Captain Sensible – Gameweek 2

Our Friday regular arrives as the minutes tick down until tomorrow’s deadline. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea dominate this week’s poll, with three of their players populating the top-four places ahead of a home encounter against promoted Leicester. Diego Costa leads the way with over 50% of the votes cast after he netted on his debut away to Burnley on Monday evening – the Spain international scored 18 of his 27 goals for Atletico Madrid at home last year and clearly offers a stronger option in front of his own fans.

Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard trail in Costa’s wake, with 14% and 6% respectively. The Spaniard’s 11-point haul at Turf Moor showed that, even when fielded in the Blues’ double-pivot, he has the ability to wreak havoc, while Hazard’s owners will be looking for the Belgian to replicate last season’s displays at the Bridge, where the Belgian scored 10 of his 14 league goals. Certainly, his owners will be looking for an improved display in the final third – Hazard, along with Fabregas, failed to register a single attempt against The Clarets.

One of the few Fantasy successes in United’s home defeat by Swansea, Wayne Rooney has been backed with the armband by 8%  ahead of a testing trip to Sunderland. With Robin van Persie reportedly set to feature at the Stadium of Light, though, Rooney’s 48% popularity in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may be set for a drop as managers consider the 3%-owned Dutchman, who is likely to be handed spot-kicks by Louis van Gaal.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, Aaron Ramsey and Raheem Sterling are all fancied to continue the form that served up a goal apiece in the opening weekend. Certainly, Sigurdsson looks the most promising of the bunch here as he prepares for a home encounter with Burnley – having averaged 5.7 points per game in his first spell with Swansea, a role in “the hole” looks vital to his prospects. Ramsey and Sterling face tougher tasks, though – trips to Everton and City are far from certain to bring home the points.

Sigurdsson’s team-mate Wilfried Bony has been overlooked. The Ivorian netted 13 times in his final 18 appearances of 2013/14 yet has so far received a mere 62 votes, whilst Sergio Aguero, as the most popular City option, has so far earned less than 1% of the votes cast and looks another differential armband option capable of delivering in style.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Is that deliberate tactic gaz? Only 1 week worth of info to assess who you really want in your squad

Yes. You can also say that 1 week is infinitely more than 0 weeks. Usually pre-season serves more to confuse then educate, and there is so much to be learnt from that first GW (the way I see it anyway), so I like to just clean out all the trash immediately.

Agree GW2 is normally when you find yourself furthest away from your desired squad and find out who is ahead in the pecking order though i prefer to ride out the chaos till i have a few weeks data to draw from and then make the switch

Each to their own, not heard anyone recommend that tactic before hence why intigued.

Knowing when your team is bad is an important skill in FPL imo. Usually that's after my GW1s.

I guess it all depends on how many points you think the WC is worth? I'm sure that has been debated here before, but I think that you can maybe take a hit each week over the first 3 weeks and transform your squad to something more like you want - 6 transfers over 3 weeks would cost 12 points obviously (or less if you don't need to make that many changes) and you'd still have your WC to take advantage of a future DGW (or change in fixtures etc), where you'd think it would net you more than 12 points more than not using it. And if you really need to make changes quicker you could always take more than a -4 hit in a given GW, but I think a few hits in the early weeks to fix your squad and grab a rise in TV while saving your WC is a viable alternative?

Sure, that is also a viable strategy. But I prefer the WC. It's become a tradition of sorts 🙂

He's currently injured, but also very good. Very healthy competition among the centre backs now.

But Pochettino buying Dier and immediately playing him 90 minutes gives me the feeling he's his favorite.

            @Alan

First off, I'm Canadian & we've got the queen on our money, so bite your tongue.

Following that, neither abbreviation is correct or incorrect.
You may hear arguments for one being superior to the other, and there are logical cases for both sides.
One could argue maths is better because mathematics ends in s, and one could argue math is better because mathematics is just a mass noun that happens to end in s.
In any case, English usage is rarely guided by logic, and these usage idiosyncrasies are often arbitrary.
If you were raised in a part of the world where people say maths, then maths is correct for you, and the same is of course true of math.
Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise.

or should i only do Stur --> bony/pelle

Logic: i will have to remove both sooner or later as ballotelli will most likely diminish sturidge and henderson will be deeper in diamond... so might as well do it this week during tough fixture...

False. I think that this is the year of the big scoring mids. With as advanced as some of the "mids" are playing, in many cases they are acting as almost traditional forward wingers. And with many center strikers dropping deep, I think that the trend of points is definitely toward those categorized as midfielders...

So this is the current set-up:

    Lloris
    Chester NTaylor Jones
    Sigurdsson Cabella Ramsey Mata Hazard
    Rooney Riviere

    Bench: Ideye van Aanholt Moore

    Couple of quick questions:

    1) Any sense in replacing either NTaylor or Jone with van Aanholt?
    2) Any sense in replacing Ideye for anyone else?
    3) Common sense would seem to indicate that I should captain either Rooney, Sigurdsson, or Hazard. At the moment I've got Hazard (C), and Sigurdsson (V). I've got that right, no?

Thanks for your help, and I'll chime in on any questions that come up (for what it might be worth)...

That said (C) decision is another matter. Anyone concerned on the way CHE parked the bus after they went up on Burnley 3-1? They showed no interest in piling on goals during the second half. That said, does it worry you to give the armband to a CHE player thinking that they might be unlikely to run up the score thus decreasing the probability of a massive haul?
