The Digest – Gameweek 1

Our final look at the opening Gameweek of the season casts an eye over Chelsea’s attacking impetus after last night’s demolition of Burnley. Swansea’s in-form playmaker is much in-demand as the fixtures turn kind whilst United’s dismal opening day defeat has already sparked an exodus as Fantasy managers take stock.

The Player

Gylfi Sigurdsson spoiled the opening day party at Old Trafford to spark the first major bandwagon of the 2014/15 campaign. Prior to the United clash, we were concerned over a move to the right flank in Swansea’s final friendly, whilst the form of Bojan Krkic had many eyeing up a home/away rotation pairing to avoid the so-called tougher fixtures.

Sigurdsson’s goal and assist, allied with maximum bonus, underlines just how deadly he can be when fielded in his preferred position. Having struggled to find his form at Spurs, a return to the Liberty – where he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Swans in 2011/12 – has immediately reinvigorated his Fantasy prospects.

Moving up to 6.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sigurdsson is poised to rise again before the weekend deadline arrives, but even then, that cost looks a bargain when you analyse his fixtures. Buoyed by their 2-1 triumph against United, Garry Monk’s side now face four home showdowns in the next six Gameweeks, as Burnley, West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle all roll up to the Liberty, and with a trip to Sunderland also included in that run, it’ll take nerves of steel to turn our backs on the playmaker right now.

The Team

Last season, Chelsea’s problems in the final third cost them dearly. Jose Mourinho’s side finished just four points behind champions City despite scoring over 30 goals fewer than their title rivals but last night’s display at Burnley suggests the Blues’ summer signings could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

With Cesc Fabregas dictating play in the centre of the park and Diego Costa’s predatory instincts already in evidence, Chelsea were in cruise control despite an ineffectual display from Eden Hazard. Mourinho’s decision to hand Andre Schurrle the right-wing berth also paid off as the German slotted home an outstanding team goal – as we mentioned in this morning’s Scout Notes, Schurrle, at 7.5, had a better minutes-per-goal record than any team-mate last term, and if he can steer clear of his manager’s rotation, seems an enticing midfield prospect.

The form of their attackers is likely to keep the spotlight away from Mourinho’s backline right now. A defence that delivered 18 shut-outs in the season gone by looks primed for investment, but the arrival of Filipe Luis places question marks over the likelihood of rotation at the back. For now, home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the next five Gameweeks should keep the focus on Fabregas and co further up the field whilst we look for signs of consistency of selection amongst Mourinho’s illustrious backline.

The Talking Point

You can’t say he didn’t warn us. Swansea’s win over United may have caused shock waves around the Premier League but it was perhaps no real surprise to Louis van Gaal – only last month the Dutchman admitted that “every club where I have been, I’ve struggled for the first three months”.

United were heavily backed across the Fantasy games heading into the opener with the Swans after a 100% record over the summer, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool. With injuries hitting hard, though, Van Gaal’s patched-up first-team look far from the finished product and Fantasy managers are already having second thoughts. Juan Mata is second only to the injured Ross Barkley for transfers out this week, with many trading out the Spaniard after a number of similarly priced alternatives such as the afore-mentioned Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all delivered.

With Wayne Rooney residing in almost 50% of teams, it’s perhaps understandable that a double-up doesn’t appeal to many, though the fixtures are still very much in United’s favour. Van Gaal’s team face just one of last term’s top eight in the next seven matches but, as Saturday’s stumble suggests, they are struggling for the form to take advantage of such a run.

A change of formation during the Swansea defeat also indicates Van Gaal is still far from certain over his options at the moment, and with less than two weeks until the transfer deadline, the Red Devils boss is apparently set to invest heavily in alternatives to his current crop. Another couple of performances like last weekend’s and the same could easily be said for Fantasy managers.

    THE MATA KNEEJERK

    MATA > SILVA/STERLING/FAB/RAMBO

I'm sure there are a lot of people out there, like me, considering whether to ship out Mata or not on the back of a GW1 blank when there is such a wealth of alternative options.

I thought I'd do some very basic analysis to help with my/your decision. As it happens, I have Fab and Rambo already but thought it was still worth including them.

Average Points Per 90 mins in previous 3 seasons:

    Mata: 2011 = 5.39 2012 = 7.06 2013 = 5.78
    Silva: 2011 = 5.94 2012 = 5.25 2013 = 6.29
    Ster: 2011 = 0 2012 = 4.31 2013 = 5.28
    Ram: 2011 = 3.80 2012 = 3.60 2013 = 7.30
    Fab: 2008 = 5.14 2009 = 8.92 2013 = 6.09

Next 6 Fixtures (taking us through to the second International break)

Mata: sun, bur, QPR, lei, WHM, EVE
Silva: LIV, STO, ars, CHE, hul, avl
Ster: mci, spu, AVL, whm, EVE, WBA
Ram: eve, lei, MCI, avl, SPU, che
Fab: LEI, eve, SWA, mci, AVL, cpl

    Conclusion:

Mata: Undoubtedly has the best fixtures. Two away games against lower teams will take the pressure off when they are not at Old Trafford. Consistently scores high points totals and has the ability to explode in games with goals and assists. My only reservation is that he has such a weakened team around him that he cannot play his normal game. In pre-season it was different as they are simply not the same as Premiership matches. Should be top scoring MUN mid though.

Silva: Next 4 fixtures are really not great although to an extent a player like Silva has the ability to be fixture proof, as do all these candidates. Doesn't tend to explode quite as much as the others and I would expect just the odd goal/assist in the next few weeks. Such a consistent performer though and with Aguero fit he could be magic! Shares points with other mids.

Sterling: More difficult to judge as he is a developing talent. Has the propensity to explode in games and get a couple of goals plus an assist but also I think he can go missing. Liverpool were less than convincing against Saints and their up coming fixtures are not great. Better option after next 2 gameweeks possibly? Plenty of others to share points with in LIV team.

Rambo: Exploded onto the scene last season and is playing in a similar position to Fab ghosting in to cause mayhem almost at will. Very poor upcoming fixtures though and so many other players to share points with.

Fab: Massive points potential and a good set of fixtures coming up should see him score well. Can be explosive in games and I think will score goals. Will have to share the points but I think Chelsea will be free scoring this season so shouldn't be a problem.

I would say that if you have Mata and don't have Fab (or Haz) then it's a no-brainer to switch. Particularly taking into account that Mata will drop £0.1m before Saturday morning and Fab will rise £0.1m tonight.

With any of the others, I genuinely feel that the poor up coming fixtures and the fact they will have to share points with others in the team it would be a knee jerk. Waiting to move to Sterling in GW4 would be the sensible move. By them we would have a better idea of Mata's form and the players will probably be on similar values.

After Mata's price drop tonight you won't be able to make the switch to Silva or Rambo without juggling elsewhere in the team but with Arsenal and City's fixtures I can't see them outscoring Mata.

So I'm sticking with Mata and sweating it out with a view to jumping on Sterling in GW4 depending on form. Now we wait and see.........

I agree, but it was more a point about the fact that Mata doesn't have much midfield threat to share points with whereas Silva has Yaya/Nasri, Sterling has Gerard/Hendo/Cout, Rambo has Sanchez/Ozil/Caz/Wally and Fab has Haz/Shurrle/Oscar

I don't think you need to look at it quite so long term. We get a free transfer every week - yes you'll need it for injuries/suspensions at times, but I'd sooner look at the next couple of games for an attacking player than the next six. Simply, I think that Fabregas will probably outscore Mata over the next three matches (LEI/eve/SWA vs sun/bur/QPR), and Fabregas is going up in value, whilst Mata is going down. For a free transfer, I think it's a no brainer.

I've just been looking at the stats for Mata v Sterling and where one has the upper hand in some stats they lose out in others. But Sterling is on top in the stats that matters most for big points hauls (albeit on the basis of only one game). That being said, the next fixture is far more favourable on paper for Mata.

I'm loathed to make the move from Mata to Sterling for GW2 given the fixtures, especially for -4, but I also have a deep aversion to losing TV at this stage of the season. Sadly, I didn't have the benefit of seeing either in action during GW1 so I'm reliant on stats. I do have Rooney, but I don't have any Liverpool players.

My head says wait a week and see, my heart says switch. I just wish everyone was holding steady with Mata for another week, then I would feel more comfortable waiting.

as far as im concerned this is a no brainer......KEEP MATA!! Sterling plays away at city then spurs who looked tight at the back against west ham. i dont see sterling doing much in those 2 games whereas mata will easily out score sterling as united are under pressure to perform in their next two. sterling will finish on 7 points over the two games and mata will finish on the mid teens im my view. then swap mata for sterling regardless of price rises and reductions. at the end of the day its points that counts at the end of the day, not value.

Yes, the projections do favour keeping Mata over Sterling short term at least. But my early season strategy is usually about building team value so I can afford more big hitters bringing me more points consistently later in the season. I have a long term strategy v potential short term gain dilemma here. But if Mata had showed more attacking threat in GW1 I would be more convinced that he would actually provide that short term gain...

With gibbs confirmed out for 2 - 3 weeks looks like monreal is a cheap option into Arsenal's back four or could they swap it about a bit so cdebucy and hambers play as the full backs with mert coming back ..

    Hey, who do I pick?

    A) Jovetic (liv)

    B) Caulker (tot)

Too risky to play Jovetic with Aguero back?? But don't like Caulker option either.

Because Costa is a million cheaper than Sturridge, which is a big difference when you bring the rest of your team's balance into the picture.

    GW2?

    Begovic (Elliot)

    Terry, Clyne, Debuchey (Coloccini, Caulker)

Mata, Fabregas (C), Siggy, Ramsey (Marney)

    Costa (VC), Rooney, Bojan

I'm not sure about the last defence spot (Debuchey, Colo or Caulker), I don't expect any of them will keep a clean sheet...

Also, my knee is seriously jerking to take -4 for mata>sterling with the incoming price fall/rise, I'm going to stay strong though (hopefully) I didn't buy mata for 1 game...
