World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Brazil

As some of you may have noticed, there’s a tournament taking place in Brazil next month. The 2014 World Cup kicks off on Thursday June 12 – just six days before the new Premier League fixture list is announced – and lasts all the way until Sunday July 13, filling the time perfectly until Fantasy managers can begin to plan for the new domestic campaign:

We’ll be covering a handful of Fantasy games for the upcoming tournament (more on that later in the week) and as the days begin to tick down, we kick off our coverage with Group A and run the rule over host nation, Brazil.

Phil Scolari’s side get the tournament underway on Thursday June 12 at 9pm against Croatia, then square up to Mexico five days later at 8pm before entertaining Cameroon in their final Group A match on June 23 at 9pm:

The tournament favourites, they captured last year’s Confederations Cup in convincing style, winning all six games including triumphs over the likes of France, Italy, Uruguay and Spain. Such rampant form means that Fantasy managers will be desperate to load up on the South Americans and their chances of delivering us early points are boosted by a scheduling quirk which means that both Brazil and Mexico both play twice in the first round of fixtures. Their June 17 showdown, which takes place at 8pm, kicks off before Russia face South Korea in the second match of Group H at 11pm the same evening – the downside is that Brazil and Mexico are without a match in Matchday 2.

Recent Friendlies

Since Scolari returned to the helm, Brazil have played a total of 20 times. Starting off with a Wembley defeat to England, the South Americans won one and drew four of Big Phil’s first six matches but have since found their form and, having adjusted to a change in style, have triumphed in 13 of the last 14, with a defeat in Switzerland last year the only blip on an otherwise perfect record.

Having analysed the teamsheets, we list the main performers for Scolari’s side from the start of last June’s Confederations Cup onwards, in a run that has seen them score 42 times and concede just six, with nine clean sheets accrued in that 14-match streak.

Most Starts Neymar (14), Paulinho, David Luiz (13), Thiago Silva, Oscar, Luiz Gustavo (11), Julio Cesar, Marcelo, Hulk (10)

Top Scorers Neymar (11), Fred, Jo (5), Oscar (4)

Most Assists Neymar (7), Paulinho (4), Oscar, Fred (3)

The Key Targets

As the above stats show, Neymar is the standout option by some distance. The only player to start every one of the previous 14 fixtures, he fired a hat-trick in Brazil’s final friendly against South African – handed a role on the left of a 4-2-3-1 formation, the Barcelona man has scored or assisted in 12 of those matches; a clear indication of his excellent consistency.

Chelsea’s Oscar looks vital to Scolari’s side – providing he has fully recovered from the thigh strain that curtailed his domestic game time at the end of the season. Having cemented the role as most advanced central midfielder for the hosts, Oscar has produced three goals and an assist in his last five appearances for his country. Up front, Fred is Scolari’s number one when fully fit. He’s featured in only one of the last seven matches due to a long-term thigh problem, though, but still managed to produce five goals and three assists in eight starts.

At the back, investment amongst Scolari’s regulars may well come down to both player price and scoring system across the Fantasy games. Given their recent resilience, many will be eyeing up the likes of attacking full-backs Dani Alves or Marcelo, though it worth noting that both have managed just an assist apiece over those 14 matches. David Luiz and Thiago Silva are nailed-on at the heart of the back-four and the Chelsea man’s penchant for a long shot may persuade some to snap him up if he’s cheaper than the Brazilian skipper.

The Long Shots

An inconsistent figure in the Premier League last term, Tottenham’s Paulinho has played all but one of the previous 14 and is a key figure in the centre of the park – he’s chipped in with an assist in four of the last five games for his country. He looks assured of his start in central midfield and will be given the freedom to bomb forward with the security of Luiz Gustavo anchoring in the middle of the park.

Whilst it’s difficult to see anyone eclipsing Neymar amongst Scolari’s main men in attack, Hulk could be worth a flutter. Having started 10 of the last 14 on the opposite flank and emerged from the bench on a couple of occasions, he seems to have found his form in recent matches, grabbing two goals and a trio of assists in the last three friendlies.

Finally, if Fred struggles for full fitness, back-up option Jo may come into contention – he has scored five times from 12 appearances, with seven of those coming courtesy of the bench.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        The Sky game for the 2006 World Cup was my favourite.

        I liked the rule where players could only be captained once. (for example, if you captained Beckham in Round 1 vs Paraguay, you couldn't captain him again for the rest of the tournament).

            I played it (2010) and euro 2012 - they were ok , 7/10 at least it had a smooth feel and rules were clear , I recall decent prizes at the time.

      Anyway, here's my iTeam:

      Ospina;
      Schär, Rojo, David Luiz;
      Müller, Oscar, de Bruyne, Kagawa, Cuadrado;
      Messi, Ronaldo.

      3-5-2 seems the way to go, forwards are poor value IMO.

    Fred is in good form for Flu after a disastrous season last year for both him (injury wise) and the club (avoided relegation as defending champions due to a dodgy post campaign points deduction for another team). He's scored 2 in 5 league starts, 3 in 3 in the Copa do Brasil and he got 5 in 11 in the State Championships. He was sent off at Gremio yesterday though for two yellows. Depending on price, I'd have him over Neymar

        Clasie is a done deal apparently.

        Van Gaal will want a big name centre back with experience.

        Don't think Strootman will join this window, he won't play until next year, maybe January.

    My scientifically produced methods have worked out the top scoring teams for the group stages.

    Argentina 10
    Spain 10
    Brazil 7
    France 7

    So I suggest loading up on their forwards.

    Brazil and Argentina will contest the final.

          Ecuador are at the World Cup because of their huge home advantage in playing at altitude. They might still do okay in what is one of the weaker groups, but I wouldn't use their qualifying as much of a measure for their success in Brazil.

    Here's my tuppence worth on United and Van Gaal.

    Personally,I don't know much about him managerial-wise, but he seems like the man to put the fear of God back into the United team like Ferguson did.

    I don't buy the Robben rumours. Van Gaal is likely to be there for 3/4 years to bring in and develop young players for whoever is to take over after him. Can't see Robben leaving Bayern this year with the way he's playing for them, not to mention at 30 it wouldn't exactly benefit United in the long-term for the cost.

    I think Alex Song would be an excellent signing, giving his midfield status and his history of linking up, and playing with Van Persie. If Barca really do want rid of him, United could get him for a really nice price. At 26, he's probably in the best of his years with a good future ahead.

    Clearly a left back is needed, with Luke Shaw more than likely going to be snapped up for £27mil based on the intensity of the rumours. Jetro Willems could also be an alternative

    The big question for me, lies around the centre back position. As much as Hummels would fill the void left by Vidic's departure, is it likely he would leave Dortmund (same applied for Reus and Kroos). I think getting Hummels will certainly involve a large sum, with Kagawa included (to help fill the Lewandowski hole at Dortmund for next season). With no European campaign, it may dissuade a lot of big names from joining. However, with no European campaign, United might do a Liverpool and have all their focus on the league.

    Nearly every Dutch player will be linked to United now with the likes of Martins Indi, de Vrij, Maher, and Clasie also likely young targets for Van Gaal to choose from and focus on developing.

      I think he'll do well enough.. should get the players motivated again and all that.
      Not sure on Song.. he's a good, solid player but United need more in midfield.
      I've honestly never though Hummels was that great a defender, though great on the ball. I may be wrong as I haven't seen him play a huge amount, just 15 or so games.
      I think it's fair to say that with Fergie gone, and the reliable old guard players also gone, United really need top tier signings to become a top tier team again. Players like Kroos, Fabregas is what they need.. not Strootman and an ageing Robben.
      Luke Shaw may be the worlds best left back in 3 years or so though 30m is a lot considering that's what they got Rooney for.

    Gael Clichy was only subbed on twice last year, does that make him an option if LB's stay the same and he's 5m? A cheap 2 way rotation would cover when he doesn't play?

    Kolorov, on the other hand was subbed on 10 times.
