Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Monday

Villa and Southampton share the Monday night spoils in a 1-1 draw at the midlands. Gabby Agbonlahor grabs his third of the season before a late Nathaniel Clyne strike denies the hosts all three points.

Agbonlahor the Villains’ Hero
The frontman capitalised on an error from Fraser Forster to notch his first goal since Gameweek 4 last night. Agbonlahor’s pace posed the Saints backline problems aplenty during the first period in particular and his strike means he’s now scored 50% (three of six) of his side’s goals this season. Given that Villa have netted just twice in the last eight matches, they’ll need to do far more to persuade us of investing – with Burnley, Palace, Leicester and West Brom in the next four, though, the fixtures are on their side, whilst Christian Benteke’s return from suspension in Gameweek 14 against the Eagles should help Paul Lambert’s cause.

Saints Full-Backs in the Points
Despite conceding for the first time in five league matches, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand still delivered for their Fantasy owners in the Villa Park encounter. The duo’s attacking forays proved vital for the Saints’ equaliser as Clyne lashed home his second goal of the season thanks to Bertrand’s cutback from the left – the duo now sit second and third for defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

With 32% and 22% ownership respectively, Clyne and Bertrand are amongst the four most popular defenders in the FPL game but as the fixtures now take a turn for the worse, many are weighing up their options. Given that Ronald Koeman’s side face City, Arsenal, United and Everton in the next five Gameweeks now, the full-backs will need to continue their attacking raids, with defensive returns looking far less certain.

Tadic and Pelle Stumble Again
Hopes were high for the popular Southampton pair after the likes of Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos and Nathan Baker were ruled out through injury in the heart of the Villa defence. Pelle had one of his poorest matches of the season, however, and fired just a single attempt on goal – he has now failed to register one shot on target in the last four Gameweeks and with the likes of Charlie Austin, Danny Inga and Wilfried Bony appearing on our radars, last night could prove his farewell bow in many Fantasy teams. The second most popular forward in the FPL game with 31% ownership, Pelle’s appeal is also dampened by the fact he remains on four yellow cards – just one caution shy of a single-match ban.

Tadic’s place in our squads is also uncertain. After blanking in seven of the first 11 Gameweeks, he needed a big performance last night to stay in our Fantasy plans – another lacklustre blank suggests there’d be no surprise to see him appear amongst the most transferred out before the next deadline is upon us.

Bertrand and Welbeck -> Yun and Costa (-4)? Will then do Tadic and Wisdom -> Downing and Azpi over the next 2 weeks.

    Good moves?

Meerrrhhh, yeah not bad moves imo but the idea of a defender and -4 don't go well.

Also - Plans rarely work out how you want them to in FPL

Yes, the -4 is really for Welbeck to Costa though, the first transfer is necessary to raise the cash. I could just do Welbeck to Bony, but I already have Siggy, and would want to ditch Bertrand soon anyway.

Yeah, the Downing injury is a problem, but that's just forward thinking - I'd want to do this week's moves regardless. The problem is the lack of options in that price bracket with Chadli and Downing out.

What about this for a short term tranny?

    Downing to Valencia

(I'm working on the assumption that Downing won't play and Valencia will!)

    Any advice?

Best Chadli replacement if confirmed out, max price 6.7m?

    Rest of team is:

    DDG (Gilks)
Baines Naylor Hutton (Clyne / Wisdom)
    Fab Siggy Sanchez Chadli (Wanyama)
    Costa Kun Austin

    1FT, 0.2 ITB

I'm thinking this GW I would prefer Clyne over any midfielder at 6.7m or less, so might just save FT.

    Good decision?

Imo, Costa. At 11m he's not as essential as people are saying, especially when players like Bony, Rooney, Ings, Austin, etc are scoring the same points

Exactly. Downing is my 8th midfielder though, so I'll probably just hold onto him.

Pelle>Ings to open up funds looks like a smart move right now though, and would perhaps allow me to do Downing>Eriksen for example.

        I'm very much leaning towards that -8 hit we discussed (Tadic>Haz + Pelle>Ings) 🙂

I made the same moves Rick, except for the fact that I went with Kane 😀

          Not convinced by Ings, really.

Compare their stats and average positions in the last two games:

          http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/755422/

I wouldn't want my centre forward to be playing on the half way line (which is one of the reasons I didn't go for the Bony route as well). And yes, he is nailed on, at least for the next 3 game weeks.

But Kane though, hmm... i can't really afford to pick a rotation risk player with bad immediate fixtures now that Downing is out. If Downing was fit I could take the risk though...

Thanks for the kind words Rick. 🙂
It's amazing how both of us end up with similar dilemmas almost every week. 😀

Everton at home is not a poor defensive fixture. If you believe that they struggle after Europa, don't forget that Everton will be coming on the back of Europa League action too. If I were in your position, I would get Kane and replace Downing next week with the extra funds.

The thing is though, I'm not under pressure to replace Downing, as I can wait his injury out. The only way he becomes a problem for me is if I have another of my front 8 getting injured/dropped/rotated/suspended... and thats a big reason why i want to avoid Kane right now. Perhaps he'll be an option to replace one of austin or ings when the fixtures dry up though..

To each to his own, my friend. 🙂

One thing I'd like to mention though is that the rumors are that Downing's injury is long term. With December approaching and fixtures coming thick and fast, you might want to sort him out first, next week. 🙂

Yeah, he'll be my transfer next week if he's out long-term. Not worth moving this week though I don't think, unless i have a raft of CL injuries

If I got Kane instead of Ings, that would leave me with 2.9 itb, which with Downing sat at 5.8 would only be enough for an 8.7, and apart from Oscar (who I have already) and Sterling (who i just sold) I can't see anyone I want in that bracket who I couldn't have if I got ings... though i'd probably be 0.1 short of Eriksen haha

You know what? I think there's several reasons why kane would be more advanced there...

            1. Spurs played 40 mins against 10 men Hull, totally skewing Kane's position. If you only look at 11v11 then Kane would also be much, much further back.

            2. Ings touches in the box and shots on target are better than Kane.

            3. They both played Stoke - but, crucially, Spurs played the counter-attacking away-Stoke, who would have allowed Spurs up the pitch, whereas Burnley played at the Britannia and were much the underdog.

            4. Ings is on penalties.

            5. Kane plays EVE che next two, Ings plays AVL NEW qpr (and whilst that Newcastle defense is in pieces due to injuries btw!)

You still haven't convinced me 😉

Obviously Ings' stats would be better but simply because he has played more minutes than Kane. Yes Ings is on penalties, but I would argue that the 1 million extra is too heavy a price to pay for someone who is on penalties for BURNLEY!
Don't forget that Kane is on some of the direct free kicks too.

EVE is not a bad fixture my friend. I can see goals in that one. After the Chelsea fixture, it is CPL,swa,BUR,lei for Kane

Minute per chance: 28.8 for Ings vs 22.6 for Kane.

Goal attempt in box: 39.4 ings vs 39.5 kane

                  Not alot in it.

I'm going to break it down again to be concise:

                1. Last season Spurs vs Everton finished 0-0 and 1-0, and its historically not a fixture that throws up lots of goals: http://www.tottenhamhotspur-mad.co.uk/head_to_head/everton/vs/tottenham_hotspur/index.shtml

                2. The 0.9m extra isn't just for penalties. Its also for the fact that he's 100% nailed on, and has better fixtures.

                3. They have the same per-minute stats in the last 4 games. Kane's are skewed by playing against 10 men for half a game though. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/forwards/kpi-attacking/

                4. Over all games this season, Kane does have better per-minute stats, nice. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/forwards/kpi-attacking/ However, the one that stands out is the "starts" column. Not sure his better stats are worth the risk. Hmm

                  1) Well, I could argue that in 2012/13 Spurs and Everton played twice against each other.

                  -Tottenham 2-2 Everton

                  http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/21986330

                  -Everton 2-1 Tottenham

                  http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/20571828

The trend did not continue last season. What makes you think it will continue this season? 😉

                  2) Kane is 100% nailed on and has the better fixtures imo. When you are looking to get a striker, you should look at it in the slight longer term (4 or 6 fixtures) rather than the next 2 only

                  3) I think you are forgetting that Burnley were up against 10 man Hull, last week as well.

                  4) This is basically the same argument that you pointed out in 2).

One point I'dd like to add here:

                  5) Attacking stats for the last 4 game weeks:

                  -Shots inside the box
                  TOT 33 BUR 21

                  -Big chances
                  TOT 12 BUR 7

I generally don't like speculating about fixtures historically being high-scoring or not, as there's so many factors.. last season was under AVB for example for one of the games, who played boring defensive football for example.. so lets just ignore that stuff.

Didn't realise Burnley played vs 10 as well.

Those 6 GW fixtures do look nice actually. If only Downing wasn't injured then I could get Kane and just bench him a couple of weeks.

Will see how he would fit into my rotation 😉 Thanks

I just checked my rotation, and I don't think Kane works well at all for me. Here's why: Clashes clashes clashes!

                        - Kane vs Everton clashes with Baines.
                        - I want to bench Austin in GW14 at swansea (since I am playing Naylor), and that is messed up if I have to drop Kane(che) instead that week.
                        - Downing injured means that I can't drop anyone else, and I'm not to keen on Kane at Chelsea.

Also, I'm very wary of Spurs attack given their EL history - they always totally suck afterl EL games.

When Chadli is back Kane might not be the focal point of the attack anymore, and also has Adebayor and Soldado to contend with for minutes.

His price and stats are great, but not for me right now. I still think I prefer a 3 week (AVL NEW qpr) punt on Ings, and after that Kane will have proven his nailed-on ness and has good fixtures. I don't mind using a FT on Ings>Kane after getting the 3 nice fixtures Ings has.

                      4. rickardinho

                        9 years, 5 months ago

With that in mind, I think I'm pretty set on doing Tadic>Hazard and Pelle>Ings for (-8), once the CL games are out of the way of course.

It gives me 100% nailed on players for the december spurt, whereas I don't think Kane would start 3 in a row in a week while Adebayor and Soldado are both rested.. key thing to consider. I think Adebayor might actually play that Chelsea game in fact as its the midweek one.

I think (-8) sounds mental, but I would captain Hazard(sun) and I really don't want to go without him now that his stats are great. Keeping Pelle could also be an option... but then I'd need to find 0.3 cash elsewhere instead... but thats for another discussion i guess!

This is a great debate though, and I'm certainly getting more aware of Kane as an option. 2.9itb instead of 2.0 would certainly come in handy I have to say. It opens up Chambers>Coleman/Ivanovic for example, though I could probably settle for Cahill/Terry/Azpi though

Great Hot Topic by Jonty earlier. I'm currently faffing around the 100k mark and am not really getting anywhere by playing safe so I've decided to change up my strategy to focus on goal scoring mids. Going to be a high risk high reward approach from now on!

    - Costa > Rooney
    - Downing > Hazard

    Leaves me with this:

    Forster
    Baines Chambers 4.5 Duff Moore
    Sanchez Fab Hazard Siggy Boyd
    Aguero Rooney Austin

    N.B. If this doesn't work I blame Jonty 😀

Best under 5.5 defender for Xmas season?

Get a rotation that has 4 decent fixtures per week to cover injury and rotation, rather than targeting specific players.

Without knowing your rotation though I'd say Janmaat at 5.2 is pretty solid. Caulker at 4.7 with his fixtures is decent value too. Or you can money up and go with Azpi

Shipping Pelle and Downing maybe out , so looking at ManU cover + cheapies.

Which is worth a -4, and captaining against Hull:

    A) Rooney

    B) AdM

Can't believe I'm actually strongly considering fellaini as my chadli/Moses/downing replacement.

    Anyone else?

Two great games, good stats, seems nailed on. My worry is red cards and a lurking herrera. Plus I don't like him at all.

Rumour that Herrera may leave in Jan so might not be a threat; I would sooner go for Valencia than Fellaini.

I am now seriosly considering Costa and Tadic to Bony and Fabregas/Sanchez.

I agree, Swansea attacking threat hasn't been as great as first thought. But there is the opposition to take into account

Becareful of Bony, monk seems to like subbing him off early for Gomis

i have downing and his injury of cos affect me last gw but somehow i m optimistic of my situation becos i have all along planned to swoop him for hazard.

Not sure how downing owners are going to replace him with 6m being an awkward price and many would have re-invested the fund. Some might need to take a hit and some might choose to bench him which might resort them to playing 433 or a poor 5th mid for those with cheap bench

    Pelle
    Bertrand
    Chadli
    Silva
    Downing
    Duff
    Moore
    Albrighton

or just use my WC this week

Yun looking like one of the more promising cheap defenders?

I'm looking for a Moore replacement, budget around 4.5m.

Already have Krul so don't fancy doubling up with Janmaat or Dummett.
