Scout Report – Toby Alderweireld

Southampton wrapped up their business for the summer by sealing a one-year loan deal for defender Toby Alderweireld from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid during last Monday’s transfer deadline day. Upon completing the transfer, Saints boss Ronald Koeman hailed the quality and top-flight experience of his latest signing:

“I am delighted that we have been able to bring Toby to the club. He is a strong defender, and is also very good at building up the play when we play out from the back. He played in the top league in Spain and against top teams in Europe, so he has a lot of confidence and experience, and he has a big future because he is still young. We needed competition in our squad, and with Toby here we now have a lot of possibilities and quality.”

Alderweireld, meanwhile, admitted he’s keen to work under the Dutchman and stressed his eagerness to kick on in his new surroundings:

“Koeman’s style of play fits me and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a very big step for my career. I had to make the right decision. I think Southampton in this stage of my career is the right step. They are up and coming, a very warm club. It’s something I’ve been searching for and it’s great that I find it here. Now, I want to give something back to the club and do all my best to help the team. It’s nice to hear that he (Koeman) likes my play. He called me and said that he really wants me to come. A trainer that believes in me is really important.”

The History

Tobias Albertine Maurits Alderweireld is yet another product of the indefatigable Ajax youth academy. Having impressed as a youngster, the Belgian earned his first-team debut in the season of 2008/09 during which he went on to make several appearances in the Eredivisie and Europa League. The following campaign, Alderweireld – at the age of just 20 – established himself in Ajax’s starting XI at centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen, and finished the season with the reputed title of ‘Ajax Talent of the Year’.

In the following three seasons, Alderweireld was an integral part of the Ajax side that secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles, scoring five goals in the league and a further five in his side’s Champions League pursuits.

Following his success with the Dutch giants, the young defender moved to Atletico at the start of the 2013/14 season for a €7 million fee. However, game-time proved hard to come by for the Belgian, who made just 12 appearances for his new side as they pipped Barcelona and rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final (in which Alderweireld took to the field for the final stages of extra time).

Having made his senior debut in 2009, Alderweireld now has 37 caps to his name for Belgium’s national side. The most recent of those appearances came in this summer’s World Cup, in which the defender started four of Belgium’s five games, conceding just three goals.

The Prospects

Though last season may have been a disappointment for Alderweireld on a personal level, his move to Southampton should breathe new life into the 25-year-old’s career. The Belgian’s experience on the continent looks set to see him instilled at the hear of the Saints’ back-four alongside Jose Fonte, which should all but ending the game time of Maya Yoshida, who has until now stood out as the only sub-5.0 route into Koeman’s defence.

Although Alderweireld was occasionally used at right back during his years with Ajax, it seems highly unlikely that Nathaniel Clyne’s starting spot will come under threat. Alderweireld has been introduced to the Fantasy Premier League game at a starting price of 5.0, a factor which could propel him up and above the 5.5-priced Fonte in our reckoning if he does, as expected, secure a starting role.

Whilst Clyne’s potential for attacking returns still guarantees his higher place in our Watchlist right now, Alderweireld himself demonstrated a propensity for a stunning strike on a number of occasions during his years at Ajax – a couple of those in the near future for the Saints would see the Belgian’s allure increase immensely.

The defender couldn’t be handed a kinder schedule to settle in to his new surroundings. Southampton are one of only five teams to be handed four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and one look at their schedule (NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO) suggests they have every chance of continuing on from the Gameweek 3 win at West Ham. With a summer of upheaval now over, Koeman will be optimistic that his new-look side can click into gear and Alderweireld’s arrival certainly suggests they’ve made a step in the right direction.

    Haidara:
any Newcastle fans here or from there....who might now w/ certain degree of certainty if its Haidara or Dummet who shall start gw 4? thnx

**Dummet started first 2, Hidara gw 3. In pre-season, from what i recall there was a slight bias towards Haidara being ahead of Dummet and begining of season he was benched due slight knock. Santon out untill nov-dec.

I was incredibly bored so I decided to do some rough work.. Mainly on Arsenal's assets.

    Cesc - Ramsey - Sterling - Walcott - Siggy

    Aguero - Welbeck/Ade - Naismith

Taking budget into account, I tried to come up with a balanced front 8 "covering" last season's top 4 team's best fantasy assets, and I discovered it relied a lot on Arsenal..
Now this is because I don't think they have a clear standout option, whereas other top teams have only 1 or 2 each (Chelsea - Cesc/Costa.. Liverpool - Sterling/Balo... City - Aguero/Silva).

Arsenal have at least 4 picks in their ranks, with Ramsey, Welbeck, Sanchez, Walcott and Ozil all potentially strong fantasy choices.

So who do we leave out?

Ozil.. Out of form or confidence, and shoved out wide more often than not. Maybe if he's moved centrally when Walcott is back but not for now.

Sanchez.. The most expensive, doesn't seem to warrant the extra outlay just yet, but could come back into the mainstream thinking if he connects better with his teammates after time.

Ramsey and Walcott both have cases to suggest that either could be the top points earning 9.0 starting mid by the end of the season. How can you leave them out? How do you choose between them? Walcott can be a monster from midfield and pretty much plays as a striker out wide. Whereas Ramsey reached essential status last year and if he hits those heights again then he could be another must have..

If both of these guys hit form then we'll want them both.

And that's not even mentioning the cheapest of all, Welbeck. Can we afford to miss a bargain like that?

Yep if United hit form and click together then we'll have a real headache on our hands.. This isn't even taking Spurs or Saints into account very much.

i'm worried we might see a reaction to the everton game and a chelsea shutout, but still, siggy's likely to be at the heart of all swansea's attacks and swansea are on very good form themselves. it's a potential bananaskin if some of chelsea's players are still in international mode or recovering from jet lag or nursing niggling injuries (costa, hazard) etcetc. i'd play the sigster.

Hendo has potential, and lots of it, but in a completely different way.

Think of Siggy as a mix between Lampard and Silva.
Think of Hendo as a mix between Gerrard and Ramsey.

Hendo has the fixture, Siggy has the form.

Not 100% clear cut, but I'd go Siggy because I trust form.

hendo is a strange one. sometimes he does look like ramsey, making all these energetic runs into the box and linking up beautifully with those around him, but other times he looks a lot more cautious, even lethargic. i'm not sure if this is due to the instructions he's getting from the coach or what, but i wouldn't want to rely on him just yet. siggy, on the other hand, is more or less a proven beast at this point.

if i wasn't on WC i would, he'll keep scoring points fairly regularly no doubt. i think there are a handful of better options though if you have WC at your disposal (aguero, costa, falcao, sturridge when fit)

i think it depends entirely on context. if you've picked a godawful team for GW1 then wildcarding GW3 is perfectly reasonable. i wildcarded already because my team was spiralling hopelessly in value and i couldn't see it turning around anytime soon, meanwhile my rivals were already in on a number of quality bandwagons i'd missed. i mean, it's my own fault, but i don't regret the wildcard, i just regret the conditions that led to the wildcard 🙁

as a utd fan none of this has been very surprising for me. we've been declining for a few years in reality, and only the sheer belief and ruthlessness under fergie and a bunch of seasoned veterans were keeping us remotely respectable. the problems we have now are problems that have been evolving for a while; ponderous in possession, lightweight in midfield, aging at the back, our best strikers not clicking together, mediocre wide players etc. these issues haven't only just emerged... the miracle is that we won the league 2 seasons ago. we would never have done so if a) all our main rivals weren't in turbulent transitional phases, b) fergie wasn't such an amazing motivator and c) van persie didn't have the midas touch.

of course, now that we've brought in so many quality players you'd perhaps expect an upturn in form (despite the still glaring holes at the back), and i think we will see that in time. the problem is that morale is so terribly low right now it's infecting everyone and everything. i think you'll start to see them grow in confidence once they get a decent win on the board.

Agreed, United are definitely a large step behind the elite teams, but surely you're better than you've been over the first three weeks?

Hopefully, the new signings could be a shot in the arm and QPR at home is a great time for that first decent win.

i have krul and janmaat, but just having one or the other is fine too. only caulker and ivanovic have more attempts from inside the box than janmaat, and newcastle have some decent (if not amazing) fixtures, that's why i'm going with him. think he could be a very nice differential.

                3) caulker (tons of attacking potential but extremely unreliable defensively)
                4) kaboul (jury's still out on spurs defensively, and no real attacking potential)
                5) ward (goodbye pulis, goodbye ward.. although fixtures are pretty good tbf)
                6) pieters (no point while wilson's nailed on. could be rotation risk too? great fixtures though)

mercy. you have got to reasses this 🙂 no chance in this world pieters is 6. hes a very good LFB, much like Blind. he played well whike in Holland. and u get the resilient Stoke defence + hes got bonus ponteial. same thing can be said of janmaat as going for cheaper NEW DEf in colo or haidara. I am in doubt in btn janmaat and pietters. no risk for rotation, wilson has risk rotation.

Clyne i must confess have not seen him much, last yr he was not as explosive, not sure he is being overhyped ahead of janmaat or ieters.

caulker, not sure QPR can hold cs. u still high on him though?

Kaboul, yes no offence, but you get the binus potential + looks solid w/ vert, and rest of defence for CS

                  was thinking:5,2,3,1,4,6

ha, well i suspect pieters will outscore some of the others over the next few weeks-- my point was, wilson probably will too and he's 0.5 cheaper, which makes pieters redundant. if pieters was the cheapest stoke defender i'd definitely reassess. :p

also: pieters was a risk to be rotated with muniesa at the start of the season, i'm not sure that risk has entirely evaporated yet. no moreso than the wilson/huth risk, anyways.

caulker just has huge potential for scoring from set pieces. the clean sheets will probably be few and far between. clyne seems like he can get reasonably regular points from both clean sheets and goals/assists and that's quite a rare commodity for a 5.0. his stats are generally good even if his points hauls sometimes disappoint. we'll see! i quite like how this southampton side is shaping up, let's not forget they've just bought quite a big defensive star in alderweireld.

if poch can get spurs defending like his southampton team, kaboul could become coveted very quickly.

completely depends on the state of your team. i wildcarded 'cause mine was abysmal, but it's always best to save your WC unless you're really starting to feel like you're getting left behind.

i still rate rooney very highly as an fpl prospect, i don't really understand the mass exodus. even if he drops into attacking midfield he's still gonna be a menace, his record over the past couple of seasons is outstanding despite all this talk of some kind of torres-esque decline. and if he can click with the world class likes of di maria and falcao, he could soon become better than ever. plus he's the utd captain so he's not going to be dropped.

you reckon its Haidara or Dummet nailed for that LFB for new? santon out til nov dec, and preseason it looked like haidara ahead of santon. played gw 3 whereas dummet gw 1&2. haidara benched 1st 2 i think due to slight knowck.

also pva, youre high on sun able to keep any CS? pva does attack well also.

well I'm sure Bruce is working on coverting him into a left-footer. More than anything, it must be a problem in training for their goalkeepers, facing a series of quality left-footed shots and then Sagbo and Jelavic shank them wide - not ideal practice as the majority of shots which will come from a right-footer in games

I think that is a tricky one. Yes he is a great option. He has just come off of a good game for England and should be the focal point for Arsenal. But he has 4 weeks of tough fixtures. If I was to have him I wouldn't want any other Arsenal one is enough of a risk for these ones.

I'd say he'll definitely score more points, but the bigger question is whether he and a budget midfielder (Zaha, JWP etc.) are better than Naismith and a midfielder in the Sterling/Eriksen/Tadic price range.

5 Yellow Flags in my team and I'm in serious trouble this week.

      Krul
      Cahill Chester Jones(D)
      Lamela Haz(D) Siggy Ramsey(D)
      Costa (D) Rooney Naismith

      Bench: Moore Hendo Taylor

2 FT 0.9m in the bank

That's smth I haven't thought off. After going the whole of last season without ramsey (till the final 2 games) a part of me is scared to let him depart my team. In your opinion do you think Jones Hazard Ramsey and Costa would play? I can't afford to wait for the pressers as I would be overseas and would have limited internet connection.

I don't think Schneiderlin is worth his price tag. Maybe I'm wrong and his brace is a sign of things to come, but I think it's more likely he scores 2 more goals total over the rest of the season.

Dyer over Siggy is interesting, can't say I'd have the guts to do it.

I like Hazard/Lamela/Mirallas trifecta, very diffrentialy, and the strike force is also potentially deadly.
