The ScoutCast – Episode 139 – Essential

Don’t get us wrong – we’re not labelling this latest droning session as “essential” listening. However, there’s no getting away from the fact that the concept of essential players has dominated the airwaves at Scout towers over the past week.

In this latest episode, Granville and I take on this meaty subject, whilst chewing over the importance of ownership and spit out the semblance of an opinion on both. Around that main course, we take on the usual bevvy of regulars with the usual haphazard panache.

Essential? Not quite, not even on a rainy Thursday night.

Grab this crucial slice of audio via this link or explore this necessary noise via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seems a bit silly this week given how good Swans have been defensively and how crap Stoke are going forward. Naylor also offer more attacking threat.

          Ok fine.

But why would have 3 saints defender in your team if you aren't going to play them at home vs Sun?

This ain't about glory mate, u have invested min 5m each for 3 saints defenders and can't play them all vs Sun at home.

                  Pointless to have 3 then

Sunderland look to be in far better form than QPR were.

I'm a go big or go home guy as well. But I've also benched three Naylor clean sheets this season. And Stoke are piss poor going forward.

Yet Sunderland have outscored them and of the two look to be the team finding some form. Logic also helps you know.

        1. BeachBadger

At the minute no. He hasn't given the returns to justify his huge price yet. But it is Aguero. He could explode any minute. Couldve had a hat trick last week and everyone and his dog would be buying him. Who are your other defenders? I think Chambers ffers great value going forward. Hutton or Vlaar maybe.

Odd conundrums aren't they. Each with doubts for different reasons lol I can see Mane being rested.Shane Long didnt play for Ireland. Moses I think will play. Looks like he wants him fit for the match. Ade should play too I reckon unless they're fed up of him not scoring and want an excuse to bring in Soldado or Kane 😆 . Not sure on Mangala. Did dhe play? DON'T do Coleman to Baines. Way too sideways. I know Baines has peno's and free kicks but not worht it IMO

I would probably keep the faith with Tadic also. He's soooooooo close to exploding it seems

And I would pick Welbeck. Cheaper, Arsenal's lone striker, Welbeck all day

Ivan. If you pay 7m plus for a defender you want chances of a clean sheet. Also attacks. Pens dont happen every week. Howard going a little postal this season. Distin and Hibbert starting for Ev? Others think diff i know, just my opinion. PS, dont own either

It's a tough one. I own both and I think Baines has exceptional attacking potential with both goals and assists. Everton's fixtures are also looking better than Chelsea's coming up. If Everton can get their defence back to where it was last season - Baines could be explosive!!

Janmaat home to Lei who are terrible away, happy with him for this week but will shift him soon.

Wilson is a very decent pick imo for 4.5m
        .
The main dilemma is committing to an expensive defender or playing defensively and covering myself with 2fts and plenty in the bank incase one of my front 8 gets injured

      FFS superstition.

Though I do agree that having an early captain fail seems to hurt more than a later captain fail, so if part of your strategy is minimizing regret (which I've come to value a bit more than I should, probably), then yes, it's a viable piece of the equation.

I had typed out a long reply to your post above about Ivan vs. Baines, but deleted it because it had too many caveats.

However, the main caveat was that if you can work in a different chelski defender (because you definitely should have at least one), then do that and get Baines over Ivan. Spread the risk, IMO. Ivan won't get more attacking points than Baines in the longer run.
