World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 7, Day 1

Holland clinch third place in the 2014 World Cup after a comfortable 3-0 win over hosts Brazil. Robin Van Persie nets his fourth goal of the tournament, whilst Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum also find the net in Louis Van Gaal’s final match in charge:

Van Persie Back in the Goals
Despite a series of poor displays over the knockout stages, the United striker kept his role in the starting XI last night. Louis Van Gaal made just two changes to his line-up, bringing in Jordy Clasie and Jonathan de Guzman for Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong in the centre of the park, with Georginio Wijnaldum tucking in behind Van Persie and Arjen Robben up top.

Having failed to net since Matchday 2, the United man quickly rediscovered his scoring touch against the beleaguered hosts. An early foul on Arjen Robben allowed Van Persie the chance to fire home an excellent spot-kick and take his tally to four for the tournament – level with Lionel Messi and Neymar and eclipsing Robben’s total of three for the Dutch. Elsewhere amongst the attackers, Sneijder’s absence proved beneficial to Wijnaldum. Previously utilised as part of the central midfield four, a move to a more advanced role allowed the PSV man to grab his first goal of the campaign in the latter stages of the match and afford us a decent differential for last night’s encounter.

Blind Delivers Again
Handed a role on the left of the midfield four, the versatile Ajax man served up the points at both ends of the pitch last night to justify our Fantasy faith. Blind’s first-half strike took his attacking returns to a goal and three assists over seven appearances, whilst his 70th-minute withdrawal still afforded owners a fourth clean sheet of the campaign – last night’s result means Holland conceded just a single goal in their final five fixtures of Van Gaal’s tenure, providing Fantasy managers with points aplenty over the tournament.

Brazil End With a Whimper
Thiago Silva’s return from suspension made little difference as the demoralised hosts were taken apart again. Phil Scolari made six changes from the side that were beaten 7-1 by Germany but the Brazil defence once again let down its Fantasy owners – the 3-0 win means they managed a single clean sheet over seven matches and conceded an incredible 14 goals. The likes of Willian, Ramires and Jo were handed starts further up the pitch but made little impact and, since losing Neymar to injury, Brazil have managed a single goal in two matches in a dire end to the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Stefan de Vrij was top performer for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with an impressive 13, followed by Jordy Clasie (five) and Daley Blind (four). For Brazil, the back-four were the main men – Thiago Silva managed six, with David Luiz on five and Maxwell and Maicon next in line on three apiece.

Alright guys, we've made it to the last day! Defending a lead in my ML, not too sure what it is atm as me and my friend in second have different amounts of players played this round. So I have a LOT of questions and need help with. What did Silva get last night? He was his capatain (which he'll take off i'm sure). I myself had Van Persie who got a admirable 10 (so 20 as captain) stick or twist? Cillisen 10 stick or twist to Neuer?

    Heres my team atm.

    Cillissen Neur x
De Vrij, Demi, Rojo, Boateng, Howdes x x
Willian, Clasie, Mash, Kroos and Lahm x x x
RVP, Messi and Muller x x

Obvs will take out Willian and Classie for Kroos and Lahm leaving me with 5-3-2. Will definitley want to play Muller so that means taking out a defender. I'm leaning towards Rojo.

    So to conclude...

    Silva points?
RVP stick or twist as captain?
    Cillisen or Neur?
Lose one of Demi, Rojo, Boateng, Howdes, Messi and Muller.

Cheers ya'll, been a big help this tourney.

Cheers for the reply, leaning towards the same however I know my rival also has Kroos and Muller (Both playing) so if I stick the same players on, I can't lose 😆

    Cilessen (10)
Vlaar (11) De Vrij (13) Rojo Hummels
Willian (5) Wijnaldum (11) Lahm Kroos
    Robben (3X2) Messi

    Bench: Boateng, Garay, Mascherano, Muller

    Mascherano in for Willian
    Mueller in for Robben

Should I leave Garay and Boateng on the bench? Or what should I do with them?

    A. Ramsey
    B. Walcott
    C. Hazard
    D. Fabregas

Maybe. It is doable imo and still have a Chelsea defender.

I may go with Rooney though if LvG uses the Dutch formation pre-season. I think LvG will play him high up the pitch with RVP.

Van Persie's starting to deteriorate as well imo.

Suspect you've underpriced a few, we all do at this time of year. Cahill, Trippier, Walcott, Aguero, Long could all be higher I reckon. Cahill is definite.

So bet365 offer 100% bonus up to £200.

I put £200 in and now it shows £400 in my account. I need to "play through" 3 times in order to claim it. Does this mean I need to bet £1200 in order to claim.

If so, could I just bet say £200 on germany to win and £200 on argentina to win (or similar bet) 3 times? And then cash out?

  18. Fixture Rotation Analysis
    Jimjam

    Morning all,

Just got bought my season membership and had a play with the interactive ticker. I thought I'd share some rotation analysis I just threw together.

I noticed a lot of rotation analysis revolves around home/away - I thought I'd look purely at difficult fixtures, i.e. when one team has a bad fixture, who has a corresponding good fixture?

    METHODOLOGY

Very crude. I took the season ticker for the first 10 gameweeks of the season, and set it to 'Clean Sheets' to look at defensive fixture difficulty.

I assigned a numerical grade to each fixture, from 1-5. So, on the season ticker, a dark blue/very easy fixture is 1; a light blue/easy fixture is 2; a grey/neutral fixture is 3; a light red/difficult fixture is 4, and a dark red/very difficult fixture is 5.

For each team, for every fixture ranked 3 or higher, I looked for teams with a corresponding fixture ranked 1 or 2. I then tallied which other teams rotated best with that particular team.

At some point I will cross-refer this with home/away rotation, but have not yet done so.

    All feedback welcome!

    RESULTS

I prefer this method. I've only had a quick look myself but I also noticed that Everton and Swansea rotate very well in terms of fixture difficulty (perfectly I'd say), but this isn't picked up on with home/away rotation.

Looks like you've uncovered a few more gems here. Good work!

How many games out of the total number of bad/neutral games that team rotates for.

So for example, Arsenal have 4 bad/neutral games in the first 10. Crystal Palace and Stoke rotate for all 4, hence the (4).

Eh? Isn't it possibly the same thing? Benching Kroos would mean you are keeping Clasie!?

Captaincy depends on whether you are chasing or defending a lead.

        Haha .. that's right so it's bench Clasie or Kroos ? 😀

I am Defending a lead with 6/7 players to play and the chasing guy 8/9 players and the gap is 35 Pts

Got 2 Argentina defenders and 2 German defenders (Rojo, Demi, Hummels, Boateng). I also have Messi. But can only play 3 defenders.

Which 3 defenders would you pick? As I have Messi, I'm swaying towards 2 Argentinians...
