Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 3, Day 3

Groups E and F come to their conclusions this evening as the Brazil 2014 World Cup treats us to four more fixtures. Argentina are already through, after winning both their opening matches courtesy of late Lionel Messi strikes, and the South Americans square up to a Nigeria side who require just a draw to join them in the last 16:

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Fernandez, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Higuain, Aguero

Nigeria: Enyeama; Ambrose, Omeruo Yobo, Oshaniwa; Mikel, Onazi; Odemwingie, Babatunde, Musa; Emenike,

Alejandro Sabella names an unchanged XI from the side that edged past Iran last time around. Despite the fact that his side have clinched a place in the last 16, the Argentina boss has resisted the urge to rest and rotate and is clearly affording his first-choice players the chance to step up in performance, after a pair of very unconvincing showings thus far. Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero once again lead the line, then, with Angel Di Maria owners looking for the Real Madrid man to improve his contribution from the centre of the park.

Nigeria – along with Mexico – were one of only two sides to register a clean sheet in both the opening Matchdays. It’s no real surprise, then, to see the Africans remain unchanged, with Peter Odemwingie hoping to replicate his winner against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the previous match as Stephen Keshi’s side attempt to pick up the point which would ensure their progress.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Begovic; Vrsajevic, Sunjic, Spahic, Kolasinac; Hadzic, Besic, Susic, Pjanic; Ibisevic, Dzeko

Iran: Haghighi; Montarezi, Hosseini, Sadeghi, Pooladi; Nekounam, Teymourian; Shojaei, Hajsafi, Dejagah; Ghoochannejad

Bosnia make five changes in their final game of the tournament. In defence, full-backs Avdija Vrsajevic and Sead Kolasinac come in for Mensur Mujdza and SenadLulic, whilst further up the field, Zvjedan Misimovic, Izet Hajrovic and Haris Medunjanin drop out for Anel Hadzic, Tino-Sven Susic and Vedad Ibisevic. Manager Safet Susic looks to have returned to the 4-1-3-2 formation that served his side so well in qualifying, with Ibisevic up front alongside Edin Dzeko.

Iran, meanwhile, are unchanged for the showdown as Carlos Quieroz’ side attempt to overcome the odds and make it through to the knockouts. As the only team in the tournament yet to score a goal, though, they face a tough task to get the better of the Bosnians.

In the later matches, Karim Benzema owners will be desperate for the France striker to continue the form which has harvested three goals and a trio of assists in the opening couple of Matchdays. With his side already through, though, Didier Deschamps certainly has the option of resting key players, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba hoping to return to the starting XI after both were dropped for last week’s 5-2 win over Switzerland. Opponents Ecuador have an in-form frontman of their own as they look for the result that would steer them through – Enner Valencia has also notched three times in the first two games and has netted in six of his last seven international appearances.

Switzerland also have plenty to play for. A win over Honduras, coupled with at least a draw for the French, would seal the progress of Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side as they look to bounce back from their mauling at the hands of Les Bleus, though the Swiss boss has decisions to make up front, after alternating Josip Drmic and Haris Seferovic as the lone forward over the first two games. Fantasy managers will be hoping raiding left-back Ricardo Rodriguez can replicate his pair of assists in Matchday 1, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka offer the main threat in the attacking midfield three.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I want to change my formation from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3. i've VALBUENA, DI Maria, Moutinho and Cuadrado in midfield and i want to substitute valbuena. How can i do that?

To be safe, remove Valbuena first, then change formation. The players who have played will still remain.

Click the arrow on Valbuena and confirm, then switch to 4-3-3, then select the defender you want to bring in...

Wouldn't Belgium want to still top the group else they face Germany? They are not playing Vert, and Kompany anyway, so wondering whether they will play Alderweireld?

Its complete luck tbh, 1 player left to play for Valbuena. Options between Alderweireld, Lukaku, and Bougherra, but am not going to wait till 3.30 a.m. for sure. So need to decide now. Shocked at overall rank of 227. For some players, that I have as subs, I don't even know which country they are from, unless I look at the flag.

Was leaning towards Alder, as defenders usually do really well in this game.

I reckon Gilbo will have 1, maybe 2 to play, and you're 11 ahead, so just play who you think will score the most points...

Apparently Alderweireld might get rested... Lukaku is shit, so I think you should consider Bougherra, they have all to play for too...

I've added another tab in the spreadsheet with all the scores. Then I made all the cells on the MD3 tab as a lookup function so all you have to do is update the scores on their and it updates everyone on the MD3 tab.

Right now I've just been copy and pasting everyone from all the leagues into excel and sorting but I'm gonna see if Pratik/Smarty Pants has an easier way of copying all the scores.

Btw you can access all the leagues from here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Uab9N_e7IoTc2YAfpqH9Zh9zx-3JquTfAKH7TU9d9fY/edit#gid=2018608904

    T-minus 24hrs & 27mins until I can rid myself of Aguero & his grand total of 10pts...

I really & truly thought his game was perfectly suited for the McD's scoring.

Even if he didn't get a goal himself, I thought he was surely going to grab points through his playmaking ability.

Alas, it was not to be... Guess I'll just have to wait till the FPL season begins before I get sucked back in.

not really, the other probable quarters all look very hard to pick...

I think a good strategy is getting costa rican, greek, dutch and then maybe german/belgian/french defenders....

if you wanna be cheeky maybe double up on costa rica and netherlands at the back

I think I may go ahead and do the double up. Maybe:
        Navas (Karnezis)
Blind -- de Vrij -- Duarte -- (Marquez) -- (Layun)
just to cover my bases in case of a Netherlands loss? A transfer is necessary if Costa Rica loses, but that's probably OK.

Aike. Have they updated the rankings in FOX yet? I'm not sure.

I think I'm either 29th or 13th in FOX. Not sure.

Nice rank in McDs! I'm way off there, on about 13k 😆

With clean sheets about as likely as after curry night in an old people's home, I'm going cheap for defence in Fox for the next round.

Key is finding players you think will make it through to the QF, as I'd like to play my WC in the SF.

    Thinking.... Costa Rica/Mexico (keepers)
    Colombia Greece France Dutch

    Thoughts..?

Not sure, but if i want players like JRod Robben Mueller Benzema Messi Neymar I'll need to take some money from the backline.

Defences like Brazil Germany Argentina aren't solid but pricey...

although things may get more cagey in the KO stages, which could lead to less goals and more cleanies....

It's a tough question. My tentative plan is the following:
            Navas (Karnezis)
Blind -- de Vrij -- Duarte -- (Marquez) -- (Layun)
With the double up on both Mexico and Holland, it's a tough call between de Vrij and Marquez. But with just one of each, Blind gets the nod from me without too much hesitation. Holland score lots of goals.

You and your crew (you do have a crew, right?) have done an awesome job organizing, managing and holding the FFSWC tournament together. I'm sure others made significant contributions too, but given the shambolic state of the McD game for most of the last 2 weeks, being at the center of it all must have been nightmarish. Great work.

Can anyone confirm that Benzema will be fasting? Not all Muslims, even pretty devout ones, do this if they have important matches to play. I share an office with an Iranian, and he was telling me that the Iranians would have made an exception for an extenuating circumstance. Sunni's are generally more strict about it I think, but still, practices vary.

In Brazil, fasting would equate to about 13-and-a-half hours without food or liquids.

Team doctors have designed special programs to keep fasting players hydrated during games.

France players Karim Benzema, Mamadou Sakho, Bacary Sagna and Moussa Sissoko, Belgium’s Marouane Fellaini and Moussa Dembele, Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri and Germany's Mesut Ozil are all practising Muslims.

Some may have an alternate definition of daytime, sorta like Jews (two stars or whatever)? In any case, surely none of us have fantasy football down to such a science that our decision on whether to get German defense versus the Algerians hinges on the exact length of the day.

        OZIL SAYS CANNOT FAST

All healthy adult Muslims are expected to observe the month-long fast, although exceptions can be made and the fast postponed.

One player who has made up his mind is Germany's Mesut Ozil.

"Ramadan starts on Saturday, but I will not take part because I am working," he told a press conference on Wednesday.

Stick with Benzemas 4 or bring in Mesbah or Lukaku even if starting in bench?

After falling from 1st to 59th in Fox over the last few days I'm gonna try something different to make my way back up the rankings.

Since everyone gets unlimited transfers this week, all of the teams are going to be similar and a front 8 template has already formed (JRod, Robben, Muller, Cuadrado/Oscar, Cheap mid, Neymar, Messi, Benzema).

So, the real differentials will come in defence. My latest idea involves a German treble up defensively (surely they'll keep a CS against Russia/Algeria?) and then using my wildcard the week after. Is anyone else doing something different from the majority as an attempt to rise up the rankings? After all, if it doesn't work out, you've still got a WC to get you out of the mess. 😉

yeah I think whatever way you go, double/triple ups may be the way to go....costa rica, germany and netherlands look like the teams to target

Quality differential plan. I think I'll be doubling up on Netherlands defense. I also plan to start with 5 decent mids (Valbuena and Cuadrado), playing Valbuena for the round of 16. Honestly though, I'm not really doing either because they're differentials. I'd be happy to finish where I am right now (67).

Yeah, Netherlands defence looks good for the next two rounds. I had 5 good mids for the group stages and ended up benching Cuadrado when he got 11 points. The WC is quite a lottery and there won't be rotation so I think having a cheaper mid will benefit your squad overall.

I think I might have to go for something like it, I've slipped away dramatically after going without Messi and selling JRod for a -3... 🙁
