World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Brazil

As some of you may have noticed, there’s a tournament taking place in Brazil next month. The 2014 World Cup kicks off on Thursday June 12 – just six days before the new Premier League fixture list is announced – and lasts all the way until Sunday July 13, filling the time perfectly until Fantasy managers can begin to plan for the new domestic campaign:

We’ll be covering a handful of Fantasy games for the upcoming tournament (more on that later in the week) and as the days begin to tick down, we kick off our coverage with Group A and run the rule over host nation, Brazil.

Phil Scolari’s side get the tournament underway on Thursday June 12 at 9pm against Croatia, then square up to Mexico five days later at 8pm before entertaining Cameroon in their final Group A match on June 23 at 9pm:

The tournament favourites, they captured last year’s Confederations Cup in convincing style, winning all six games including triumphs over the likes of France, Italy, Uruguay and Spain. Such rampant form means that Fantasy managers will be desperate to load up on the South Americans and their chances of delivering us early points are boosted by a scheduling quirk which means that both Brazil and Mexico both play twice in the first round of fixtures. Their June 17 showdown, which takes place at 8pm, kicks off before Russia face South Korea in the second match of Group H at 11pm the same evening – the downside is that Brazil and Mexico are without a match in Matchday 2.

Recent Friendlies

Since Scolari returned to the helm, Brazil have played a total of 20 times. Starting off with a Wembley defeat to England, the South Americans won one and drew four of Big Phil’s first six matches but have since found their form and, having adjusted to a change in style, have triumphed in 13 of the last 14, with a defeat in Switzerland last year the only blip on an otherwise perfect record.

Having analysed the teamsheets, we list the main performers for Scolari’s side from the start of last June’s Confederations Cup onwards, in a run that has seen them score 42 times and concede just six, with nine clean sheets accrued in that 14-match streak.

Most Starts Neymar (14), Paulinho, David Luiz (13), Thiago Silva, Oscar, Luiz Gustavo (11), Julio Cesar, Marcelo, Hulk (10)

Top Scorers Neymar (11), Fred, Jo (5), Oscar (4)

Most Assists Neymar (7), Paulinho (4), Oscar, Fred (3)

The Key Targets

As the above stats show, Neymar is the standout option by some distance. The only player to start every one of the previous 14 fixtures, he fired a hat-trick in Brazil’s final friendly against South African – handed a role on the left of a 4-2-3-1 formation, the Barcelona man has scored or assisted in 12 of those matches; a clear indication of his excellent consistency.

Chelsea’s Oscar looks vital to Scolari’s side – providing he has fully recovered from the thigh strain that curtailed his domestic game time at the end of the season. Having cemented the role as most advanced central midfielder for the hosts, Oscar has produced three goals and an assist in his last five appearances for his country. Up front, Fred is Scolari’s number one when fully fit. He’s featured in only one of the last seven matches due to a long-term thigh problem, though, but still managed to produce five goals and three assists in eight starts.

At the back, investment amongst Scolari’s regulars may well come down to both player price and scoring system across the Fantasy games. Given their recent resilience, many will be eyeing up the likes of attacking full-backs Dani Alves or Marcelo, though it worth noting that both have managed just an assist apiece over those 14 matches. David Luiz and Thiago Silva are nailed-on at the heart of the back-four and the Chelsea man’s penchant for a long shot may persuade some to snap him up if he’s cheaper than the Brazilian skipper.

The Long Shots

An inconsistent figure in the Premier League last term, Tottenham’s Paulinho has played all but one of the previous 14 and is a key figure in the centre of the park – he’s chipped in with an assist in four of the last five games for his country. He looks assured of his start in central midfield and will be given the freedom to bomb forward with the security of Luiz Gustavo anchoring in the middle of the park.

Whilst it’s difficult to see anyone eclipsing Neymar amongst Scolari’s main men in attack, Hulk could be worth a flutter. Having started 10 of the last 14 on the opposite flank and emerged from the bench on a couple of occasions, he seems to have found his form in recent matches, grabbing two goals and a trio of assists in the last three friendlies.

Finally, if Fred struggles for full fitness, back-up option Jo may come into contention – he has scored five times from 12 appearances, with seven of those coming courtesy of the bench.

How do you pronounce a Van Gaal then? For some reason, I assumed it would be "Van Haal" but Bryan Roy said "Van Gaal" on the radio and he is Dutch so I guess I was wrong?

Big time , I reckon we will see plenty of goals in the near future ( and lots conceded ) but I might as well support the Dutch anyways , always had a bit of craic with their supporters over the years !

problem is the dutch have a soft 'G' .......... not a hard english/german one like gore or gash........ it sounds like bringing up phlegm

that said i dont know if thats how you pronounce his family name

In effect to English it would be van Haal. The G in Dutch is pronounced more as an H except with a more gutteral throat sound. This is more pronounced in different regions, for example quite strong in Amsterdam, but it is a very soft G in the south and in Rotterdam.

This will be my 8th world cup and my favourite was when I was 13 and I thought England were going to win it ,quite possibly the last time I shed a tear over footy when Germany done us on pens in 1990,fantastic tourney and I cant wait for it to get going again, not going to bother with any fantasy during this one ,really looking forward to some long nights in the pub with the lads,i hope England do well but cant see it,ive already had £50 on Germany at 6/1 and will probably get skint by paddy power by the end of the month, loads of boozing and betting and at the end FPL is round the corner, #happydays..

Fabregas better at tracking back though and providing protection for Gibbs. Doesn't matter so much if the man in the middle's not tracking back as Rambo and Wilshere will be in there. In reality you'd probably have the front 4 interchanging throughout the game.

Once when I was living in the heart of a pomegranate, I heard a seed saying, “Someday I shall become a tree, and the wind will sing in my branches, and the sun will dance on my leaves, and I shall be strong and beautiful through all the seasons.”
Then another seed spoke and said, “When I was as young as you, I too held such views; but now that I can weigh and measure things, I see that my hopes were vain.”
And a third seed spoke also, “I see in us nothing that promises so great a future.”
And a fourth said, “But what a mockery our life would be, without a greater future!”
Said a fifth, “Why dispute what we shall be, when we know not even what we are.”
But a sixth replied, “Whatever we are, that we shall continue to be.”
And a seventh said, “I have such a clear idea how everything will be, but I cannot put it into words.”
Then an eighth spoke—and a ninth—and a tenth—and then many—until all were speaking, and I could distinguish nothing for the many voices.
And so I moved that very day into the heart of a quince, where the seeds are few and almost silent.

            For your pleasure

Varela could be in place of Nani, on the left.
                  H.Almeida also in for Postiga.
This duo its probably not fit to start… But it's almost 1 month to go.

Not very strong on the striker front are they. Then again all they need is a target plan for Ronaldo to play off.

                Innit!

Knowing me something will come up and I'll end up missing the deadline and not making my transfers..

QPR are in the playoff final too earlier that day so I may either be drowning my sorrows or celebrating with a sneaky sherry before tea time if we win. Either way I'm bound to forget to change my team.

Putting kids to bed time for me.

              Long day.

Wife's dad's funeral in the morning.

Had to cut 6 months worth of unmowed lawn afterwards, but my old petrol mower finally gave up so I had to get a new one and assemble it before wading through grass up to my knees in places.

Just had a shower and kids finished late tea. Putting daughter to bed now..

Will miss the big man terribly.

Will miss coming home from work in the school holidays and seeing him in the back garden having waterfights with his grandchildren.

I must've had a good workout today as I am aching all over already. Either that or I'm far too overweight and getting old.

As its really slow on here, I am just going to put this out there, get it off my chest...

Sometimes when I am in the mood for a little self romance, I use Youtube, just for a variation.

The problem I am now having is the suggestions that Youtube have on my home page.

Some of them are cool music tunes, but most of them are hot ladies, if ya know what i'm talking about ye boy ya 😉

However, the last week, Mark's face has started to appear in the middle of these suggestions, for the scoutcast episodes!!!!

Talk about ruining the moment!!!! 🙁
