The Big Numbers – Gameweek 1-3 – Forwards

The final instalment in our series of Big Numbers articles focussing on Gameweeks 1-3 is rolled out this evening. After assessing the fortunes of defenders and midfielders, we now turn our attentions to the men up front – Chelsea and Southampton’s summer signings come under assessment, as do Everton’s in-form budget striker and the contrasting fortunes of a pair of Manchester-based front men.

    Taking into account the rate of risers/fallers this season, I'm makin' it rain up in hur.

    Have Welbeck on wildcard, Going to be hard to drop him now hes risen in price, was going to keep naismith for a few weeks

      He's a much better option than Naismith.

        Yeah but Naismith is a sub player anyway, 352 etc. So really you'd need to compare Welbeck to a starting 5th mid.

          And compare Naismith to a 5th mid sub like Marney.

            You can't compare him to Marney because inevitably your 5th mid in a 352 will be worse than your 4th mid and Welbeck would be in a 343. Should be anyway.

              To compare 343 vs 352 you must consider this example

              Naismith + mid priced mid (Tadic, Mirrales, Chadlii, Hendo etc)

              Welbeck + budget mid (Marney, Zaha etc)

                I currently have-
                Fabregas/Hazard/Siggy/Sterling/RAMSEY
                Costa/Rooney/Naismith

                Welbeck gives-

                Fabregas/Hazard/Siggy/Sterling/ 7.8 MIDFIELDER
                Costa/Rooney/WELBECK

                There just seems little value in that Tadic/Miralles range at the moment.

                (dont ask about the triple Chelsea! Fab to Silva in a couple of weeks)

                  Thats impressive but I'm guessing you're making sacrifices in your defence a wee bit. I'd also argue that you might want to play Naismith on occasion but I guess you could start him ahead of Siggy this week, however there wouldn't be many other occasions where I'd want to bench Siggy.

                It's still not a good comparison because the budget mid will never play.

                But what's interesting about that example is that I don't rate any of those mid priced options ahead of Zaha or JWP. Very good case for 343, that.

                  Yeah, if the 7.8 in my example is say Zaha then Rooney easy to Falcao/Aguero

                  Budget mids do play, having the flexibility of a playable 5th mid is important if you get annoying one week injuries to Costa and Ramsey etc like we have this week (although on this occasion I expect both of them to start). You're setting yourself up to fail if you rely on your starting 7 to be playing week in week out with no issues whatsoever.

                    Meh. I'm content with someone who will play. I like to have a Brady/JWP type. But it's not necessary. That's what transfers are for.

                      Thats what makes Naismith attractive. He has far more potential than any mids in a similar price change. Although having said that I have both Zaha and Naismith. Zaha is still only a punt at this stage though I think.

                        I like Zaha more than Naismith mainly because he's properly nailed. And there are plenty of mids in Naismith's price range who could prove as or more valuable...

                        Zaha, Moses, Mutch, Ramirez, Shelvey, JWP, Brady...

                        Just takes one to settle in and find form. Naismith is at the very least a serious rotation risk.

                        Those mids are terrible tbh. None of them have proven anything whereas Naismith is playing in Barkley's place and has gotten off to an excellent start. He started almost every game at the end of last season and there was more competition for places back then than there is now.

                        Zaha I'm hoping should be good but he's only made a sub appearance so far so its a risk.

                        Having two in this price range means they can be rotated a bit, thats my plan anyway.

            Wouldn't the fifth mid be higher in value because you had Naismith. So someone like Zaha or Dyer maybe a fairer cimparison

          True Ryan, I was happy to have Naismith in the 3-5-2 and lose some of his points on the bench. Welbeck at 7m is just a bargain. Compared gash like Pelle in that range and even higher to the drunk giraffe that is Adebayor

    Long term maybe but next 2 Naismith has West Brom and Palace. I think that gives sufficient time to see how Welbeck fits in. The .1 doesn't make a difference to the number of points he will score vs City

                Not terrible. My first four picks were money. The Giroud pick on auto sent me over the edge.

                Really more annoyed that it was delayed so many times to the one night I wouldn't be home. But then draft leagues are pretty well diminished when most of the league doesn't show up to draft. Oh well...

      Understnd what you mean Willis but for 7m and (hopefully) the main man up top for Arseanl i can see the appeal.

      I know 'coverage' is frowned upon but to be involved in resnal for that price is good value.

      Arsenal- Welbeck
      Man City- Aguero
      Liverpool-Sterling
      Chelsea- Costa.

      Then add Fab/Haz/Ramsey/Di Maria/Silva as you see fit

  16. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?

    Thinking of this as a wildcard team:

    Begovic - Gilks
    Clyne - Van Aanholt - Moreno - Coloccini - Moore
    Fabregas - Sterling - Tadic - Siggy - Boyd
    Diego Costa - Balotelli - Rooney

    Would have 1m in the bank. Will probably bring in Ramsey/Theo + Welbz in for a Rooney/Balo and Tadic around GW8.

    Thoughts?

    Thoughts on potential WC team:

    Bego (4.0)
    Moreno Clyne Van Aanolt (Duff Hutton)
    Sterling Fabregas Siggy Zaha (4.5)
    Aguero Costa Falcoa
    .6 in bank that could be used anywhere

    Thought process being you can always come down from any of those 3 forwards if injury or bad form but WC'ing and not having them gets very tricky getting up to them ever from a Wellbeck or Naismith

      Could also use the .6 to go from Fab/Zaha to Tadic/Cabella, 2 guys I think are on the verge of breaking through fantasy wise. Just thinking out loud at this point.

    My team:

    Mignolet/Krul
    Cahill/Shawcross/Sagna/Jagielka/Skrtel
    Sanchez/Siggy/Fab/Ki-Sung/Davis
    Jovetic/Costa/Jelavic

    I'm trying to move money without using my WC, I've come up with these options for this GW, both for a -4

    A)Sagna--->Wilson & Davis---->Henderson for a 4-4-2
    B)Skrtel--->Wilson & Jovetic--->Balotelli for a 4-3-3

    A is possibly the safer option while B could bring in big points this week...much obliged lads!

    I'm struggling with Captain choice folks...

    Sterling - great form but just played 180 minutes of Hodgeball. Villa no pushovers defensively.
    Rooney - Average form and also played two games of Hodgeball. QPR kinda crap though.
    Balo - Guaranteed starter, should have scored vs Spurs.

    Any thoughts? I'm currently very tempted by Balotelli.

      I would choose Balotelli if I had him. My choice is (in order of preference) Costa, Sterling, or Rooney.

      I'm giving Rooney 1 more week otherwise Rooney>Balotelli is going to materialize fairly quickly. I hope Welbeck stays quiet until the next international break so I can get him cheap before Arsenal's fixtures improve.

      You'd think he'd be nailed on with Sanogo being rubbish, Sanchez struggling up front and Giroud injured. Despite all that however I'm still not sure. I prefer to monitor at this stage.

          Bringing in Welbeck for Naismith would require a hit and dropping Tadic+Naismith (who both have great fixtures) so I'm holding off until his fixtures improve. Judging by how slow rises have been he won't rise again until after the City game, and at 7.0 he'd still be a snip.

          As for the original question, its a 50/50 imo. Sanogo would offer an outlet for Arsenal against City, but Welbeck offers pace on the counter. Its a bit of a toss-up between Welbeck, Sanchez, and Sanogo, so I'd hold off if I were you.

    Welbeck/JWP vs Naismith/Tadic ?

    I have the latter pair, but may consider changing next week (while also saving 0.7 in the process). I like Tadic due to fixtures, but it might be economical to cash in on Welbeck's rise if he scores a couple.

    Assuming my injury doubts get confirmed fit, which of these moves would you do?

    A) Jovetic -> Ade
    B) Ramsey & Jovetic -> Sterling & Ade (4 points)
    C) Sanchez & Jovetic -> Sterling & Balo (4 points)
    D) Sanchez & Bony -> Sterling & Costa (4 points)
    E) Bony & Jovetic -> Costa & Naismith (4 points)
    F) Sanchez, Bony & Jovetic -> Sterling, Costa & Welbeck (8 points)

    Krul
    Terry, Clyne, Wisdom
    Sanchez, Hazard, Ramsey, Siggy
    Rooney, Bony, Jovetic

    Elliot, Chambers, Hutton, Albrighton

      I know it probably wont be popular with others but F.
      Sorts out-
      -Under performing/ scoring FF points (imo) Sanchez. he may well come back later in the season. Get on form Sterling with good fixtures
      -Bony to Costa. Yes and yes
      -Jovetic to Welbeck. yes

      All 3 of the ins will stay with you for the short to medium term barring injury.

        True that, although on reflection I'm not sure Jovetic -> Welbeck is worth an extra hit this week.

        Won't be popular but in currently on B. Fancy Ade and Sterling to both do well the next couple of weeks and it let's me keep hold of Sanchez, who I fancy to kick on now he has his goal (2 in 2 now for ARS)

          Ade is a player that i am probably biased against. I watch many Spurs games and as an actual player he is one of the most ingratiating ever. Still seems to score the FF points and as nailed on as they get i guess

            Yeah, know what you mean. He has pens in his locker too I believe.

      Sanchez>Sterling is a solid move imo, as is Jovetic>Naismith. Both save you a ton of cash as well. Balotelli is a nice option too, so I'd probably do C.

      Might want to wait on clarification on Costa's injury situation first

    My front 8 no bench player !!

    Ramsey Fabregas Siggi Sterling Tadic
    Welbeck Rooney Costa

    going for a fluid strategy where bench player depends on fixtures. This week it Siggi at Chelea Then it Fab at man c then it Welbeck at man c

    Normally this strategy not so great , but with Welbeck effectively being a big hitter at a very low price makes it possible , same with Siggi ,big hitter cheap price, hve to adapt to situation
    Will not be forced into transfers with this strategy as can bench an injured forward as have good replacement , not marney or albrighton

      agree , only the flaws being u could miss the price hike on certain players (as injury to certain player will cause majority to shift to another one) due to your reliable 5th midfielder , unless u switch back to budget 5th midfield..and slight compromise of 1st choice defenders quality..

      I've got this team but Naismith instead of Welbeck. I like this strategy but having Welbeck in there instead of Naismith causes some issues such as crippling the defense.

      You might want to consider swapping Tadic for Dyer and upgrading Rooney to Aguero for example. Its tough to drop one of the other 4 mid's though, but saving could allow you to improve the defense.

      The front line I invisage myself towards in GW8 (2nd int. break) when Arsenal's fixture's improve and Welbeck has settled is Balotelli-Costa-Welbeck. It all depends on how long Naismith can keep his form up as Everton have good fixtures GW8 onwards too. Barkley's return could force my hand though.

      That defense looks really poor. WBA have dreadful fixtures apart from Burnley in GW6, as do Villa. Neither Dummett or Hutton are nailed on either, and Gamboa might replace Wisdom soon.

      You might also want to reconsider Rooney as captain given his poor form and threat from being substituted for Van P or Falcao. Sterling or Costa would be my suggestions.
