Scout Report – Enner Valencia

West Ham made their fifth signing of the summer earlier this week by acquiring frontman Enner Valencia from Mexican side Pachuca. The Ecuador international has been granted a work permit by the FA and arrives at Upton Park on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be in the region of £12m:

The Hammers fought off a number of suitors to land their new striker, who came to prominence with a series of impressive displays in the recent World Cup. Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old reckons his summer exploits for Ecuador will stand him in good stead in his new surroundings:

“The World Cup was a good tournament for me personally, I scored three times and for my first World Cup it was a good experience, but I hope my next one is better for me and the team. Of course, the World Cup gives me confidence to come to Europe and I want to take and advance with this opportunity that West Ham have given to me. For me, scoring against England, one of the big teams in the world, before the World Cup was important for me. Hopefully I can score again against those defenders! I scored many goals as a striker. I’m fast, and I try to continue like that because I know the goals brought me to West Ham.”

The History

A product of the Caribe Junior youth system is his native Ecuador, Valencia joined Emelec on a free transfer in 2008. Initially starting his career as a winger, he failed to feature in the first-team until the arrival of current Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli in 2010 and once installed as a regular up front, quickly demonstrated his goal-getting abilities – over 117 appearances, he notched 23 times and also supplied 21 assists across all competitions and helped his side win the league in 2012/13.

Signed by Mexican outfit Pachuca in January this year, Valencia wasted no time in delivering the goals. In 23 appearances for his new club, he netted 18 times and also chipped in with a pair of assists, with his exploits winning Valencia the Golden Boot for finishing the season as top scorer in Mexico’s Premier League.

On the international stage, Valencia has featured for his country on 13 occasions and found the net seven times – impressively, the Hammers new boy has scored six times in his last six matches for Ecuador and grabbed three goals in the recent Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Valencia’s flourishing form should give Allardyce’s side a real shot in the arm as they attempt to improve upon a series of poor displays over the summer so far. The Hammers are looking to play a more expansive style of football in the season ahead but, after seeing his side draw two and lose two of their opening four friendlies, their manager admitted it’ll take some time before the players become accustomed to a new approach.

With club record signing Andy Carroll set to be sidelined for four months due to ankle ligament damage, Valencia looks poised to partner fellow new boy Mauro Zarate up top. Having racked up 18 goals for Velez Sarsfeld last season, the Argentine also arrives on the back of some impressive showings and has already grabbed his first goal for the club during pre-season – Zarate’s craft and guile, allied with Valencia’s agility and excellent aerial prowess will certainly afford the London club a new look up top for the upcoming campaign.

As mentioned, though, it remains to be seen just how quickly Allardyce can translate this new offensive style of play into Fantasy returns. Certainly, with just 40 goals to their name last term, West Ham did little to justify our Fantasy interest up front and it may well be that most would-be suitors will resist initial investment until the results start to improve.

Available for 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia’s appeal in the former game is dented by Zarate’s 6.5 price tag, given that the Argentine is potentially lined up for a share of dead-ball duties.

A mixed opening schedule is also likely to prove a deterrent. The season opener against Spurs is followed by trips to Palace and Hull in the following three and with Liverpool, United and City also on the agenda by Gameweek 9, Valencia looks one to monitor for now. If he can adjust quickly and replicate his international form in the English top-flight, though, the Ecuadorian may yet force his way into our Fantasy plans.

Not a fan of the 4-4-2 formation. And I don't like the GK rotation either. Also, I would want at least one or two United attackers.

Looks good to me - tho...
      - no utd attackers is a big risk given the fixtures and that pretty much every one else has at least 1...
      - not sure of Luis being nailed on - think Cahill is the only Chelsea defender guaranteed to play every match hes fit for
      - Not a huge fan of Vlaar (dep on move) and Albrighton (not as nailed on as prev thought?) and don't know anything about Nugent to comment on him...

        Thanks for the feedback.

Agree I am not 100% on luis, I've got 0.5m I'm the bank so I might upgrade to either Cahill or Terry.

Also might slip in mata or Rooney.

As for nugent, I like him 🙂

Anyone else having trouble deciding between best Arsenal/Chelsea midfield combo?

Have transfered in & out Hazard/Fab & Sanchez/Rambo so many times!

Gamble on the new boys to get off to a flying start or the safety of going with what we know from last season?

Am currently on Fab & Rambo to free up vital cash but Feel a tad naked with out the others!

    Your preferred combo?

      Sanchez and Hazard

My reason being, if both explode it will be very hard to fit both into my team after GW1. Can easily move them down to Fab/Rambo if they perform well but going the other way is much harder.

I'm getting very worried about this whole Fab vs. Haz and Ramsey vs. Sanchez conundrum.

For the moment, I have both Haz and Sanchez over the other two. I personally feel like Haz and Sanchez will outscore the other two but I also have them because it will be much easier to downgrade either one or the other than upgrade without taking at least a hit.

What do you guys think? How do you feel and who do you have for the moment?

I'm struggling with the same conundrum. I agree with your reasoning, but on the other hand, if I start with Fab and Ramsey, I might get Costa instead of Jovetic/Dzeko in GW1, who is another one that could explode, and would be difficult to fit in with Haz and Sanchez soaking up all that cash.

That's true. I do have Haz, Sanchez and Costa, but then my 3rd striker is Austin instead of Dzeko because I have no more cash.

My point is mainly that you'll spend the extra cash somewhere else, making it easier to downgrade than upgrade in that position instead.

Enrique? With those fixtures? Davies is a risk too.

Adebayor could be gold but, he was sick last week and it´ll take some time to catch the pace of his team mates that had already rolled on a pre-season that he is absent from.

Are Simpson (QPR) and Chester (HULL) both reasonably nailed on?

A combination of the two gives:
HUL, STO, SUN. WHU, STO, sou, CRY, LIV, AVL, SOU, bur, new

For the first 12 gameweeks that seems pretty decent. Only a couple of duff weeks thrown in there.

As a combination I'm beginning to prefer this to Davies (TOT) and Wisdom.

      Always proven.

Fab has shown in the past that he's a bonafide FPL heavyweight though, so i'd include him in that first list

steven davis quietly goes about his business (7 assists last season), potential to play more attacking this time around. nothing truly exciting there. dorrans has the potential to be maloney of 2 seasons ago

Been doing some tinkering with my team... Thoughts?
    De Gea
    Debuchy, Vertonghan, Huth, Collocini, Taylor
    Mata, Hazard, Fabregas, Siggurdson, Puncheon
    Rooney, Giroud, Austin

    Thoughts?

I asked this a few days ago, but given the performances so far in friendlies, I ask again:
Those with Dzeko, how concerned are you with Jovetic now fully fit?
At the start of the season, City could have all of Aguero, Dzeko and Jovetic vying for places, and depending on formation, there could be just one available.
Jovetic's form can also now not be ignored.

Was hoping for CS to clear things up, but Pelle might very well rest Aguero for the shield and play him in GW1. I think I'll just wait and see who to bring in from the City attack.

Jovetic is making me feel slightly uneasy about my dzeko pick..

however the 2 goals against liverpool were tap ins that my nan probably could've scored (and she has a dodgy hip)...didn't see his other goals..any good?

The first game he had an all round game. He played very well. Man of the match, maybe tied with Navas.
