This Much We Know – Gameweek 6

There may be one match remaining in Gameweek 6 but, as always, there’s plenty for us to mull over. Palace’s form under the new man in charge, Southampton’s wide men, the lack of resilience afforded by Hull, Chelsea’s out-of-form Belgian and Man City’s improving performances are amongst a number of topics on today’s menu.

Warnock deserves credit…
A 2-0 win over in-form Leicester extended Palace’s unbeaten record to four since Neil Warnock took the reins. At both ends of the pitch, the new manager has made an impact – not only has he retained the Selhurst Park solidity instilled by Tony Pulis by securing back-to-back home clean sheets, his side are flourishing in the final third and have fired eight goals in four league outings, bringing the London club back onto our radars at both ends of the pitch. Warnock has also put aside his previous spat with Jason Puncheon and the wide man has flourished – attacking returns in four of his five league outings this season indicates he remains the weapon of choice, with Wilfried Zaha looking an increasingly peripheral figure once again.

Mane’s arrival could unleash Tadic…
The Senegal wide man was handed his league debut at home to QPR and immediately picked up an assist as the Saints won yet again. Mane’s installation on the left allowed Dusan Tadic to start as an inverted winger on the opposite flank and register his most attacking display of the season – six shots and four efforts inside the box was a season high for the Serb and top amongst midfielders for the Gameweek. Both players look full of promise right now, and with the fixtures still very much on side, Tadic may well be set for a climb up the midfield standings if he starts to convert his increased number of chances.

Hull don’t do clean sheets with four at the back…
Steve Bruce’s side had conceded just three goals in the opening trio of Gameweeks with his tried-and-trusted 3-5-2 formation. A spate of summer signings has forced the Tigers boss to change course, however, but his decision to play a more expansive brand of football has come at a cost, with the switch seeing Hull concede eight goals in the resultant three league fixtures. Bruce’s side may be scoring more – averaging two goals per match with the new system – but having picked up just two points with their new tactics, their manager may well be pondering a return to a more pragmatic approach in order to stop the rot.

Chelsea can coast without Hazard’s contribution…
The Belgian turned in yet another ineffectual display as Jose Mourinho’s side eased past Villa 3-0. With a single goal and two assists over the first six fixtures, Hazard has now played a played a part in just three of his side’s 19 league goals this season (15.7%) – a ratio in stark contrast to last year, when he scored 14 goals and created 10 of the Blues’ 71 strikes (33.8%). Whilst there’s no denying his calibre, it’s clear that Jose Mourinho’s side have become far less reliant on the Belgian – subbed off on 68 minutes without a shot or key pass against Villa, the Fantasy exodus looks set to pick up pace.

Chadli looks the real deal..
While Chelsea’s Hazard continues to toil, his compatriot is becoming increasingly crucial to Tottenham’s season. Chadli sits joint-top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings after firing his fourth goal of the campaign and has now moved 14 points ahead of team-mates Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela. It’s worth bearing in mind, though, that Mauricio Pochettino’s penchant for freshening up his options midway through the second-half has meant Chadli has managed 90 minutes just once – whilst the Belgian’s pitch time still looks an issue, he’s shown time and again that he’s more than capable of atoning for that, notching four of his side’s eight goals so far.

We can’t write off Gerrard…
The Liverpool skipper served a perfect reminder of his dead-ball abilities by firing a free-kick opener in the Merseyside derby. As we saw last year, Gerrard, in spite of his deep-lying role, proved the doubters wrong on numerous occasions by racking up 205 points and his weekend rise up the rankings suggests it’d be wise not to overlook him. Now sitting just five points behind team-mate Raheem Sterling, Gerrard is identically priced at 8.9, yet sits in just 5% of Fantasy teams compared to the teenager’s 49.5% ownership – those eyeing up an Aaron Ramsey replacement may well ponder Gerrard as a real differential as the Reds prepare for an excellent run of fixtures.

Burnley’s midfield is key to clean sheets…
A 4-0 hammering at West Brom ended The Clarets’ run of three clean sheets yesterday. Noticeably, both David Jones and Dean Marney missed out through injury, forcing Sean Dyche to change tactics and shift to a 4-5-1. The Clarets boss switched formation after the break but by then it was too late – forced to go on the offensive, their frailties at the back were cruelly exposed, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table. It’s just one goal in six matches now, and with last term’s top scorers Danny Ings and Sam Vokes still sidelined through injury, Dyche’s side risk being cast adrift before long.

The budget frontmen continue to deliver…
There’s no shortage of cut-price options for our three-man frontlines right now. Saido Berahino’s brace took the West Brom forward into fourth spot in the FPL forward standings – so far, four of the top eight strikers sit under the 6.0 price mark. Add in the fact that Palace’s Fraizer Campbell has now scored in each of the last two and West Ham’s Diafra Sakho has notched in all four of his starts for Sam Allardyce’s side and it’s fair to say that Fantasy managers looking to offload Wayne Rooney are spoiled for budget choices right now, with such a trade potentially freeing up plenty of cash to upgrade elsewhere.

Arsenal are looking top heavy…
The arrival of Alexis Sanchez was meant to spearhead the Gunners’ title bid but so far it’s clear that Arsene Wenger has yet to find a perfect balance. Despite scoring in three of his previous four appearances in all competitions, the Chilean was dropped to the bench for the north London derby, and whilst replacement Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain grabbed the hosts’ equaliser, Sanchez will surely be expected to nail down a starting berth in the near future. With Theo Walcott potentially back within a month, though, the Arsenal boss still needs to find a formula that allows all his big-hitters the chance to flourish and keeps his side tight at the back. It’s perhaps no coincidence that their only clean sheet so far was due to a move to 4-2-3-1 away to Villa, but with a number of central midfielders doubtful for the weekend trip to Chelsea, Wenger’s chances of keeping out the hosts at the Bridge seem remote.

We can’t ignore City’s goal potential…
With Edin Dzeko installed alongside Sergio Aguero in a 4-4-2, the champions ran riot against Hull’s porous defence. The Bosnian’s brace suggests he’s finally rediscovering the form that served up 16 goals last time around, though with Stevan Jovetic now passed fit for tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Roma, the options up front look set to increase for Manuel Pellegrini. Sergio Aguero’s minutes continue to be managed, though a fourth goal of the campaign, allied with David Silva’s two assists, suggests that City’s main men are starting to find their stride ahead of a very encouraging run of fixtures.

Never again this season I think.

I was going to be shipping him out this week, it frustrated me further that he got a red after doing at least some justice for his price-tag.

Aguero - Costa - XXX is my new front line. Now all i hope is Kuns hammy stays together for the season and he really explodes into form.

My fear with Kun is the same as with Sturridge. You just know it(an injury) WILL happen. It's a question of when.

          Hm, possibly.
It's same to assume that at some point an injury will occur, but to have faith that he is in fact fit and has been eased in this time round noticeably moreso than previous times gives me confidence.

            Woy,
As an Aguero--Costa--XXX owner myself, I'm constantly under worry that one or both of Costa and Aguero will be benched due to CL or pick up an injury in training or a match. It's a nervous time each week until pressers are done. At some point Pelle and Jose will troll us all and bench them and it always worries me that it's going to be both in the same week leaving me with 1 front man and cheapo bench options.

Pelle has only played Aguero a full 90 minutes in 7 occasions over last season and this season. This seems to show he's going to continue to manage his minutes carefully. Granted, it's Aguero so he doesn't need the full 90 to produce. But for 12.1 it would be nice to get more than 1 goal each week. Especially when there are options at 1/2 the price doing so now. Just some thoughts here.

What puts me off is that I can't see myself (c) Kun over the next couple of weeks.

And very good thoughts at that!

Cheapo bench of (with all big hitters playing) is Henderson, Hutton and Wisdom so tbh I'm not overly fussed with that.... but I really appreciate the input. Thanks.

              Go hard or go home!

I'm right in the boat with you on this, so I'm hoping for big returns! It's just frustrating when Dzeko gets a brace and Kun only gets 1 and yanked after 65 minutes.

Second top goal scorer last season. Looks to play more of a provider than goal scorer this year, however, with Ulloa in the team. He'll still grab his fair share of goals, but won't take the #9 spot off Ulloa.

I don't just mean his FPL points are on the slide. I mean the things he does that get him those points are on the slide. He's not looking great for goals right now.

Then again, I might be being blinded by the 10-men effect. I feel like I'm taking that into account but perhaps I'm not.

Good luck to you but I think it's a bit daft. Smells like trying too hard for a differential.

Can I ask how you came to that decision? Is it because they are more expensive so you felt the need to play the? Or better teams, attacking potential...?

Moreno's attacking potential, plus Everton failing to score at Anfield for three years. And obviously QPR look like a guaranteed clean sheet.

I was very close benching Siggy for Wisdom, in fact, I have absolutely no recollection of putting Siggy back in. I was 4-3-3 for the whole week. Personally I wouldn't have played Moreno, well I sold him for Bertrand which was a stroke of luck.

    Chelsea.

Ok,I watched the entire Chelsea match on sat, Hazard was anonymous and didn't look interested. He kept going deeper to pick up the ball and Fabregas just ignored him. His goal threat was non-existent and really not surprised he was hooked on 67 minutes.

Fabregas, although playing deeper was involved in everything and was playing centrally - looks a big assist threat especially was on corners and free kicks.

Oscar looked far more threatening than both however though he is a punt at this stage.

Schurlle came on and looked lively as usual - if only he was nailed on for minutes he would be the best option at 7.5m, but as ever that is a big risk.

Ivanovic seems to have license to do what he likes and looks a big assist threat from out wide and a big goal threat from set-pieces.

The way Chelsea are set up I still think the points will come from the main areas they have already. Ivan bombs forward and all set pieces seem to be aimed to him. Fab like you say, takes and is involved in everything and Costa up top will hoover up the chances. Schurrle is becoming a bit of a solksejkar figure off the bench.

I think the other players will share points but those three are the main stand outs still.

Yeah, he basically said Hazard wasn't good enough and that's why he got the hook. Typical Mou motivational bollocks. If Hazard doesn't respond this week there could be a problem between those two.

I have watched every Chelsea game this season barring the league cup and I can only see Haz scoring large without Costa there, he was running off Drogba all night vs Shalke and looked a machine.

I believe Oscar will play more Premier League games than CL as Mou favours Willian for those games.

Schurlle annoys the crap out of me, reminds me of Balotelli with his wayward shooting from everywhere, plus he steals the set pieces off Fab and is terrible on the dead ball.

Ivan is a boss!! Points machine!

I had this dilemena as had exactly the amount of money to swap Rooney for him (who will drop tonight). Couldn't risk it in the end so swapped Rooney for Falcao instead and changed Ramsey for Sterling to get Pool coverage.

Pool's fixtures are just so much better than United's and I think Sturridge will come back with a bang, while Falcao is still looking for his scoring-boots. I own Sterling already, might risk it tonight with Sturridge and hope he is fit enough.

I am sure he will, but getting Sturridge for 1 game before a 2 week international break is the thing of nightmares.

            Same as getting Kun then?

It's just far too risky for me. I am being very patient this year but without being lazy. I'm saving the FT, my strikers are strong enough for me not to worry. Aguero scored this week, so? I have Costa and Pelle.

Is the problem that you wanted to get a player far too soon after coming back from a career-threatening injury but Wally isn't ready yet?

Oh no, I'm not worried about Wally.

My "problem" is I don't want to get Kun as my Rooney replacement.

Hmmmm. Not sure tekkers is the go to guy just yet. Talk of his goal today conveniently omits the detail that it was a peno.

How about his compatriot? Awesome fixtures coming and since I won't be getting him (and he doubtless knows this) he will naturally go completely berserk with a brace a game.

Im not even aware of his goal.

He has a month to convince me he is fit and ready.

            Compatriot?

              Lukaku.

Ah well, a month could be enough for Tekkers. Amazing fixtures from then on.

Lukaku I'm not interested in when he is out on the wing.

And besides, I own Baines. Remember?

                😉

I don't think he'll be out on the wing much longer. And his points won't be determined by which other Everton players you own 😉

But for sure, a fully fit Tekkers in a non-dysfunctional Villa with lovely fixtures is very appealing ...

Wonder if he had some issue? I remember that period. He was hopeless. Maybe it was a planned move that did not materialize or maybe he played with an injury?

    Rambo Replacement Therapy?

Logging into FFS this morning I was tempted to write the usual replacement post, with an A, B, C to let whomever was around take their pick, Russian roulette style, on my team for next gameweek. I find this strategy rarely successful given the number of variables at play (how strong are the players responding? are they being truthful? do they know the stats?) So I have taken it upon myself to pull some of the numbers, do the hard graft and make (shock or shocks) a decision for myself.

Options 1: Keep Rambo - Always an option when an injury like this comes up and with prices changing at glacier speed this year, it could actually work out. I suspect Rambo will drop by 0.2-0.3 max over the month he is on the sidelines and if there are other problems in your squad could be an option. For me though, he has to go. Not showing the same position and attacking intent as last season and even without the injury was looking suspect.

Option 2: Angel Di Maria - The most exciting player in the game right now, given his sparkling last few games. Questions around his fantasy potential long-term have to be raised though, as does debate around his role at MUFC v Real. Now in 31% of teams, the majority think he will be the main man and all the rivals in my mini-leagues (which I am leading) have him. As an MUFC supporter, he is the obvious go to.

Option 3: Tadic Time - Turning in the most attacking midfield display at the front right of a 4-3-3 this past weekend, Tadic has yet to explode out of the gates the way his stats would predict. That means he is still a little under the radar and only in 2.5% of teams. He and Southampton looked great again on the weekend and it could have been a lot more for them. Mane was also really good and I enjoyed watching this match more than any other thanks to their attaching trio.

Option 4: Silva - Every year Silva makes an appearance in my team. Every year he stays for 4-6 weeks with 1-2 good returns but nothing more. In only 10% of squads, apart from Aguero, he really seems like the only option for City cover over their strong run of fixtures.

Option 5: The others - Chadli, Ozil, Mata, Ox, are all worth a look. My initial thought was to go straight for Mata, but the idea of a 3-week band-aide that will likely require another transfer (and likely -4) can't be overlooked. I find those short-terms punts rarely work out as it is a long-old season. There is also an argument he doesn't get right back in the squad. MUFC are far from firing and LVG could go to a 4-3-3 with Janujaz or maybe Valencia brought into the fold. Carrick is close as well, so Herrera (if fit) could push forward. My heart says Mata, my head says No-Mata.

The great part about this decision is it becomes really easy when you look at the number. My gut tells me ADM or Tadic. Perhaps surprisingly though, Tadic has the better numbers. He gets forward much more, has more influence on the game creatively, has the ball about as often as ADM and Silva, and spends all his time in the opponents box. The only factor is he hasn't score, which if he had converted a couple would make it no contest. Head-to-head comes out for Tadic over ADM.

I then looked at Tadic v Silva and thought it would be a similar story - boy was I wrong. Silva's numbers are outstanding and edge him ahead of Tadic in terms of touches and creativity. Big difference though is that Tadic is on penalties as well and Silva can go missing for games. He has a goal as well, which we know will come but based on Tadic's touches in the box and shots on target make this one very close.

Of the other's to consider, Chadli, Mata and Ox don't even really compare to Silva and Tadic. Surprisingly Ozil doesn't come off too badly, but as a past Ozil owner I don't look forward to him going missing for games on end either.

So that means it is between Tadic and Silva. Looking at fixtures, both have a great run coming up, with Southampton edging it in the short-term and City in the longer-term. The other factor to consider is that I do already have Pelle, which ultimately may mean I go for Silva.

That said, Tadic seems to be the start pick and I haven't even mentioned price.

Downing is the most obvious one short term until Walcott comes back. Two great fixtures, price, form.

Ouch, risky pick for sure. He has played well for 2 of his past 60 fixtures.

Looking at the stats, he is way behind Tadic as well. Tadic has more than 120 more touches in the final third and triple the touches in the penalty box.

Downing not even a consideration for me.

        Good point.

Sterling and Fabs for those without is an option, though I still think Tadic and Silva are better choices.

Siggy > Dorrans/Brunt might be good in a couple of weeks to facilitate Di Maria > Sanchez. If Wally is back though then can get Mane instead. All depends on Siggy this week imo.

Although I may captain him. 😆

Hmm interesting that you say that. Have another week or 2 to think it through but just think that Sanchez will be a great option in a few weeks when they start spanking lower table teams for 2 and 3 goals.

Maybe I'm still having nightmares about Sessgnon. Brunt never did anything when I owned him. Morrison always stole his thunder. Dorrans was the "new kid on the block" when WBA got promoted a while back but he was either injured or never in the team.

Sanchez and where he fits into at Arsenal is a mystery. It's like his versatility is actually a drawback. Arsenal have to many injuries for my liking at the moment.
