Captain Sensible – Gameweek 2

Our Friday regular arrives as the minutes tick down until tomorrow’s deadline. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea dominate this week’s poll, with three of their players populating the top-four places ahead of a home encounter against promoted Leicester. Diego Costa leads the way with over 50% of the votes cast after he netted on his debut away to Burnley on Monday evening – the Spain international scored 18 of his 27 goals for Atletico Madrid at home last year and clearly offers a stronger option in front of his own fans.

Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard trail in Costa’s wake, with 14% and 6% respectively. The Spaniard’s 11-point haul at Turf Moor showed that, even when fielded in the Blues’ double-pivot, he has the ability to wreak havoc, while Hazard’s owners will be looking for the Belgian to replicate last season’s displays at the Bridge, where the Belgian scored 10 of his 14 league goals. Certainly, his owners will be looking for an improved display in the final third – Hazard, along with Fabregas, failed to register a single attempt against The Clarets.

One of the few Fantasy successes in United’s home defeat by Swansea, Wayne Rooney has been backed with the armband by 8%  ahead of a testing trip to Sunderland. With Robin van Persie reportedly set to feature at the Stadium of Light, though, Rooney’s 48% popularity in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may be set for a drop as managers consider the 3%-owned Dutchman, who is likely to be handed spot-kicks by Louis van Gaal.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, Aaron Ramsey and Raheem Sterling are all fancied to continue the form that served up a goal apiece in the opening weekend. Certainly, Sigurdsson looks the most promising of the bunch here as he prepares for a home encounter with Burnley – having averaged 5.7 points per game in his first spell with Swansea, a role in “the hole” looks vital to his prospects. Ramsey and Sterling face tougher tasks, though – trips to Everton and City are far from certain to bring home the points.

Sigurdsson’s team-mate Wilfried Bony has been overlooked. The Ivorian netted 13 times in his final 18 appearances of 2013/14 yet has so far received a mere 62 votes, whilst Sergio Aguero, as the most popular City option, has so far earned less than 1% of the votes cast and looks another differential armband option capable of delivering in style.

Achilles is one of the tougher injuries to recover from.

Even when he *returns* expect him to be eased into the team.

Although, at £8mil & with AVL's kinder second half schedule he looks like one to keep an eye on...

Anyone else concerned Rooney might play in central midfield? Herrera, Fellaini, Carrick all out. RVP in.

These slow price rises look ominous. Drops seem to be going as fast as ever, but rises much slower. Typically week 1 sees a LOT of rises because everyone is active. We can usually expect this to tail off as more teams become inactive.

If that happens, we are going to end up with very low team values. Saying that, they could change the algorithm through the season I guess, and also this will prevent players rising crazily like Ramsey last year, although you could argue he simply rose to a reasonable price for his output.

Yeah a bit of a convoluted post!

I, personally, am a fan of the slow price rises. I think that it rewards patience and rationality rather than knee-jerking. I know that people love building team value, but I'd much rather not have to deal with the unneeded stress of trying to decide if I should bring someone in simply because of the amount of cash I might be able to harvest from him later...

Fair enough. I think that what I was trying to indicate with the connection between building team value and knee-jerking is that the needing to obsess over price raises for the sake of team value pushes one toward knee-jerking in the sense that past performance is indicative of future success.

Of course, I guess you could argue that for true "team value builders" what happens the weekend after you pick up someone as far as points are concerned is really secondary to the amount of money that you have made that could possibly be reinvested at a later point...

I talking about in terms of achieving the highest tps score possible. I could go back to Mata after Fab's home game against Lei if I want to with .2 profit in the bag. It's a big of a gamble but Fab's next three fixtures are not so bad either

Nothing's changed from last year mate.

      Look how quickly Sigurdsson rose...

Issue this week was *all* the high ownership / heavy hitters scored so little movement happened.

I think it has changed, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

The reason I think it has is totalfpl had SIG at 200%. When he didn't rise, I think they adjusted their algorithm accordingly. If that's true, it means you need significantly more transfers in for a second price rise.

          These sites aren't *science*.

I can recall several times last year when a player rose / dropped & TotalFPL &/or Fiso missed it.

The Sigurdsson one is just causing such a stir b/c it happened right off the bat.

              Last year:

              Chelsea double game week

Manchester City scores 4 or 5 v. Newcastle

              Koscielny gets a red card

              Benteke scores v. Arsenal

              Mata gets benched

              Oscar is outscoring Hazard

              Etc, etc, etc...

*Nothing* went to plan last year & outside of Sigurdsson, everything's gone pretty much the way we expected this year.

They've increased the thresholds for 2nd and 3rd rises in a week which will slow the speed of bandwagons rising but make less difference to the gradual risers. Not sure if price drops have changed

I'm don't think the drops are as fast as you suggest, Scored... I'm surprised Mata took this long to drop tbh...

And I kinda like how Siggy has struggled for 0.3 rise, it means we won't be forced to jump on every bandwagon just to keep up with the rising prices... more time to think...

I'd wait until the end of play on Saturday and reassess the situation...which might indicate to a greater degree whether or not the first weeks points from both was an anomaly or a coming trend...

He is a doubt but predicted to play in team news section. Worst case is he has a cameo but i find that is rare with defenders. If he does not play then will default to wanyama anyway

    a) Rooney - worried him playing CM

    b) Fabregas - worried by his lack of goal threat

    c) Siggy - worried his GW 1 was a fluke

    d) Bojan - no worries

I'd say not good as a prospect. With Berahino lighting it up last GW and Ideye coming into the mix this GW, I really can't see him adding much to the mix other than competition for Anichebe.

Berahino is the competition I would say, the WB manager said he haven't even heard about Ideye before...I don't think he rates him much..Samars can play as a CAM as well?

He'd better rate him given the fact that West Brom broke their transfer record to get him. There is no way that Ideye stays on the bench...or plays anything other than center forward from here on out.

5.0 in FPL. .6 more for Berahino and 1.0 more for Ideye (with both more than justifying the small price differences).

            Quite risky...

            Young & Sturridge -> Tadic & Bony (4 points)

            Banked 1m also.

Tadic v Eriksen was a very close one
