs ChelseaEden Hazard
Cardiff vs West HamMark Noble
Everton vs NorwichGareth Barry
Fulham vs SunderlandAdam Johnson
Southampton vs West BromLuke Shaw
Tottenham vs Crystal PalaceNabil Bentaleb
Man United vs SwanseaAdnan Januzaj
Newcastle vs Man CityCheick Tiote
Stoke vs LiverpoolLuis Suarez
Aston Villa vs ArsenalJack Wilshere

Midfielders dominate once again, with eight of the recipients plying their trade in the centre of the park – Southampton defender Luke Shaw and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez were the two exceptions. The impressive Adnan Jauzaj (4.2m) and Nabil Bentaleb (4.1m) offer us some intriguing budget midfield options if they can maintain their current first-team places. The player who has caught the eye most often for the reporters is Eden Hazard who has eight MoTM so far in just 20 starts – an impressive 40% of his games.

Gameweek 22 Bonus Points

Three goalkeepers managed five saves or more – Joe Hart, Jack Butland and Adrian were the top shot-stoppers. Adrian managed seven saves which was the highest amount for the week to add to his clean sheet – at just 3.9m, if he can claim the number one jersey and West Ham’s performances improve, the Spaniard could offer exceptional value.

In defence, a total of eight players gathered bonus, six for tackles and four for passes completed. The two players to gather bonus for both were Swansea duo Angel Rangel and Jordi Amat – the bonus system often favors the Swans’ backline and, with an upturn in fixtures just around the corner, they could be worthy of consideration. Crystal Palace full-back Joel Ward is still the top defender for bonus points overall with an additional 18 points.

In midfield, 22 players earned bonus points – 11 for tackling and 13 for passes. Tottenham’s central-midfield partnership of Moussa Dembele and Nabil Bentaleb were the two to gather bonus for both – Bentaleb managed to complete a stunning 100 passes on his first Premier League start. Cheik Tiote has now joined Lucas on 30 bonus points at the top of the standings.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout Members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

NameTeamValue% of Managers
NasriMan CIty6.312.76%
BarkleyEverton4.39.71%
RooneyMan United9.66.89%
ToureMan City8.65.89%
RamseyArsenal5.85.87%

Injuries have a major influence here, with all five of the above affected in recent weeks – Yaya Toure has been passed fit to start for City tomorrow, though the other four remain on the sidelines.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
NegredoMan City8.65.64%
LallanaSouthampton5.95.11%
JanuzajMan United4.24.82%
WilshereArsenal6.24.43%
GiroudArsenal8.54.35%

Alvaro Negredo’s good form sees him top the most transfers in but, with Sergio Aguero available this weekend, it remains to be seen if Fantasy managers continue to back the Spaniard. The other four players have all started to hit some consistent form in recent weeks and look set to offer good value considering their relatively low price-tags.

Gameweek 23 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the captaincy choices for Gameweek 23 there is an opportunity for three captains if you choose to use a transfer for Monday night’s game.

Our Strategy:
Luis Suarez (Aston Villa at Home) → Eden Hazard (Man United at Home) → Romelu Lukaku(West Brom Away)

For Saturday 18 January, you could be brave and opt for an Arsenal asset such as Olivier Giroud or even take a chance on Sergio Aguero’s starting role for Man City’s clash at the Etihad but with Luis Suarez’ relentless form perhaps you would be a tad naive to ignore him (and braver than us), so we opt for the safety of the Uruguayan.

For the following day, we opt for a captain change to Chelsea’s Eden Hazard who plays at home to Man United – as mentioned above, Hazard is currently leading the MoTM awards and sits second in the overall points standings just behind Suarez.

Monday evening sees Everton roll up to The Hawthorns and, if you have a surplus of transfers at your disposal, it might be worth bringing in the big Belgian front man Romelu Lukaku as he returns to play against his old club West Brom.

As an afterthought, bringing in a Man United player for Lukaku might be worth considering after the Gameweek finishes in order to catch the champions’ fixture at home to Cardiff in Gameweek 24.

Baker is injured for the short term and in any case i prefer Ward's game time security.
I wouldn't tend to want to double up on arsenal for the rest of the season personally... but they are the best defense i guess - i'd be tempted by terry over mertesacker.
Personally i prefer Lallana to cabaye given the former's fixtures.
as its a wildcard i would consider having enough money to do negredo to aguero in due course. although i prefer negredo for this week

    Afternoon gents,
Thoughts on what I should do this GW? I'm currently thinking Lukaku > Giroud. Then WC next week to get rid of the deadwood/bring in Aguero.

    Ruddy
    Evra -- Coleman -- Clyne -- Kompany
    Ozil -- Hazard -- Januzaj
    Negredo -- Lukaku -- Suarez

Afternoon all, would appreciate some opinions on whether I should WC this week or not? Sorry for the long post! Original plan was to WC at the last possible stage, but now I've got Aguero in with my FT, the changes I'd make now are pretty similar to those I intend to make before GW24.

    Current team

    DDG* (Harper*)
    Coleman Brown Whittaker* (Debuchy* Amorebieta*)
    Hazard Lallana Cabaye Sterling* (Jedinak*)
    Aguero Suarez Negredo

    Potential WC team

    Boruc* (Davis*)
    Coleman Brown Zabaleta/Kolarov* (Hudson* Chester*)
    Hazard Lallana Cabaye Januzaj* (Parker*)
    Aguero Suarez Negredo

Barring injury, I can't see him wanting to get rid of any of my 6 main attackers even if I waited till GW24 so is there any point in waiting at all? Cheers

NB. My team value is lower than most on here so I can't afford some of the teams being posted by others.

Well, your starting XI would be slightly improved this week in my opinion, I suppose it's simply a case of gambling on an injury/suspension/transfer shaking things up in the next week or two - if that happens you'll be glad to have a wildcard, if it doesn't you'll wish you played it.

Almost feels like you don't need it given you're only changing 3 of your best choice team!

Yep as weird as it sounds, my teams just getting to where I wanted it as I have to play the WC, still got my other one too! I'd probs do Sterling to Janu next week anyways so I'd be even closer and would be making even less changes.

Edging towards playing it and getting it out the way. Ta

I am in a similar predicament. Low team value and all. A poor defense this week coupled with Coutinho is making me think about playing WC now. I am beginning to think that it is valuable to save WC until last possible moment is optimum. Might just take a hit this week and save.

To be clear, I almost certainly don't have the balls myself, I just really like the idea!

It's times like this that I wish I was one of those sneaky buggers with multiple teams so I could take some mad risks with one of them!

But it's really a bit of a crazy idea with Hazard & Ramsey would be the 2 mids I guess and there's little to no value on 6.0 below.

My mock up had Hazard and Silva in midfield with three sub-5.0 midfielders to make up the numbers. Allows Cech, Terry, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Coleman, Kompany at the back plus Negredo, Suarez, Sturridge up front.

My TV is awful though so a lot of people round here could do similar but upgrade Negredo to Aguero, etc. with no sacrifices elsewhere.

I'll be mulling this one over...

I haven't given it massive thought to be fair, I think I prefer Cech overall though - Man Utd are not to be trusted and Spurs are a bit more gung-ho under Sherwood. Mourinho bloody loves a 1-0.

I try to ignore whether or not it means doubling/tripling up and just choose players in isolation - probably a bad idea though!

I believe in this and I'm playing 4-3-3 this week and benching Lallana

And if Azpil stops getting games, I'll upgrade rather than downgrade.

5-2-3 might be going a bit far though. I know Applebonkers was talking about unveiling his "5-2-3 Bap Slap" soon but I don't know if that's going to be his actual team or an academic proposition.

Just quickly mocked up something with a potential wildcard - the great thing is that the big defenders are so much more affordable than the other positions. You can have 11 big hitters 😯

Three 'big' defenders is good, I'll definitely go for that - it's just a question of how many more of them I can squeeze in my wildcard team. If I could crowbar some representation from Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea plus Coleman I'd be pretty happy.

      5 - 2 - 3 would be fairly risky,

i agree that big teams tighten up from January on but i think it has more to do with failings of other teams as fatigue and lack of squad depth kicks in. I'd happily go 4 big at the back if Cabaye and Lallana didn't offer so much potential for their price.

Think I'm going 4-3-3 in my GW24 WC.

      Looking at

      Mannone, Boruc
      Baines, Coleman, Kosc, Azpi/Kolarov, Chester
      Hazard, Silva, Ramsey, Ki, Noone
      Suarez, Aguero, Sturridge

Looks lovely and I feel Baines will get more points than a 7m mid (Eriksen/Lallana)

And it was 5 defenders from strong defensive form teams with cleansheet fixtures, basically everybody agreed it should bring me 4-6 (GK included) clean sheets. I got 1. I even chose the wrong GK.

Oh dear, that sounds bad. Although it's not really fair to judge any formation/line up on the basis of a single gameweek - it has to be a long term plan which you stick to.

It's like doubling/tripling up on a team's defence/attack, the good weeks become great the bad weeks become dreadful.

The problem is that for the defenders the good GW is 6-8 points, for attackers and midfielders it more often means two digits. And that clean sheet is too easy to lose.

I'm still going to put money to defence, I always do, but go with 3-4 defenders each week, no more these 5-man defences. If they concede, I have too little upfront to make up for it.

You're probably right and it's definitely the sensible approach, I'm just trying to weigh up how precious I am about my rank and how much I should be throwing caution to the wind and just playing for fun! 🙂

Part of the attraction for me is that this is a tactic which works where your team value is low (mine is awful)

I have been on Boruc/Mannone all week, but looking at it with loads of stats and analysis, Southampton don't actually have many easy home games until the end, a lot of their so called "easy" fixtures are away where they have only kept 3 cs out of 10 games. Mannone/Marshall gives you arguably 14 easy home fixtures out of 17 weeks. Even if I get 7 clean sheets from that I'll be happy.
