The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 36

There may be just three rounds of fixtures left for Fantasy managers to plan around, but with injuries, form and a double Gameweek 37 all to consider, we’ve given our Watchlist rankings another update. Our player recommendations are listed in the sidebar on your right – read on for the reasoning behind this week’s refresh:

The Defence

Sunderland’s Vito Mannone is on the rise ahead of three home games and a double in the remaining three rounds of fixtures. The Italian’s heroics at Chelsea last weekend meant he produced a six-point haul despite conceding, with an incredible 14 saves defying Jose Mourinho’s side time and again in the 2-1 triumph – with Cardiff, West Brom and Swansea all rolling up to the Stadium of Light, Mannone’s price of 4.5 and average of 4.6 points per game look too good to ignore for those shopping for a stopper.

Man City’s Martin Demichelis takes top spot in the defender standings. The centre-half has averaged 4.3 ppg so far, yet is owned by only 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers – a goal against West Brom on Monday took his tally to a couple of strikes in the last seven, with three favourable fixtures (cpl, eve & AVL, WHM) still to follow.

David De Gea and Chris Smalling are also on the rise ahead of three home matches (NOR, SUN & HUL) in the next couple of Gameweeks. Smalling is priced at just 4.6 and could be set to benefit from injuries to others at the back as United look to draw a line under the recent dismissal of David Moyes and end the season on a high.

North London duo Laurent Koscielny and Younes Kaboul are on the rise. Koscielny is now down to just 5.4, and having recovered from injury, he helped Arsenal to a clean sheet against Hull last weekend and now has three very favourable fixtures (WBA, NEW, nor) to see out the season. Kaboul may struggle to deliver defensive returns in a Spurs side without a shut-out in seven but the 4.6-priced centre-half has served up a goal and assist in the previous three and faces Stoke, West Ham and Villa from here on in.

Leighton Baines makes a belated entry as our Everton defender of choice. The in-form left-back has produced three assists, a couple of goals and eight bonus points (in addition to five clean sheets) from March onwards, whilst Kevin Mirallas’ season-ending groin injury ensures he’ll be first in line for free-kicks for the final trio of fixtures against Southampton, City and Hull.

Hull’s James Chester is a nailed-on budget option with a double Gameweek 37 on his agenda. Available for only 3.8, the Tigers’ centre-half makes his way to Fulham this weekend before a clash against Villa precedes a tricky trip to Old Trafford – a home game with Everton on the final day of the season hands Steve Bruce’s side the chance to add to their eight clean sheets at the KC this term.

Midfield

Having bagged 55 points in the last five Gameweeks, Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen reaches the summit of this week’s midfield refresh. As the market kicks into overdrive, the Dane has rocketed in price from 6.5 to 7.1 in the last couple of weeks – having played a part in nine of his side’s 14 goals over that period.

United’s Juan Mata moves up in light of the trio of aforementioned home games. The Old Trafford outfit are expected to go on the attack from here on in, and having produced 31 points in two appearances prior to Sunday’s blank at Everton, the Spaniard still carries the form which will surely see many scramble for his signature. With Robin van Persie remaining on the sidelines, Mata’s likely role behind Wayne Rooney also boosts his appeal.

Aaron Ramsey’s 16-point haul against Hull last weekend affords him a significant leap this time around. The Gunners’ final three matches look full of points potential and Ramsey, at just 7.2, has already picked up plenty of new owners after delivering his highest return of the season in his first start of 2014.

Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling climbs ahead of team-mate Steven Gerrard, though there’s no doubt the upcoming pair of fixtures against Chelsea and Palace could prove a little tricky. Nonetheless, with a price of 5.9 (to Gerrard’s 9.9) and a security of starts no longer in doubt due to the absence of Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge, Sterling offers a very budget-friendly route into the league leaders’ free-scoring attack.

Samir Nasri is the highest ranked City midfielder, almost by default. David Silva seems likely to be sidelined for a fortnight according to reports, whilst Yaya Toure is expected back in training but is by no means certain to feature at the weekend – at 8.6 and with a couple of goals in the last four Gameweeks, Nasri’s security of starts and injury-free run gives him the edge. If Toure can prove his fitness, though, the Ivorian will climb above his Etihad team-mate in our thinking.

Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic offers an in-form option in the budget bracket. The Austrian finally seems to have settled after a patchy first few months and, at 5.1, has delivered two goals, three assists and five bonus points in his last six appearances – he now has back-to-back matches against Spurs and Fulham at fortress Britannia before travelling to West Brom on the final day of the season.

Forwards

Luis Suarez holds steady at the top, though both Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney looks equally enticing options and also have four fixtures in the final three Gameweeks to bring in the points. Many Fantasy managers are looking to that premium-priced trio to lead the line for the run-in – Rooney has six goals and an assist in seven, despite United’s poor form, whilst Aguero’s goal and assist against West Brom served a reminder of his potential after the Argentine delivered 12 points in just 63 minutes on Monday evening.

Lukas Podolski and Wilfried Bony are a couple of in-form, mid-price options with plenty still to play for. Podolski has bagged a brace in each of the last two matches, and with Arsenal looking back to their best, offers a viable alternative at 7.8, with an ownership of only 2%. Bony’s double against Newcastle took Swansea a step nearer safety last weekend – the 7.2-priced Ivorian now has back-to-back home games with Villa and Southampton before a final day trip to Sunderland.

Sunderland’s Fabio Borini comes in at just 6.2, and as we saw last weekend, has spot-kick duties to boost his points potential. Whilst Connor Wickham is cheaper (4.6) and has notched three times in the last two, he was forced off with a knock at Stamford Bridge but is hoping to be ready for the weekend – additionally, Borini has far greater underlying statistics ahead of the Black Cats’ trio of home fixtures.

One of the first comments I read on here a couple years back was
Managers who plan their teams in August = FPL managers
Managers who plan their teams in July = FPL champions
Managers who plan their teams in June = unemployed

I was thinking that I have been planning next teams season since March. What does that make me? Also, I'm not the only one like this am I?

Shameful repost. Conversation on previous went to far ahead. Didn't think anyone would respond. But seriously, for many people who's ML are over, planning for next season is all you are left with right. Any hidden gems from this season who's price should drop due to injuries/form. I'll start off with a few
Chester, Brady, Ozil, Lamela, Traore (everton), Dummet

Is it time to ditch Suarez - Liverpool are almsot safe as winners and not a great deal to play for. Suarez already has the golden boo effectively to. He'll want to stay uninjured for the World Cup.

Woudl mean you would be able to gain ground by squeezing in a full complement of DGW or still incentivised strikers upfront e.g. Rooney, Aguero & perhap Borini or Podolski

I would love Chelsea to still be in the mix as well. It would be great if last GW there would still be 3 potential champions.

Probably Liverpool will win it earlier, though.

Even though I have toyed with the idea of getting rid, I have to agree here. The reality is if they didn't have a piss easy game in GW 38 where you'd probably want as much coverage as possible from Liverpool then maybe it would be worth getting rid. Problem is they have Newcastle so you'll have to get him back in and it's not worth the transfers in and out.

There are good alternatives to Suarez, but I don´t buy a single one of your reasons why. The title is far from in the bag, one loss and City is likely to win on goal difference. Also, Suarez is probably one of the hungriest players around (no pun intended), even when 3-4 or even 5 goals up, he´s always chasing those "impossible" balls to score another.

            Team this week:

            Mannone

            Cahill | Coleman | Zabaleta

            Lallana | Nasri | Mata | Ramsey

            Suarez | Aguero (C) | Lukaku

Bench: Howard | Collins | Ward | Bacuna

Already made my FT for the week to bring in Ramsey, 2.2m in the bank.
Considering taking an 8 pointer to bring in Rooney for Lukaku but can't figure out if it's worth it… options seem to be:

            (a) Lallana -> Eriksen / AJ / Sterling - and if so, which?!
            (b) Coleman -> Sagna / Koscielny / Smalling
            (c) Howard (deadwood) to a 3.9m GK and play Mannone (which I plan to anyway)
            (d) One of the above for -4 and bring in Rooney next week.

            Thoroughly unsure! Thanks

Thanks guys. I'm convinced Eriksen won't end the season well, his last fixtures aren't as nice as you'd first think (West Ham and Stoke away tough, Villa will be fighting relegation). Kind of leaning towards AJ and Rooney in for Lalla and Lukaku. Again, -8 feels wrong but the team will look so much nicer...

Tempted by something similiar (see lengthy post above) - you think Johnson is worth bringing in? Hasn't scored highly in the last few but I've not seen his games - has he been bad or just unlucky? Great fixtures and good value.

I'm not sure about Johnson either but I already have Eriksen and Ramsey and he seemed like the best option to allow me to bring Rooney in. I haven't really seen Johnson's last few games but they have been difficult fixtures so I didn't expect him to score too highly.

Anybody else of the believe that the Utd squad needing an overhaul is just an excuse for Moyes poor form?

This squad won the league at a canter and has strengthened with two of the best PL players from last season, Fellaini and Mata. Moyes just couldn't get the best out of them.

This Utd squad only needs four signings to replace the old guard and provide competition.

The players have been awful but it seems unfathomable that they would have been so terrible under Fergie or even another manager like Carlo or LVG. Players to blame but must come down to the manager in the most part.

Agreed, they were (obviously) better under Fergie, but is it Moyes being bad at motivating them or is it the players fault for getting motivated? He didn't have any problems motivating the Everton bunch.

Playing a bit of devil's advocate here as I don't think Moyes did very well either, but I think the players' powers are being heavily underrated to say the least.

Probably a bit of both. Players didn't like him from the start (their fault) but at the same time he was unable to handle their egos in any way in the same way Fergie or LvG would.

Definitely a bit of both, which is my point. I don't think him and his methods were backed properly by the players from the get-go. Reasons I'm mentioning it is we've seen the same thing in Chelsea with AVB and in that case the players got way more blame than United at the moment who are piling it all on Moyes.

I´d say that Liverpool´s best 11 is stronger than United´s best 11, but for a squad to compete in CL and for the PL, then I agree that Liverpool need to strengthen with a few quality players.

I don't buy the squad not good enough excuse at all. Won the league by 11 points last season, can't be that bad. Needs some reinforcements like you say but I refuse to believe that all the under-performing players (Cleverley, Smalling) or the ones that are too old (Rio, Vidic) would actually not be good enough under Fergie or another manager with a clear gameplan/motivation.

No chance of getting either Coleman or Kroos though mate. Think Shaw, Garay/Mangala and a CM is much more likely.

It was both, for me. The squad was creaking a bit but Moyes struggled to adapt from Everton mindset to United mindset. He tried to abolish a deeply ingrained and quite unusual attacking style too quickly.

That's quite a quartet of players you're bringing in there. Would make a big difference and similar quality would have made a difference last summer also. Moyes had a limited time in which to work last summer and while Fellaini clunked this year his signing was seen as a good move in the summer. A director in Woodward who had no experience in the xfer market was of little use either. Add to this the attitudes of some of the players he came in to work with and it was never a recipe for success. Moyes failed at Man U but the club also failed Moyes.

This arguemt of the players is flawed.

Following that line they wouldn't need a manager and could manage themselves perfectly.

It isn't the case. The media ate deflected the flack from Moyes when they should just call a spade a spade.

Was always going to happen as they're appealing the ban.

Allows them to make transfers this summer and then if it does get upheld (unlikely) they'll be set for a couple of windows.

Was the same with Chelsea after Kakuta.

From that little information that we have been leaked it seems likely that the ban will be upheld in the end, though. Meanwhile, they have to prepare for a whole year without transfers. That will be interesting, albeit not as interesting as seeing them crumble down with their current old and unbalanced squad.

It is a completely different situation to the one at Chelsea.

Barcelona have committed the crime with somewhere between 5 and 10 players and admitted they did it by saying "we didn't mean it" pretty much.

Scandalous that FIFA are giving them this opportunity this summer.

Actually, admit it, you don't really know what has happened at Barca. You have second or third hand information, people saying "yeah, they did it". With Chelsea we at least know 100% sure that they did it.

This is pretty much what I "know" too, but do we really know what has happened there? What I "know" is only what some journalists have told us, it seems that they have clearly violated the rules. but I don't really know that, I have no idea if those journalists even have direct information about it themselves. That's all I want to say about it. I think they are probably guilty and wil lbe judged as guilty and get that ban, but atm I at least do not know it. If you have some great sources, please inform me.

Nah you're right, I agree with you, I'm just upset they're going to get away with it 😛

They have such a fantastic academy, they don't need to poach everyone's youngest players too.

Madrid aren't much better, but at least we wait until they're over 20 and pay a few million for them 😀

I agree about that talent hogging they practice. Great academy already, don't need to buy all youngsters at age of 10 or so. It's fecking violent. They end up destroying most of those players careers. But same goes for Chelsea and City and a bunch of other big clubs.

Annoying thing is that FFP actually favors that talent hogging, because you can be forgiven overspending if you, in turn, sign underage players from abroad to your own academy!!! It's an outrageously stupid rule!

Anyone has the right to appeal. And the rules are that if the verdict is appealed, the punishment is suspended.

It's got nothing to do with FIFA giving them an opportunity, those are the legal rules that must be followed.

Yes but how long will they push back this sentence/appeal?

I know Barca are obviously going to appeal it, but it shouldn't take 4 months to confirm a verdict they're already accusing them of.

                      That's not how appeals work.

You legally have to re-examine everything, it'll go to a totally different court of appeal that could easily find a different verdict.

These things take time, I know it's convenient for Barca but you can't go changing the rules because of it.

The reaction surrounding it when it first broke from every Spanish journalist I follow, was that Barca are doomed and they were terrified but going to appeal it anyway.

I'm just annoyed that they're able to get around it, Barca have gotten away with murder, the big clubs never get punished.

I know none of the details of the case so can't really comment on the facts of it.

That said, Chelsea got off on appeal when it was pretty obvious that they were in the wrong, wouldn't be surprised if Barca were the same.

That was earlier on, though. It may be a bit stricter now. I'd expect they will get that ban if they are found guilty.

We don't really know what happened so nobody really knows.

The effect now will more be a reputation thing rather than a footballing impact.

They can buy 4-5 players this Summer to cover retirements over the next couple of seasons. Tbh the big signings they've made over the last 4-5 years haven't really improved the team (Fabregas, Sanchez, Neymar, Song etc.)

I agree that we don't know what happened. Hence the clause "if they are found guilty", maybe I should have precised "to what they are suspected now"

don't be stupid. All they needed to do was to appeal the decision and they are fully entitled to do that. The sanction cannot take effect before the case is closed.

              good day lads.

Will Giggs start Vidic you think? Vidic is fit right? Im wondering with only a few matches left in his United career. having been club captain, PL player of the year, longtime Giggs teammate, yada, yada, yada.....

this is for a non FPL league where Vidic is super cheap right now.

Assuming Jones covers right back or plays in midfield, I think it is evenly split between Smalling, Evans and Vidic who plays in the two CB positions. But just guessing.

United defence is a no go til the end of the season.

United could easily keep at least 2 clean sheets in their triple home games. Wouldn't touch Sunderland's defence.

This article is very interesting for stat-heads. It's from the beginning of the season and is a look at how much United would come to miss Fergie. It was prophetic.

              http://www.statsbomb.com/2013/08/epl-2013-14-season-preview-manchester-united/

Basically, Fergie's united didn't conform to any stats model they could find. Every other team in Europe can be modelled and their league performance predicted with some degree of accuracy from the numbers around shots taken/conceded. Fergie was doing something subtly *different* with his players that defied regular analysis. Perhaps that special something is what allowed an average squad to over-perform and win the league. If so, Moyes could never hope to replicate that.

Very interesting, we all noticed a huge decline in United's performances these past few years yet they won a title and lost out on goal difference. I mean it was a regular occurrence that they would be played off the park by a so called lesser team but somehow pretty much always walked away with 3 points.

Much agree with this. I have for long, maybe always felt that manU's squads have been, yeah, good, but not quite top, and that they're not really dominating all that much either, but somehow they just can get the goals and win the matches. There used to be something strange and surprising in manU. It was partly the winning culture they had grown. They knew they always still can win it, and played that way. But it was also SAF's tactical bravado, going with brave, unexpected moves to search for the victory.

This is a lovely quote from the article:

"To put it another way, United were almost inexplicably good last year. Everything about David Moyes suggests that he operates in the world of muggles. Fergie was secretly headmaster of footballing Hogwarts."

I don't know what muggles and hogwarts mean, but I think I get the idea.

Hah - it's a Harry Potter reference. 'Muggles' are regular folk, who can't do magic. Hogwarts is the school for wizards (and muggles don't even know it exists).

Oh, okay, I know Harry Potter. Sort of. Well enough to know what you mean. I think I've seen some movie or two, but it was not in English, so everything was translated and thus I was not aware of these names. Don't remember what they were called though.

Anyway, yeah, you affirmed, I got the idea pretty well. Great way to put that point, even better now that I know what those muggles and Hogwarts are.

Not understanding this whole Barca bribed FIFA thing, they're entitled to an appeal just like any other team. As much as I don't like Barca, they've only used the means available to them in this case. What I'm saying in regards to the appeal is- hate the game not the player. You can hate Barca for being dodgy pr**ks in the first place though

                  Anything transfer worth a -4?

                  Mannone
                  Baines-Ivanovic-Koscielny
                  Nasri-Puncheon-Ramsey-Eriksen
                  Rooney (C), Aguero, Suarez.

                  Chambers, Colback, Ward

Thinking of changing captain to Ramsey.

Normally i avoid taking hits at all costs but recently i've loved taking them, is it because its end of the season or injuries?

Anyways, Here's to another -8 this week!

                  Random question

Does anyone know any good sites for detecting if a certain site is known for scams/fraud?

Looking at airline tickets here but never heard of the website..

                  Currently on:
                  Mannone ( Adrian)
                  Coleman/Chester/Cahill (Ward/Williamson)
                  Mata/Eriksen/Nasri/Gerrard ( Noone)
                  Suarez/Kun/Lukaku
                  1,5m ITB 0 FT

Want to get in Smalling+Rooney for Lukaku+Coleman but not sure if it's worth -8 and if it might be better o wait a round and see how things work out without Moyes. Going for Toure>Gerrard next week if Toure is fit so would have 8 dgw players if i'd take the hit. Thoughts..?
