Scout Scribbles – The Friendlies Highlights So Far

With the pre-season friendly schedules starting to pick up, we cast an eye over the highlights so far this morning. At this point, it’s all about building up fitness and the first few fixtures have seen most players handed 45 minutes apiece over each game as managers utilise the depths of their first-team squads. Whilst it’s impossible to gauge any conclusions in terms of tactics and team selections from the matches played out, it’s clear that a handful of players have quickly found their form:

Bent Bags a Brace for Villa
With both Christian Benteke and Libor Kozak still sidelined by injury, the forgotten forward served a timely reminder of his talents by scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Mansfield Town. Gary Gardner was also among the goals whilst Andreas Weimann chipped in with a pair of assists as the midlands outfit got their pre-season off to a positive start. Lambert handed summer signings Joe Cole and Kieran Richardson their debuts, whilst the likes of Bent and Alan Hutton also came into contention after both were farmed out on loan in the season gone by. In addition, the game also saw Charles N’Zogbia and Jores Okore finally return from long-term injury after both spent months on the sidelines in the previous campaign. Post-match, Lambert inisisted that Bent was very much part of his plans for the season ahead, though with six tough fixtures in the first eight Gameweeks, Villa’s players will be in few initial Fantasy squads.

Clarets Forwards Find the Net
Burnley opened their summer schedule with an 8-0 win over Austrian fifth division side Grossklein yesterday. Surprisingly, last season’s top scorer Danny Ings failed to find the net –instead, fellow strikers Ashley Barnes and debutants Marvin Sordell and Lukas Jutkiewicz all scored twice in the rout, whilst budget midfielder Scott Arfield served a reminder of the form which saw him net eight times last term by also getting on the scoresheet.

Terry in the Goals for Blues
The Chelsea skipper has wasted no time in finding his form over the last week. Terry has played 45 minutes on two occasions and has already scored three times for Jose Mourinho’s side – first of all netting in an easy 5-0 win over Wycombe before emerging from the bench again to notch twice in a 3-2 comeback win over Wimbledon at the weekend. With most of his squad still resting after World Cup duties, the Blues boss has taken the chance to hand many youngsters a chance to impress – Izzy Brown grabbed twice against Wycombe – though first-team squad members Branislav Ivanovic and Mohamed Salah have also opened their accounts with a goal apiece so far.

Dobbie Instrumental as Palace Run Riot
Austrian outfit GAK Graz were humbled in front of their own fans by a rampant Palace last midweek. The Eagles won by an eye-catching margin of 13-1, with Stephen Dobbie the star man after climbing off the bench to produce four goals and three assists against a tiring backline. Jonny Williams and Glenn Murray both bagged braces in the rout but bearing in mind their opponents currently sit in Austria’s seven division, it’s best not to look too much into this result.

Peterson Impresses for Reds
Liverpool followed up a 2-1 defeat against Brondby with a weekend triumph over Preston. Saturday’s 2-1 victory saw summer signings Rickie Lambert and Emre Can handed their debuts (the latter was withdrawn as a precautionary measure due to a minor calf problem) though the standout performers so far for the Merseysiders have been a couple of youngsters. Jordan Ibe has assisted all three of Liverpool’s goals over the two games, whilst Kristoffer Peterson has scored in both matches. The Preston match saw Rodgers welcome back Jose Enrique from a long-term knee problem, with the Spaniard handed a brief second-half run-out.

De Jong Nets in Magpies Loss
Handed the skipper’s armband for Newcastle’s trip to Oldham, the Dutchman was quick to make his mark for Alan Pardew’s side. Although the Tyneside team fell to a 2-1 defeat, they’ll be buoyed with De Jong’s immediate impact – fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward in a 4-2-3-1, he needed just 14 minutes to lash home a long-range effort to endear himself to Magpies fans. It’s worth noting that De Jong also seems to be on direct free-kicks for the Tyneside team, strengthening his chances of replicating the kind of form that saw him score 10+ goals in four of his last five seasons in the Dutch top-flight.

Pelle at the Double
After opening their summer schedule with a 4-0 win over Dutch lower league side EHC Hoensbroek, Ronald Koeman’s men served up a 6-0 victory against Belgian minnows Sporting Hasselt late last week. Summer signing Graziano Pelle was quick to demonstrate the form that saw him score 55 goals in 66 appearances for Feyenoord over the last two year by notching twice in a 45-minute debut run-out, whilst fellow new boy Dusan Tadic looks to be first-choice for dead-ball situations after serving up 10+ assists in each of his last four seasons in the Dutch top-flight. Callum Chambers – eyed up by some Fantasy managers due to a kind starting price across the games – has also been in the goals to stake a claim for a regular role at the back.

Fletcher Nets Twice for Black Cats
Gus Poyet named a different starting XI for both halves of Saturday’s 5-1 win over Darlington as Sunderland got their pre-season underway. This means we are yet to be given an inkling over the likely Sunderland number one, after Vito Mannone and Costel Pantilimon each managed 45 minutes between the sticks, whilst up front, the Black Cats boss opted for the lone forward system that served his side so well at the end of last term. Steven Fletcher started the match and grabbed a double, though replacement Connor Wickham also found the net to keep himself in consideration, while Emmanuele Giaccherini and new boy Jordi Gomez grabbed a goal apiece from midfield in a comfortable run-out.

McElroy's a gobshite. Its one thing following rules but bring rude about it is a different story. No one talks about the poor young fella he got sacked from behind the bar in Fota Resort for messing with him and asking for ID

That's it really. He came up to the bar and the kid asked him for ID, jokingly. It wasn't a dig at his height or anything just asking a famous person for id but McIlroy the insecure shit took offence and went to the supervisor. Young fella was sacked there and then. I know a couple of people who work out there and all said it was an innocent joke. What kinda pr**k does that like.

What are peoples opinions on Andy Carroll? Not just fantasy but in real life? I am a West Ham fan but never really wanted him to begin with. He had a great 6 month spell at Newcastle then after his move to Liverpool he never seemed the same.

He seems a marmite character. People either really rate him and think he is a handful for defenders or they think he is a complete donkey.

Its not news mate its just Aguero... he was struggling at the end of last season and then he missed a few games of the World Cup through injury

Couple that with the fact he gets injured 3 to 4 times a season and he is always going to be an injury worry

As it stands, I think that RVP is a must have over Rooney, even with the 2.0 price difference. The reasons being:

      1. It looks increasingly likely that RVP will be handed the captaincy, whereas van Gaal has openly said that Rooney won't get by on reputation alone in his side. He was reluctant to comment on Rooney in general in his presser, this is revealing IMO. RVP is simply a more nailed on option.

      2. He will always play in a more advanced role that Rooney.

      3. I don't think the special relationship between van Gaal and RVP can be understated, I'm certain RVP will flourish in a van Gaal setup

      Do people agree?

Maybe, I just don't think he is as nailed on. I think van Gaal will drop him in a flash if he doesn't perform. I think he'd be less likely to do that with RVP. I'm sure he'll start the first games, I just think he's on a lot thinner ice with van Gaal

I don't think Van Gaal will put with any nonsense. It will be between Rooney and Mata to play behind RVP and it will be close. If Mata is prefered, Rooney will probably have to play wide and if he sulks about it he will be benched and then sold.

Newcastle hoping to add defender Eric Dier to their ranks though unwilling to pay £5m to Sporting Lisbon.

Micah Richards is also apparently keen to go out on loan to them (or Liverpool or Tottenham) if they don't lower their asking price of 7m for him, which he believes is putting suitors off buying him.

Maybe the Toon might have a defense this year aswell 😀

Think he's not had a great season but quite a mature, composed player who seems to me that he wouldn't take too long to adapt. Would be interested to hear some more though. Got a link?

He had a pneumothorax last season which sidelined him for a long time. When he finally came back he got a hamstring injury soon after. He's not normally injury prone, but last year he was recovering pretty much all the time.

Serie A - Arsenal 'to submit Balotelli bid'

The Gunners were reported over the weekend as intent on launching a €20m (£15.8m) bid for the Italy international, who has been linked with a move away from San Siro all summer.

Despite Adriano Galliani denying that any offer had come in for the forward, the Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that his potential sale was one of the items of discussion at an evening meeting with Silvio Berlusconi, Barbara Berlusconi and Pippo Inzaghi.

        Might be the Sun but...

"Up front, we don't need any more," Wenger said, according to The Sun. "We need a keeper and then it depends how our midfielders get through without injuries until the season. Maybe at centre-back we'll bring one in."

Thought I’d throw together my views on the top picks for Tottenham this season in Pochettino’s first season in charge. Let me know if you agree/disagree!

      GK: Lloris £5.5m
Obvious one to start with. Even if the rumours of Vorm joining from Swansea alongside Davies are true, this will do nothing to dent Lloris’ Premier League game time. Last season’s 5th top scoring keeper could fare even better if the early season defensive resilience of Pochettino’s Southampton last season carries over to the Lane.

      DF: Davies £5.0m
Obviously this deal is not yet finalised but all reports seem to suggest it will be completed soon. With the other two guaranteed starters (Vertonghen and Walker) both priced at £6.0m it would seem obvious to save £1.0m and go with Davies. Luke Shaw was given plenty of attacking freedom last year under Pochettino, and one would assume he will give Davies a similar level of freedom to allow him to improve on his 2013/14 tally of 2 goals and 1 assist.

MF: Eriksen £8.0m. (Differential: Paulinho £7.0m)
With such a large selection of midfielders on offer, only Eriksen stands out in terms of quality and guaranteed starts. In the second half of last season he proved to be Spurs’ most dangerous attacking threat from both open-play and deal ball situations. The most obvious comparison to Pochettino’s Southampton side is Lallana, who managed to accumulate 178 points cutting in from the left. A quick mention also to Paulinho whose stats from last season suggest he should have returned a far greater goal tally. A gamble to start with, it is certainly worth monitoring whether he can begin to reproduce the attacking threat that made him a leading member of Brazil’s 2013 Confederations Cup victory.

ST: Soldado £8.0m (Differential: Kane £5.0m)
I think every Tottenham fan is hoping for a new striking addition this summer (Lukaku and Bony have been linked), but of the current crop I would suggest Soldado will start. The high energy pressing style Pochettino brings will not suit Adebayor, and despite Soldado’s lack of goals his energy levels last season were admirable. Soldado is also first choice penalty taker, and he’s already tallied one in pre-season. Harry Kane got on the scoresheet 3 times towards the end of last season, and may convince Pochettino to go with him ahead of £26million man Soldado if he performs well in the remaining pre-season fixtures.

True. I highly doubt anyone will go near him but if he can get anywhere near his Valencia form he could be a decent pick. Big 'if' though!

One thing I will say about Paulinho is his stats lie. Plenty of shots but all speculative from 40 yards that hit row Z. The rest seem pretty decent bar Soldado. not gonna touch him with a barge pole lol

You'd be surprised, as members will be able to see Paulinho was joint 2nd for midfielders in shots inside box and top for big chances. Regarding Soldado, totally agree! But I had to pick someone!

He'll start, I've no doubt about that. But he's the same price as Eriksen, and it would take a very brave/stupid man to pick Lamela (1 PL assist, 0 goals) over Eriksen (9 assists, 7 goals).

According to reports on Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, United are set to table an offer of over £17m for Daley Blind, with Van Gaal looking to strengthen his defensive options, particularly given Patrice Evra’s move to Juventus could be completed in the next 48 hours.
