This Much We Know – Gameweek 36

With nine matches in the Gameweek already played out, we assess the lessons learned over the weekend’s action. Sunderland’s red-hot forward, Everton’s toils up top, Swansea’s Spanish playmaker, Ryan Giggs’ impact at the United helm and Jose’s counter-attacking masterclass are amongst this Monday’s lunchtime topics:

Wickham is living up to the “Saviour” tag…
Five goals in his last three appearances, with an assist and eight bonus points also thrown in, highlights the incredible impact of the Sunderland youngster. Farmed out on loan twice by Gus Poyet this term, Wickham was plying his trade for Leeds as recently as last month before a season-ending injury to Steven Fletcher persuaded the Black Cats boss to recall him. His return has helped kick-start an astonishing turnaround as Sunderland drew with City before ending Jose’s unbeaten record at Stamford Bridge – the weekend mauling of Cardiff elevated the Wearsiders out of the drop zone, and with Swansea and West Brom still to roll up to the Stadium of Light, the Wickham bandwagon is rapidly picking up speed.

Giggs will rely on the old guard… while they remain…
It was somewhat telling that, in his first match in charge, Ryan Giggs opted for experience at the back in order to secure a morale-boosting win over Norwich. Regardless of the fact that Nemanja Vidic is on his way to Inter and both Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are out of contract at the end of the season, Giggs’ short-term stint at the helm means that, unlike David Moyes, he doesn’t need to plan for the future. With the old hands helping the Red Devils to a first home clean sheet since Gameweek 23, the interim-manager’s decision proved a wise one and suggests he may well retain a settled backline for a double Gameweek 37 which hands the Reds back-to-back home games against Sunderland and Hull.

Rooney’s backing for Giggs showed on the pitch…
Initially partnered by Danny Welbeck in a 4-4-2 before Juan Mata’s eye-catching display off the bench, the England international looks the standout candidate ahead of the double. Rooney turned in a display that bristled with attacking intent, peppering John Ruddy’s goal with seven attempts over his 90 minutes, with his brace taking the frontman’s tally to eight in as many matches. Whilst there still may be doubts over Giggs’ attacking set-up in light of Mata’s cameo, Rooney’s current 16% ownership looks set to rapidly climb before the weekend deadline – many will head into the double with the armband firmly attached.

Martinez is struggling to prevent Everton fizzling out…
Only three teams created fewer chances than Everton this weekend – the Merseysiders mustered a shot every 10.4 minutes compared to 7.2 minutes for their average on the road this season. Roberto Martinez’ team managed just two efforts on target over the entire 90 minutes in Saturday lunchtime’s 2-0 defeat at St Mary’s as their Champions League dreams begins to subside – with Kevin Mirallas sidelined for the season and Romelu Lukaku notching once in the last six, the Toffees are stuttering over the finishing line. With a home clash against title-chasing City this weekend, their prospects of even finishing fifth are being threatened by Spurs, with Lukaku’s poor form the catalyst for a major exodus ahead of the double.

Hernandez has to be a middle man…
Installed in a central role behind Wilfried Bony for the vital home encounter against Villa, the Spaniard was a pivotal figure as the Swans secured their survival with a convincing 4-1 win. With an ongoing ankle complaint forcing Michu back onto the sidelines, Hernandez was handed license to roam by Garry Monk and turned in a display to suggest that he’s more deserving of a move into the middle, with his displays far less influential when shifted out wide. Whilst Michu offers a more direct threat in “the hole”, Hernandez’ playmaking talents are perhaps a better fit for Monk’s system and may yet see him come to the fore next time – providing he, too, can steer clear of injuries.

Mourinho can set a side up to resist any force…
Liverpool’s irresistible run of form came crashing to an end yesterday, with their arch-nemesis once again breaking the Merseysiders’ hearts. Chelsea rolled up to Anfield without John Terry and Petr Cech, whilst Gary Cahill was utilised only as a late second-half sub, with yesterday’s team clearly selected with one eye on Wednesday’s clash against Atletico. Nonetheless, Jose Mourinho showed his tactical acumen by plotting a superb counter-attacking display as the Blues registered a seventeenth clean sheet of the season. Fantasy football can at times be frustratingly unpredictable, but with Jose back at the Bridge, we can always rely on a Blues defence that has now conceded just two goals away from home to the current top eight.

Toure simply cannot be tamed…
Back from a brief groin injury, the Ivorian delivered the points yet again yesterday. Toure’s goal and assist in the 2-0 win at Palace earned the maximum bonus as he delivered returns for the twentieth time this season – an outstanding run of consistency. The City midfielder has been a Fantasy Football force this season – for all the deadball strikes, his form from open play has confirmed Toure’s heavy-hitter status and sets him up to be placed in the very top bracket next term. Given that he has scored 19 times from just 26 attempts on target, though, it remains to be seen if he can maintain this season’s scoring rate and live up to expectations.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would really appreciate some help. Which of these moves are the best?

    A) Giroud + Gerrard + Baines > Rooney(c) + Mata + Alonso (-8)
    B) Giroud + Baines > Rooney(c) + Alonso (-4)
    C) Gerrard + Baines > Mata + Evra/Demi (-4)
    D) Gerrard > Mata

Sorry to keep doing this but I am so fed up with losing in my mini league I really need to get this right.

Im thinking of doing Coleman, Zabaleta and Lallana to Alonso, Evra and Toure for -8, is it

    A) CRAZY

    or

    B) GOOD

I can't get Toure without losing Zabaleta as I have Nasri and Aguero

It's the number of players. My conservative option is to just swap Coleman to Evra for free but means not having Toure and playing Lallana.

Repost from bottom of last page!!

In my opinion, the reason I have a problem with Mourinho's tactics is this:

Madrid showed against Bayern in the first leg how to play the game without possession, they defended excellently and when given the opportunity, broke with speed and tried to enforce their style of football on top of Bayern as fast as possible, all whilst keeping the ball and playing out of defence while under pressure..

What Chelsea did vs Liverpool was not the same, they weren't good in possession and just resorted to kicking it away most of the time, literally just focusing on snuffing out every single chance, no creativity, just destruction. Not counter attacking, purely parking the bus.

The reason football is the biggest sport in the world is because it entertains so many people, moments of brilliance and individual genius are why we love watching the games, we're all waiting to see something like what Shelvey did this week.

Chelsea did what they set out to do, courtesy of a massive mistake from Steven Gerrard at the wrong moment, but without that slip, which you CANNOT account for in preparing for a game, then this performance could have been embarrassing for Chelsea, if it had been 0-0 after that sort of display.

Granted, it ended up being 0-2, courtesy of a mistake and a 94th minute break, but José and Chelsea can count themselves slightly lucky imo. If teams want to play defensive, park the bus tactics, that's fine, and a good tactic in some cases, but for a Champions League semi finalist to drown out the game vs Atletico forcing a bore draw, and then try to do the same vs Liverpool but are granted 3 points from Stevie, its almost embarrassing, its not trying to play the game, its just trying to win.

I wouldn't call myself a purist, I just want to see the game played in a way that has both teams actually trying to attack every now and again, trying to impose their footballing philosophy on the opposition, otherwise football will die out and it will become too results focused, killing all freedom and players like Ronaldinho who wouldn't necessarily fit into one of these "well drilled systems" will begin to die out.

Just my twenty euros worth. (PLC 😉 )

Football isn't all about results for me. I will remember the Blackpool team that came up all guns blazing under Holloway and were relegated more than I'll remember the Wolves or Reading teams that came up, were defensive, got the results to stay up, and went down the next season.

I love the sport for the moments of brilliance and people doind surprising and innovative things, not suffocating the good things out of a game.

      1) Liverpool are no Bayern and more importantly Chelsea B are no Madrid. I can dream of Salah becoming Bale one day, but that day is probably atleast 5 years from now.

      2) "trying to impose their footballing philosophy on the opposition" which is exactly what Mourinho did

      3) Every win, be it in the league or CL, needs luck. United's league campaign last season is a perfect example.

If Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern etc won 2-0 playing like that, they would be booed off the field.

If the result is all that matters, then why does anyone watch football? Why not just check the results of games on a Monday morning?

Also, it's one thing doing it with a team like Palace and West Ham, who have no option, but building a squad and spending millions upon millions building a boring team is a disservice to football.

There's a fine line, just because millions upon billions have come into the game, that doesn't mean you should completely abandon the entertainment purpose of it, otherwise it's defeating the purpose of pumping money into it?

Football, in itself, is for entertainment, and nothing else. It's for glory, pride, passion, entertainment, skill and SPORT. Not business and economics and doing whatever it takes to grind out crap results just so you can pretend to be on the same level talent-wise as some others (I don't mean Chelsea here, obviously they have the talent, which annoys me more that they didn't attempt to use it)

Unfortunately I think you're watching the wrong league. Brazil leagues are where I go for lots of flair and entertainment, Germany is decent too because, while the money is still huge, wages are not necessarily on a par to England. Try the J leagues as well, some great displays in those games.

Not the same standard of players though, I guess that's why I follow Madrid in Spain but the rest of the league has fallen away slightly in terms of quality except for the big 3...

I don't like the notion that money has already ruined football, I still think people like Brendan Rodgers and Martinez and Guardiola are all keeping the true entertainment of football alive.

Klopp is a great one for it, very exciting.

Guardiola, well he's an example of money ruining football. This Summer Bayern will spend again to make sure they gut all other competition in the league.

I think there's a balance, I don't think Liverpool or Chelsea have it right. Liverpool have wonderful attack play, a joy to watch, but I actually find it infuriating when they relentlessly conceded goals too. Defensive masterclasses need to be hailed as well as attacking ones, Liverpool haven't had one all season.

Chelsea teach that, especially in big games, goals aren't very important, you need one or two but not lots. I don't think that's right either. I think balance is achievable between the two, it's why I watch Dortmund so much. When all are fit, their defensive ability is great but their attack is also absolutely vicious.

Klopp is a breath of fresh air, I love people like him that make the game as a whole more fun (unless you're a 4th official, then avoid Klopp 😉 ).

That's Bayern's fault, not Guardiola, Pep loves working with youths, its just the club's way to buy all of the best German talent, they always have done.

I agree, although Liverpool seemed to be the most defensively solid team in the league at the start of the season 😆

Dortmund are a fantastic team to watch, but I'm terrified of them after what Lewandowski did to Madrid last year 😯 they were immense..

The object of the game on the field is to win. The object of the game in the league office is to entertain. If the product doesn't entertain revenues dwindle and less people watch.

But it's not the job if a manager to entertain. It's his job to win. If parking the bus is successful (and Stoke, WH, CP have already shown it can be - Chelsea is now showing it will be with more quality on the field) then it's the league problem to do something about it not Mourinho's.

Defending is an art in football that is not easy to master. Otherwise every team would do it. The fact is that Chelsea this season have an excellent organised defence but are lacking up front, and so they play to their strengths. Despite this Chelsea have been attacking this season (beating City away, 6-0 against Arsenal etc), but these last two defensive performances have over-shadowed this.

IRISH MADRIDISTA - I can understand your point of view, but I think it is too simplistic to focus on attacking as the defining feature of football.

I don't think Chelsea needed to necessarily be attacking, I just would have liked to see them get a bit of possession and actually try to play through a very dodgy Liverpool defence.

Norwich showed more self belief against Liverpool than Chelsea did, it was tough to watch.

I may be on my own here, but for 2 consecutive games running, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the hard working, defensive displays that the likes of Cole, Azpilicueta, Cahill and Ivanovic have shown. For me its an art that "purists" don't like, but Mourinho sees its worth. Thats why he is a better manager than Wenger, as he has multiple philosophies. Wenger plays the same way and they get found out time and time again. Watch Chelsea v Liverpool at the Bridge this year, Chelsea passed and played Liverpool off the park and deserved more than a 2-1 win.

Being an ex-defender myself, I love watching the defence being solid as a rock, but I HATE it when I see them just boot the ball away when there's a midfielder looking for it in the middle. It shows a lack of confidence on the ball and a lack of willingness to take on the opposition players.

Chelsea beat them comfortably at home, they didn't need to destroy the game away from home.

I enjoy good defenders as well, but you could stick 10 players of any level on the 18 yard line and frustrate any opposition. It's no great defensive display, it's no tactical masterclass, it's just negative. It's only through amazing luck that it didn't finish 0-0.

Wenger, just like any coach, could play the same way. Mourinho's genius is getting Chelsea ownership and fans to buy into it, something that couldn't happen at Arsenal. Outside London, many Chelsea fans are fans because of their recent success. As an American Arsenal fan if two years, I speak with confidence that recent Arsenal fans don't become Arsenal fans because of recent success. We choose Arsenal because of history and style. We'd happily take the Tony Adams days but doubt we could be sold on parking the bus.

No team that harbours aspirations of winning the champions league and being the best team in the world that season, should ever put in displays like Chelsea have against Atletico and Liverpool.

To be honest I enjoyed the game, but then I had no investment in it. It will be a long while until Forest play a league game in Liverpool lol

    Tomas Class

[Was I nervous?] No, and I must admit that surprised me. Maybe it was like that because I only learned about my presence in the starting XI on Sunday, so I didn't have time to get nervous...

...Hopefully people couldn't tell that it was my first game. Naturally, I learned where I need to improve and I what I have to work on, but overall I had a good feeling.
