The Digest – Gameweek 1

Our final look at the opening Gameweek of the season casts an eye over Chelsea’s attacking impetus after last night’s demolition of Burnley. Swansea’s in-form playmaker is much in-demand as the fixtures turn kind whilst United’s dismal opening day defeat has already sparked an exodus as Fantasy managers take stock.

The Player

Gylfi Sigurdsson spoiled the opening day party at Old Trafford to spark the first major bandwagon of the 2014/15 campaign. Prior to the United clash, we were concerned over a move to the right flank in Swansea’s final friendly, whilst the form of Bojan Krkic had many eyeing up a home/away rotation pairing to avoid the so-called tougher fixtures.

Sigurdsson’s goal and assist, allied with maximum bonus, underlines just how deadly he can be when fielded in his preferred position. Having struggled to find his form at Spurs, a return to the Liberty – where he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Swans in 2011/12 – has immediately reinvigorated his Fantasy prospects.

Moving up to 6.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sigurdsson is poised to rise again before the weekend deadline arrives, but even then, that cost looks a bargain when you analyse his fixtures. Buoyed by their 2-1 triumph against United, Garry Monk’s side now face four home showdowns in the next six Gameweeks, as Burnley, West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle all roll up to the Liberty, and with a trip to Sunderland also included in that run, it’ll take nerves of steel to turn our backs on the playmaker right now.

The Team

Last season, Chelsea’s problems in the final third cost them dearly. Jose Mourinho’s side finished just four points behind champions City despite scoring over 30 goals fewer than their title rivals but last night’s display at Burnley suggests the Blues’ summer signings could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

With Cesc Fabregas dictating play in the centre of the park and Diego Costa’s predatory instincts already in evidence, Chelsea were in cruise control despite an ineffectual display from Eden Hazard. Mourinho’s decision to hand Andre Schurrle the right-wing berth also paid off as the German slotted home an outstanding team goal – as we mentioned in this morning’s Scout Notes, Schurrle, at 7.5, had a better minutes-per-goal record than any team-mate last term, and if he can steer clear of his manager’s rotation, seems an enticing midfield prospect.

The form of their attackers is likely to keep the spotlight away from Mourinho’s backline right now. A defence that delivered 18 shut-outs in the season gone by looks primed for investment, but the arrival of Filipe Luis places question marks over the likelihood of rotation at the back. For now, home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the next five Gameweeks should keep the focus on Fabregas and co further up the field whilst we look for signs of consistency of selection amongst Mourinho’s illustrious backline.

The Talking Point

You can’t say he didn’t warn us. Swansea’s win over United may have caused shock waves around the Premier League but it was perhaps no real surprise to Louis van Gaal – only last month the Dutchman admitted that “every club where I have been, I’ve struggled for the first three months”.

United were heavily backed across the Fantasy games heading into the opener with the Swans after a 100% record over the summer, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool. With injuries hitting hard, though, Van Gaal’s patched-up first-team look far from the finished product and Fantasy managers are already having second thoughts. Juan Mata is second only to the injured Ross Barkley for transfers out this week, with many trading out the Spaniard after a number of similarly priced alternatives such as the afore-mentioned Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all delivered.

With Wayne Rooney residing in almost 50% of teams, it’s perhaps understandable that a double-up doesn’t appeal to many, though the fixtures are still very much in United’s favour. Van Gaal’s team face just one of last term’s top eight in the next seven matches but, as Saturday’s stumble suggests, they are struggling for the form to take advantage of such a run.

A change of formation during the Swansea defeat also indicates Van Gaal is still far from certain over his options at the moment, and with less than two weeks until the transfer deadline, the Red Devils boss is apparently set to invest heavily in alternatives to his current crop. Another couple of performances like last weekend’s and the same could easily be said for Fantasy managers.

cesc will be 9.3 by Saturday kick off, if he does well Saturday afternoon could be 9.4 by the end of the Monday night game

mata will be 8.9 (or maybe even 8.8) by Saturday kick off. Plays Sunday - if really good performance could gain 0.1

    Price changes.

I thought it used to be when NTI was 33k that a player would rise.

But see Fabs for example, 50k NTI today but only rose 84%

Anyone know the formula? Does it depend on ownership?

Price rises are a flat rate - everyone will rise when their NTI hits a specific value. But this value depends on the number of active players and so fluctuates over the season.

The target? I reckon about 45k at the moment - but will continue to rise for the first 8 or 9 weeks, then plateau, then start dropping slowly for the rest of the season.

Right, I was offering an alternative. I would pick the most attacking 5.5m if getting rid of Young after one week. I am keeping to see what he does if he doesn't get forced deeper by injury.

I don't think that this has been posted here yet, so I will post it now. This was not created by me, I am not taking credit for the work. It was made by Berbacat, so kudos to him.

The concept of this document revolves around a "magic" number that is required to get bonus points for the week. While we have our preconceptions of how players in certain positions get bonuses, the rules for BPS Index Scoring has been tweaked and this article provides updates for who wins and loses.

The spreadsheet also filters the players by Home/Away, as well as Top 7/Bottom 13 Opposition, which can be used to adjust their BP Index Score for difficulty.

    REPOST:
Slightly above average performance with 59 points. A few things wrong with the team and not sure where I will need to adjust first. I did already make my FT though and just need advise on taking a -4 hit with my team. Here is the team that I fielded

    DDG
    Lovern, Vlaar, Debuchy
    Hazard, Siggy, Mata, Ramsey
    Rooney, Lukaku, Austin

Subs: Myhill, Luis, Davies, El Almandi

I had Luis starting with Siggy as my first sub (thank god Luis didn't play)

My FT was Austin--->Berahino hoping he can replicate form before moving to WBA or even better if he did Saturday's game :-P. I feel he may do better than any of the QPR strikers anyways.

So what do people think of a -4 hit? and who would the obvious cut be to warrant a -4 meaning he will repay more than I lost!?

I know! Luis in the end had the silver lining as an auto sub to put Siggy on and him off 🙂

I think I may leave Luis for GW2 and after that get him out with my FT. Or should I take the hit now and get in Clyne to free up some money!

finishing phd here. lots of sympathy. basically, set yourself a word count target every day and don't stop tip you've done it. just write, don't worry about editing, and see how much raw material you can get down. then, if you have time, edit it furiously at the end. just get something written.

          yup.

          QPR - home.

QPR gave away a lot of possesion in dangerous areas vs Hull. Lamela could thrive especially against a 3-5-2 formation where he is intelligent enough to find those pockets of space and exploit them.

          POOL -home

Pool don't like being pressed high up the pitch - spurs may well play on the counter and will be out for revenge.

The people who are raging against the Mata -> Fab transfer haven't seem to be taking account of the fact that it is actually possible to transfer Mata in again if it looks like he's hitting form.

Yes it could prove to be a waste of transfer but currently the fact is that one is rocketing in price and the other is falling and although it is about points at the end of the day, the extra team value undoubtedly comes in use later on in the season

Completely, and I think for now Fabregas look one of the best FPL prospects (I know he only got two assists but he looked awesome) and if Mata were to come to form you wouldn't reverse the Mata -> Fab transfer, you'd get rid of somebody else

    Very nearly WC'd.

At which point I realised I planned to do Dzeko > Naismith to accommodate my plans. What a complete Giroud I am.

Have decided I'm only going to WC if I have injured/suspended players that will need -8pts or above to fix and get 12/13 players available. There will be a point there always is.

Normally mess my team right up my team with a WC, so even more reason to wait until I need to.
