PlayON Player Picks – Mini Midweek Gameweek

PlayON, the weekly Fantasy Football game, is rolling out a mini-Gameweek over the next couple of days. This comprises of the three fixtures taking place over Tuesday and Wednesday, and with three of the top five all set to face favourable home matches, we scour the PlayON Price List for potential bargains:

There is a £500 GUARANTEED pot on offer for the mini-gameweek – you can enter your team on the multiplayer page here.

If you’re new to PlayON, it is weekly Fantasy Football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built, you can compete for cash. You can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 52% win rate up to this point. You can also create an open challenge against anyone else on the site – just click the amount you want to play for and the number of slots (number of people who can accept your challenge) on the one-on-one page .

For a more in-depth introduction to PlayON, take a look at this season’s introduction article.

Goalkeeper – Wojciech Szczesny
The Arsenal number one sets you back just 7.1m for this evening’s home game against West Ham. Arsene Wenger’s side have conceded just 10 times in front of their own fans this term, and bearing in mind the Hammers have mustered a mere 14 goals on their travels, a home shut-out could be on the cards. Coming in at 9.4m, City’s Joe Hart is relatively budget friendly for a home showdown with a Sunderland side that has found the net only four times in their last eight league matches.

Defender – Per Mertesacker
Once again, the Arsenal defence looks superb value for their home encounter with Sam Allardyce’s side. Mertesacker was in the goals in last weekend’s FA Cup win over Wigan and will be looking for his third league strike of the season later this evening – he can be acquired for only 7.8m in the PlayON Player Price List. With doubts over the Man City left-back berth and Vincent Kompany looking less than 100% against Liverpool on Sunday, we opt for Pablo Zabaleta (9.9m) as the safest route into Manuel Pellegrini’s backline at home to Sunderland, whilst six-goal Seamus Coleman, at 10.0m, is the cheapest of Everton’s back-four to face Palace at Goodison.

Midfielder – David Silva
City’s playmaker is arguably turning in his most impressive displays of the season ahead of a home game against struggling Sunderland. The Black Cats have managed a single clean sheet in eight, and with Manuel Pellegrini’s side scoring nine times in their last two matches at the Etihad, it could be a long night for the visitors. With three goals in his last six, Silva – available for 10.3m – looks poised to wreak havoc tomorrow evening as City attempt to bounce back from their loss at Liverpool. Elsewhere, Aaron Ramsey costs just 7.0m for the Gunners’ clash with West Ham. The Welshman was reported to be a slight doubt by Arsene Wenger in yesterday morning’s press conference but has since been pictured in training and is expected to return for tonight’s crucial match as the Gunners look to get their bid for a fourth place finish back on track. Finally, Gareth Barry (9.4m) offers a reliable route into Everton’s midfield. Whilst other options may be more explosive, Barry’s consistency of starts and deep-lying role has earned him 500+ points in four of his last five appearances, with the PlayON Scoring Matrix suited to his style of play.

Forward – Sergio Aguero
The Argentine will be hoping for a starting role at home to Sunderland tomorrow after signalling his injury comeback against Liverpool with a second-half sub appearance off the bench. Due to his lengthy stint on the sidelines, Aguero remains very budget friendly and comes in at only 8.3m – having scored nine times in as many matches at the Etihad, he’ll be confident of breaching Gus Poyet’s porous backline as City search for a fifteenth win in front of their own supporters. Edin Dzeko remains in contention, though, and could even start alongside Aguero if City opt for two up front. Priced at 12.0m, the Bosnian has four goals in his last five and affords us a strong double-up option for our two-man frontlines. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku will be looking to atone for a weekend blank at Sunderland. The big Belgian – who is available for 12.2m – has scored in three of his last four home appearances and welcomes Palace to Goodison tomorrow evening.

    Actually the only reason i have yaya is cause im scared because a lot of ppl around me have him. never really wanted him in my team anyways. with aguero back and penos off the table(maybe) and with ML rivals getting rid of him now could be the perfect time to get rid. hmmm.. atleast he cant burn me too much now.

          What's the news on Rooney? If he doesn't make it for the dgw and RvP is still sidelined, Mata looks essential. Maybe going yaya to mata isn't such a bad idea?

    YYT - Silva - Eriksen - Lallana - Colback

    Lukaku - Suarez - Sturridge

    Thinking of the following:
    A - Mata
    B - Gerrard
    C - Are there really any other options?

    Given the Yaya news, which of these moves do you reckon looks best?

    (A) Yaya -> Eriksen/Nasri

    (B) Distin -> Azpil (play 4-3-3 this week and hope Yaya recovers fast)

    (C) Baines & Yaya -> Cahill & Eriksen (4 points)
    [leaves enough cash for Lukaku -> RVP next week]

    Gazzaniga
    Baines, Terry, Williamson
    Yaya, Silva, Gerrard, Puncheon
    Suarez, Aguero, Lukaku

        He is "any good", I guess. But odds are he is not £35M good. I mean, he plays DM well - but that's in Portuguese league, and one of the better teams so that's not amazing task to do. Close to zero international experience, no experience on big matches. 22-year-old. £3,5M and we're talking.

              Even £20M would be way too much. He has zero international experience, proven only in Portuguese and Belgian leagues, and in Portuguese league only for one season. One season?! Even one strong season in Premier League wouldn't make him worth £35M!!!! Most of teams in Portuguese league aren't really competitive, that's not a very competitive league. If his price is that high, anybody would be ill advised to make a bid.

                but that is the problem of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man.Utd, etc... they pay to us all that money.. of course you with 35M can buy better, and more

                  Yeah. And that's just the insanity that keeps on amazing me. There's something fishy about all that business though.

                  You know that the players in Portugal are usually largely owned by third parties, so the teams actually receive only part of the transfer fee. These businessmen are pretty dodgy, often convicted criminals and I'm not only talking about Portugal, agents and other people who do business with players all around Europe and probably elsewhere too.

                  So, I've been thinking whether there's something more than meets the eye in these deals. Where is the money going, what money is it? It seems so utterly irrational to bid something like £35M-£45M for players like William Carvalho and Mangala, when Neymar moves for similar price. It just makes no sense, unless these deals concern something that is not apparent to us, something else than the players.

                  Just like some teams appear to be whitewashing some criminal money, usually from east.

      Apparently he has a £37M release clause. But all these players in Portugal have these ridiculous release clauses. The real question is why teams keep on paying them? Most of them are nothing extraordinary and you would have got same or better value for a fraction of their price from elsewhere.
