The ScoutCast – Episode 144 – Squeaky

It’s “squeaky bum time” in the ScoutCast studio as Granville continues to chip away at my previously “unassailable” mini-league lead. My co-host stumbled through an injury-strewn Gameweek 12 with the honours, leaving me trailing and worrying that he’ll have clawed it all back by Christmas.

Pressing on, we flog the Hazard vs Fabregas debate once again and run the rule over a cast of budget strikers, desperately searching for the optimum way to spend the two transfers burning holes in our pockets.

We asses the week’s transfer bandwagons, look ahead to Gameweek 13 and take time out to tease Jonty on his Di Maria u-turn. We then combine “powers” to terrifying effect and prepare the ScoutCast XI for their Fantasy Football Scout Cup qualifying round, having flexed its muscles to the tune of a 59-point Gameweek 12. Intimidating stuff.

    DZ!! A bit of assistance...

    Forster (McCarthy)
    Baines*, Ivan, Naylor (Chambers, Duff*)
Di Maria, Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy (Boyd)
    Aguero, Austin, Sakho*

    1 FT, 0.1m

Could be missing 3 players this week but luckily I have a strong bench, should I save? Ideally I want to change Forster to Adrian or Fabianski but I really want to get Caulker in for his fixtures and added goal threat too.

That's a pretty small sample though, over the season he is number 1 or 2 for shots in the box I believe (13). Admittedly a lot of those chances were headed attempts so the conversion rate is going to be lower than say Ivanovic. Maybe Duff > Yun makes more sense but it's not a very exciting trade!

Think you're onto something sorting sorting by shots on target as Caulker only has two so therefore his goal threat may now be all it's cracked up to be. But four games isn't a big enough sample IMO, very few goalscorers on that list and Terry is top with 3 SoT but hasn't scored either.

Found it! Had to go a fair way back! I'll post it here:

            @Doosra:

            Caulker this season among defenders:
            - 4th for touches in the box (5th in last 6 games)
            - 2nd for attempts and shots in the box (behind Ivan)
            - since Vargas started taking set pieces his number of chances (and quality of them) seem to have increased.

Next 4 home games (in the next 7 gw's): BUR WBA CPL LEI
            - Ranked 1st, 4th, 5th, and 8th respectively in last 6 GW's in most chances conceded from set pieces.

If you consider an acceptable points-per-million-per-game, then 0.8 (which is the difference between yun and caulker) is a worthwhile investment should Caulker score just 1 goal (and get 6pts+baps). Stats indicate that he could very well get more than 1 goal, and its also pertinent that Yun could be gone in gw19-20 for the CPL & SWA games, which would cause a rotation problem if you owned him.

I think for 4.7 it's pretty low risk pre-Evans with all the Yun owners a goal or two could be a big differential! You getting him Rick?

I made the decision to boot Baines last week and bought in Azpi as my expensive defender. I wouldn't want a non-playing third forward.

I'd do Baines and Sacko for Azpi and Costa.

I need some good advice. Do not want to take a point hit, so only like to do 1 transfer. Which is the better option, Forster > Adrian or Pelle > Bony? I still could afford another 0.1 drop in Pelle and will still sell him at the same price.

    1 FT, 3.2 in bank

    Forster
    Baines Chambers Naylor
    Sanchez Hazard Siggy Downing
    Aguero Pelle Austin

    McCarthy Boyd Hutton Bertrand

Nah, in all seriousness, I don't think you should be too worried. I think Siggy offers value which is too good to be ignored, but as Swansea have shown this season they don't create a whole lot of chances, so they're unlikely to score more than 1 or 2 goals.

I can see the value in in-form players such as Siggy and Bony particularly with their fixtures, which is why I have them (still considering the Pelle -> Bony transfer), but I don't think they're in anyway essential.

Nothing you didn't already know anyway 😛

Ahh the lofty days of top 100 post GW2 😀

It seems however that you have fared significantly better in the interim. A combination of selling Costa (as you did I seem to recall :P), and perhaps more potent - not owning aguero so far this season - has contributed to my failings. I've been fluctuating between 20K to 70K pretty much every week.

That being said, hope springs eternal, and the quest for a top 10K finish continues.

Congratulations on your very respectable season thus far!

Selling Costa was a killer wasn't it? I think you should find a way to get Aguero in though, his form is crazy and a brace from him in any week and you'll probably end up with a red arrow.

I've got no doubt you'll get back up to where you belong though, still plenty of the season left. Cheers mate, I'm taking a -8 this week so if that goes tits up then I could drop massively 😆

            Look,
You make good points, but you must take into account the three really tough fixtures they had that usually not only cause players to perform less well due to individual opposition strength, but cause the entire team to play different due to their coach being cautious etc.

Been reading some of the discussion on hazard earlier today.

I feel like people are missing the point. Doesn't the fact that he only scores at home and often in easier fixtures make him an ideal captaincy choice...when he is playing at home against an easier team.

Flat track bullies are the best captaincy choices, not the ones who fire a brace at the bridge.

Hazard seems like he more consistently gets his points in the easier home fixtures where as others e.g fab spread them out more for the same number of points. I may try and prove this with my first ever piece of research though more likely I'll be too lazy and anyway someone somewhere will have already done this. Link please 🙂

    My defence is

Baines (tot - and probably injured)
    Bertrand (MCI)
    Duff (potentially injured)
    Moore (lost his place)
    Dummet (whu)

Would you take -4 to do Moore to yun or Rangel?

United fan here too. Looks like Falcao will be back. If he starts RvP with him then Rooney drops deep and AdM goes wing I believe. I would be surprised if he does not get 2 assists and possibly a goal later on in the game if he starts drifting inside.

On the other hand he could be rested to give Mata a game. Isn't FF such fun 😉

Sakho -> Berahino next week for this nice run of fixtures. I would get rid of him this week but Berahino is playing Arsenal and I don't like Austin too much. Boyd can cover for one week because he's playing against Villa.

    Current team

    Krul Elliot
    Baines Clyne Chambers Wisdom Saylor
    Sanchez AdM Sigurdsson Downing Marney
    Costa Aguero Pelle

Baines, AdM, Pelle > Yun, Hazard, Rooney (-4)

0.7 for Clyne > Azpi in the future if I decide to.

Rio has no effect on Yun.

Yun is nailed on as our left back.

Rio is a centre back. But its true he should be left back. Left back in the dressing room while the rest of the lads are on the pitch.

    Doos,
I did not mean to belittle the work you do with the stats tables - it's really good and enlightening many times, however, when there are such good or bad fixtures tables don't take those things into account and you should be cautious with the results.
Now, I'm not saying thee is a need to donate an organ in order to buy siggy, but to actually go and sell him, before fixtures go complete 180, is In my humble opinion an over reliance on imperfect data - tableitis if you want...

    1. Mull
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

I think it was in the 5 weeks before Arsenal and City he only had 2 shots or something close to that which is rubbish for someone considering essential by some.

      1. Billy Gilmore
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

You don't need to shoot to be a good option, especially at that price. People have been saying the same thing about Fabregas all season and he's still the 2nd highest scoring mid.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

If you watch swans play, he is pivotal to what they do. It does not always result in shots, but he is capable of assists and goals on good games, and from a 6.7 mid it's more than you can hope for. Now, I did not say essential to buy - but selling him now before such good fixtures is a bit over the top.

Austin for fixtures. Good home games against fellow cellar dwellers between now and January.

    Hi guys,
    My current squad is:

    Forster 4.0
    Chambers Wisdom Bardsley Dummett Naylor
    Fab Siggy AdM Sanchez Boyd
    Aguero Costa Austin

    1FT 1.2 in bank

I want to use my free to get Chelsea defence in. Which is better:

    A) Forster -> Courtois
    B) Bardsley -> Azpi

Obviously keeping Forster seems better than keeping Bardsley, but then I can rotate Bardsley, whereas Forster has to play every week.

    Thoughts?

B - I would expect Forsterbto outscore Bardsley and Azpi to outscore Courtois

Bu the thing is I would barely play Bardsley, as I can rotate him. So it's really Forster v 3rd best defender each week.

Then it depends on the third best defender 😆

Go for Hutton or Yun then.

Creswell Yun, Rangel in that order imo.

McNair good short-term only as will probably lose his place with Rojo and Evans on the way back and I don't think Caulkers attacking threat is enough to justify the price premium over Yun.

Those getting Yun..aren't you worried about him going to the Asia Cup?

It's a negative for sure but he'll be here until the New Year and that's 7 or 8 games.
