Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Snodgrass

Having snapped up Jake Livermore from Tottenham last month, Steve Bruce continued to strengthen Hull City’s midfield by acquiring Robert Snodgrass from Norwich City. The 26-year-old arrives at the KC Stadium on a three-year contract in a deal believed to be in the region of £7m and makes his way back to the Premier League less than two months after dropping down into the Championship with the relegated Canaries:

Talking to the Hull official website upon completion of the deal, the Scot was clearly relieved to be handed a second opportunity in the English top-flight as the Tigers attempt to improve upon last term’s 16th place finish:

“After speaking to the owners and the manager, I was desperate to come here. I’m ready for a new chapter and I’m delighted that it’s going to come with Hull City. Having had two years of playing in the Premier League, it is where I want to be. Every player will tell you that they want to play in the top flight and I’m delighted that I can continue to do that.”

The History

Born and bred in Glasgow, Snodgrass displayed a single-mindedness as a youngster by turning down an apprenticeship at boyhood club Celtic and a trial with Barcelona to sign for Livingston instead. Handed his debut in 2004-05, he proceeded to score six goals in 42 appearances over two Scottish Premier League seasons before his club were relegated to Division One. Snodgrass played six times before picking up a metatarsal injury and, upon recovering, dropped down a division to help his rehabilitation, notching on five occasions in 12 games for Stirling Albion.

The following season saw the Scot establish himself as a key player for Livingston and, after netting nine times in 31 matches, was snapped up by Leeds ahead of 2008-09. In his first two seasons at Elland Club, Snodgrass’ impact helped the club climb out of League One into the Championship by serving up 16 goals and 12 assists in 86 appearances. Having delivered six goals and eight assists in his first year in the Championship, Snodgrass stepped up another level and delivered 13 goals and 15 assists in 43 appearances over 2011-12, winning the Player of the Year awards from both his team-mates and the club’s fans.

With many Premier League suitors circling, Snodgrass opted to sign for Norwich in July 2012.The Scot made his way onto Fantasy managers’ radars after serving up six goals and eight assists in his first season in the English top-flight but a total of six strikes and two assists in 2013-14 wasn’t enough to prevent the Canaries from dropping into the Championship. At international level, Snodgrass made his debut for Scotland back in 2011 and has gone on to fire three goals in 16 appearances.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Snodgrass’ arrival will give Bruce’s side a much-needed boost in creativity for the season ahead, both domestically and in the Europa League. Hull scored just 38 times in 2013-14 – the fourth worst record in the Premier League – and their manager will be more than aware that, if they are to avoid the drop this time around, improvements in the final third are essential.

Although Snodgrass mustered just two assists last term, the stats show that his frequency of key passes actually quickened in his second year with Norwich. In 2012/13, he managed 66 key passes from 3,182 minutes – an average of 48.2 minutes per chance created – compared to 67 key passes (the same number as Steven Gerrard, for example) over 2,704 minutes last term, or an average of 40.4 minutes. Given that Tom Huddlestone was the most impressive Hull midfielder with an average of 56.8 minutes per key pass, it’s obvious that Snodgrass’ installation is clearly a step in the right direction and could turn out to be a masterstroke as Bruce looks to provide more ammunition for front two Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic.

Likely to be handed a major share of corners and set-pieces, the Scot’s dead-ball ability could bring him back onto our Fantasy radars – providing he remains reasonably priced across the Fantasy games. A of 6cost.2 in the recently-released Sky Sports game certainly bodes well for Fantasy managers looking to invest in the former Norwich playmaker and if he comes in around the 6.0 or 6.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his underlying stats certainly indicate he’s likely to prove the best route into Bruce’s midfield.

In terms of position, Snodgrass offers the Tigers options right across the attacking midfield areas. A reprisal of his right wing role for Leeds and Norwich could be on the cards and with a fit-again Robbie Brady on the opposite flank, Bruce’s options out wide will take a turn for the better. Tactically, the Hull boss rolled out a three-man backline on a number of occasions last term, with Ahmed Elmohamady as right wing-back, but the Egyptian is perhaps more likely to be utilised as a right-back in a four-man defence in order to accommodate Snodgrass further up the pitch.

After mustering just one win and a single draw across the last eight league fixtures of 2013/14, the release of next term’s Premier League fixture list affords Bruce’s side reason for early optimism. Over the first five Gameweeks of the new campaign, Hull square up to QPR, Stoke, Villa, West Ham and Newcastle – a run of matches which could allow the Tigers the chance of a quick start and, if his new team-mates can tuck away the numerous opportunities he will surely provide, bring Snodgrass back into our Fantasy plans once again.

Short term difficulty though, Origi looks likely to be loaned back to Lille if it goes through, and Markovic just isn't yet good enough to fill Suarez' boots goal wise.

I understand that, we are looking for a wide forward anyway, but as of right now we've only been interested in wide forwards, as such why pay 25m for a project, Markovic is clearly the guy we're chasing and I doubt we'll go for another high profile forward now, its up to Sturridge and Lambo for that.

I'm not as convinced. Both with undeniable talent but big money to spend on youngsters and Origi is certainly not ready for the PL imo. Also means the Shaqiri deal is off.

Options I suppose, its a poor time to buy, either ridiculously overpriced, would never want to move to certain clubs and are looking for elite moves or they just aren't good enough.

I think my problem is that I only really see Lallana and Lambert as non risky buys. The rest, it's really gambling on talented youth stepping up and while that's all well and good, they need to sign one or two more properly established players. Developing younger lads is a big component but it's not the only one. Just don't want to see them making mistakes.

It puts us under real risk I feel, top four would have been difficult to consolidate anyway, its a poor market, I think that's why recently Liverpool have been desperately trying to attract Sanchez.

I think he'll do well, but he is injury prone, hopefully they'll tighten up defensively and the additions will keep them up there, but they need a goalscorer in there, especially since it looks like the others are interested in players who are clearly a different class.

Would be very interesting to see how the usual suspects line up during the initial stages of the league.

City won't have changed much, I assume.

Liverpool will have a lot more emphasis on wing play. Sterling will probably start behind Sturridge. An all English front 4 could be on the cards here

Chelsea will have a striker and Cesc and Courtois at the back. 3 very nice imports into the PL

Perhaps the biggest anticipation would be how United line up. Looking forward to watching Herrera play. Don't really think Vidal would be coming to United.

And Arsenal are favs to land Sanchez. Hopefully somebody like a Loic Remy would sign for them too. Would make it so much competitive.

In other words, I hope the PL gains better players. Its losing out on the world's best striker but hopefully the incoming quality will be better than the outgoing.

I think its the fact that there aren't as many 'Elite' clubs vying for the top spots in other leagues, often other league's can be competitive but those teams usually end up selling. I'd say its easy being Barca, Real, PSG, Monaco, or BM (though the Bundesliga is very competitive).

City - I agree but there may be some changes initially while the world cup players catch up on pre-season.

Liverpool - I wouldn't be surprised to see Coutinho line up in the no10 but I also think they may go for a more cautious approach in an attempt to concede less goals since they are unlikely to score as many next season. If they go for the more cautious approach with 4-3-3 and a combination of Gerro, Hendo and one of Allen or Lucas then it will obviously be cout and sterling on the wings.

Chelsea - I wouldn't be surprised to see the 4-2-3-1 dispensed with now for JM old favourite 4-3-3 with Cesc taking up the Lamps/Deco role of the attacking midfielder. It would leave Oscar out in the cold a bit as I don't think he is great on the wing but with Salah, Hazard, Willian, Ramires, Shurrle. Chelsea could also have the benefit of Van Ginkel being fit adding the the options in the central midfield area.

Utd - The key thing with Utd is how quickly they will adapt to the new managers tactics. It probably isn't helping that the premier league starts only 5 weeks after the world cup final which doesn't give much time for LVG to implement his ideas.

Arsenal - Could be real dark horses this year with Ozil fully fit after a pre-season and Ramsey possibly pushing on as well as one or two additions.

I agree the loss of Suarez is a big disappointment for the EPL. It is such a pity that there isn't a level playing field accross Europe in the way tv money is distributed as if this was the case the top clubs in the EPL would be able to retain the top talent in the world.
What Uefa mean by financial fair play is just a cover up to protect the brands of the top clubs in the other European leagues from new money clubs in the EPL and elsewhere.

Couldn't agree more on the last point, I think Utd could struggle but their fixtures are favourable, but LVG is notorious for falling out for everyone and anyone. I can see Liverpool being better defensively, perhaps a little reserved but they'll aim to retain possession high up the pitch still, I'd say they'll still be a great attacking side.

Yeah I know. But could one for in further up field or left back?

Clyne and chambers played 20 minute both on pitch v united in last game (I think clyne played right wing).

Also clyne played 2 games last steaks at left back.

Just food for thought. Esp if they don't sign another full back.

I feel a lot of sympathy for Neymar but Noone for Brazil. They went out to play filthy football and get away with dodgy tackles, can't expect Colombia not to do the same. Sorry it happened to Neymar but there's a sense of karma about it.

More karma from a view that they went out to be cynical and cause harm and wind up losing their best player due to similar actions. As I say, it's absolutely nothing to do with Neymar in that sense, I feel awful sorry for him.

LvG's system allows the front 3 to have the freedom to attack, as there are two central mids, 2 wing backs, and 3 CBs that can provide cover. Hence why Robben and RVP have been so effective in the WC.

That can be achieved without a 3-4-3, seems a bit reserved playing with 5 defenders effectively, and with 2 holding players most likely.

Pure guesswork imo and I seriously doubt they will have time to teach a whole new defensive system before the start of the season. I think a variation on 4-3-3 will be more likely as at least it incorporates a back four which all of the players at the club are comfortable with. I think the most interesting thing will be how he accommodates RVP and Rooney or if he drops one of them. Interesting times for utd fans.

              So when attacking..

              -----------------RVP
              Shaw Rooney Mata Rafael
              ------------Herrera
              -----------------Carrick
              --------------CB CB CB
              -------------------DDG

Seem's rather congested through the middle, and it's asking a lot of Shaw and Rafael.

I really think LvG has to choose between Rooney and Mata, rather than shoehorning both in.

I don't know, I'm not a professional manager. I can just see LvG finding a solution. He has a lot of faith in his system, and it is working with the Netherlands. There's no reason it won't work at United imo.
