Captain Sensible – Gameweek 16

Our weekly members article focussing on the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this Friday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

As Fantasy managers reassess their options in light of Sergio Aguero’s knee injury, Diego Costa has emerged as the number one candidate ahead of Chelsea’s home encounter with Hull. The Spain international has earned 36% of the votes cast so far and has scored in all but one of his six home appearances, with only QPR keeping him at bay.

Eden Hazard is hot on Costa’s heels, though. The wide man has received over 27% of the votes after scoring in each of the last four in front of his own fans – Hazard has averaged 10 points per appearance over those fixtures and has collected 10 bonus points, whereas Costa has failed to earn bonus at home since Gameweek 4.

Man City pair Yaya Toure (6%) and Edin Dzeko (3%) are also in contention ahead of a trip to Leicester. Toure has now netted in three of his last four, and with Aguero out of the picture, has dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal – as evidenced by last weekend’s spot-kick winner over Everton. Having just returned from injury, Dzeko will be looking to improve upon a series of displays which have seen him score in only one of his 11 league appearances so far.

Alexis Sanchez has collected 5% of the votes ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with a Newcastle side hit hard by injuries and suspension – a single goal in four since being moved back to the flank is hardly reassuring, though a midweek rest from Champions League duties could re-energise the Chilean. Robin van Persie is also back on the radar. The Dutchman’s brace at St Mary’s on Monday means he’s now bagged three goals and an assist in his last three ahead of a derby encounter at home to Liverpool.

Going on the voting so far, then, both Romelu Lukaku and Wilfried Bony look ideal differentials for Gameweek 16, with around 2% backing them with the armband. Lukaku has scored (and earned bonus) in each of his last four starts at Goodison ahead of QPR’s visit, whilst Bony welcomes Spurs to the Liberty in phenomenal form, after serving up seven goals and an assist in his last nine appearances.

So I decided to spread the Aguero funds to ensure a good squad over xmas with cash to spare :

    Forster
    Baines Azpi Hutton
Hazard (C) Sanchez Yaya Eriksen Siggy
    Sakho Bony

    Elliot/Moore/Duff/Austin 2.5itb

Did I make the right decision???

You didn't write what tranfers did you made. But squad is looking good. Just Moore and Duff need to go soon. Otherwise nice team

Planning on Moore -> Zaba/Kompany next week.

        I had to take a -8 due to suspensions/injuries/couldn't field an 11

        Chambers/Albrighton/Aguero -> Azpi/Yaya/Sakho

I think it will pay off long term, especially with so many taking hits this week

I have same dilema. Just that my defender is Hutton, who i have to play if i don't do Chambers --> Terry/Azpilicueta. I think i'll do my tranfers next gw, but yours Yun & Chester are a bit shittier choice this w/e. So i would do it for -4

Some players price rises / falls aren't possible due to them being 'locked' or so i've read.

What determines if a player is 'locked'?

It seems Dzeko is under this category??

I've gone for Rooney over Costa. With a lot of games in a small window I expect some rough games and with Utd's fixtures I've got a feeling Rooney will shine. It's going to be scary viewing though..

I don't know how I feel about Hazard over Costa. If you have both (Which I do) and Hazard assists Costa for a brace - Costa earns more points as C and you still get the Hazard points regardless.

Only issue is if Hazard goes down for a pen (assist) and then takes the pen..!

  22. Villan

For me it's a good idea to spread the Aguero money out with christmas rotation coming and have a proper strong squad.

So IMO Costa is NOT a good option. Too expensive for his point returns and could be rotated himself. I think Dzeko is a gamble too with Jovetic around, I'd personally wait and see with City strikers.

There are more high scoring midfielders this year than strikers (due to more points per goal, more likely to get BAPS and assists) so 5 good midfielders is my personal favourite.

    Thoughts??

    1. Shiner
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Agreed but you can still have a decent mid with Costa also...

      I have:

      Sanchez / Hazard / Sigurdson / Downing / Boyd

      Costa / Lukaku / Sakho

Still have funds to move Lukaku to Rooney next week with this. Also have Baines and Azpi in Def.... Who else would you have in mid to outscore Costa? Yaya....Ramsey......that's it.

      1. Villan
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

I don't think Boyd is a great option over xmas. You want a better player to come on when your players get rotated.

I think Yaya will outscore him. Ramsey, Silva and Eriksen could outscore him if Costa continues his poor form and deflects BAPS

        1. Shiner
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

I wont even play him - I have decent defenders that I will play instead that will not be rotated in a 4-3-3 if needed.

Costa isn't good option, he is not worth the price...b0llocks...going to lol so hard when he scores brace against Hull. Best striker in pl now when Aguero is inj.

He's just not in form, so people are going with in-form (c) choice. Nobody said that Costa is bad option.

His ownership is so high that its very risky not to own him for Hull, especially in the top10k

    A) For Free: Keep Fab, play Boyd, Chambers to Cresswell
    B) -4 points: Fab to Yaya, Chambers to Terry, bench Boyd.

Other two Chelsea are Hazard and Courtois.

    Thanks lads!!

Thanks, mate. As I said..already have Haz and not keen on any of City's defenders so I'm not going there but thanks for the suggestion!

Are you determined to get rid of Chambers?

I would be forced to play Yun this weekend if I kept him...I am also concerned with his security of starts.

Thanks, Doos. Will probably go the safer non-hit route and do that in the end.

I would say A, but B is looking really good. Not sure if two defenders from Chelsea is a way to go. Would rather have one defender + two of Fabs/Hazard/Costa

I think after seeing the way they have been playing I'd rather double their defense than their attack right now. Brain keeps telling me A but balls keep telling me B...tough call for me! Thanks for the reply.

very happy to have my transfers done!

    Marney n Aguero ---->>>> Hazard n Dzeko

feels like I nearly have the same time as week one now with Rooney and Dzeko! kicking it old school
