Scout Report – Enner Valencia

West Ham made their fifth signing of the summer earlier this week by acquiring frontman Enner Valencia from Mexican side Pachuca. The Ecuador international has been granted a work permit by the FA and arrives at Upton Park on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be in the region of £12m:

The Hammers fought off a number of suitors to land their new striker, who came to prominence with a series of impressive displays in the recent World Cup. Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old reckons his summer exploits for Ecuador will stand him in good stead in his new surroundings:

“The World Cup was a good tournament for me personally, I scored three times and for my first World Cup it was a good experience, but I hope my next one is better for me and the team. Of course, the World Cup gives me confidence to come to Europe and I want to take and advance with this opportunity that West Ham have given to me. For me, scoring against England, one of the big teams in the world, before the World Cup was important for me. Hopefully I can score again against those defenders! I scored many goals as a striker. I’m fast, and I try to continue like that because I know the goals brought me to West Ham.”

The History

A product of the Caribe Junior youth system is his native Ecuador, Valencia joined Emelec on a free transfer in 2008. Initially starting his career as a winger, he failed to feature in the first-team until the arrival of current Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli in 2010 and once installed as a regular up front, quickly demonstrated his goal-getting abilities – over 117 appearances, he notched 23 times and also supplied 21 assists across all competitions and helped his side win the league in 2012/13.

Signed by Mexican outfit Pachuca in January this year, Valencia wasted no time in delivering the goals. In 23 appearances for his new club, he netted 18 times and also chipped in with a pair of assists, with his exploits winning Valencia the Golden Boot for finishing the season as top scorer in Mexico’s Premier League.

On the international stage, Valencia has featured for his country on 13 occasions and found the net seven times – impressively, the Hammers new boy has scored six times in his last six matches for Ecuador and grabbed three goals in the recent Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Valencia’s flourishing form should give Allardyce’s side a real shot in the arm as they attempt to improve upon a series of poor displays over the summer so far. The Hammers are looking to play a more expansive style of football in the season ahead but, after seeing his side draw two and lose two of their opening four friendlies, their manager admitted it’ll take some time before the players become accustomed to a new approach.

With club record signing Andy Carroll set to be sidelined for four months due to ankle ligament damage, Valencia looks poised to partner fellow new boy Mauro Zarate up top. Having racked up 18 goals for Velez Sarsfeld last season, the Argentine also arrives on the back of some impressive showings and has already grabbed his first goal for the club during pre-season – Zarate’s craft and guile, allied with Valencia’s agility and excellent aerial prowess will certainly afford the London club a new look up top for the upcoming campaign.

As mentioned, though, it remains to be seen just how quickly Allardyce can translate this new offensive style of play into Fantasy returns. Certainly, with just 40 goals to their name last term, West Ham did little to justify our Fantasy interest up front and it may well be that most would-be suitors will resist initial investment until the results start to improve.

Available for 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia’s appeal in the former game is dented by Zarate’s 6.5 price tag, given that the Argentine is potentially lined up for a share of dead-ball duties.

A mixed opening schedule is also likely to prove a deterrent. The season opener against Spurs is followed by trips to Palace and Hull in the following three and with Liverpool, United and City also on the agenda by Gameweek 9, Valencia looks one to monitor for now. If he can adjust quickly and replicate his international form in the English top-flight, though, the Ecuadorian may yet force his way into our Fantasy plans.

I'd say the Mexican league is a decent league. It continues to produce very good players that always produce at the world cup and generally translate well to European leagues

Geoff Cameron is back at Stoke City and wanting to know what the future holds after interest from up to nine clubs over the summer.

Cameron is training with his team-mates again after returning from extended leave following World Cup duty with the United States.

A regular right-back during his two seasons at the Britannia, he now sees that place going to Phil Bardsley following his free signing from Sunderland earlier this summer.

Cameron has always preferred to play central defence or centre midfield anyway, but wants to know if City boss Mark Hughes sees a future for him there too.

Sunderland and Hull have already been flagged up, but The Sentinel also understands there have also been inquiries from West Bromwich Albion, Swansea and Southampton.

Cameron was always a dodgy player to consider 'nailed on'. Now its confirmed, he is not nailed on and he could even be moving clubs.

With 3 clean sheets in the last 22 games and Bardsley now probably a starter (Sunderland's fantastic run began exactly when he lost his place in the first 11 and ended exactly when he returned), i doubt Stoke is the most reliable defence. There are other teams with good schedule too, Stoke will probably offer offensive options more than defensive ones.

Reason being if a striker scores he's more than likely getting top bonus points so you'll want 3 of them.

      3-4-3 generally more flexible.

With 3-4-3 if one striker doesn't play, you can go either 3-5-2 or 4-4-2. If one midfielder doesn't play, you can for 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 or 3-4-3.

With 3-5-2 if one striker doesn't play, you can go either 4-5-1 or 3-5-2. If one midfielder doesn't play you can only play 3-4-3 or 4-4-2.

He is in my team, but I will change him if Cech stays (Mourinho said he wanted to keep them both even if they were not happy)
if not it means bringing in Cahill so it's expensive.

It will be interesting to see how these flair players go at West Ham. Zarate and Valencia wouldn't be anywhere near as effective if big sam reverted to type.

They might change if big sam gets sacked which seems likely especially if he slips up early in the season.

I'd also be interested to see how his wages are taxed.

If Madrid pay his wages at the Spanish rate of tax and PSG pay accross that amount to Madrid the player will get more money than if he transferred and was taxed at the French rate of tax.

Most people probably find that completely boring though, but I have noticed more of these arrangements cropping up, or loaning back to a parent club after purchasing, possibly with the same results.

    Haz Mata eriksen snoddy SIGGY

      1) Nope. Though I'd do Debuchy -> Evans/Jones. United have much kinder fixtures and Debuchy loves a booking.

      2) Not a lot in it, IMO. Go on your gut.

      3) I'd do Ramsey -> Mata, again because of the fixture difference between Arsenal and United. I'd also do Cahill -> Luis and upgrade one of Upson or Wisdom. You don't want to play Vlaar every week considering how awful Villa's fixtures go in 3 or 4 weeks.

Who will people sell to bring in that player? Not one of their premium mids or their 4.5 mid. It will be Siggi. That massive ownership will dwindle very quickly and his price will plummet

Saving grace could be he follows with a game against Burnley. However if he should draw a blank there then owners would be in real trouble. Either sell for a loss or hold for more losses

Of course he could get attacking points against utd, but the chances must be slim , especially if Bony leaves

      Hedge your bets.

      Get both.

Bony will score for Liverpool vs Saints.

7.7% isn't massive ownership, but yes this could still happen to a degree

Its the reason i have dumped him for a Stoke midfielder. GW1 home to Villa

He does have high ownership by the active players. Most of the casuals will not have picked their teams yet, or will of picked one and never visit the site again

He is going to flop. If you need a midfielder at that price Henderson is miles better.

2 tough fixtures for Siggy in the opening 4 GW's is a problem no doubt. However if you have a plan to bench him for those fixtures its less of a problem.

Interesting point trigger. The idea of getting him in for 5.8 after GW5 might be more appealing however.

    Bit of a mad, A, B or C here:

    A) Mariappa, Lamela, Fabregas, Sterling, Jovetic, Costa
    B) Davies, Hazard, Sigurdsson, Sterling, Dzeko, Costa
    C) Davies, Hazard, Sigurdsson, Sanchez, Dzeko, Giroud

If you can process that many names, interested to hear your views or even one you'd definitely not consider.

Hmmm....tough one. Don't fancy Mariappa, Lamela or Fab over Haz. I really like Costa, but I also like Sanchez....so thnk it's down to B or C for me.

      So,
      B) Costa + Sterling
      C) Giroud + Sanchez

      B for me.

Thanks for that break down. That's helpful 🙂

Though Mariappa could be another random 4.5 and Lamela could be Eriksen, does that make any difference?
