Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Monday

Abel Hernandez and Mo Diame net on their Hull debut in a pulsating 2-2 home draw with West Ham. Enner Valencia strikes on his first start for the Hammers, while James Chester remains on the bench after Steve Bruce shifts to a four-man defence.

Tigers New Boys in the Goals
Steve Bruce handed deadline-day buys Mo Diame and Abel Hernandez their debuts for last night’s encounter and was rewarded after the new boys bagged a goal apiece. Diame’s introduction saw Jake Livermore shift to the right flank as the Tigers boss opted for a 4-4-2, while Hernandez joined Nikica Jelavic up front, with Tom Ince – who had previously been fielded alongside the Croatian, dropping out of the matchday squad altogether. Hernandez’ opener certainly suggests he could prove to be an inspired signing by Bruce but with City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next five, few will be looking to invest in Hull right now.

Chester Benched as Bruce Shifts Formation
After starting the first three matches with a 3-5-2 system, Bruce’s decision to opt for a four-man defence left James Chester’s Fantasy owners with a dilemma. Granted, the Hull boss switched tactics on a number of occasions last season but if he continues with a back-four, the 5%-owned Chester may struggle to climb ahead of Curtis Davies and Michael Dawson in the pecking order. Going on Bruce’s team sheets so far, then, left-back Andrew Robertson, at 4.5, seems the safest budget route into the Hull defence.

Valencia Helps Hammers to a Point
After playing just 22 minutes in the opening three Gameweeks, the Ecuadorian netted a superb long-range effort on his first start of the season. Sam Allardyce fielded all three of his new forwards together for the first time and altered his tactical approach, as the visitors lined up in a 4-3-1-2 formation with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind Valencia and Diafra Sakho. While their two-goal haul will please the Hammers boss, his side have now failed to keep a clean sheet as he goes on the attack – with Liverpool and United next, defensive returns look hard to come by.

    Costa #1 on Captain Poll.
    Rooney only 4 votes ahead of Di Maria.

    I like it.

    Another horrible week for me, I just can't seem to get any luck yet.

    Thinking of pulling the WC and looking at the following:

    Heaton / Hamer
    Cahill PvA Clyne Duff Wisdom
    Ramsey Sterling Siggy Schneiderlin Boyd
    Aguero Rooney Costa

    0.3 ITB

    What do you think? Is the midfield too light on?

      I would downgrade Cahill and upgrade Schneiderlin to Mirallas or Chadli, and also swap Wisdom to Moore.

          Not sure. Moreno looks great going forward but Liverpool defensively suspect. Maybe a United defender? Not sure. Just don't think he is worth 6.5M

            Yeah 6.5 is a rather large chunk. To bring in Mirallas I have 5.1 to spend, if I pick Chadli I have 6.4 to spend.

              If you are set on a Chelsea defender, you may as well get Terry and go Schneiderlin to Chadli I reckon.

    A) Terry + Schurrle —-> Ivanovic/Baines + Chadli/Mirallas

    B) Chester + Schurrle —-> Ivanovic/Baines + Chadli

    C) Terry/Caulker + Schurrle —-> Duff + Di Maria/Sanchez/10.3m

    This week's captain choice is very obvious, especially after you've had a look at this table (sort by chances conceded inside box) .... Chances conceded inside box are significantly more than any other team, and they are coming up against a form team as well... Gotta be a no brainer surely

        My possible captain picks: Aguero, Costa, Ramsey, Siggy, Sterling, Di Maria

        I think I may flair it and go for Di Maria.

          It has to be a no brainer after looking at the table,surely? Villa have conceded 0 big chances so far no Ramsey is a no go area for me

            • 12 Years

            Yeah that's why I'm not really considering Ramsey this week (also not considering Sterling & Siggy much).

            I just have a feeling Mourinho will come out on top again and that Costa will be involved in everything they score.

              I think that table should make your Siggy decision a lot more simpler as well when you see shots conceded inside for Southampton

              He might, but I can't see him getting a haul

          Sort by shots conceded in the box. But actually, sorting by almost any of the defensive stats brings the same team up again and again. Extraordinarily fortunate to be in the position they're in.

      I disagree. They've had some really tough fixtures and those numbers will be inflated by that. United aren't as cohesive as other teams and could be found out. They scored 4 goals for 6 shots on target against QPR which isn't sustainable. A couple of the goal were fortunate bounces (free kick, Adm assist) and/or gifted to them by Ferdinand and they created little apart from that.

      I'm strongly tempted by Baines if I get him, or should he be "don't bench don't captain"?

        I think that Hazard and Cesc will score similar points come the season end.

        But Cesc is far more consistent and ticks along nicely. Thus you don't lose patience with him and his value holds.

        Hazard on the other hand fires blanks and his value drops and owners panic and then he gets a brace after a run of 2,2,3,2,5.

        4.9M seems lumpy for a Burnley defender, even with his set piece involvement.

        Duff @ 4M is tempting though... As is Taylor/Moore/Baines (for Cahill).

      Hazard taking up a lot of budget, with City away next.
      Double up on United attack with Leicester WHU and WBA in next 4, Chelsea have City, Arsenal and United in next 5. Hazard to Di Maria
      You wont make point in defense, its the in form attackers you need to jump on

    When people talk about using their WC on a DGW, what is the general strategy there? Do you get loads of DGW players in the upcoming GWs, then WC to fix your team after, or WC to get a load of doublers in?

      I did it last year and it semi paid off. Not as much as I wanted it too though. People who didn't have WCs still had plenty of DGW players with good planning. I'm sitting on my WC at the moment and aim to keep it again, but won't hesitate hitting the button if things go tits up as it's not the end of world not having it later.

      WC iro DGW's are overrated.

      Safe a FT and do 3 transfers for -4 to load up.

      Most of the serious FPL managers will have players/capt material from the top sides anyway by the time the DGW's arrive as we know the schedules a while in advance.

      And remember quality over quantity when it comes to DGW's. No use siting with 3 Hull and 3 Leicester players on a DGW just in order to have 11 DGW's.

    On a WC. So far team looks like this:

    Mannone - Krul

    Duff - Wisdom - Bertrand - Hutton - Rafael

    Chadli - Siggy - Fabregas - ADM - Sterling

    Pelle - Costa - Rooney

    No Ramsey so far but can squeeze him in from GW8 onward. Any comments and/or suggestions? Is there a better GK pair for 9m?
