The Digest – Gameweek 7

Our last look back at Gameweek 7 casts an eye over Newcastle’s resurgent striker, Big Sam’s in-form outfit and the contenders to Diego Costa as legitimate armband options.

The Player

After his side had failed to score in each of their first three away fixtures, Alan Pardew turned to Papiss Cisse in order to address Newcastle’s worrying lack of bite. Finally fit to start after a long-term stint on the sidelines with a broken kneecap, the Senegal striker scored twice to salvage a much-needed draw for his under-fire manager on Saturday afternoon.

In his first appearance of the campaign in Gameweek 5, Cisse climbed off the bench to also net twice in a 2-2 draw and, despite playing a mere 151 minutes, has netted all four of The Magpies’ goals in the last four rounds of fixtures. Providing he steers clear of injury, starts looks assured once again for the 5.9-priced frontman but the question is, will Cisse be able to carry on and replicate the heroics of 2011/12, when he fired 13 goals in 14 appearances, averaging 7.5 points per appearances, or will he return to the frustrating figure that mustered just 10 strikes in the subsequent two seasons?

Certainly, with Emmanuel Riviere failing to settle in at St James’ Park, Cisse looks poised to lead the line in Pardew’s 4-2-3-1 formation right now and with five decent fixtures (LEI, wba, QPR, whm, bur) in the next seven, he has the platform to continue as Pardew desperately tries to steer his troops away from the drop zone.

The Team

A convincing 2-0 win over QPR took West Ham up to seventh in the table as their new-look side continue to impress. After his team scored a mere 40 times last term, Sam Allardyce’s decision to opt for a more offensive approach and bring in Teddy Sheringham as an attacking coach is so far paying off – The Hammers have now scored 12 goals in the first seven Gameweeks, a tally bettered by only four other teams.

Fundamental to the recent turnaround has been the stunning form of Diafra Sakho. Player of the Year in the French Second Division last season after scoring 20 times for Metz, the Senegal striker has stepped up seamlessly and has now netted in each of his last five in all competitions for the Hammers. Allardyce’s switch to a midfield diamond has afforded Stewart Downing the chance to create and despite moving to a more withdrawn role against the R’s, the midfielder still served up an assist and two bonus points – climbing to seventh in the FPL midfield standings on 37 points.

The attacking approach had, until the weekend, come at a cost, though. West Ham racked up 14 shut-outs last season but had conceded in every match until keeping out the R’s on Sunday – with the aerial threat of James Tomkins earning the centre-half a second assist of the campaign, Allardyce’s side are offering us legitimate options right across the outfield classifications right now.

The Talking Point

A goal against Arsenal took Diego Costa’s tally to nine strikes in seven appearances for Chelsea last weekend. In a stunning start to life in the Premier League, the summer signing has drawn a blank just once this season – away to City – and has served up a series of consistent performances that makes him, for many, the automatic armband option in any given Gameweek.

A closer look at the bonus points distribution in those matches, however, shows that Costa – in spite of his superb record – is having his work cut out in order to benefit. Costa has found the net in clashes with Burnley, Leicester, Villa and The Gunners yet has earned a single bonus point over those four matches combined – it seems that playing in a Chelsea team where many players are favoured by the BPS is somewhat curtailing his ability to make that step up as this season’s Luis Suarez.

Whilst the Uruguayan was the standout candidate last year, the last few weeks suggest that this time around, it’s not quite so cut and dried. Sergio Aguero’s strike against Villa means he has now notched in five of his seven appearances and, crucially, despite failing to score more than once, he’s still managed to earn bonus points on every occasion he has found the net – a potentially vital factor when assessing the pair’s captaincy credentials.

There’s also Angel di Maria to consider. United’s £60m has now delivered a goal and assist in three of his last four, earning 38 points over those fixtures, with a series of Fantasy displays that harks back to Gareth Bale’s final season in the English top-flight.

Given that he now resides in over 66% of FPL sides, it’s clear that Costa will typically be the most popular armband option from one Gameweek to the next. In spite of his near-impeccable scoring record, though, the likes of Aguero or Di Maria are starting to suggest they could be worthy rivals to the Chelsea star, lending a little more weight to the armband conundrum than we perhaps previously anticipated.

What are people's thoughts on Alderweireld? Thinking about getting him for next few weeks, can't see many better options in the 5.0 range

Tomkins has some nice fixtures coming bar GW9 and is looking a huge goal threat

Hardly a huge goal threat, he won't be playing Rio Ferdinand every week. His defending on Tomkins for West Ham goal was comical, he made him look like Suarez.

i think hutton for villa(4.2) and reid/tomkins/jenkinson(just for assist chances going up the right flank... just speculations i guess) but all have chances of creating more than just cs+bps is nice going from gw13 (whu) when they play vs. ncastle and villa after SOT game, actually same gw.
I have chambers/clyne/duff/wisdom/wilson, but have forster in goal, thinking off switching to baines now and getting in hutton for duff and maybe whu defence depends on how they play. They are not the same team as last season, not much for keeping clean but more for bringing in goals as they said in this post.

his USP over bertrand and clyne (apart from price now) was meant to be baps, but his historical level of being a 90% passer when playing at CB hasn't happened yet. his 79% v spurs was actually his best yet

You have missed his best weeks imo.
Think he will continue to deliver but have my doubts and value wise now not an essentialo ?

I would focus on dropping 5th mid first and upgrading defence.

You can not get many points with that back 7. so ADM is the least of your worries imo

Of course they need a DM. My point is that Arsenal tend to get blown up with injuries, Sunday was a prime example. Fabregas would be in the first team over Jack.

                Yeah but - again , Sanchez , Walcott ( soon ) Ramsey , Wilshire , Ozil .
Fabregas similar albeit better than most..

Arsenal have got more attacking mids than any team in the league.

Any manager worth his salt has to show some loyalty to good contracted players .

All the hype about why Wenger turned down Fabregas is just that . Most Arsenal supporters back Wenger on this.

Not at all . Arsenal have an overload of similar players.
Do they tell Ramsey , Wilshire and Ozil to take a backseat.

Cmon - So what do you do with all the decent contacted players.

Fabregas left on his own accord with Wengers blessing .
Its not a simple board game of moving pieces around - Wake up .

            You sound pretty young Prodge.

Or do you recall the Real Madrid side in the late 90s that bought every good player going. They won ZILCH

Bringing in Fab as good as he is would have been detrimental in the long run.

No idea how he would have been detrimental at all, have you seen his form for Chelsea? If Arsenal had him playing like that they'd be in with a shout at the title. Chelsea certainly didn't need him, and just look at United, we brought a luxury signing in Di Maria because he was better than all other options. Look what's going on.

Yeah - but you, MU, and like Arsenal have neglected in the area where you need most.

Fab is a great player , no argument.

But Arsenal spent money on Sanchez and they do not have a limitless well like Chelsea , MU and MC .

Detrimental - As when you cast aside loyal players with a lot of potential
Thats not the way Arsenal operate.
                We as supporters accept that.
We , supporters, are only angry that a good DM and an additional defender were not brought in.
Most understand why we did not chase Fab .

just looked at fix and Villa have the better coming up.

thinking of going to do Begovic, McGeady, Ulloa > Guzan/Mannone, Boyd, Aguero for -4.

having Benteke back might help them to keep the ball up front a bit longer, which is good for defense imo.
Vlaar returning to full fitness as well.

          Guzan it is.

Cost 0.1 m more so may need to get him in earlier as its part of a couple of transfers to get Aguero in and funds are tight.

Any suggestions on my current team lads?

    Bego / Hamer
    Ivan Clyne PVA Moore Duff
    Fab Sterling Siggy Downing Albrighton
    Kun Costa Pelle

    1.8 itb.

    i'm considering:

    A) PVA => Mangala
    B) PVA => Tomkins
    C) keep FT

    A) wouldn't enable me to do Downing => Chadli for GW 9

I like it, though I feel (bar the keepers) it's hard to have an opinion on this team as it's similar to the majority of RMT's on the site at the moment.

Probably means that it will do well!

      Very nice

      Like Mahrez as a 5th ,
If I change Baines to Azpil - hes da man.

Mmm VA to Chambers for next 6 also on ?

It's not my team... it's a team I'm tempted to WC to I just wanted to get a few opinions.
Current team isn't bad, but I get the feeling I might fall behind those with Aguero and Di Maria.

This is a repost from about 7:30am this morning (only a couple of bleary eyed posters were about!), with some amendments:

I think a lot of folk on here are interesed in Fabregas vs. Hazard for the Chelseea midfield spot after the Arsenal Chelsea game at the weekend.

Hazard was the standout player in that game, really driving Chelsea forward and terrorizing Arsenal's back four and central midfield three.

Fabregas was played in the double pivot and appeared fairly anonymous from a FPL perspective. He came to life in the final minutes providing his 7th assist of the campaign.

If you're a member I recommend that you check out the comparison tool. Compare Cesc against Hazard this season. Cesc's underlying stats would indicate that he is a more valuable asset than his Belgian counterpart (although Hazard obviously constitutes more of a goal threat)

Interestingly, the results are exactly the same when comparing Cesc 14/15 to Hazard's output in 13/14

I'm not sure if there are rules on publishing member info to the community so I'll leave it to you to check it out for yourselves.

For every brilliant game that Hazard has he'll outscore Cesc by (let's say) 5-7 points (the difference on Sunday).

Cesc will more than likely outscore Hazard by a smaller margin (let's say 3 points) , but much more consistently over the course of the season.

There is definitely an argument for Hazard over Cesc in the short term, if you think that he is about to go on a streak. He may well do this but there are absolutely no assurances.

In my opinion there is no argument for Hazard over Cesc in the long term, as Hazard's spikes will be more than offset by Cesc's regular returns.

I would urge all managers to think carefully before letting Cesc go in favour of Hazard.

Does any one here have a feeling that Poncho at Spurs is slowly getting the defence sorted? Southampton last year were great, so someone like Rose or Kaboul look great solid options for 5.0 over the next 5-8 weeks with the exceptions of Man City & Chelsea games!
