Scout Report – Federico Fernandez

Swansea continued their shrewd business during the current transfer window by snapping up Argentine centre-back Federico Fernandez from Napoli. The 25-year-old, who is the club’s eighth summer signing, expressed his delight at being given an opportunity to play in the English top-flight.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Premier League – it is the best in the world – and I’m grateful to Swansea for giving me this opportunity. I saw a team that holds the ball and plays very good football. It caught my attention. I can identify myself with the Swansea style – I like to play the ball from the back and, of course, I love to defend too.”

THE HISTORY

Fernandez began his career at Argentina’s Primera Division side Estudiantes. He played twice in their run to the Copa Sudamericana final in 2008 – aged just 18 – but only cemented his place in the side when manager Alejandro Sabella, now head coach of the national team, arrived. Fernandez scored his first goal against Lanús in 2009, but was an unused substitute as Estudiantes won the Copa Libertadores final that year and signed with Napoli for €3million the following December.

Having netted two goals for Napoli, both headers, to add to his four goals at Estudiantes, the defender eventually struggled for playing time, and was loaned out to Getafe for the second half of last season, where he played 14 times and scored once.

Fernandez won the first of 26 international caps in 2011, but was not named in the Copa America squad later that year. Nevertheless, he became one of Argentina’s key centre-halves during the 2014 World Cup, playing 990 minutes in qualifying and starting every fixture until the quarter-final, when he lost his place to Martín Demichelis despite La Albiceleste winning every match with him in the side.

THE PROSPECTS

Fernandez is an imposing centre-back who reads the game well and can dominate both aerially and on the deck. He has professed his admiration for Swansea’s silky, pass-dependent style of football but although the stats suggest he is unlikely to light up Fantasy football with goals or assists, he could be an interesting route into a defence with excellent upcoming fixtures.

Immediate investment in Swansea clean sheets could be a wise move. A tough trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 aside, Garry Monk’s men have a generous opening fixture list with which to capitalise on their shock win at Old Trafford. In the next two weeks they have back-to-back home fixtures against Burnley and West Brom, and showdowns against Southampton, Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle and Leicester complete the schedule until November.

Fernandez comes in at a price of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League, matching Swansea’s most expensive defenders Angel Rangel and Ashley Williams. The Argentine’s arrival effectively kills off any hope of Kyle Bartley (4.0) making the team, ruling the latter out of contention as a budget backline contender. The move also spells disaster for owners of Jordi Amat (4.5), who looks set to lose his place as Monk attempts to improve upon a dubious defensive record that has seen the Swans register just two clean sheets in his 15 Premier League matches at the helm.

It also leaves an interesting prospect in Neil Taylor (4.5), who would now appear the cheapest route into the back line. The left-back’s pitch time could be worth monitoring, though; after being booked against United, he was replaced by Dwight Tiendalli (4.5) after just 52 minutes as Adnan Januzaj tormented him on the flank. Frustratingly, Monk has confirmed the club are still awaiting international clearance for Fernandez ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Burnley but the fixtures certainly suggest that, once available, he could be worth considering if his impact helps address the Swans defensive woes.

Let's face people like honey badger would be jumping in their boots if United signed Balotelli. I mean I saw how excited you lot got over the signing over Rojo let alone a players who's proved he can be quality at times.

I haven't even mentioned Rojo on here since he signed. I just replied to your comments. However, you said Rojo was a panic buy. If Rojo is a panic buy, wtf is Balo then? I would never want him close to United...

Suarez much worse than Balotelli? 'Avin a larf? I think Suarez is the most gifted footballer ever that lacks common sense, but put it into perspective, he's bitten people, other than that his discipline is fairly normal. Maybe he just has cannibalistic tendencies...

The behaviour of Suarez was far worse. Incidents with Balotelli are more frequent but they are mostly silly off field antics rather than biting/racism.

In Cyprus, watching the Ael-Spurs game.
    A few comments:
-Kane has really impressed me with his runs and his shots. Spurs' best player by far. Had a great shot saved by the keeper onto the bar and scored a great goal
-Soldado missed a sitter just in the first half. Looked uninterested most of the game. Scored with a great volley though which shows that he has class
-Townsed was like...err...townsed... always in for a shot and rarely passed the ball
-Bentaleb looked very composed. Attempted a few shots also. Should start every week imo
-Vert out of shape and clearly needs time before he becomes a regular starter. He faced problems against players of a much weaker team than the ones in EPL
-Bavies spent most of the game outside Ael'd area. Made good runs and crosses. Much better than Rose imo
-Lamela played a few minutes but managed to miss two great chances... i believe his time will come...

My obvious options are Rooney or Fabregas? Or could take a risk and go with Dzeko? Or could play it safe with Terry - you'd think he's guaranteed points?

Balo is actually a cool guy and with the environment at liverpool he won't be that naughty. Rodgers is very good with man management. It only becomes a problem if you have too many menaces in the squad, if it's just one then it is fine. The group will influence the mood rather than 1 person.

Look. Man management is a major factor with players like Suarez and the Bal-meister.

Rodgers deserves the chance to coax the best out of his new maverick before we all start slating him.

No one can argue that he is not a top notch forward on his day, and that most of the time he is performing within himself. If Rodgers unleashes his full potential we could be looking at bargain of the season.

If not, at £16m they won't take much of a hit because some other manager will think they have what it takes to unlock the Balobeast within.

The Balotelli meltdown on here is hilarious. Like Suarez, if he doesn't play for your club, you're bound to hate him. That being said, some of the comments on here are just bizzare. Panic buy? Panic buys - Caroll 35m, Fellaini 27.5m. Borini will probably leave for 14m and Balo will sign for 16m. It's obviously a risk but economically, it's not the worst thing ever. Panic buy..haha.

bringing a player with that kind of reputation to your club is something that should never be referred to as playing it safe to be fair

I dont hate him at all, I just think he's a bit thick. Agreed though, it's not breaking the bank in todays prices and he's pretty entertaining. I'm not sure how he'll fit in at Liverpool though. Might make them a bit unbalanced to accommodate him?

If Giroud is £8.5m and he is better than Balotelli and also playing in a better team than Liverpool, Balotelli realistically should be £8.5m (max).

Ha ha ha, this is the first time I've ever seen anyone say Giroud is 'good'.

He is not great, no; nor is Balotelli. However, I would rather have Giroud than Balotelli.

Wtf? Balotelli would score more goals then Giroud with both his eyes closed.

Giroud better than Balotelli? Don't know if I would agree with that. Giroud is more dependable in the sence that you don't expect him to just disappear for weeks at a time, but I'd argue that Balotelli is the better player. He definitely has the skill to pull off the spectacular and drag teams to a win but I couldn't see Giroud doing that. Balotelli's main question makr is his attitude.

Giroud: 27 goals in 71 league games for Arsenal
Balotelli: 26 goals in 43 league games for Milan

        Arsenal 4th, Liverpool 2nd

Now you're comparing serie A to premier league and a Liverpool team that couldn't get through 2 rounds in the cup competition s and had no Europe to ARSENAL? don't agree wit him but that's a ridiculous comparison

Serie A is weaker but I'm comparing Balotelli in a Milan side good/bad enough to finish 3rd and 8th in Italy with Giroud in an Arsenal side that finished 4th and 4th in the PL.

Fair enough on the Arsenal/Liverpool point.
