Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – McGeady at the Double

Aiden McGeady scores twice as the Republic of Ireland edge past Georgia. Theo Walcott is closing in on a return to action for Arsenal. Jordan Henderson is a doubt for England’s clash with Switzerland, Aleksandar Kolarov nets for Serbia, whilst West Ham’s new boy Enner Valencia also gets amongst the goals for Ecuador.

McGeady at the Double

The Everton wide man scored both goals for the Republic of Ireland in a 2-1 triumph over Georgia yesterday, while team-mates James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman picked up an assist apiece.

The Scout Says: McGeady’s display bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting role for the Toffees’ trip to West Brom next weekend. With Steven Pienaar sidelined due to a groin problem at home to Chelsea, McGeady returned to the first XI and picked up an assist in the 6-3 defeat – with a goal and assist over his two league starts so far, then, he’s been one of the Merseysiders’ most impressive performers thus far. If the South African remains sidelined for a prolonged period, the Republic of Ireland star could be handed greater pitch time by Roberto Martinez as Everton go in search of their first win of the season.

Walcott On Course for Return

Reports suggest the Gunners winger could be poised to return to action for the Gameweek 6 home encounter with Spurs on September 27.

The Scout Says: Sidelined since early January with a knee injury, Walcott’s loss was sorely felt by Arsene Wenger and Fantasy managers alike. The wide man grabbed five goals and four assists in just nine starts last term but, as we saw earlier in the 2013/14, the Gunners boss tends to ease Walcott into action with a series of sub appearances as he builds up his fitness. The same scenario looks likely – all the more so given that Wenger has the likes of Alexis Sanchez to field on the right until Walcott is fully fit, but there’s no doubt that once he’s up to scratch, he could be a major differential over the autumn. With the schedule turning kind for Arsenal from Gameweek 8 onwards, Walcott could offer an alternative to Aaron Ramsey or even a double-up option with the Welshman for our five-man midfields.

Valencia in the Goals

West Ham’s summer signing played 76 minutes of Ecuador’s 4-0 win over Bolivia yesterday and fired his side’s third goal before making way.

The Scout Says: Valencia has been eased into action by Sam Allardyce after a late start to pre-season training as a result of his World Cup duties. A couple of late sub appearances over the last couple of league matches has ensured he remains off our radars for now, though as his fitness builds up, it’s surely just a matter of time before he replaces Carlton Cole as the Hammers’ lone forward. With Liverpool, United and City in the next six, though, few Fantasy managers will be looking to the Upton Park outfit as a source of investment right now.

Kolarov Nets in Serbia Draw

The enigmatic City left-back reminded us all of his capabilities last night by firing home a 30-yard free-kick in Serbia’s 1-1 home stalemate with France.

The Scout Says: This is just typical of Kolarov. We handed him a place in the Scout Picks as City entertained Stoke last time around and he brought home just two points after the champions stumbled to a 1-0 home defeat. Tellingly, he was dropped for the Gameweek 2 clash against Liverpool, highlighting Manuel Pellegrini’s tendency to pick the defensively-minded Gael Clichy against trickier opponents – given that City square up to Arsenal and Chelsea in the next two, the Serbian may have to make do with bench-warming duties in spite of last night’s strike.

Henderson Concern for Reds

Reports suggest the Liverpool midfielder is a doubt for England’s match with Switzerland this evening after picking up an ankle problem in training.

The Scout Says: With question marks also surrounding the availability of Daniel Sturridge, it’s been an eventful international break for Brendan Rodgers. One of the first names on the Liverpool team sheet, Henderson missed only three matches last season as a result of suspension, and despite the fixtures coming thick and fast, his guaranteed pitch time means he looks immune to rotation. A possible period on the sidelines could allow Adam Lallana a route into the Reds’ first XI ahead of four favourable home matches in the next six, though with two assists in the first Gameweeks, Henderson’s 15% of Fantasy Premier League owners will be hoping he can quickly recover.

Colo will probably outscore PvA on BPS, but PvA will get more attacking returns. Don't think it will make a big difference over the season. B to protect you against Pants getting a look in at some point?

Liverpool Echo claim Sturridge is out for Villa but in contention for Ludogorets, if not he'll be fine for the following game.

I think that'll be the case with Henderson not Sturridge, who is very injury prone. I don't know how others perceive it but I don't think Sturridge is bothered about England

Andy Heaton from the Anfield Wrap has said that there is an outside chance of him playing against Villa and he should be fine for the Ludogorets game, and that the echo are erring on the side of caution.

I don't think he has any chance of playing against Villa, will probably make the bench against Ludogorets then start against West Ham.

    My wildcard team:

    Krul (Elliot)
    Moreno, Ivanovic, PVA, (Duff), (Hutton)
    Ramsey, Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy, (Marney)
    Welbeck, Falcao, Costa

    Good to go?
    My main concerns:
    1) Are my three cheap rotating defenders good enough
    2) Is Falcao / Welbeck a bit too early?

Sorry to dump a RMT (and a Champions league RMT no less), but I can't see the RMT article. Anyway.. I'm in a private draft league, I was away in Croatia for the draft, but this is what I got >>>

    Moya
    Carvajal, Godin, Cahill, Marcelo
    Iniesta, Koke, Rakitic,
    Sturridge, Mandzukic, Benzema

My football knowledge doesn't really stretch past the PL. Thoughts on this bunch are appreciated.

You need at least one of Ronaldo,Messi,Ibra and Lewa. Preferably two and then take it from there.

Iniessta and Rakitic are not mush of a fantasy option.

You also need a strong bench as manager subs are an important part of the game.

Sorry, to clarify. There is no subs, just the starting 11 and, unfortunately, I was down the pecking order, so missed out on Ronaldo, Messi etc. Do you know whether Marcelo starts? Will he play CL?

I play Draft EPL fantasy and have extensive knowledge of wider European leagues. I'd say for someone who didn't pick his own team that's a pretty solid bunch. All essential starters for their clubs barring injury (o ridiculously poor form). Marcelo may be prone to the occasional Coentrao rotation but there is talk about Ancelotti considering moving him up to midfield as a direct replacement for Di Maria from time to time. What are some of the more familiar names available in the remaining pool of players?

Thanks for the reply, this is all gold! Glad to know they all start.

Some of the players remaining include: Modric, Gabi, Azpilicueta, Mkhitaryan, Dzeko, Jovetic, Marquinhos, Rafinha ?

There could be other players, but those ones stick out. I'm happy with my strikers, but think Iniesta might be a bit past it and I'm just hoping Rakitic isn't overshadowed by Barca's embarrassment of riches. Thanks again.

Star players in otherwise crappy teams that I might be able to persuade a trade for include: Ibrahimovic and Reus.

Mkhitaryan would be worthwhile swap for iniesta if you weren't looking to double up with barcelona players in midfield. You have double ups in defence with the two madrid teams but you shouldn't be too concerned since they're favourites in their groups (and juventus aren't a high scoring team). The rest wouldn't be up to scratch. If you could trade Sturridge for Ibra your team would be complete. (Sturridge unproven in europe still, Ibra is and he plays against two former clubs in his group and not as injury prone.) Reus, if he's classified as a midfielder would be boss however he's just been confirmed to be injured for a month so that's already at least 2 CL games he's out for.

Pellegrini is very honest about injuries. So I guess we'll have full info before deadline.

But I really think that these are all phantom injuries happening to only players in the CL. These guys have 3 games to play next week, so I can see the connection.

Since I'm already on a -8 and currently ranked 315K, should I just wildcard this team:

      Krul, Gilks,
      Terry, Clyne, PVA, Wisdom, Moore,
      Sigurdsson, Fabregas, Sterling, Ramsey, Marney,
      Rooney, Costa, Naismith.

      £4.0m in the bank.

      To this:

      Krul, MANNONE,
      IVANOVIC, Clyne, MORENO, HUTTON, Wisdom,
      Sigurdsson, Fabregas, Sterling, Ramsey, Marney,
      AGUERO, Costa, Naismith.

      £0.1m in the bank.

Will be an additional 20 pt. hit, bringing the total to -28, so the wildcard would wipe it all out. Or I could do Mannone, Aguero, Naismith to Elliot, Falcao, Welbeck. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. A lot of people are using their wildcards, so I see no reason to save mine for a future double Gameweek which may or may not happen and which will only give me a couple more DGW players than others. I think a wildcard should be used when you most need it, and since I've already sacrificed 8 points to get key players in I see this as an opportunity to make wholesale changes to my team once and for all and wipe out the hit.

Best way to accommodate Welbeck in my team:

        a) Krul, one 4.0 defenders
        b) Begovic, two 4.0 defenders

Stoke clearly have better fixtures than Newcastle, and I foresee an upturn in their defensive returns, however is it worth the extra .5 which I may need for attackers?

A, two 4.0 defenders is too many unless the 3 remaining defenders are all from big teams. Especially with Hutton not really being an option given the fixtures.

Other defs would be Ivan Moreno Clyne, I'm not keen on two 4.0s either but would be Duff and either Wisdom or Moore

        Krul / Elliot
        Dier / Bertrand / Duff / Moore / Dummett
        Ramsey / Sterling / Siggy / Haz / Albrighton
        Rooney / Ade / Aguero

Morning All! Only a few days left now until the BPL kicks back into action 🙂

Any advice on what to do with my team would be much appreciated. Only have 1 FT but don't mind taking a 4 point hit if needs be. Or just stick for one more week and do something with 2 FT next week?

        STERLING----SIGGY----FABREGAS----RAMSEY----

        ------COSTA------WELBECK------NAISMITH

Who would you bring in, Di Maria (and make it a 5-man midfield)
        or Falcao instead of Naismith?

The Wild card has been activated! I'm tempted to get Falcao in. That way if he's a dud I have £11m to get in pretty much anyone else instead.

Who would you say is going to get more points over the season, Falcao or Di Maria?

            Cheers

In that case maybe get Falcao in so you can downgrade him to Naismith and then upgrade your 5th mid to ADM or would it work the other way around also?

Very hard to say without seeing them all in action tbh. If the goals are shared out but ADM is assisting them all he could score better than Falcao. Or Falcao could just bag all the goals then he's the one to have.

They are both great players with great history but ideally we need to wait and see how they settle in and how Man U as a team performs as so far they have been terrible.

OK I'll stick with Falcao and then swap them over if Di Maria looks more settled to the EPL.

risk it and bring in falcao. 90% sure that he'll start. and as a striker his range, im sure he ll score atleast one goal for sure.. and since many people dont wanna risk buying him for his first match, i say he ll make a great differential

Costa was supposed to be out for 4-6 weeks and look how that turned out.

Only players(Sturridge,Costa,Jovetic etc) having CL games midweek are getting injured and I see the connection. FWIW it happens every year during the International break and it's nothing new.

P.S. A jovetic injury would really let me do a transfer without worrying about consequences.

        9,5 mil gk combo
        Ivanovic-Clyne-PvA-Colo-Wisdom
        Fabregas-Sterling-Sigurdsson-King-X
        Costa-Aguero-X

I got 14,6 mil to fill in the 2 spots left. I am on my Wildcard, but I have decided what I want my team to look like except the two last spots. There have been few striker for 6-8.5 mil that have impressed so far.
        I am currently thinking about:
        A) Ramsey + Naismith (Having to play a 5,3 striker every week worries me a bit)
        B) Henderson + Adebayor
        C) Welbeck + Tadic

but it would be nice to hear a few other suggestions or your opinion on which option I should go for 🙂

Will keep an eye on Hendo's fitness. Tadic is a punt but great fixtures coming up. Is Ade definitely nailed on? Game time is my only concern with him.

Maybe use 1.3 mill on your defence? Not sure if rotating keepers is wise.

I think Moreno will get more points than Lovren

Chelsea hopeful Diego Costa will be fit to face Swansea on Saturday

        - Spain striker’s injury not connected to previous problems

        - Costa will continued to be assessed by Chelsea this week

Chelsea are cautiously optimistic they will have Diego Costa available for the top of the table meeting with Swansea City when the Premier League campaign resumes on Saturday despite the Spain striker having withdrawn from the squad for his country’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia on Monday evening.

Costa complained of discomfort in his left leg during last week’s friendly defeat to the French at the Stade de France, pain that was apparently not associated with the minor damage sustained in training ahead of the recent win at Everton, and was assessed by the national association’s medical staff. He underwent a scan back in Madrid prior to being released from Vicente del Bosque’s squad, with the results of those tests having since been sent to Chelsea.

The London club have conducted their own examinations since the player returned to Cobham and, while the Brazil-born forward has suffered worrying niggles in his hamstrings over recent months, there is some optimism that this latest twinge is not serious.

He will continue to be assessed over the remainder of the week ahead of the visit of Swansea to Stamford Bridge where at least one of the sides, currently first and second in the fledgling table, will drop their first points of the season. That game is followed by Chelsea’s first Champions League fixture of term, against Schalke on Wednesday.

Falcao in team, feels risky but right...will he start ,will he play, will I be stressed waiting for him to come on if he does not start, The answer is yes... Buttttt I will not change my mind, I will not regret taking a risk. As Saturday draws closer it will be the none Falcao owners that are worried, not I......
Oh yeh I've got costa and kun to worry about as well, onwards and upwards....Role on.
