Moving Target

Moving Target – Ryan Bertrand

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman made his third signing of the summer last Wednesday by acquiring Ryan Bertrand on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The 24-year-old follows Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle to St Mary’s, with the Saints reportedly given an option to make the deal permanent for £10m at the end of the upcoming campaign:

After completing the move, Bertrand admitted he turned down a number of options to sign up and insists the chance to ply his trade under Koeman was too good an opportunity to ignore:

“For me personally, this is another chance to play and a chance to join a fantastic club that’s moving in the right direction. With the set-up the club’s got, the manager it has coming in and the ethos it has, I thought this was a perfect match. The manager’s name speaks for itself, so to play under somebody like that will be good for me. His ethos and the way he plays matches my game. I had a lot of options and a lot of interest but, having met the people and spoken to the manager and seen what the club is about, in my mind this was the perfect decision. I’m looking to get games and to play regularly in the way and the formation that I like, and I’m sure that will benefit my game. I still think the best is yet to come from me.”

The History

A product of the Gillingham youth system, Bertrand was snapped up by Chelsea as a 15-year-old back in July 2005. With the likes of Ashley Cole and, more recently, Cesar Azpilicueta and summer signing Filipe Luis ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s clear that a move away suits all parties concerned – indeed, this is now the seventh time the Blues have farmed out the defender on loan.

Bertrand’s first spell away from the Bridge came at Bournemouth back in 2006/07, where he made five appearances for the first-team. The following year he was on the move again – first Oldham (21 appearances) then Norwich (18 appearances, two assists) afforded the left-back game time before he spent the next season on loan with the Canaries once again, where he was handed 38 starts.

In 2009/10, Bertrand was off to Reading, where he finished third in the voting for the club’s Player of the Season after 44 Championship outings produced one goal and three assists. The defender then spent the first half of the following campaign farmed out to Nottingham Forest, making 19 appearances and producing a single assist, before returning to Chelsea midway through the season. Managing just two goals and a pair of assists from 58 appearances over nine years for the Blues, Bertrand was also loaned out to Aston Villa midway through last season, where he started 16 league games for Paul Lambert’s side.

The 24-year-old has represented England from Under-17 to Under-21 level a total of 31 times, whilst he has also turned out for the senior international side twice making his debut back in August 2012.

The Prospects

After losing Luke Shaw to Man United earlier this summer, Koeman has been scouring the market for cover as he attempts to rebuild his decimated first-team squad. Youngster Matt Targett had started the three friendlies prior to Bertrand’s arrival but, as the Saints boss explained, he’s reluctant to put too much pressure on the teenager:

“I’m very happy to be able to bring Ryan in. He is a top player who will bring a lot of quality to the team. He has experience at the highest level and is an exciting, attacking player, which is what I like to see in my full-backs. I’ve been very impressed with how Matt Targett is doing in pre-season, but he is still young and developing, which I am sure he will continue to do over the coming seasons. Left-back is an important position in the team because it is quite specialised in terms of the attributes needed to play there, so it is nice to get this signing completed because it gives us some stability.”

Judging by his manager’s comments – and that likely £10m outlay come the end of the season – Bertrand, after years of frustration, looks poised to finally be handed the chance to nail down a regular role. His arrival all but ends Fantasy managers’ hopes for Targett, who, at a price of 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League, had the potential to offer us great value ahead of a very kind run of opening fixtures. Instead, the youngster is poised to remain as back-up for the position, as Bertrand – 5.0 in FPL and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game – gets the nod as Koeman’s first-choice option.

The mass exodus at St Mary’s is a real cause for concern, though. With Dejan Lovren also joining Shaw in departing the club, it remains to be seen whether Koeman can replicate the resilience that delivered 15 clean sheets in the previous campaign under Mauricio Pochettino – as rumours abound of a possible exit for defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, many have their doubts over the Saints’ defensive prospects.

Nonetheless, it’s impossible to overlook Southampton’s kind opening fixtures. Over the first 12 Gameweeks, Koeman’s side face only two of last term’s top eight in a schedule that’s rated above any other club by our Season Ticker. Home games with West Brom, Newcastle, QP, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester, supplemented by trips to the likes of West Ham, Swansea, Hull and Villa certainly suggest that Bertrand could be quick off the mark as he looks to finally prove himself as a top-level talent.

It’s worth keeping an eye on Koeman’s summer shopping spree, though – if he fails to replace Lovren, the likes of Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jos Hooiveld (4.0) could offer cheaper alternatives, though whether their presence at the back would translate to clean sheets is another matter altogether.

Funny how everyone says to ignore pre season form and yet Jovetic is in half the teams on here.

I'm not saying he's a bad option for one second by the way, I've had him since my first draft, but the backtracking is funny.

Ignoring pre season form would've made me not have Giroud week 1 last season and miss that good streak he had. It has it's benefits. When you see a player building confidence and a team gelling it's worth taking note I think.

very nice except I really think you need some Chelsea cover somewhere. I'd probably downgrade Johnson so that you can get a Chelsea defender. Also, Targett probably won't play now they have Bertrand, and there are better value 4.5 defenders than Vlaar in my opinion.

Him and Johnson are not remotely good enough to play for Liverpool. I agree Skertl is good at attacking the ball from set pieces, most of the time though it was put on a plate for him to score though. He is so slopping defensively i think we could have a very strong defence if we get Moreno, then it will be very competitive between Flanno and Manquillo at RB.

Skrtel is only good for his attacking potential. Such a risk to have in the defence. I wouldn't have Sakho either but he has potential and BR likes him so he should play.

And they signed a quality defender for 20 million in Lovren so you expect him to play.

(in reality though Agger should be playing instead of Sakho but BR doesn't like him for some reason)

I like Agger aswell, but would rather see Lovren and Sakho partnership. People seem to forget Lovren was the best defender in the prem before he got injured, also Southampton had one of the best defences in Europe until he got injured. With Sahko he is one of the best 'ball playing' defenders in the world, lacks a bit of composure though when it comes to tackling, loves to dive in.

Very nice, can't really moan about your two 4.0 defenders because upgrading them would mean losing one of your better players which isn't worth doing.
IMO Krul/Elliot is a bargain keeper twosome and I've gone for the same.
Consider Jovetic over Dzeko though. Dorrans could be a good alternative to Davis too perhaps?

That front three is the strongest I've seen on here too.
Given that Myhill won't play why not go for Elliot as he will come in for Krul.
Barkley is not getting much love on here but if gets time in the hole he's worth the extra money this season. Also nicely pricied for a switch to de Jong/Tadic/Sigurdsson if you feel the need to hog on a bandwagon.

I'd never go for a 5-man midfield, especially if your 5th mid is Arnie and it means you have Nugent.
I'd rather play a 442 and have Shaw + 4.5 mid than Wisdom + Arnie, both of whom aren't guaranteed starts at all.

Plenty of cash in your front 8 haha....

Possibly choosing one of Haz, Rams and Mata (Not Ramsey IMO) and opting for an Eriksen to possibly get Lovren...

    DDG (Mannone)
    Vermalen Azpi Lovren (Rio O'Shea)
    Ramsey Fabregas Mata Sigurdsson (Bentaleb)
    Costa Austin Rooney

WHAT IS THE WORD ON THIS ONE BOYS

drop Mannone for a 4.0 (are you ever going to play him over DDG?)
I assume you are hoping for Vermaelen to go to United? if so then you'd have 4 united players
I'd ditch Vermaelen for a 4.0 because you'd play Azpi and Lovren every week anyway and then choose between the other three based on fixture.
That 1.5 could be used to upgrade Bentaleb or Austin?

I know we bang on about form over fixtures all the time (Oops I did it again). However, Sterling had a great end to the season, was the only England player to perform during the World Cup (Not hard), and has continued it into pre season. He's the type of player who can deliver against any team. Yet Eriksen and Co are taking his 'place' in our teams.

Not sure how you can say anyone is due a Suarez-esque season. Suarez 13/14 was the highest performing player in FPL history. I'll be suprised if it's matched anytime soon; not least by someone like Sterling who, whilst talented, is not (and probbaly never will be) world class.

Quick comment on LFC's attacking threat.

I think Sterling will surprise a lot of people this season, he's looked unbelievable in pre-season and this will be his first proper full season. Last season he only came into the team at around the half way point and in his break through season, he disappeared half way through with injuries after a great start. Barring injuries, this should be his first season of continuous football, start to finish.

I've heard lots of "Sturridge needs to be step up" etc but Sturridge scored 20+ goals last season in the league and I think him stepping up with just be his natural progression, if we still had Suarez, I'd expect Sturridge to score more goals than last season.

I'd be surprised if we maintain the same competitive level as last season, a level which everyone was surprised to see last season as well, no-one saw 7th to 2nd, but if even if we don't maintain that level, we still score bucket loads of goals and Sturridge will probably score more goals in the league.

Hard to say, I wouldn't be surprised if we loaned him to another team in the league if he's been given a first team place, as it will do his development the world of good but if he stays then I think he might be a super-sub.

He is a very direct, powerful runner and he will scare the life out of defenses if he comes on after 70-80 minutes against tired legs. I don't see him being a regular starter, but as a super sub or player used in the cups, that will be his role if he stays.

The situation is different to Sterling, as Sterling was fast tracked due to our lack of quality attacking options. Sterling wasn't just a good youth player who was impressing, he was one of the best attackers in the first team, which is both bad and good.

Can see the Spurs game being tight, something like 2-1, but the City could be another 5 goaler, both teams are happy to leave themselves relatively open to aid their attack.

I expect him to stay but he, of course, did not play enough games last year. For me, he's a very important player but I couldn't guarantee him the games he wanted last year.

Why waste .5 on Mannone if you have DDG? I guess you are assuming vermalen will leave arsenal? Do you really want a liverpool defender? Will Azpi even play?

Liverpool have too much coverage on the defensive end to start the same back four (or three or five depending on how BR is playing them) if conceding too often...

Keeping Mannone since DDG will face City + Chelsea in weeks 10 and 11, thus using Mannone.

I think Vermalen will move, and thus establish a role in the United lineup.

As to if Azpi will play or not... Who could possibly pip him for his spot?

Austin proven Championship scorer and thus could adapt quite easily. Using Danny Graham's emergence two years back (I think) as proof that he can score efficiently.

Good argument however im still not tempted by a liverpool defender.

Maybe ive misread the chelsea situation but i assumed it would be Luis, terry, cahill and ivanovic at the back.

Agree that vermalen would be good if at utd but it is a bit of a gamble at the moment.

In terms of keepers i only ever have one playing keeper. Last season it was mannone and seemed to work out ok.

I did have austin as my third striker but swapped him. Might reconsider if remy goes.

mmm...Vermaelen throws a bit of a spanner in the works..I take it the thinking is it's still United ?...Even if it is then it's a few days to transfer (at best) and and a bit of time to work his way in above the CB's who have already been training the LVG way...Not going to be ready for GW1 is he ?

Wenger saying he is injured doesn't mean he is injured.

An injured player to Wenger is a player who isn't French.

Maybe not. This changes a fair bit of our plans, doesn't it?

Maybe doesn't that much after all. Just took a look at my team and realized I wasn't having him there anyway.

Instead, I appear to have 1.5m in the bank. What to do with it?

On the other hand, I've understood the reson why LVG wants Vermaelen is that as a former Ajax player he is already quite familiar with the way LVG wants him to play.

Monitor Sterling for potential GW1 explosion. He's on form.

Jovetic isn't a must have. I would be worried if I didn't have Rooney or RVP and a Chelsea attacker.

Thanks for the replies. Regarding Jovetic, its just my opinion but he is looking excellent at the moment. Only pre-season but I think he will be the main forward for City in the first couple of weeks at least.

I currently have a midfield of Siggy, Albrighton, Mata, Fab and Sanchez.

Who of the latter three for Sterling?

None. Latter 3 are better choices that Sterling but Fabregas if necessary
