Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 32 – The Weak

Yesterday we took a look at the teams with Strong schedules to follow over the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Today we take a look at the flipside of the coin, as West Ham, Hull City, and a couple of the current top four prepare for testing times ahead over the short-term:

West Ham

wham32

The Hammers host Hull tonight on the back of three straight losses and will be desperate for a turnaround in fortunes as they attempt to scramble to safety. Those four straight wins in February are already a distant memory and one look at the upcoming schedule suggests Big Sam will be preparing to batten down the hatches.

Up next is a trip to Wearside which is winnable enough but the five games following that include Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham. Granted, they do have a home game against Crystal Palace and a trip to West Brom, suggesting that holding defensive assets such as Adrian or Guy Demel for rotation purposes could be a viable tactic. The centre-back pairing is a little up in the air, though, and these fixtures may be the last straw for nervous owners of James Collins or Winston Reid. Attacking partnership Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll may also find Fantasy points hard to come by and are likely to lose owners over the next few weeks.

Hull City

hull32

Another solid home victory and clean sheet for Steve Bruce’s team last weekend boosted the points hauls of budget backline options such as James Chester and Curtis Davies. Their owners may find themselves looking to bench the duo soon, though, as the fixtures turn a little sour before picking up again in the final few weeks of the season. A trip to in-form Stoke, a blank Gameweek 34 and a home tie against Arsenal in the next four are only slightly compensated by the upcoming trip of Swansea. Buying into Hull players looks a little ill-advised right now, then –Nikica Jelavic seemed a decent shout for this week’s double and with another pair of fixtures in Gameweek 37, could yet come into consideration as a mid-priced option up top.

Crystal Palace

palace32

Another team with a double Gameweek that doesn’t quite compensate for the fixtures. Tony Pulis’ side have picked up just two points from their last five and, with a single goal scored over that run, find themselves firmly back in the relegation dog-fight. A failure to improve their away form leaves the Eagles needing to harvest some points from barren-looking ground if they’re to survive a season in the Premier League for the first time. Owners of Joel Ward and Julian Speroni may be minded to hold on as budget bench fillers, especially with their double Gameweek 34 in mind (home to Aston Villa and away to Everton) but investing in their attack looks a futile tactic.

BE WARY OF

Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers’ outfit are in sumptuous form right now and, having scored at least three times in each of their last five matches, have laid down a legitimate stake as title contenders. Home games against rivals Man City and Chelsea will test those credentials to the full, though the weekend visit of Tottenham will hold little fear for the Merseysiders, bearing in mind they’ve already put five past the north London outfit in their own back yard. Trips to West Ham and Norwich have posed problems for many other sides this season and though Luis Suarez owners will be licking their lips at the prospect of another haul against the Canaries, the schedule is enough to suggest that loading up on Liverpool’s attack may come with some risk attached.

Sunderland
One point and a single goal from their last four fixtures is indicative of the Wearsiders’ recent malaise. After a series of spirited showings, Gus Poyet’s side have taken a step backwards and they will need to quickly rediscover their appetite for a scrap if they are to remain in the top-flight. Despite two double Gameweeks to come, Sunderland’s fixtures look anything but prosperous – showdowns against Tottenham, Everton, Man City, Chelsea and Man United suggest that owners of Vito Mannone may be more reliant on save points than clean sheets whilst Adam Johnson, so disappointing for Fantasy investors since his purple patch back in January, has his work cut out to atone for his sins. Three favourable home matches in the final three Gameweeks, including a double in the penultimate round of matches, will bring them back onto our radars late next month.

Arsenal
A home draw with lowly Swansea, on the back of their drubbing at the Bridge, puts the Gunners’ Champions League qualification bid in jeopardy. Arsene Wenger’s side will need to dig deep to rescue dignity from disgrace over the next two crucial fixtures – Man City at home and away to Everton. The fixtures following that are much kinder but right now, buying into the Gunners doesn’t look an appealing prospect at either end of the park. With Laurent Koscielny’s injury dismantling the effective partnership with Per Mertesacker at the heart of defence, none of the Arsenal backline looks good for these games. In midfield, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Tomas Rosicky briefly offered hope and whilst Olivier Giroud scored again to suggest a glimpse of form, it may be better to wait until the fixtures clear for a great run-in before investing.

Don't usually disagree with frisking the fixtures but if West Ham's next 6 make them weak how do Norwich get categorised as strong? Seeing as they play Pool, Chelsea and United...

That's a fair comment, although we do always flag up injuries.

We've also thought about diving deeper and splitting attack and defence, to account for teams like Liverpool who are hard opponents for defence but much easier to score against.

That would be members only stuff though and I haven't had time to look at how it would all work.

Because the next 6 are still relevant, just not as important. More like a tie-breaker.

Norwich were a weird one this week and if any other team had jumped out as having great fixtures, they might have made it instead.

Probably a layout issue for myself. I understand weighting the pucks certainly but when they're presented as 6 I assume them to be equivalent, that's my own fault of course. I do agree that it's an odd week for it.

Because we prioritise the next 4 over the longer term.

It's not an exact science obviously but over the next 4, you'd have to say Norwich stand more chance than the Hammers:

      Norwich: swa, WBA, ful, LIV
      Hammers: sun, LIV, ars, che

The focus on next 4 does cause pretty rapid turnover of fortunes though. Norwich will be swapping swa for mun so they're likely to jump from Strong to Weak. That's the nature of it.

      1. Somalion

Given their away form I think Norwich will at best keep 1 CS and West Ham will also keep 1 CS at best.

Attack wise I'll concede that I would say Norwich have easier games for scoring a goal in certainly.

I think it's more that the 6 fixtures are reported when the next 4 are really what is being examined. I'm not sure how it could be worked but even an analysis of the next 4 with a little "On the horizon" part about their following 2 games after these 4.

        So Norwich could be:
        Strong: swa WBA ful LIV
On the Horizon: che mun (not sure if I have that correct)

To me it adds weight to what you're saying, the next 4 are decent but after that it takes a turn.

As an aside, I do enjoy these articles and appreciate the time put in to them, only trying to add a few thoughts to it as I do quite like this format.

This year, the team of Luke Weston (The Silva Surfers) is striding like no one can catch him. He has maintained #1 position from GW19. Always bringing in players who are going on to give crazy points. This week he brought in Yaya and Skrtel - thats 48 points right there, with one game in hand for Skrtel.

Playing FPL for the first time, I would be eager to know if this happens every year, or is there a competition at the top with that #1 spot changing every week?

I am probably going to do Nolan>Eriksen which will leave me with 0.3 in the bank but is it worth doing Adrian to someone else for a hit? Or is it not worth the hit taking into consideration that anyone in that price range is unlikely to get me more points?

but the fixtures turn for both. Am actually tempted to sawp one for McGregor, but even McGregor's DGW in 37 doesn't look great.

See my post above. I'm struggling to decide what to do with my 'budget' keeper as it seems all budget keepers have a poor run of fixtures now. Plus I don't think its worth taking a hit or downgrading other players (unless you have spare £) to bring in a better keeper so I may just stick...

Everton will definitely push for the top 4 finish. If they win all matches from here, they don't have to depend on others' result. But that's unlikely, but Arsenal winning all their remaining matches is also unlikely.

I am starting to believe that Everton will be in the Champions League next season. And, Man Utd. with no Europe. Let's see.

If William Carvalho can develop his attacking game, and refine his defensive skills, he'll be better than Fernandihno no doubt. Physically the man is like Yaya Toure but with more defensive awareness. I say that because Yaya bombs forward and lets Fernandinho clean things up. If United sign him, 37m is too much in my opinion, but anyway, If he comes they can shift to a 4-1-4-1 maybe with him operating as the '1' in the formation.

I think you'd be surprised, midfield and defence is where they need to focus. I agree all of this is speculation but I think if they shift some dead weight they could plump for that sort of pricetag. The question then is whether or not that's worth it, personally for a lad that young 37 million is a ridiculous price.

Personally I wouldn't mind nearly half out.
Vidic - already booked flight to Italy
      Ferdinand - retire
Giggs - retire, be a coach
Chicharito - I'd love to keep him but if RVP stays he's out. Could use him as good trade bait.
Evra - ship him to Monaco while we can still get value from him.
Nani - whomever will take him at highest $
Young - back to Villa or whomever will take him.
Kagawa - Like the guy but same as Chicharito. Wants to play, no guarantee, good trade bait for someone who'll play.
Cleverley - you know who is a good version of Cleverley? Michael Bradley. And now he's at Toronto FC. Cleverley just doesn't have good command of the midfield. Can go.
      Anderson - ...

The rest I'd keep for another season. Need Right & Left backs (preferably 1 World Class), 2 Central Defenders (at least one World Class), World Class CM and a potential World Class Holding Mid...

Think we got enough in some of the younger kids we got for wingers/ML/MR: Januzaj, Powell, Zaha, Lingard. Wouldn't splash money on wingers til we know what we have there come start next season.
