Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 16 – Sunday

Robin van Persie and Juan Mata grab a goal and assist apiece as United win for the sixth successive Gameweek. Wayne Rooney also notches in spite of a switch into central midfield against Liverpool. Wilfried Bony is in the goals again, though Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen both net as Spurs seal a late win at Swansea.

Van Persie Delivers Again

The Dutchman’s fine form continued yesterday as he bagged a goal and assist for the second successive Gameweek as United swept aside Liverpool at Old Trafford. Whilst Wayne Rooney kept his points ticking over with another goal, his owners will be somewhat concerned by a shift to central midfield – all the more so given that he started alongside Van Persie at St Mary’s on Monday evening.

Partnered by James Wilson instead, Van Persie’s haul took his tally to four goals and two assists in the last four matches. With three double-figure returns over that period, Van Persie has now overhauled Rooney as the top scoring United forward and, after a disappointing first few months, has now climbed to sixth amongst forwards in the FPL game. Over 116,000 FPL managers snapped him up as a Sergio Aguero replacement last week and with Villa, Newcastle, Spurs and Stoke in the next four, yesterday’s display suggest more suitors will be belatedly queuing up to acquire the in-form Van Persie before the next deadline is upon us.

Mata Stakes a Claim

Handed the role in “the hole” behind the front two, the Spaniard mirrored Van Persie’s goal and assist against Liverpool. Mata has now notched three times in his last five appearances for the Red Devils to suggest he may manage to retain his starting spot even when Angel di Maria is available once again – indeed, the pair both started the Gameweek 13 win over Hull before the Argentine limped off early. Yesterday’s 14-point haul took Mata above Di Maria in the FPL standings and despite flitting in and out of Van Gaal’s side for much of the season, the 7%-owned midfielder has now notched five times – only one less than Rooney.

De Gea the Red Devils’ Hero

The Spaniard’s exploits between the sticks once again proved the difference as Liverpool fired 19 shots without success at Old Trafford. Van Gaal’s side have now conceded just once in their last four home fixtures but in spite of De Gea’s heroics, they’ve managed just a single clean sheet on the road all season – back in Gameweek 3 at Burnley. Bearing in mind that three of their next four are away (avl, NEW, tot, sto), United will have to step up their resilience on the road if they are to justify any investment at the back.

Mignolet Finally Dropped by Rodgers

After a poor run of performances between the sticks, the Belgian has been “dropped indefinitely” by Brendan Rodgers. Mignolet was taken out of the firing line for yesterday’s loss as the Reds boss instead turned to Brad Jones behind his back-four – ironically, this comes at a time where Liverpool were starting to tighten up, with just one goal conceded in the three matches prior to their Old Trafford visit. Rodgers’ side have registered clean sheets in each of their last two at home and now have three Anfield encounter (ARS, SWA, LEI) and a trip to Burnley in the next four – for anyone brave enough to punt on their defence, Jones comes in at just 4.9 in FPL.

Kane Finds his Form

Sold on by over 5,000 FPL managers after scoring just twice in the previous six, the Spurs forward notched an early opener in yesterday’s win at the Liberty. With many Fantasy managers having plenty of spare cash due to Sergio Aguero’s injury, the 5.0-priced Kane has found himself on the periphery once again but now has the perfect chance to kick on from his Swansea display as the north London club prepare for back-to-back clashes against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester next.

Eriksen Steers Spurs to Victory

The Dane’s growing influence on Mauricio Pochettino’s side continues to reap reward after he served up a goal, assist and maximum bonus in yesterday’s narrow win. Since returning to the first-team in Gameweek 12, Eriksen has played every minute of the last five matches and has subsequently racked up 39 points, courtesy of three goals, a pair of assists and nine bonus points. His haul, allied with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s blank, took the former Ajax man up to third for midfielders – after a slow start to the campaign, he now has six strikes to his name, only one less than his total for 2013/14.

Prolific Bony Does it Again

The Ivorian took his tally to eight goals in 10 appearances by bagging the Swans’ only strike in the 2-1 defeat. In spite of that run of form, Bony, at just 8.5, is still only owned by 13% of FPL managers, with many Sigurdsson owners perhaps a little reluctant to double up on a side that has now picked up just four points from their last five fixtures. With the African Cup of Nations set to get underway on January 17, though, Bony’s impending departure is also a factor to consider when eyeing up his acquisition. The next four Gameweeks (hul, AVL, liv, qpr) would take us up to January 1 and offer plenty of chances to maintain his current form, whilst Garry Monk will also be hopeful of keeping Bony for the Swans’ Gameweek 21 home encounter with West Ham – which takes on January 10 – before he departs for Ivory Coast duties.

A was the resounding winner earlier, but C is by far the best according to RMT, and then there's David Silva!

Two questions for you guys! Would especially be interested in hearing from those who watched the United game yesterday 🙂

Have United turned the corner? Is an RVP revival in progress or is he just an overpriced forward in a potentially inconsistent team with better value elsewhere?

Is it too late to get Downing? Probably going to sell Chadli this week and I have to cash to upgrade to Ramsey/Eriksen/Sterling

RvP looks like his former self. He's confident and was very happy with his performances when interviewed pre match

Not too late for downing. With WHUs forwards he'll get a fair few assists and pop up with the odd goal

Downing only have 1 good fixture left tho, then 2 hard ones... could be a bit too late, dont think I would buy him now tbh...

I actually dont think United have been playing very well, but they do get the points and seems to score when they want/need.
I think I have to admit to myself that there are some good options in United...

I dont know if they've turned the corner as such, but I do expect RvP to score on a relatively consistent basis up until the Jan WC.

I think United have been very, very lucky of late. They are converting almost all their shots and De Gea is pulling off heroic saves every game. RVP will probably still do ok but he is still way over priced for me, so I would avoid.

Eriksen looks the best Chadli replacement for the next couple imo, then maybe switch to Sterling if LIV pick up form a bit

Agree, but a team that get 3 points every game even tho they dont play very well is tempting, when/if they actually start playing well they could score 3 goals pretty much every game.

The worry is though that they get low-scoring draws/wins with RVP not involved. If a team wins is relatively unimportant in FPL terms, apart form the effect it has on bonus points.

      Morning Tinkerman,
Realistically I think it looks a choice between Downing and Eriksen. Tough call between the two.
Tie breaker of the fixtures to come maybe?

On United; I think their attack is well worth consideration, with returning regular defenders I'd want to see what the favoured back line is when settled. Looks like LvG could have done his job to me.

Morning, really wanted Eriksen earlier in the season just before he got those two bench 1 pointers and was even going to double up with Chadli, but I guess that put me off. Now would seem to be a good chance to get him, but I'm worried they will both take turns playing, making both risky to own.

It seems to me that if Chadli is going to start it's going to be instead of Lamela and not instead of Eriksen. On United: they still look very poor and were lucky to win by that margin but RvP looked lively and sharp

Utd played how they have been recently. Sloppy play and didn't look too dangerous, didn't create many chances yet ended up with 3 points. It wasn't like Utd were constantly attacking Liverpool, they just sat back and DeGea happened to have a wonder game.

I know I am biased as a Liverpool fan but I thought we created more and from the way Utd played you wouldn't think they had won their last 5 games back to back. Serious troubles in defence still. If DeGea gets injured Utd are in trouble. Valencia and Young were very good going forward but exposed at the back. If we had of had an actual striker on the pitch, say Sturrige it would have been a different scoreline.

      Have untied turned the corner?

United were dire yesterday imo. They got a good goal early on against the run of play and which the keeper dived out of the way of. Their second goal was offside and this was the game changer imo giving Utd the safety net and releasing the huge pressure that was building. Their last goal was just as a result of Liverpool pushing to get back in the game. Liverpool in a bit of form would have scored 4 or 5 yesterday but degea was amazing to be fair.

The real quandary with utd is when do we stop saying these results with miraculous gk performances are luck and when do they become the norm? They are starting to remind me a lot of Liverpool last season with their rapid counter attacks and high conversion rates. Maybe they are just fresher than their opponents and all this time preparing for the next match with such quality players ensures they can target opposition weaknesses?

Personally I don't think this is fully the case just yet and I do think they have just been very fortunate on this recent run but I do expect them to do a Liverpool on it in the second half of the season where these big wins will come with big performances also. Exciting times ahead for Utd fans imo

Currently 20,000th, team for next week as it stands

    Heaton

    Clichy, A Williams, Bertrand

    Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Downing

    Benteke, Giroud, Costa

    Worth switching Costa to Rooney?

No! Rooney played as a CM yesterday. That means less goal threat and more yellow cards.

    a) Siggy & Hererra -> Eriksen & Silva

    b) Keep Siggy and do Herrera -> Yaya

    c) Keep Siggy and do Herrera -> Sanchez

Going to be an interesting captain choice this week, currently on Yaya, risky options - Kane, Downing, Sanchez.

Anyone know who they're definitely captaining?

Any news regarding Koscielny? Heard somewhere that he is out for 3 months which of course makes keeping Chambers a lot more appealing..

I remember last year FFS produced a nice infographic on 2 midfielders.

I thought it was a great way to display the stats, what happened to that 🙁

    Can we bring it back?

Not Pelle for sure. Kane is a good choice, since he frees up cash for you to upgrade in other areas of your team
