Technical Area

The Technical Area – Sanchez’ Gunners Debut Analysed

All eyes were on Arsenal’s summer signing Alexis Sanchez as the Gunners squared up to City in Sunday’s Community Shield. Starting on the right flank for Arsene Wenger’s side, the Chilean was afforded 45 minutes of the 3-0 win as he continues to build up his match fitness, although a failure to produce the goods has seen his popularity and ownership levels dip across the Fantasy games as we edge towards next weekend’s deadline.

In our first Technical Area piece of the 2014/15 campaign, we delve into the data from Sunday’s encounter to assess just how Sanchez fared in his first competitive match for his new club.

“sanchez"

As shown by the average position map, Sanchez (number 17) found himself in possession further up the field than Santi Cazorla (19) or Aaron Ramsey (16), the other two players in the Gunners’ attacking midfield three behind Yaya Sanogo (22).

The Chilean may have only featured in the first-half of the 3-0 win but it’s clear how much his team-mates are looking to get the ball to him – Sanchez received a pass every 1.6 minutes which, along with Ramsey, was the quickest of any Arsenal player. Furthermore, his average of 1.1 minutes per touch was, along with Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, joint-top for the Gunners, despite being fielded on the flank.

When we focus on the final third statistics, it’s clear just how prominent the former Barcelona man could become in Arsenal’s attacking forays. Sanchez registered 26 touches in the final third – more than Cazorla (25) despite the latter playing 70 minutes – and also not far behind Ramsey’s 31. In addition, the new boy received more passes (18) than Cazorla’s 17 in this area, with Ramsey registering 21 over 86 minutes on the pitch.

A comparison with City’s David Silva, who managed 49 minutes, is also encouraging. The City man touched the ball every 1.1 minutes, though managed 21 touches in the final third and received 13 passes in this area.

When we assess the distribution, though, there’s clear room for improvement. The Chilean mustered a 60% pass completion rate, with just 15 of his 25 attempts finding their target; compared to the rest of the Gunners midfield starters, Ramsey (81%), Cazorla (85.7%), Mikel Arteta (86.5%) and Wilshere (87.8%), this suggests Sanchez is not yet on the same wavelength as his team-mates or is simply trying for the killer ball too often. It’s perhaps telling, though, that Sanchez’ 79.7% pass accuracy in La Liga last term was the lowest of any Barcelona outfield regular; bearing in mind he accrued 10 assists, this suggests that he’s willing to try a riskier pass more than most players.

Whilst his passing was less than impressive, Sanchez’ trickery out wide posed City plenty of problems – the Chilean’s seven dribbles was second only to Ramsey’s eight and underlines just how often he is willing to take on an opponent.

His overall impact shows he’s yet to settle, though. Sanchez managed just one touch in the penalty box, failed to fire any attempts on goal and produced just a single key pass – those numbers don’t exactly scream out to Fantasy managers but, as the final third stats indicate, Wenger’s side is looking to feed the former Barcelona man as much as possible high up the pitch and once he integrates with his new team-mates, we can surely expect an end product.

Why has Clyne not been bought yet? I actually think he's class, better than Chambers in aspects.

As bad as Southampton have been, a team cant sell EVERY player. They would likely look for serious cash to depart with another defender, which clubs wont stump up. Also Chambers is one for the future.

I'm thinking start Studge over Costa for the following reasons:

    1) Proven points machine
    2) Better armband option
    3) Liverpool more attacking than Chelski
    4) Easier to transfer down than up.

    Is there any logic here?

      1) No reason to suggest Costa won't be the same.
      2) This completely depends on their form so I disagree.
      3) Again, this depends on the moment, Liverpool were the most defensive side in the leage at the start of last year winning every match 1-0 until Suarez got back, Chelsea put shed loads of goals past teams and shored up towards the end of the season.

      4) The only point that's 100% true 😉

The Sanchez vs Ramsey dilemma has been plaguing me for ages. I've finally relented and switched to Ramsey with the extra funds going half way towards a Puncheon -> Mata upgrade. I'm going with the theory that if Sanchez hits finds his feet, he can be brought in either as a swap for Ramsey or as a weakening of my front three in a 4-5-1 (with the other 4 being Ramsey, Hazard, Mata and Gerrard/Sterling).

Ok, so this is a bit late in the day given that the season starts in a few days and most people have made their decisions with regard to defensive rotations, etc. but I thought I'd post it anyway.

The image I've linked below is of a spreadsheet which is intended to give a VERY crude measure of clean sheet predictability for the season just gone.

Basically it's informed by another sheet in which I've recorded all of the clean sheets each team kept, the venue (home/away),the opponents and the opponent's "value". The "value" is the opponent's final league positions. E.g. Man City in 2013/14 = 1. In other words the lower the value, the tougher the opposition the clean sheets were achieved against.

The front sheet I've shown then summarises this data and averages the value per clean sheet at home, away and in total. I've sorted the table on total average (highest to lowest), which in theory shows the teams who keep clean sheets in the easiest fixtures at the top.

What this shows is that last season Swansea were arguably the easiest team to anticipate a clean sheet for - not only did they keep most of their clean sheets at home, but they were also against weaker opposition generally speaking. The same can also be said for Hull whose home/away ratio was even greater. This would have made Swansea and Hull defenders excellent candidates for rotation last season as you would have caught almost all of the points and benched very few.

At the other end of the scale there are some big hitters. Chelsea being at the bottom is probably to be expected given their much discussed tendancy to 'park the bus' in the big games. Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton also appear near the bottom of the list. This suggests that if you own their defenders you should play them every week - a tactic already employed by most.

Interestingly, West Brom and Sunderland are also near the bottom suggesting their defences sometimes perform when not expected to and vice versa. Given that they also had a near even split of home/away clean sheets they would seem to be poor candidates for rotation by either of the usual theories.

I'm sure other people can read more into this data (if they're so inclined) but those are the first points I drew out.

I'd like to reiterate how crude a measure this is and highlight the obvious point that this is data from last season which is nigh on irrelevant once this season gets going properly and new patterns emerge. If anyone is desperately interested I have this data for every season back to 2009/10 but that's more because I don't get rid of data rather than I think it's useful 🙂

Cheers Bowstring, I was surprised by one or two of the results, it's making me question a couple of my decisions now - the Foster Krul rotation looks a little less attractive now.

Duff is fine unless they find that CB they've been looking for...

The question for me is Bruce at Hull to work with Duff?

He's started & played meaningful mins during qualifiers but, it all depends if the Tigers keep playing with 3 at the back.

There's never anything wrong with *doubling up*...
Anyone who feels otherwise is wildly ignorant, as there are plenty of examples to show this is a viable strategy:

      Suarez & Sturridge
      Rooney & RVP
      Mata & Hazard
      Walcott & Cazorla
      Yaya, Silva & Kun

I'll stop now but, you get the point...

This, although personally I'd never double up on strikers as one determined scrappy defensive setup can hammer your weekly points. At least a midfield/striker combo has more chance of bonus points + clean sheet.

Perhaps. But 7m is a lot to spend. If he creeps up to 7.3 or higher it'd be nigh on impossible to fit him in. He's basically a winger on FK and peno duty. It's like a 2-5-3!

Same problem. I've negotiated, with myself, that I'll bring him in week 4 if he's started super strongly or more likely week 8 when his bad run of fixtures is over (hoping he may have dropped a little in price).

Being new at FPL, am I right in thinking you have to have your squad intact before the lineups are revealed?

This only helps in the rotation of your existing players, not that you can bring new players in once you've seen the lineups, right?

How are those without City coverage feeling as we approach the first kick-offs? They're one of those teams that can really tear it up, despite their lacklustre showing last Sunday! Should I therefore upgrade Snoddy to Nasri (below), or even Silva, and just downgrade my defence until that annoying minus sign disappears, or do I have a better balance as is?
