Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 11

As always during international breaks, the treatment tables around the country tend to be that little bit busier as the knocks and niggles escalate. Once again, we scour the weekend’s match reports and press conferences and take stock on the latest batch of injury worries.

Aston Villa
Nathan Baker kept his place in the Villa XI despite the availability of Philippe Senderos away to West Ham on Saturday. The centre-half limped out of the proceedings midway through the second-half, however, with Paul Lambert going on to say:

“I thought Nathan was excellent. I really did. He put his head on everything and defended very strongly with Ron. It was a big performance from him and hopefully his knee is okay.”

Chelsea
Jose Mourinho started with both Ramires and Cesc Fabregas in midfield as the Blues came from behind to see off Liverpool at Anfield. The Brazilian was replaced just after the break, however, and, whilst Fabregas managed the full 90 minutes, their manager revealed both played through the pain barrier, with Mourinho expecting Fabregas to play no part in Spain’s upcoming internationals:

“Ramires and Fabregas both played injured. Maybe the team will lose them for a match or two now but they put themselves there for the team, like I am sure others will in the future because the spirit of the team is fantastic. Fabregas has a hamstring injury, Ramires is the same thing [groin] as before but he knew for my plan it was important for him to start the game. Fabregas is a fantastic professional and he gambled and I gambled. He can join up with Spain but if he does he will be back.”

Andre Schurrle has withdrawn from the Germany squad earlier today due to illness.

Everton
The Toffees have issues in central midfield after yesterday’s draw against Sunderland. Gareth Barry was stretchered off with a leg injury and, after the match, Roberto Martinez confirmed the former Villa man is set for x-rays:

“As he fell, Gareth is stretching his leg and he gets caught. He is having an X-ray on his tibia.””

Martinez also went on to reveal that James McCarthy picked up a hamstring injury against the Black Cats:

“It is a concern, he needs assessing and hopefully it is just fatigue.”

Hull
The injury worries in defence continued for Steve Bruce last weekend. Hull travelled to Burnley without the likes of Michael Dawson and Alex Bruce and, having made all three substitutions early in the second-half, the Tigers boss had to finish the match with 10 men after Curtis Davies was forced off through injury:

“Curtis has a back problem, but we’re not quite sure what at this stage.”

Manchester City
Edin Dzeko lasted just four minutes of the weekend draw at QPR before limping off with a calf injury. Benched yet again as Manuel Pellegrini rolled out a lone striker system, the Bosnian entered the proceedings on 64 minutes only to limp back down the tunnel just a few moments later. Dzeko has since withdrawn from the Bosnia squad earlier today, with reports earlier this evening suggesting he could be sidelined for three weeks.

Man United
Louis van Gaal confirmed that Paddy McNair was subbed off late on during United’s win over Palace due to cramp, allaying any fears of another injury concern for the Old Trafford outfit.

Newcastle
Steven Taylor missed yesterday’s win at West Brom due to injury, as Alan Pardew opted for Paul Dummett at centre-half alongside Fabricio Coloccini, despite the availability of fit-again Mike Williamson. The latter replaced the Argentine late in the second-half, however, after Coloccini was forced off with a knock on 78 minutes.

QPR
The R’s midfielder Sandro picked up yet another injury problem during the weekend draw with City. Having played the full 90 minutes just twice since arriving at Loftus Road, the Brazilian was replaced by Joey Barton at half-time after picking up a hamstring problem.

Southampton
Midfielder Steven Davis failed to make it to half-time in the weekend win over Leicester. After the match, Ronald Koeman was optimistic on the Northern Ireland international’s chances of a quick recovery:

“He had a little feeling in his hamstring and I hope it will not be really an injury, one or two weeks, but tomorrow we can make the scan and say something more about that.”

Stoke
Mark Hughes is sweating on the fitness of two of his first-choice back-four as we head into the international break, after both Phil Bardsley and Marc Wilson were forced off early during yesterday’s win at Spurs.

Swansea
Garry Monk was without a trio of players for the Swans’ 2-1 win over Arsenal yesterday. Centre-half Federico Fernandez was absent with a calf complaint, whilst wide men Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer were also unavailable due to groin injuries.

Tottenham
Mauricio Pochettino played down injury fears after Danny Rose needed to take on an oxygen mask at the end of yesterday’s home loss to Stoke:

“[He] took a kick to the chest. He is okay.”

West Brom
Sebastien Pocognoli was replaced at the break during the Baggies home loss to Newcastle after picking up a muscle injury. The left-back has since withdrawn from the Belgium squad earlier today, with reports suggesting he could be out for up to three weeks.

West Ham
Speaking to the press after Saturday’s goalless draw against Villa, Sam Allardyce admitted he gambled with Winston Reid’s fitness and played the centre-half for the full 90 minutes despite a slight recurrence of the problem that forced him off on 23 minutes away to Stoke in the previous Gameweek:

“I wanted to bring Winston Reid off because he was feeling his thigh a bit, but at that point I just felt he had to stay on for us to go and get the winner. I wanted to put Andy on rather than change Reidy for James Tomkins, so I hope Winston’s alright.”

    Who will score more?

    A) Siggy (CPL QPR)
    B) ADM (HUL STO)

Hull and Stoke have conceded quite few goals away from home, and United did struggle to score against Palace who have conceded 2nd highest away from home... ADM isn't a gimmie at all with Siggy's plum fixtures (against the two worst away teams) in mind!

From what I have seen, Palace and QPR aren't good at defending set pieces, so Sigurdsson has a chance of getting points through them while Hull and Stoke are fine at defending them.
Dont know how many points they will get from open play 🙂 Hopefully both get points in those fixtures

I'm kind of stuck in my planning. On the one hand I think Siggy will outscore ADM, and going for him instead of ADM means I don't need a -4 hit on Pelle>Zamora, but then I have a selection headache... and when I do downgrade Pelle I'm left with a mountain of cash...

My team could be full of the cheaper guys... oscar-siggy-sterling-downing-austin, along with sanchez and aguero...

...but i'll also be 0.3 short on clyne>3.9 and pelle>costa... plus the selection dilemma im left with then, without a clear bencher

Was in similar situation for around 6-7GWs, didn't knew what to do, no plans, was just making random moves. Now, I atleast know what kind of team I want in next few weeks. Deciding formation should be priority with so many options around.
You can get Downing instead of Sigurdsson, not a bad option.

                    I have Downing already. 🙂

I'm gonna do one of three things in GW13:

                    1. Tadic>Siggy... 1.3 left for GW14 where I'll save FT
                    2. Pelle>Costa + Tadic>Boyd (-4) (+Clyne>Azpi GW14)
                    3. Pelle>Zamora + Tadic>ADM (-4) (+Clyne>Coleman GW14)

Thankfully I'll have a GW to consider my targets 🙂

Yes it does. But then I'm thinking that Siggy presents much better value than ADM, with amazing fixtures all the way until Jan.10th, while ADM has Saints away and Liverpool right after HUL and STO...

Siggy's value opens so many doors, and I feel like he'll probably have a price rush in gw13 after his poor fixtures...

I'm just looking at Benteke... his fixtures when he comes back from suspension are absolutely lovely

                        lol, bit confusing situation 😀
If you do Pelle to Zamora and Tadic to Sigurdsson, it gives 4.9m. With this cash, you can upgrade Austin to Benteke, Oscar to Walcott and Sterling to Maria(optional) giving you...
                        Sanchez, Maria, Walcott, Sigurdsson, Downing
Aguero, Benteke (Zamora) plus enough cash for Clyne to Azpi(if my calculation is right 😉 ).

Haha, thanks for the mathematical analysis, much appreciated.

I don't think Austin>Benteke is much of an upgrade right now.
Oscar has better fixtures and form than walcott, and i think sterling will be great in the next 5.

I wouldn't take a hit on Pelle>Zamora either just for the sake of it, but rather just bench Pelle against City if I still had him (since my other guys all have better fixtures and form)

Not a correct statement... Many got rid for cheaper strikers that didn't score well, yes.
This money was spent elsewhere by many, such as upgrades to Sanchez who scored well in during Costas absence.
I don't believe that many have sold Costa for 3-5m cheaper FWDs and kept the money in the bank..

Are any Pelle owners considering roughing it out and holding onto him through the tough fixtures? He's still good value at 8.5, and I got him at 7.6 so would lose 0.5 of that rise! City ars MUN are still fixtures he could score in...

I have Pelle, Aguero and Costa up front. I will hold on to Pelle since I got him in at 7.6 too. Who knows, Southampton may surprise us all thru the tough fixtures. But the only worry is the Pelle has had 0 shots on target in the last 3 gameweeks (scary!)

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years

yeah that is a bit worrying, but he did get 2 assists, and if you look at the last 4 matches, thats 2g+3a, which is an excellent return. Ditto for Tadic with 1g 4a, even though they all came in the same game!

It makes more sense for me to hold onto him, and I think i can absorb a 0.1 drop without losing TV. Worried about the herd selling en masse though. It crippled sterlings value, and i'd hate for that to happen again with Pelle.

Hoping that he scores a brace against Villa to prove the sellers wrong!

Forget a brace, one goal is enough. And I am not convinced by Welbeck, Sakho, Ennar, Berahino or Austin. So I will keep Pelle and hope he doesn't drop like a ton of bricks.

      Welbeck>Austin/Sakho is popular this week.

Where would you spend 1.3m 1FT on this team, in GW14?

    Krul Begovic
    Baines Clyne Chambers Naylor Wisdom
    Sanchez Siggy Sterling Oscar Downing
    Aguero Pelle Austin

    Ideas...
    - Oscar/Sterling > Walcott/Ramsey
    - Downing > Chadli
    - Pelle > Lukaku/Balotelli

0.3 short of Clyne>Coleman unfortunately, though Begovic>Foster (-4) could fix that I guess.

i wasn't a fan, given his swansea performance. but as i said below it just made sense for my team to do fab>sanchez. I have Oscar and will probably get Costa, so Fab was expendable, especially due to diminishing statistical potential

    Krul McCarthy
    Alderweireld Baines Naylor Lovren Chambers
    Siggy Downing ADM Hazard Fabregas
    Pelle welbeck Perez

Brought in Perez already this week. £4.4m in bank

oh damn, didn't realize that there was no aguero in there. thats mental. with that midfield you should probably stick to 352 obviously.

Lovren>downgrade, use the cash on welbeck>costa or pelle>aguero?

        Thanks.
Have spent eight on doing Lovren and Welbeck to Aguero and dummett
Next week will consider costa in for pelle and ditching Hazard for Chadli

I had a nine point lead in mini league so figure the spend worth it long term?!

Yeah i think aguero is gonna outscore welbeck and lovren... in fact i KNOW he will. Even if he gets injured you just do Aguero>Costa/Sturridge and you're sorted.

Not convinced by Chadli fwiw, his 28% conversion rate is unsustainable imo. So is Costa's 35% lol

            Definitely think Aguero over Costa
Not sure what to do regarding Sanchez. I might actually prefer him to Costa. Also I am tempted with Sturridge once he is back and Sterling might then become an option again. Lovren has been dog poo!

His current price tag makes him not as essential as Ramsey was last season. He's a great pick for sure.

when you have a midfielder player striker for arsenal and getting double digits every week, including the 3baps when he does f-all in a game (1 shot, 2 touches in the box!) then its cause to sit up and do something about it.

Tbh though, i wasn't too fussed about sanchez until i realised that i had enough money to do fabregas>sanchez and the yellow flag was on fabregas... then my research made it a no-brainer, with or without the fab "injury"

    Forster / Gilks
Jags Wisdom Vlaar / Wilson PVA
Siggy Hazard Downing Tadic / Boyd
    Costa Pelle Aguero

    Have 1FT.

    Tadic to Wally next GW?
    PVA to Yun
    Jags to Baines

Which would leave me with something like 0.5m ITB, should I be concerned about this as I will not be able to upgrade on Downing if needed?

Well I made a Rainy Day League, since we have a lot of rainy day ahead, so I'll just give you a quiet reminder of the code:

    104815-709859

This is a league in which you must have 10mil in the bank at all times, and it must be a new team.

Since we can't have multiple teams, and TM reminded me that FPLtowers are watching this forum, I suggest you do not set up a new team for yourself, but instead ask your grandma, uncle, or perhaps your pet dog to set up a team. You could of course be an integral part of their selection process. It has been suggested, however, that dogs are pretty good with electronic devices such as XBox Ones, so you may not need help at all.

I had actually given up on the idea but since 2 people have already joined up (presumably pet dogs), it would seem rude not to proceed.

Morning Felas , Choose the best for long Term no just for this GW ?

    A- ADM & Pelle & Dowing > Chadli & Aguero & 4.3 M mid player for - 8 pts

    B- ADM & Pelle > Wanyama & Aguero for - 4 pts

    C- FAB & Pelle > Wanyama & Ageuro

Selling the house for a player who could pull his hamstring 5 minutes from now is a bit mental. ADM, Pelle, and Downing are all solid long-term picks.

Thats not to say Aguero isn't important, I just don't think he's -8 and adm+pelle+downing important

maybe skip the downing > chadli part, and just stick to -4 if you're still keen though

The plan is to get Costa in this week, what's the best way to do it?

    A) Di Maria / Fabregas & Sakho OUT, Boyd & Costa IN
    B) Di Maria / Fabregas & Pelle OUT, Chadli & Costa IN

A feels better long term but B has less chance of screwing me over this week since lots of rivals have Pelle.

      Squad is:

      Aguero, Pelle, Sakho

The trouble is that if Chadli rises (tonight?) then I'll be priced out of the Fabregas move.

The random Costa rise last night screwed me over. I'd also like to leave 0.2 in the bank for Begovic to Fabianksi.

I'd like to get Coleman in at gw14 though, but unfortunately I'm currently 0.3 short on Clyne>Coleman after Tadic>Siggy :/

So I just fiddled about with my team for the Rainy Day League (Where you need 10mil in the bank at all times) and I got quite a nice squad. Austin and Sakho really make things possible on the cheap!

Hard to squeeze all three of Sanchez, Aguero and Baines in though, that's for sure!

Here's my current effort. 10.1 mil in the bank:

      Foster Krul
      Baines Chambers (Wisdom Yun Saylor)
      Sanchez Downing Chadli (Boyd Ameobi)
      Aguero Sakho Austin

Would need to bench 3/5 of those in brackets, meaning a fair few cheapies on the pitch! Maybe one of baines/ sanchez needs to be dropped, really!

Anyway definitely fun to fiddle with.
