Projections & Rate My Team Are Live

The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area earlier this week. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may remember as a guest on the ScoutCast.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies recorded last year with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections at least every other day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate my Team was used extensively by last season’s Fantasy Premier League winner, Tom Fenley. Next week he’ll be posting a two-part article guiding you on how he set about using the tool and other members’ area features to help him over his triumphant season.

Memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

reckon villa will be ok - a lot will depend on bentekkers though. Guzan and Vlaar ar both ok but their midfield is terrible, Charles insomnia and Joe Cole is not the way to go. Would love to see qpr and 'arry go straight back down but I think they have the resources to add to their squad in ways some other teams dont.

I don't think they'll be anywhere near relegated.

They have loads of time to make some shrewd buys... they're taking Arsenal and Liverpool to the cleaners, and as others will mention, they have lots of talent in their academy.

I'd love to hear the behind the scenes boardroom drama that's happening. Must be quite a story.

Redknapp will make QPR an iron dome. I believe in Rio. My big concern is about Vaz Te but I don't want to downgrade my strong 11 for a 3rd striker that I won't even use.

As I said on the previous page - I agree with the use of a 4.5 striker. But ONLY if the XI is strong, and at least 2 of your subs are nailed on.

I'm not sure that this fits either criteria as it currently stands.

With Krul and Elliot as my keepers, is it best to start Elliot every week?

Thinking that the most likely reason Elliot would play is if Krul gets a red card, so by starting Elliot id avoid losing those points, and have the opportunity for a penalty save?

And also equal chance of an injury before 30 mins and a cleanie in last 60 for elliot. Although you could say goals are more likely in last 30 mins compared to the first 30.

id be worried about bojan, not sure if he will settle, also doubts about Wisdoms playing time. Tadic is going into a new team, a new country and an unsettled team, with so many of last years team gone. really think you need 2 playing keepers, remember when hart got dropped last season.
On the plus side Shaw should be fine,(but you're doubling on Utd defence), I like wanyama as opposed to albrighton and think Dzeko will do very well with Negredo injured and Aguero so fragile.

When you put an RMT in do you pay much attention to advice or are you looking to validate your own ideas? TBH I usually just go with what I planned in the first place unless they have a good argument. But different teams are what makes this game interesting isn't it?

Looking for validation is pointless but I agree lots of people like to stroke their ego and when you give them constructive criticism they jump down your throat.

The best way is to show your team, highlight the areas you want to improve and your ideas so far. Also note who you're not gonna budge from the team, cos likely if you don't people will just tell you to ditch your punts.

Can get quite frustrating for the poster too. People may jump on one area which you were happy with and you'll be left with no more info about the ares you were trying to improve.

I really dont like when some people just tell people to change their whole team simply because it's different. If someone has Torres, fair enough, tell him pick Rooney or Dzeko or whoever, but mostly they dont give advice or reasons, they just tell people to change to the template player without any just reason.

Personally don't understand how someone can give more weight to someone else's ideas than their own...

I don't really ask for RMTs, I usually focus on one question that is troubling me at that point and ask for views on that... more helpful that way...

Agreed but sometimes it helps to see the team as a whole, as there may not be an individual problem but collectively, the team doesnt look great

I want the criticism from a RMT, and I make sure to post RMTs only in the DZ because I tend to know reputations better, and can take seriously someone like OP, and other mainstays.

I find that reading other peoples' RMTs is helpful enough to me, and thus I don't really feel the need to post my own, since we all have a similar group of players and 100m to pick them...

Reading rmts also helps me keep on top of the trends. Sometimes a players name starts appearing and im like "who is that random", google them and it turns out to be a brazilian superstar striker who scored 48 goals last season and has been assigned as a 4.5m defender, or something similar

Not that i think i have ever posted a straight out rmt but i think the most value is when someone points out some information about one of your players that you did not know
E.g. Aguero lost his leg in a freak gardening accident last week, you may want to consider sturridge

I like to hear the opinion of others, as a 3rd party may have a switch or two that you hadn't previously considered. Although I wouldn't post my team if I didn't like it first myself, and there are some points on which I won't be persuaded.

And in some circumstances, whether the team is well received or not, the response can help me validate certain decisions I have made. If there is disagreement over a particular decision, in the process of disagreeing, I am justifying, by process of logical reasoning, that that choice has a highee chance of success than the suggested alternative.

I think RMT's are great for people new to the game who don't quite get it. Like the guy earlier who believed that you needed right backs, lft backs etc. He can realise the problem before the season starts. 95% of people on this site are surely fully aware of how to play this game on this site player or players ve others is surely a more logical question for most. I do like to brag though!

High ownership and if Liverpool don't do well or he picks up another knock or two, will leave a lot of people disappointed.

I don’t mind the templates and the bandwagons because at the end we all are trying to get people in who are doing well. My question is. In your squad how many punts are too many? The only punts I have in mine are Bojan and maybe Schmeichel despite his fixtures. He is a son of a legend so he will be fine that’s my mantra.

A forward punt is very differnt to a midfield punt IMO. you have 3 strikers and if you punt on a 6 there are no decent options really... You punt 6 on a midfielder and you have some lateral movement available based on other players. I wouldn't go near Bojan.

I've got a fair few. In terms of differentials, I have Terry instead of the favoured Luis/Cahill.

I've got De Jong in midfield, and Diouf up front. Pretty out there with Diouf.

I don't think you can class Terry as a punt... he is tried and tested, a great option... seriously considering myself... I'd call him a slight differential...

I consider a punt to be someone who is new to the league, and as a result is a slight gamble...

That will still have a big dent on Costa's gametime though

I'd say Mou may start with costa but if he doesn't do well then he'll turn to drogba...

Btw costa's gametime will reduce surely... 60-70min sub each match maybe...

Sturridge might hurt FFS gw1. Huge ownership. None of it on here it seems. At Anfield against the remnants of Southampton. Think I'll give him the armband

Consistent FPL player. But think he's really overpriced for someone who doesn't strike double figures much and doesn't have set pieces.

Yes let's take out RVP and bring him in for games away to Citeh and Spurs... 😕

I think he'll score, but not ridiculously high, certainly not enough to make me want him for two tough away games....

look at Stokes scoring potential and many goals they score and then tell me. He will be last years assaidi. score some nice, important goals for stoke but be irrelevant fantasy wise

I’m jumping on the Bojan ship with you. If you can play for Ajax and Barca. You have to be worth it. I want to point out Luis Suarez played for Ajax and now Barca. So that’s good company.

exactly... he didn't go: stoke --> Ajax --> Barca. He went Barca --> Ajax --> Stoke.
          Reverse of suarez.
Next season he will be at Huddersfield town

    Mannone / Krul
    Terry / Rafael / Cameron / Upson / Duff
    Hazard / Mata / Eriksen / Albrighton / Noble
    Costa / Rooney / Giroud

Thoughts? I was thinking I could downgrade Eriksen to Henderson and beef up the defence a bit (Maybe Duff to Mert)

2x4.5's that rotate well + Shaw/UTD defender is surely better than DDG + Gilks + Debuchy no?
