This Much We Know – Gameweek 28

As always, our Monday afternoon regular casts an eye over the weekend’s matches as Fantasy managers begin to plan in preparation for the decimated Gameweek 29 schedule:

Adebayor is a frustrating figure…
This is nothing new. We know this. We’ve known it since he appeared back on our player lists. In a Gameweek in which many granted him the armband after his midweek Europa League double, the Tottenham forward treated us and Tim Sherwood to a laboured display which garnered just an assist as the north London outfit huffed a puffed against Cardiff. Let’s be honest, as soon as Adebayor emerged as a Fantasy prospect, we were waiting for him to let us down – is it too early to get the jitters or is Sunday’s complacent display a sign of things to come?

Dawson isn’t bowing out easily…
The Spurs club skipper was a dominant figure in the home win over Cardiff and was singled out for post-match praise by his manager. While Younes Kaboul is injured and could well oust him to the bench when fit – as we saw as recently as Gameweek 26 – Dawson’s display will not have made it easy for Tim Sherwood. Much as we’d like Kaboul as a prospect for 4.6, it may not be an option just yet.

Martinez feels he can rest Mirallas…
The Belgian was omitted from the Palace teamsheet for the postponed Gameweek 26 clash as Roberto Martinez looked to give him a breather. Having scored in each of his last two home stats, Mirallas was heavily-backed this weekend but found himself warming the bench as Everton squeezed past West Ham. With Gerard Deulofeu and Aidan McGeady both pushing for game time, the recent turn of events is a real concern – all the more frustrating given Everton’s excellent forthcoming ruin of fixtures. Romelu Lukaku’s winner against Big Sam’s men suggests he may be the Merseysiders’ key attacking option for the run-in now.

The midfield malfunctions just go on…
Mirallas rested, Robert Snodgrass ineffective and replaced at half-time with an injury, Adam Lallana impressive without quite producing the points in Southampton’s home loss to Liverpool. How fitting, then, that both Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure reminded us of their brilliance and ability to deliver yet again this weekend. Fantasy managers are screaming out for some differentials to show some consistency and rival that duo’s appeal but given their form, it’ll be a bold move to go without either for the run-in. Even those who have pointedly rejected Toure up until now will likely succumb to his potential, bearing in mind that City will have three doubles in the last nine Gameweeks.

Suarez and Sturridge – it gets tricky from here on in…
In recent weeks, owning both has paid off in style – particularly if you made the switch back to Suarez this weekend. Sturridge arrived at Southampton on Saturday evening as the forward in form, though, and was understandably backed by many but only returned a two-point haul. Only once in the last five starts have Suarez (4,5,2,5,15) and Sturridge (9,6,15,16,2) registered similar scores, highlighting how difficult they are making the armband decision. Both may be in outstanding form but the margins of error are substantial – calling the captaincy wrong in each of the last five would have earned you 36 points, whereas the right decision would have brought home 122 points. From here on in, the armband call looks a difficult one, fraught with potential frustration.

Sterling could be sacrificed as we reach the business end…
A run of 15 successive league starts came to an end last weekend as the youngster dropped to the bench. Brendan Rodgers drafted Joe Allen into the centre and rolled out a midfield diamond in his successful attempt to contain Southampton at St Mary’s – Sterling’s impact as a second half sub still saw him find the net but given the emphatic display against the Saints, the winger’s owners may well be worried.

Benteke might just be the answer…
The Belgian is threatening to embark on a run similar to last season, where he notched 14 times in the last 18 Gameweeks. Benteke put on a muscular display to skittle the Norwich back four on Sunday, taking his tally to five goals and a pair of assists in his last eight appearances and demonstrating he’s got the weaponry to banish any talk of relegation at Villa. Fantasy managers who dare to take a punt with one of their precious squad slots up front could well be rewarded by the in-form Belgian.

Arsenal are giving us the jitters…
There are real concerns about the Gunners’ prospects at both ends of the pitch and we’re already seeing significant sales of their main Fantasy assets since the weekend loss at Stoke. One win and a single clean sheet in the last four highlights Arsenal’s current form as his side start to stumble – with a blank Gameweek 29, followed by Spurs, Chelsea, City and Everton, the exodus is understandable.

Baines is back in the reckoning…
The Toffees left-back delivered an assist, maximum bonus and clean sheet return against West Ham on Saturday and was joint-top for creativity over the Gameweek, supplying as many chances as Eden Hazard. Since returning from a toe injury in Gameweek 19, Baines has racked up three sets of double figures, with a goal, two assists and nine bonus points over that period – Seamus Coleman has a goal and two bonus points by comparison. With the Merseysiders set for some superb fixtures after this weekend’s blank, those currently without an Everton defender may well be swayed by Baines’ form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'd be tempted to go without a keeper and save the transfer to set up for GW31. Then go McGregor in GW31 and Mannone in 34 and 37 or whenever other Sunderland DGW happen.

But if you're getting rid of 1, it has to be McG, look at Boruc or Speroni maybe.

If attempting to navigate your way through GWs 29 and 31 is giving you a headache, why not work out the Scrabble score of your team instead? (Perhaps 'cos you'd then have an even worse headache, right?) Anyway, here are the top ten:

    What's the better option?

    Save a transfer then do:

    Mertesacker > Baines
    Mata > Januzaj
    Adebayor > Aguero

    Next week for a -4

    Or

    Gerrard > Januzaj

    This week then:

    Mertesacker > Baines
    Mata > Gerrard
    Adebayor > Aguero

    Next week for a -8

Top one 7 players this week and -4 next week. Bottom one 8 players this week and -8 next week. Actually I don't know why I'm asking, I think the top one is the no brainer.

      Olsson Bassong Turner Martin

They signed Yobo whos been getting a game as Turner is injured but im not sure what would happen when he returns. Whittaker can play either lb or rb but isnt good enough.

    Boruc / Kelvin Davis
    Gabbidon / Terry / Bruce / Cahill / Olsson
Hazard / Eriksen / Yaya Touré / Mata / Nolan
    Rodriguez / Sturridge / Suárez

2 FT, £1.1m in the bank.

Going to do Eriksen > Paulinho

    Then next week

    Hazard, Rodriguez > Sterling, Aguero

Leaving me this going into the DGW hopefully with 1 FT

Nothing definitive in the rules. It's gonna be interesting to see how it works.

I reckon once you take a player out then his points are lost totally, even if they have a 2nd game. Same for captaincy.

Was planning on getting Olsson in but looks like he's injured. Don't think Yobo - 4.5 and Bassong - 4.7 worth it for a Norwich def. Looking at teams playing gw 29 and dgw 31, Smalling actually looks attractive at 5.1(doubt I can afford Evra). Any strong reason not to get Smalling in?

Don't really get the slating of Adebayor in this. Wasn't a laboured performance from him at all, he worked hard. As a team we were poor but Ade himself was fine. Just because you all own him on FPL and he didn't get the 90 points as captain you all were hoping for does't mean his IRL performance was also poor.

I said this to Iscaki (and on here) at the start of the week, and nothing i saw yesterday has changed my view. Adebayor performs best (especially FPL wise) when Eriksen plays. Barring against a very poor Newcastle side Adebayor has done next to nothing in FPL terms when Eriksen hasn't played

Yeah agree with that. Without Eriksen Ade tries to drop deep and tries to add a bit of a spark especially when Soldado can just sniff around.

I understand from an FPL perspective yesterday wasn't great but seeing people saying same old lazy Adebayor is just wrong.

Have to play short this week. I'm not prepared to sell players I know I'll want back straight away and lose between .7 and 1.1 on each of them.
I'd end up not being able to get them all back or having to sell another good player to do it. If the games looked that promising, then maybe I would, but I see little in the way of monster scores and as we saw in last games, even the smaller teams are now rotating their fringe first team players.
The danger then being that we drop our main non fixture players for someone not guaranteed playing time and lose TV into the bargain.
    Not for me thanks.

agreed. My likely change will be to bring Chester in as i have 11 this week, but I can't use them as I'm missing a keeper. So I'm gonna use my spare FT on getting a DGWer in. I will now hang fire till Thursday or Friday until I know what the crack with Olsson is.

I kept Yaya as none of Adam, Snodgrass or Ince appealed to me and frankly I didn't see more than 4 points for Adam or Snodders and I have Puncheon so didn't fancy doubling with Ince. Seemed pointless to spend to transfers for what I thought would be a net gain of 4 points. Nothing so far has suggested I'll be wrong

He's useless for the next DGW as

    a) Sunderland's isn't the best and

    b) he only has a SGW as he can't play v Pool

but, beyond that am getting tempted by a punt on Borini for future Sunderland DGWs. Seems to deliver when it matters, and is on pens. Gonna be hard to justify using a striker slot on him though

Kim should have got a direct red after only 3 minutes. Slid in from the side at high speed. Luckily the studs of Zeki's standing foot wasn't too deep in the pitch, or his ankled would have exploded.

Later on someone else (can't recall) did a similar act of random violence.

... it seems he was the only player targeted... I wonder why

Bullying of one player by a whole team is not unheard of, I've seen it a few times, against a couple of new Arsenal players I seem to recall.
If one player does it often they get booked or sent off. If all do it, it's not seen as often enough by one player for a card. Very sneaky and usually against a new player to a side or one seen as the biggest threat. Can see a player become unwilling to get involved in the game quite early on.

not for a hit. If he plays you'll be kicking yourself. Wait for more news but likely just keep and hope he plays

Haha, exactly same position as you mate! Same 3 doubtful players too. I am optimistic that at least 2 of them will feature though. We'll see though, good luck! 🙂

yeah, same - they aren't major injuries I don't think (wrist inj, shoulder inj but surgery in the summer, knock) - but it was all looking so rosy! 😉

Whats the story with Ryan Bennett? Was back on the bench last gw. Has he a chance of starting next game?

unlikely. Martin Bassong Yobo Olsson seems to be preferred back line. Olsson is the doubt just now, but I'd think Whittaker and Garrido seem to be the likely replacemens if Olsson misses out.

After the Villa game things could change, Bennett only lost his place due to injury.

Didn't he only gain it because of injury too? I don't think he's ever been 1st choice when all available.

Hmm, just reading that article on Olsson, I am actually rather optimistic that he will be ok to start next week; it just seems that he has an ongoing shoulder problem and Norwich just want to make sure that he isn't trained too hard so that it's not made worse and they can keep on top of it themselves. I mean he was fine to go on yesterday, and he's been playing with it for at least a little while now. We shall see though!

if you can get him for GW30 without gutting your squad then yeah. He could be the big time asset for the final weeks especially as he'll have 2 more fixtures than most other options.

Dont think taking hits is the answer for gw 29 .Main thing is getting the captaincy right
So who would you be your captain ??
    Hazard
    Mata
    Rooney/RVP
    Lallana/lambert
    Any other ?

I think if you have Rooney/RVP, go with them. As I don't, I'm leaning towards Hazard at the moment but am also considering JRod.
