The Technical Area – Assessing United’s Midfield Versus QPR

A 4-0 thrashing of QPR helped Man United to their first win of the season under Louis van Gaal last weekend. After failing to find a way past Burnley in their previous league fixture, the Red Devils ran riot against the hapless R’s, with a trio of midfielders, Angel di Maria, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, all finding the net on Sunday afternoon.

In this week’s Technical Area article, we cast an eye over United’s chief midfield protagonists, as Fantasy faith begins to pick up in pace ahead of the weekend trip to Leicester.

involvement

The average position map highlights Van Gaal’s midfield diamond – Daley Blind (number 17) sat in front of the back-four, while Herrera (number 21) and Di Maria (number 7) were stationed right and left respectively behind Mata (number 8).

As the stats suggest, Blind is the man who will keep United ticking over and allow their attackers the platform to flourish – on his debut, he had 130 touches, produced 112 passes and received 101 passes, second only to Jordan Henderson amongst midfielders on all three counts in Gameweek 4. With Blind protecting the defence, Di Maria and Herrera produced 105 and 101 touches respectively – significantly superior to Mata’s 51 over 67 minutes on the pitch – with the Argentine edging Herrera for touches in the final third by 36 to 30.

As the average position map shows, though, Herrera dropped deep more often and subsequently received 86 passes – more than double Mata’s 40 and up on Di Maria’s 70, before the latter made way on 82 minutes. Indeed, in terms of passes received in the final third, Herrera’s 25 was second only to Wayne Rooney (27), with Robin van Persie sitting third on 20.

Post-match, Di Maria’s distribution was criticised by his manager after the new boy gave the ball away on numerous occasions. A quick look at the numbers shows why – the South American’s pass accuracy of just 80.3% was far and away the lowest of any United outfield player, with Blind’s metronomic display registering a 95.5% pass completion, whilst Mata and Herrera also stood out with 97.7% and 90.6% accuracy.

Given their similar starting roles, Herrera’s stats suggest he could be a genuine alternative to Di Maria if Van Gaal maintains the diamond. The former Athletic Bilbao man had previously failed to create a single chance for team-mates this term in his deep-lying role, but on Sunday, not only did he mirror Di Maria’s four key passes, Herrera also produced an excellent defensive shift, winning four of eight attempted tackles – at least double the number of any team-mate.

Mata, in spite of his advanced position in “the hole”, failed to register a single key pass on Sunday. Indeed, the former Chelsea man has created just four chances for United this term – averaging 86.3 minutes per key pass under Van Gaal compared to 38.6 for the Old Trafford outfit last year. Up front, despite earning an assist in the rout, Rooney created just one chance over his 94 minutes – the same number as Radamel Falcao managed in 27 minutes and two fewer than Van Persie (three).

In terms of goal threat, Mata’s five touches in the box was just behind Rooney and Van Persie (seven and six). Although the Spaniard equaled the strike duo’s two attempts inside the box, it’s noticeable that his minutes-per-attempt average is also down from last year (44 to 69) – in spite of scoring twice in four Gameweeks, his goal threat, in addition to his creativity, has so far taken a turn for the worse under the new man in charge.

Di Maria’s growing band of owners may be a little worried by his lack of impact in the box. The Argentine failed to produce a single touch in the QPR penalty area and managed two long-range attempts in the 4-0 win, with his converted free-kick from distance a little fortunate to sneak past Rob Green. Indeed, over his two appearances for the Red Devils, Di Maria has managed just two touches inside the area, averaging an effort every 50.7 minutes and a key pass every 30.4 minutes.

Once again, Herrera’s stats are superior to the Argentine’s. The former managed two touches in the penalty area and fired a trio of attempts on goal, with one inside the box – prior to Sunday, he had failed to register a single attempt or touch the ball inside the penalty box. It remains to be seen whether Van Gaal will continue with the diamond formation, but while Di Maria and Mata owners will be relatively content with their day’s Fantasy output, Herrera definitely looks one to monitor if he can continue in the same vein.

Considering playing the wildcard, with injuries and out of form/favour:

    Begovic
    DEBUCHY CAHILL CHESTER Rio Hutton
    HAZARD Ramsey Sterling Siggy INCE
    Rooney Costa Naismith
    0.6 in the bank.

Looking to ditch the players in bold, as well as probably Rio, Ince and Naismith. Is that worth a wildcard?

No, you got a very good team imo, just get rid of Debuchy and maybe Chester for a hit if you're not confident with your 3 options at the back

Here is what I wrote to your query earlier:

          Ah cheers mate!

I'm keeping Lovren as his fixtures are great an he's had some good looks at goal. Without him my defense needs to rotate more and becomes less stable.

Caulker is my conundrum really. Leaning towards getting him out and playing chambers at villa instead, with Lovren and Baines completing my defense and Clyne offering another great option.

          Bertrand ticks all the boxes:

          - Cheap
          - Nailed on
          - Attacking
          - Great fixtures
          - Form team, attacking and defensively
          - Amazing CS potential
          - Will probably rise soon

              I see.

It's just his price which is influencing us. Duff is cheaper and so subconsciously we assume he is more of a risk. They have kept 2 CSs on the trot, and so won't change anything soon. They kept one at United too, and QPR let in 4, despite bolstering their defence with the likes of Caulker.

This will leave them in with good morale, and with the fixtures they can keep more CSs. Both are secure IMO, and Duff is by far better value. He is more suited to the BAPS, and picked up 2 in both their stalemates. I would rather have many other options at 4.5, Naylor, Wilson, PVA, Chambers etc. Duff is the standout option over Shackell for me.

Then it's a reasonable choice. Strengthens you this week but you're weaker for next - but redistributes funds away from the defence and moves it to your strikers, which I'm guessing you feel is necessary. It's non-template - so if this is another tick in the box for you then go for it.

yeah but next week is sort of the point

I need the funds to go Rooney, Costa, Aguero but with Chelsea's fixture next week i fear if i don't lose them both now I will want to keep both next week

That I completely understand. I reckon it's the riskier move to do the changes. To keep hold and stay template is the safe option - it just depends on how you feel about the risk, really. It'll either give you a leg up on your rivals or will crash and burn if Terry & Hazard finally score the points that were expected of them from the start of the season. I don't see any middle ground.

That's what I would do - but I'm feeling risk averse at the moment. Terry to Duff for me - keep Haz in reserve for Villa and then look next gameweek on how to finalise the funds for Aguero.

    Lovren, PvA, Ivan (Terry, Debuchy)
    Ramsey, Sterling, Mata, Siggy (Ince)
    Pellé, Costa, Naismith

    Which one do you recommend?
    1: Debuchy -> Clyne
    2: Terry, Debuchy -> Baines+Clyne (-4)
3: Mata, debuchy -> AdM, Bertrand

Unsecure of Mata. Afraid he will max be a sub this GW.

Team for GW5 as it stands:

            Krul
            Lovren Caulker Chambers
            Ramsey Sterling Tadic Siggy
            Costa Rooney Naismith

            Begovic // Fabregas Clyne wisdom
            2FT's 0.5itb

I think all my mids will out score Ramsey in the next 3, so thinking about this:

            Krul
            Baines Lovren chambers
            Sterling Tadic Siggy Fab
            Costa Rooney Naismith

Begovic // Clyne Boyd wisdom (1.4itb)

I see this has been the problem with many teams, but I don't think you've quite got the balance of the team right. I prefer a nailed on fifth defensive mid of 4.5 or under so that benching dilemma is avoided every week.

Now seeing that you can't do anything about it, here is how I would set things straight:

-Do Caulker to Bertrand and Tadic to a nailed on 4.5 midfielder this week
-Next week, remove Naismith (he plays liv away) for Pelle (who plays QPR at home)

This would improve the balance of your team, it would also allow you get Baines in time for his better fixtures

                Cheers.

Not bad ideas actually. Was keen on Pelle but struggling to get him in if I get Baines however. If I downgraded Tadic this week if have cash for Pelle as you say, but not enough for Baines+Pelle as I would I I downgraded Ramsey. 3 Southampton players might be abit much though.

Last week was all about holding on to my FT and not kneejerking, this week is all about setting my strategy. Going round in circles abit!

No issues mate, but the first priority should not be baines/ramsey, should be the balance of your team (coming from a baines die hard fan)

The more I think about your advice the more I realise how right you are. Trying to get Baines in this week would just handcuff me FT wise as well as destabilizing my currently solid squad.

Tadic>Boyd this week and then Naismith>Pelle next week makes a lot of sense and would also free up some cash while balancing my squad. I love your forward line too and wouldn't mind adding Pelle to Rooney-Costa myself for the great run of fixtures (with a view to downgrading or upgrading Rooney around gw8 or 9).

I also like the idea of maintaining my 2FT's until an emergency. I worked hard to save them and it would be silly to throw them away unnecessarily.

My defense would be fine the next two gw's too

                      Caulker-chambers-Lovren
                      Wisdom-Clyne-Lovren

Though in gw7 I may need to swing a move as 4 of them have tough games. No need for changes just yet in any case.

    A tricky one here, play:
    Moreno (why)

Henderson's point potential is totally dependent on his position. With 2 strikers, Liverpool will position him behind Sterling in the diamond formation. Good thing about his play are his key passes. His runs are impressive and his in-box delivery is also impressive. IMO, wait before going for him as there are many players in Liverpool who are more attacking and Henderson won't be consistent. Talking about Chadli and Schneiderlin, I think they both have been lucky and I would never rely on any of them

    Lucy, if you're about.

What's the deal with Schneiderlin? Is he a geniune prospect now or just gotten lucky?

Lucky, imo. Not consistent. Will slow down quickly

Other people have seen Southampton play.
Koeman's midfield seems to be more dynamic than Pochettino's.. looks to be getting into more dangerous positions and seems to have the composure to finish. Also probably wants a big move in January. Mightn't be a bad punt.

He is genuinely good. Had a good run last Season as well.

The departure of Lallana allows him a bigger and more creative role, no?

I'm looking into him. I've currently got Tadic, but have concluded there's better value in Pelle or Schneiderlin. Rearranging without wildcarding will take time so it probably won't happen for me. Pelle up top from Soton and Di Maria in midfield is a better option than Rooney - Tadic imo.

I'm a first timer, and I'm currently in the top 0.2% :D. Tops in most of my leagues, low 300s here. Bragging, obviously, but mostly saying that because I wouldn't be there without this site and all the geniuses on these boards.
