Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

Another week, another Arsenal absentee. It must be pretty crowded in the Emirates stands these days as each match seemingly delivers fresh injury woes but the Gunners walking wounded have had a regular stream of visitors to keep them company. Latest in this line of incarcerated candy stripers was Jack Wilshere, who followed team-mate Calum Chambers in keeping the disciplinary seat warm and ensures the north London outfit will be without another of their first team squad for the upcoming Gameweek.

Already trailing again from a Hull goal early in the second half, Wilshere was booked for two consecutive fouls on Gastón Ramírez in the space of three minutes. His tough-tackling style going a step too far in more ways than one for the second of these fouls, as he injured himself in the process and was duly replaced almost immediately. Wilshere will now sit out the trip to beleaguered Sunderland, with either of the fit again pairing of Mikel Arteta or Aaron Ramsey set to take his place in the midfield double-pivot.

As Wilshere toppled, the tightrope was in need of new tenants, but it never stays empty for long at this stage of the season. Over the course of the weekend’s schedule a couple of candidates were inducted in his place. On Saturday, a caution for West Ham’s Winston Reid was enough to take him to four for the season and his tally was matched the following day by Stoke’s Phil Bardsley. Both will therefore head into the weekend knowing a further indiscretion will see them incur a one-match ban.

Elsewhere, the Chelsea defence is set for a shake-up after ever-present Cesar Azpilicueta received his marching orders in Saturday’s win over London rivals Crystal Palace. The Spaniard’s two-footed lunge on the Eagles’ Mile Jedinak means he is set to miss the next two league matches – away to United and home to QPR – in addition to a Capital One Cup clash with Shrewsbury. New boy Filipe Luis should be afforded the chance to nail down the left-back berth, then, before Azpilicueta becomes available for selection in Gameweek 11, when the league leaders roll up to Anfield.

Palace’s Damien Delaney was also dismissed in the same match. The centre-half collected two yellow cards in the 2-1 home loss and will miss next week’s clash with West Brom – with Scott Dann still injured, Neil Warnock will roll up to the Hawthorns without either of his first-choice centre-halves .

Tottenham’s Federico Fazio is also set to serve a one-match ban. Handed his first league start of the season away to Man City on Saturday lunchtime, the Argentine was sent packing for denying a goal scoring opportunity and will miss the upcoming home clash with Newcastle.

United’s Wayne Rooney remains on the naughty step. The United skipper is set to serve the last of a three-match ban against Chelsea this coming weekend before returning just in time for the Manchester derby away to City in Gameweek 10.

Both Jonjo Shelvey and Calum Chambers return to action, though, having served one-match suspensions. The pair sat out last weekend’s fixtures after earning their fifth yellows of the season in Gameweek 7.

Finally, there are as many as 17 players currently sitting on three yellows, with Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas the most high-profile addition after collecting a caution against Palace. He joins the likes of Diego Costa, Yaya Toure, Graziano Pelle and Alberto Moreno in sitting two bookings away from an automatic ban.

I thought they had already factored that in though. He was unexpected to rise in the first place. Must be a random factor in there.

I've got 3/8 CS's from my 9.5m combo of Begovic-Krul combo, good for 28 points, which is only around one penalty save less than Lloris, so I don't see any reason to panic about my GK's. I chose this pair for rotation until January and that's how I'll keep it unless I ever have a 2nd FT spare.

Just as a general convo...I never doubt Hazard..he's fantastic, which is why I've had him for over two years...but...Is anybody else finding it strange that it's only since Costa has been injured that he's finally coming in off the wing a bit more, like days of old...
RVP has been well known for not wanting other players in his space in seasons past..which is fair enough if that's how he operates best...but is it the same for Costa and Hazard..Is that why Hazard has been sent so wide so often this season..Thoughts ?

Yeah has to be some truth to this. Hazard is at his best when he is driving into the box through the middle not when he is going out wide. It also probably helps that defenses seem to routinely not only force him out wide but also put two men on him for a lot of the times I've watched Chelsea recently.

Who else thinks Costa is highly likely to play on the weekend?
I mean Del Bosque says where Jose is coming from in terms of Costa's injury is a mystery, plus it's not like Costa was subbed off the spain game early from an injury.
For all we know, Jose may have just been taking precautions with Costa for a big game against utd. Against Palace, playing Costa would have been risky since he played the full game for spain.
Against Malabore, Costa wasn't worth the risk to play because they were basically guaranteed the win anyway.
Now that he has had a good rest, I strongly believe Costa will play against United and Jose is just playing mind games and trying to make Del Bosque think harder about playing his players when they have injury concerns.

And if he doesn't play... I'm screwed

it might make sense but actually all these are just our assumptions..the fact is that the twitter already said jose did not expect costa to play..if u still believe that it is mind game then be prepared that he might be out for the game.

i personally believe he is really injuried and even if he plays on wkend it might mean he has just recovered from the injuries. Palace away is never an easy game and i see no reason why jose will purposely risk the game. all the rest talk are purely our own assumptions and to a certain extent costa owners hoping that its just mind games.

Diego Costa. Will he/won't he? It's the question on over 60% of FPL managers minds atm. rather than focusing on trying to interpret JM's comments on the subject, I thought it might be useful to outline what I think are the best options in each case. Choose one based on what you think will happen:

    1) Costa plays - not much to do here, other than to perhaps post variants of 'lol@costa sellers' after line-up announcements have been made.

    2) Costa misses 1 game - tricky. Best option is to hold through the gw. Last week was an anomaly. Every potential Costa replacement got on the scoresheet, leading to a somewhat unhealthy paranoia of a repeat this coming gw. However, it really is unlikely that Aguero scores another double-brace or Pelle is involved in a second 8-0 slaughter. Save the FT or, cash willing, upgrade a sub to limit any damage.

    3) Costa misses 2 gw's - now it's selling time! Bank any profit made and look at making some cash and points, ready to pick Costa back up at a bargain price. One option is to simply replace with Pelle. It's also a great time to change a bad 5th midfield fodder to a more viable long term option. Costa to Berahino and fifth mid to Tadic/ Sanchez/ Hazard or even Oscar, for example. Choose a budget striker and a midfielder likely to rise in value over the 2 weeks. When selling back to Costa, chose a fifth midfielder like Boyd, nailed on and cheap as chips. Profit made from the two should cover any short-fall if Costa drops less than expected.

As an aside, if you have already sold and he does play on Saturday - check to see if he picks up a yellow card before rushing him back in. If he does, it might be worth waiting for him to pick up an additional one, and serve a one game suspension, before transferring in.

If Costa misses the United game, you're suddenly in a position where you can't sell him because he has QPR next, but he could just as well miss that game as well. The safest choice is to go with Aguero.

Yeah for sure. I think its also quite valid for Pelle though if you don't have him yet, albeit to a lesser extent. Renting Pelle for 3GW's before getting Costa back could be massive

you need to get rid of Ulloa. Costa>Aguero is an obvious one too. Another one you should consider is ADM>Tadic/Eriksen/Oscar/Chadli/Downing

depends if you think Zaha will play or not. ADM, Costa and Ulloa/Zaha should go. Perhaps just do Zaha/Ulloa out to a playing player and Costa>Aguero/welbeck

So a few seasons ago, come the last game of the season Fergie assured everyone that Jonny Evans was out injured and definitely wouldn't play, so I, and many others, got rid, or benched him.

He got a clean sheet and bonus, while the defenders i brought in failed miserably.

Mourinho plays the same mind games and Fergie

He said Evans needed surgery. Everyone assumed he wouldn't play and he was red flagged. It turned out the surgery could wait until the season was over and the legend that was the nailed on 4.5m points machine became a complete and utter troll.

Rooney down to 10.2 and 13% ownership, most of which will be dead teams

True. But he brings more headache. For example, I have Costa, Aguro, Pelle and ADM. People would tell me best option is to trade Costa for Rooney but I think Costa will come back firing on all cylinders soon. And definitely cannot get rid of Pelle. And doubling on Man Utd attack seems risky. Decisions, decisions

Big games hold no fear for Rooney

GW10 - City - record scorer in the derby
GW11 - Palace at home - decent fixture
GW12 - Arsenal - dodgy defence and decent record
GW13 - Hull - not looking as solid this season and he's at home

Stick or twist on Costa & ADM??

I'm currently top in my mini leagues (5874 overall)

    Guzan/Begovic

    Bertrand/Clyne/Baines/Chambers/Hutton
    Fab/Sigg/ADM/Sterling/Jedlinak
    Pelle/Welbeck/Costa

    1.3 in the bank

I dont have enough to do a straight swap for Aguero (0.3 short) and my bench fodder is bargain bin price but I don't really want to downgrade anywhere else.

I'm just worried about going into a week where 20% of my team value is injured and potentially not playing.
