Captain Sensible – Gameweek 10

Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Under normal circumstances, Diego Costa would be the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll but, as we know, things are not quite straightforward when it comes to Jose Mourinho. Nonetheless, having returned to training yesterday, faith in the Chelsea striker is building and he leads the way ahead of a plum home clash with a QPR defence that have shipped at least two goals in all four of their road trips. After scoring in each of his four home appearances, Costa leads the way with 29% of the votes cast so far.

Elsewhere for Chelsea, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas have earned 9% and 6% of the votes cast. The latter has been the most consistent, with a goal or assist in seven of his nine appearances, though Hazard delivered a double-figure haul in his previous match at the Bridge and has spot-kick duties to fall back on.

Alexis Sanchez sits in second as Arsenal prepare for the visit of Burnley. Subject to huge investment this week after taking his tally to five goals in his last six appearances with a brace against Sunderland, the Chilean has been backed by 20% heading into the weekend. Over 5% have opted for Danny Welbeck, though his form is a little disconcerting – he’s picked up points in only two of his six appearances since arriving in north London.

In third spot, Sergio Aguero remains firmly in our thoughts in spite of a surprise blank against West Ham. Up against a United defence that have picked up just three points on their travels, the Argentine has persuaded over 14% to hand him the armband – although his four-goal haul against Spurs is fresh in the memory, Aguero has stuttered at the Etihad and has scored in only two of his four home matches.

Further down, the likes of Graziano Pelle and Raheem Sterling are still in contention ahead of trips to Hull and Newcastle. Pelle has picked up points in six of his previous seven now and stands atop the Fantasy Premier League standings on 59 points, though the Tigers have tightened up since reverting to a three-man backline and have kept out their opponents in two of their last three. Sterling, with just two assists in the previous four, will be optimistic of returning to form against a Magpies backline with a single shut-out in seven.

So, it's between Aguero and Sanchez for my captain choice this week.

    Who got your vote?

On Aguero out of those 2 currently. I like that he plays on Sunday. And of course, it's Aguero.

Aguero. Perhaps rather sillily because Sanchez shot his load last week. He's more than capable to repeat this feat vs Burnley but it feels a little like chasing last week's points?

"Sillily" is the best word I've heard all week.

I'm also struggling to make that decision. It's on Aguero at the moment but I still may swap it at the last minute.

Silva looks like being out so not sure about Aguero tbh
Not sure about Sanchez either though ^^

Buying at current prices: Di Maria or Rooney? Di Maria's been fantastic and takes up a less scarce midfield spot but historically Rooney's been an incredibly consistent and explosive FPL player. Since I don't have Di Maria at a discount I'm leaning toward going with Rooney (next week) as a differential.

I would start Rose over Pieters. If you can't find anything better to do, ship Mannone to avoid a lost FT. Guzan or Heaton, perhaps?

Siggy to Downing / Charlie Adam / Victor Moses / S. Davis / Arfield (take advantage of good upcoming fixture list for Burnley)?

So, one of Fabs or Sterling is going to have to make way. If not now for Sanchez, then in a couple of weeks for Walcott. Which would you keep?

I think I'd fear not having Sterling the most. Cesc can tap me with assist jabs, but I'd fear a big hook from Sterling with the greater goal threat. I reckon I could (eventually) match Cesc's 6/7 pts a week with one of Chelsea's defenders too, saving 3m.

    Sound about right?

I agree with your conclusion, although I don't know that having a Chelsea defender should factor into the decision. Sterling over Cesc for me.

Fabregas has been ridiculously consistent and that without adding goals to his locker. As soon as he gets on a scoring run and resumes being the scoring midfielder he's always been, people are going to regret it. I would keep Fab.

Guys, would like to bring in Sanchez, Aguero and a decent keeper but wondering which looks best to prioritise:

    a) Sterling and Ivanovic - Sanchez and Chambers
    b) Welbeck and ADM - Aguero and Amalfitano
    c) Welbeck, ADM and Ivanovic - Aguero, Mane and Chambers (4 point hit)
    d) Begovic - De Gea

    I have 2FT and 0.5 ITB

    Begovic, McCarthy

    Ivanovic, Baines, Clyne, Duff, Moore

    ADM, Fabregas, Sterling, Sigurdsson, Boyd

    Costa, Pelle, Welbeck

Aguero to Costa and Fabregas to Hazard.

But in all seriousness you'd need a heck of an overhaul to afford either of them. You could swap Baines for a cheapy and might have the cash to bring Haz or Costa in for ADM, Tadic or Welbz. Personally I would take out Welbeck for Costa, if any way possible.

Okay I've used one of my 2 FT's this week - what do I do with my other?

Do I change Begovic to Adrian, or change good old benchwarmer Albrighton for Boyd?

Albrighton is just chilling but Begovic is starting to be a bit useless and is in danger of dropping so i'm swaying towards him going.

    Thoughts?

    Baines bertrand moore (hutton duff)
    Fabregas tadic siggy adm albrighton
    Aguero pelle costa

I can drop aguero and albrighton for sanchez and berahino. Any thoughts?

Don't disrupt that strikeforce combination. Aguero, Pelle, Costa is the best in the game. If you really need Sanchez you have to drop Baines or ADM to build up the cash. Alternatively dropping Siggy for another 4.5ish midfielder might give you the cash needed to swap Tadic out for Sanchez.
