Scout Report – Toby Alderweireld

Southampton wrapped up their business for the summer by sealing a one-year loan deal for defender Toby Alderweireld from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid during last Monday’s transfer deadline day. Upon completing the transfer, Saints boss Ronald Koeman hailed the quality and top-flight experience of his latest signing:

“I am delighted that we have been able to bring Toby to the club. He is a strong defender, and is also very good at building up the play when we play out from the back. He played in the top league in Spain and against top teams in Europe, so he has a lot of confidence and experience, and he has a big future because he is still young. We needed competition in our squad, and with Toby here we now have a lot of possibilities and quality.”

Alderweireld, meanwhile, admitted he’s keen to work under the Dutchman and stressed his eagerness to kick on in his new surroundings:

“Koeman’s style of play fits me and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a very big step for my career. I had to make the right decision. I think Southampton in this stage of my career is the right step. They are up and coming, a very warm club. It’s something I’ve been searching for and it’s great that I find it here. Now, I want to give something back to the club and do all my best to help the team. It’s nice to hear that he (Koeman) likes my play. He called me and said that he really wants me to come. A trainer that believes in me is really important.”

The History

Tobias Albertine Maurits Alderweireld is yet another product of the indefatigable Ajax youth academy. Having impressed as a youngster, the Belgian earned his first-team debut in the season of 2008/09 during which he went on to make several appearances in the Eredivisie and Europa League. The following campaign, Alderweireld – at the age of just 20 – established himself in Ajax’s starting XI at centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen, and finished the season with the reputed title of ‘Ajax Talent of the Year’.

In the following three seasons, Alderweireld was an integral part of the Ajax side that secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles, scoring five goals in the league and a further five in his side’s Champions League pursuits.

Following his success with the Dutch giants, the young defender moved to Atletico at the start of the 2013/14 season for a €7 million fee. However, game-time proved hard to come by for the Belgian, who made just 12 appearances for his new side as they pipped Barcelona and rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final (in which Alderweireld took to the field for the final stages of extra time).

Having made his senior debut in 2009, Alderweireld now has 37 caps to his name for Belgium’s national side. The most recent of those appearances came in this summer’s World Cup, in which the defender started four of Belgium’s five games, conceding just three goals.

The Prospects

Though last season may have been a disappointment for Alderweireld on a personal level, his move to Southampton should breathe new life into the 25-year-old’s career. The Belgian’s experience on the continent looks set to see him instilled at the hear of the Saints’ back-four alongside Jose Fonte, which should all but ending the game time of Maya Yoshida, who has until now stood out as the only sub-5.0 route into Koeman’s defence.

Although Alderweireld was occasionally used at right back during his years with Ajax, it seems highly unlikely that Nathaniel Clyne’s starting spot will come under threat. Alderweireld has been introduced to the Fantasy Premier League game at a starting price of 5.0, a factor which could propel him up and above the 5.5-priced Fonte in our reckoning if he does, as expected, secure a starting role.

Whilst Clyne’s potential for attacking returns still guarantees his higher place in our Watchlist right now, Alderweireld himself demonstrated a propensity for a stunning strike on a number of occasions during his years at Ajax – a couple of those in the near future for the Saints would see the Belgian’s allure increase immensely.

The defender couldn’t be handed a kinder schedule to settle in to his new surroundings. Southampton are one of only five teams to be handed four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and one look at their schedule (NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO) suggests they have every chance of continuing on from the Gameweek 3 win at West Ham. With a summer of upheaval now over, Koeman will be optimistic that his new-look side can click into gear and Alderweireld’s arrival certainly suggests they’ve made a step in the right direction.

          Aguero only has 8% ownership. Welbeck less than 3% I believe. Chadli and McGeady are good differentials.

      It's hard enough to find one person on here who owns even one of Chadli or McGeady. Zero chance of finding anybody with both.

      So there's your differential

        1. Im tempted to get welbeck. But isnt costa falcao welbeck too risky?

    Please rate my wildcard team:

    Bego/4m

    Moreno/Bertrand/Taylor/Duff/Wisdom

    Hazard/Sterling/Tadic/Siggy/Boyd

    Costa/Falcao/Balotelli

    Plan would be by gameweek 8 Bertrand Tadic and Falcao would become Baines Ramsey/Walcott and Welbeck.

    cheers

      Duff's not nailed on bud. Moore looks like a better bet.

      Just a suggestion, but I think Mirallas is a better option than Tadic. Tadic could do just as well or better though!

    Hi all some advice please...
    My team is..

    Begovic--Krul
    Debuchy --Wisdom.--cahill --PVA.--Caulker
    sterling--sanchez--Eriksen --fabregas--Marney
    Rooney--jovetic--Bojan

    I'm very reluctant to wild card so these are some options that have to involve a hit

    A. Bojan Eriksen > Tadic Naismith -4
    B. Sanchez jovetic > Di Maria welbeck -4
    C. Sanchez Bojan and jovetic > Di Maria welbeck Naismith -8
    D. Bite the bullet and go Sanchez Bojan jovetic & Caulker > Di Maria welbeck Naismith lovren -12
    Thanks

      Jovetic and Bojan out is what I'd reccomend.

      Keep Sanchez and Eriksen if you ask me. Ditch Sanchez for a hit if you must.

      I'd suggest Mirallas, Naismith and Balotelli/Welbeck as replacements.

      Unfortunately no money in bank otherwise straight swap for Bojan to Naismith. Annoying haha.
      I know arsenal haven't got the best fixtures but welbeck as main striker for cheap plus it allows me to strengthen overall and possibly save a transfer next week.
      Any chance Bojan could start? Stokes fixtures are decent...

      IMO and a few including yourself may disagree but if u feel that a wc will drastically improve your team and rank then it can definately be worth it especially since ur team may take a few hits and weeks to sort out...

      Sanchez, Bojan, Jovetic, caulker, Cahill, debauchy and possibly erikson I he doesn't register points this weeken are all dodgy with fixtures etc etc

          Make like Nike and just do it (wc that is) too many hits to get in players who aren't guaranteed points and therefore if they don't panic sets in and more minuses are on the way!

            So tempting...Who would you recommend then? If I take my big hit transfers and want 2 weeks thereafter to have 2 free it's perfect timing to get city players in...

              The tough one is who to get for Sanchez as Ramsey could be injured (doubt it though) but maybe for di Maria saves you 1.0 otherwise...

              Debauchy-> Moreno
              Caulker->Naylor
              Cahill-> Ivanovic
              Bojan-> Naismith/Welbeck
              Jovetic-> Costa (should be fit)
              Rooney-> falcao but you can wait a week for that or just get aguero who I can really see scoring at least 1 against arsenal

    Guys can i have a RMT please?

    Lloris Myhill

    Wisdom Moore Janmaat Moreno Ivanovic

    Dyer Sterling Blind Hazard Mirallas

    Balotelli Costa Welbeck

    Is it risky not having Siggy and Ramsey?

    Thanks

      I wouldn't get Blind, classified as a midfielder. Downgrade him and you can afford to get Siggy for Dyer. Rest looks good.

      Get rid of Dyer and Blind and get in Siggy and Boyd

    Begovic
    Clyne Moreno Jamnaat
    Sterling Cesc Di Maria Siggz
    Costa Rooney Welbeck

    Gilks Hutton Boyd Wilson

      More attacking United-players than attacking players from Liverpool, City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton.. exactly nothing United have shown so far this season would suggest that would be a good idea..

        Ramsey has tough fixtures .and possibly and niggle
        Silva has been very average.
        I have Sterling as I think no one else from Liverpool is worth is plus studge is injured.
        Had Eriksen but he is a flop ..
        Don't want Everton mids.

        Di Maria ran the world champs ragged and will do the damage imo. Di Maria and Rooney ahead of all the rest of the donkeys imo.

    Hey guys,

    I'm on my WC and can't decide on my last midfielder.

    A. Gerrard
    B. Mirallas
    C. Tadic

    The rest of my midfield is Siggy, ADM, Sterling Marney.
    I've been looking at the stats/form and tbh honest all 3 look great..

    I'm on Gerrard so far due to spot kicks but might he be rested with europe duties? Tadic seems safest bet regarding game time but is he as explosive? Mirallas looked great last game but I keep bad memories from last season...

    Any help/ additionnal insight would be greatly appreciated..!

        Nah, I don't like Cesc, I believe he will be disappointing from here on.
        Silva is nice but I allready have Aguero and with those fixtures I pref not to double up..

    On a wild card this week. I'm kind of glad with so many injury doubts.
    But with so much uncertainty with players with yellow i on them . which players would you still put in?

    Ramsey? Costa?
    Take risks on - Baliotelli, Falcao, Welbeck, Zaha, Mirralas?

    Stay safe - Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy, Ivanovic, Clyne, Rooney?

      Why not mix your 2 option? That way if you have a safety if some risks don't work out. The second option is good but that's everyone's team plus minus but at the moment is probably the best team...

    Scout picks community champion ballot box. Below are the differences in the top two candidates with the corresponding vote link. Make an informed choice in who you vote for.

    Remember the community champion can still change these scout picks closer to the GW deadline, so these picks aren't necessarily set in stone. Like most politicians, they don't always keep their promises 😉

    ARVIN-ATION
