Captain Sensible – Gameweek 20

Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Same issue with me. Should I bench Kane, Eriksen or Boyd.

Or should I do Eriksen -> Sterling for a 1 week punt prior to wild card?

      Costa --> Rooney for me.

No United cover in there and they have some exceptional fixtures coming up, plus he's the one forward almost guaranteed to play and will be involved in a lot of what Utd do going forward.

Ha. Forgot I said this same thing last page.

Costa to Rooney would allow you to double up on CHE in midfield (i.e. Fab), which would cover all the points. Costa isn't going to score unless someone sets him up.

Yes sorry mate posted two queries.

I think that might be the answer - going to bring Fabregas it on the wildcard and need Costa's space. Also considering saving the FT and having two next week as that may allow me to delay the WC.

That is exactly what I am doing.

2 FTs next week (Yaya --> Silva, Zaba --> Trippier) then WC as late as poss to get Aguero in/monitor transfers in real life and FPL.

Not sure I'd use your wildcard yet, bench isn't the greatest but your 11 is quote strong.
I'd swap Azpi out to Terry or someone else, he's only one in the Chelski back 4 that is a rotation worry for me

      1. Courtois in the Rye
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Cheers - just about avoided wildcarding but that bench is the result!

Was considering a sideways move to Terry but I guess if I save the FT then I will have two next week and it might prolong the need to use the January wildcard and hopefully get Aguero and Walcott in on it.

        Thanks for the help.

Really fancy a Sterling (c) punt but how do I get him in?

    Sanchez // Silva // Hazard // Downing // Boyd

    1FT - 3.6M ITB

    1. Courtois in the Rye
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Has to be Downing doesn't it if you want him in? For Boyd you'd presumably have to downgrade a defender and take a hit.

Sanchez is an interesting one, most people are sitting on a lot of value in him, I think I'm getting rid in the January wildcard but unless you don't want him long term it's a bit short term to swap him out now.

Yeah, all of the above is basically my thinking too. I'm thinking possibly doing:

        Sanchez >>> Sterling

Arsenal don't have great fixtures and will bring Walcott in on the WC which I plan to use GW23

I feel like I've been waiting ages on Walcott to get back up to speed, will bring him in as soon as he starts as an explosive differential.

Some decent defender choices in wildcard potentially at not huge prices:

    Terry, Alderweireld, Shaw, Debuchy, Hutton

Still lets me have Hazard, Sigurdsson, Sterling, Sanchez, Aguero, Kane, Ausin with 3m in the bank.

I was looking at something very similar. I'm not sure about Shaw, I don't see him as a guaranteed starter but I like Alderweireld as a cheap way into Southampton's defence when the fixtures ease and Debuchy is coming in (albeit with an annoying propensity to pick up yellows).

When fit Shaw will be first choice LB. Before he was injured he played 6-7 in a row. I know Young is doing okay but that place is Shaw's to lose imo

If that's right then he's an absolute bargain, just not convinced that this season under LVG that he's going to be anything other than rotated. Excellent differential if he can also reproduce his attacking form from Southampton.

Is there anything I should know about Diouf?

    His ownership is 0.5%

His fixtures from 22-30 excluding City are very nice indeed

    Current line up -
    Guzan (Foster)
    Baines Azpi Reid (Naylor Wisdom)
    Yaya Silva Hazard Sanchez Downing
    Austin Bony (Kane)

Thinking about Yaya to Sterling and captaining, based on doubts about Yaya's fitness plus Sunderland's recent away form (4 clean sheets). Will need to get rid of Yaya next week anyway along with Bony due to ACON.

    Good idea?

Sunderland last 6 games - 5 of which were away - they have had
win 3-1 at Palace, 0-0 at Leicester, 0-0 at Liverpool, win 1-0 at Newcastle, 0-0 at Villa and a 0-0 at home to Chelsea.

    only 1 goal conceded
