Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Bony

Manchester City bolstered their forward options last week by snapping up Wilfried Bony from Swansea City. Arriving for a reported fee of £28m, the 26-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract for the champions and will be available for selection once his Africa Cup of Nations commitments with Ivory Coast come to an end.

Manuel Pellegrini took time out to discuss his swoop with the club’s official website and cited Bony’s excellent record in the Premier League as one of the key reasons for his acquisition:

“He is very difficult to mark because he is so strong. He is an intelligent footballer who has skill and power. His goals record has been excellent since he came to England. He adapted very quickly to the game here and I think he will settle in at City quickly. He will be a very good addition to our squad. We now have four top-class strikers and I am looking forward to seeing them work together.”

The History

Bony’s career got underway in 2006 with Ivory Coast outfit Issia Wazi. Having failed a trial at Liverpool a year later, the target man made his way to Czech club Sparta Prague, where he racked up 22 goals and five assists in 59 league matches, in addition to scoring 11 times in 20 European matches.

The Ivorian was on his travels midway through the 2010/11 season after being snapped up by Vitesse Arnhem. Bony netted just three times in seven appearances over the first few months but, after establishing himself as a first-team regular the following year, he bagged 17 goals and eight assists from 32 league and play-off matches and followed that up with an eye-catching 31 goals and eight assists from 30 league matches in 2012/13.

Bony’s exploits in the Eredivisie persuaded Swansea to shell out a club record £12m fee for his services in July 2013 and he wasted little time in settling at the Liberty. The Ivorian bagged 26 goals across all competitions for the Welsh club last year, producing 17 goals and four assists in the Premier League, before going on to deliver nine strikes and a pair of assists in 20 top-flight appearances this time around. On the international stage, the 26-year-old has also appeared 32 times for the Ivory Coast and found the net on 11 occasions.

The Prospects

As we’ve seen so often in the past, a move to the Etihad can sound the death knell for many a player’s Fantasy fortunes and in spite of his goal-getting abilities, the jury is out on whether Bony’s career at City will prove worthy of our consideration.

At Swansea, he was the first-choice forward in a lone striker system, providing the power, movement and guile to lead the line with devastating effect – no other player matched Bony’s 20 goals over the 2014 calendar year. In all likelihood, City’s embarrassment of riches up front should allow Pellegrini to roll out his preferred 4-2-2-2 on a regular basis but with Sergio Aguero an automatic pick, Bony is set to battle it out with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for pitch time alongside the Argentine.

With a starting role looking far from certain, the Ivorian’s prospects are also dented by a likely lack of spot-kicks. Five of Bony’s league goals for the Swans were converted penalties but, again, you’d expect Aguero to remain at the top of the pecking order, whilst Yaya Toure could hold onto his role as back-up option, leaving his compatriot out of the running.

What may fall in Bony’s favour, though, is his ability to steer clear of injury. On too many occasions over the past couple of years, City have had at least one forward sidelined through one problem or the other – with all three unavailable last month, Pellegrini was forced into adopting a false nine system to cope. Given that Jovetic and Dzeko have managed just over 1,300 minutes between them, there’s hope that Bony could benefit if he can steer clear of the treatment room – City have produced the highest number of attempts on goal this season and, when on the pitch, there’s no doubt he’ll be supplied with chances aplenty.

With doubts over his minutes, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” with this one. Depending on his nation’s progress in the Africa Cup of Nations, Bony may not be back on domestic duties until Gameweek 26, allowing us to build our Wildcard squads and assess the Etihad situation at a later date. Providing Aguero can keep fit, though, it’s difficult to see how the new boy will surpass the Argentine as our favoured City striker of choice in spite of a far more budget-friendly price tag.

From a Swansea perspective, Bony’s move currently puts the 6.5-priced Bafetimbi Gomis in the driving seat as the lone striker. With one goal to his name, though, the Frenchman has failed to replicate his predecessor’s clinical strike rate, whilst his weekend television interview – hinting at broken promises from the Swans hierarchy – hardly suggests all is well. It may well be that Garry Monk turns to loan signing Nelson Oliveira to solve his dilemma up top, then, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson owners will be hoping the Icelandic international can take over spot-kick duties as a result of the Ivorian’s departure.

    thoughts on this WC bunch?

    pantilimon / foster
    terry / baird / bertrand / jones / bellerin
hazard / sanchez / di maria / puncheon / elia
    kane / giroud / costa

    3.0 in the bank.

i've taken a few risks with jones and elia. already planning on shifting adm and elia for silva and eriksen/sterling in the coming weeks.

not for chelsea. had clichy and silva, but chelsea will score and i can see adm outscoring silva this wknd. he'll be back in for the hull game. aguero is still not 100%, will make the call on him or costa after the fa cup games.

Are Punch and Elia rotating? If so that's an interesting one.

If not then I very much dislike Punch as an option.

Haz to Oscar might allow you to buy Aguero for Giroud.

      Which Jones is that?

nope. elia is a 2 week gamble and will be out after qpr for silva.

        why no love for punch?

haz is a must for me and i'm happy to go with giroud for the rest of the season to be honest. aguero is still not 100% and will consider him over costa when the time comes.

united jones, decent fixtures. hopefully lvg plays a 442 and gives me clean sheet points.

          I'm a United fan and I wouldn't be touching Jones hehe 😛

Punch as a 4th mid is horrible, but as a 5th he's OK I guess.

Aguero's rarely 100% and still manages to get the points tbf. I mean even Costa was supposedly injured for 65% of the season so far and kept scoring. I consider Costa and Aguero essential.

i'm willing to take the risk, haha. clichy and naughton can easily be brought in.

what makes you say that though..? he shall be my 5th eventually.

true, but he failed against arsenal and i can see chelsea's defence being even better than they were. i think that having both of them limits point scoring opportunities elsewhere. 1 essential, 2 is a stretch for me.

Cheers, I felt same about Sunderland defence until I saw their recent CS tally and upcoming fixtures.

I'll be rotating Azpi like every other defender, and defo don't want to play him vs City.

                What about this alternate:

Azpi + Tadic to Alderweireld + Mata (rotating defence until Alder is back).

that is true, but it doesn't sit right with me..saying that i'll be eating my own words after 2 consecutive cleanies, haha.

                  i'd contemplate azpi + boyd > wollscheid + puncheon.

Cheers. I'm actually liking Alder + Mata more now because it leaves me 0.1m short of bringing in Walcott for Mata when he's fit (hoping I'll get the money from somewhere once he's fit - maybe Mata will score a few and rise 0.2!).

Walters played as a lone forward for Stoke last week and is pretty good for a few pts with good fixtures (and they have)...or Moses...or Puncheon as a tried and tested option with good fixtures as well..all under 6.0

Shoe ins for the wildcard are Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero, Chelsea defender (John Terry), Southampton defender (Ryan Bertrand), West Brom defender (Andre Wisdom), George Boyd

Working around that, it starts to get difficult. I've got Harry Kane in the final striker spot, then Raheem Sterling I may persevere with given his advanced position, potential value and (relative) differential status...

Yeah all that sounds sensible to me, Ed. I am even looking at Kane with some question marks. Ade being reinserted into the mix only brings about more question marks. If Kane is going to be in the hole I think it dents his prospects significantly. I also don't really think he and Ade would work well together if played up top in a 442 as they are pretty similar players. Having had Kane since he was 4.8 is a bit troublesome, though, and in looking at the strikers around the budget price I can't say that there is too much to be excited about. Bojan, Berahino, and Defoe all may come to the fore but all are pretty much punts at this point.

Sterling I would have no problem with, however. Think he's a good pick still.

No not saying that at all. I just really think that from an FPL perspective if he isn't the lone striker then his prospects are significantly, significantly dented. Every time I've seen him playing in the hole or with Soldado he's looked good in real life doing the best he can but I don't think it's conducive to loads of FPL points.

Was more taking the opportunity to slag off ade than really taking offence 😉

Having soldado or ade definitely reduces kane potential. I'm not sure whether I will keep on WC next week yet.

IMO every comment mourinho publicly makes has an agenda behind it. Sir Alex used to be the same.

With spurs every year sir Alex talked up what a good side we were and every year we used to roll over and let him tickle us on the tummy before they stuck the boot on and smashed several goals past us.

Hi folks, I would appreciate some feedback.
    ATM team is
    Pantilimon, Green.
    Baines, Terry, Clyne, Coloccini, O'Shea.
    Sanchez, Henderson, Downing, Siggurdsson, Marney.
    Aguero, Austin, Costa.
0.9 in the bank . 2 free transfers and both WC's.
    Thinking of Hendo > Chadli.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

2 WCs and 2fts. Aren't you the patient one 🙂

You need to use your jan WC next week or you lose it so you may as well use both FTs as otherwise you will lose one. So this is the week for punting

What about Austin > bojan and downing / siggy / hendo > cazorla

Id WC next week if I was you, you have too much money in defense including on your bench and not enough in midfield. Siggy / Downing / Hendo are too cheap and soft to have all 3 and you are cornered as its difficult to upgrade them.

Have a read of TriggerLips article on how to structure a squad which is also how I like to structure mine. Love him or hate him he knows how to play FPL

Wild carding in a 2 week break is so useless. Hardly any one pays attention to the game in the first week and half the guys will have forgotten who's done well a couple of weeks ago as we approach the deadline. So hard to get any price rises. Am certain Elia/Puncheon would have risen in price by now had it been the usual 5 days between game weeks.

Yes. Cazorla screams short term to me and points chasing. He has been so reliant on pens lately for his points and he's just not someone I really want. Ramsey, however, is someone I think will improve greatly with the added quality around him in midfield and with Giroud back. Think this might be the time to jump before everyone else has. Remember last spell when he got back fit for those few weeks he was banging them in for fun.

Didn't expect Ramsey to be popular 🙂 Gotta punt somewhere to try and rise in the ranks though! Double Southampton defense is a risk to be sure but I just feel like it's one worth taking. I am most concerned with Baird, honestly, because if he gets dropped I look to be in trouble.

      Morning.
      I actually quite like that.
The 4.2 5th mid is starting to make sense to me.
Being pro active and getting on Ramsey is a punt but could pay off massive.
It is always good to look ahead and try to be a bit different.
I feel you have taken 3 risks.
      1. No Chelsea defender
      2.Ramsey
      3. Gayle

Just my opinion but think 2 of those risks would be enough, maybe 3 too much. Maybe i am a little too conservative

No you are right. That is sensible talk, SAB. I have Terry but I just feel like it's time to cash in on those goals I caught and he's not going to be in the bonus points too much from here on in I feel like it may be better value for money going elsewhere and investing up front. Still not 100% decided on this...and it certainly will be a break from the template as I am sure the vast, vast majority of the top 10k will have a Chelsea defender.

Gayle I am less concerned with since he can become Bojan or even Ings or someone else soon. I am also as you know a Palace supporter so that would be nice 😀

Fair enough mate Getting on Ramsey early is the kind of move that could work out massively. Good point with the Gayle switch.
          Good luck with it

wouldn't mind seeing a chelsea defender in there, but hey your front 7 is very strong..looks very solid Walsh 🙂

Ramsey 😀 Hope he stays fit for the rest of the season...

Cheers AR! I miss owning Ramsey! Always feel like he is at his best when he is surrounded with quality...popping in for those late runs into the box and such.

Gayle plays on the wing, Lucas might get sold, ADM is out of form and where did the Ramsey punt come from? Not sure about your D either. All in all I think your team is way too punty

That made me smile. Right then, I see where you're coming from with all those things you said. I guess pointing out the worst case scenario of all of the above does bring me down to Earth a bit. Will continue to ponder. Hope this isn't coming from bitterness as I just overtook you by a point in the NZ Hockey league 😀

No it's all good. Just keeping it real, now is the time to be accurate and not be silly on a WC

No I appreciate where you're coming from. That is the angel on my shoulder talking and not the devil to whom I've been listening to more intently lately.

Pretty strong but the backline looks a Chelsea player light if i'm honest.

Rambo? Not sure about that one Walsh, although good idea on the double-up on Arsenal. I prefer to opt for Caz who's on pens and is on a blistering run of form, worst case scenario you switch if Rambo rings any alarms.

I like your backline a lot actually, the double up on Saints is a great differential to have and could possibly bring better value than an Ivan or Terry. Lucas to JWP? I feel for the future GW blanks, you'll need better bench cover.

Also, it seems you're in a great position if/when both Chelsea and Spuds have the blank GW.

Great frontline and good balance on your team overall though

Rambo is the left field type of a pick that will give me a rise. I just think that Cazorla's points are behind him and with all the competition for his spot around him more risk than reward. Seems a transfer waiting to happen as he has proven to be a pretty poor pick when he is playing out on the wing or really anywhere but in the hole and I am not convinced that he will last long in that position. I wish I had the funds for the Lucas to JWP....I guess just hoping to ride the defenders as my 1/2 bench spots and hope for the best with them. Perhaps will try and upgrade Lucas later on. Cheers for the detailed response as I have grown accustomed from you Zasa.

That's actually a great point on how Cazorla operates in the same fashion as Silva in the sense that both tend to get marginalized and are nearly obsolete on the wing (FPl of course). Still with Arteta out for a long while Caz still has pens, and yes the Ozil threat is looming, but I think this is Cazorla's spot to lose in the hole. He's definitely proven his worth when he's played there, though for sure something to keep an eye on when both Ozil and Wally are back.

Also, I would not classify Cazorla as a prototypical point chase, he's been a great option since the start of December when he's started in the hole. 4 goals, and 6 assists in his 12 matches(all competitions) is nothing to fret about. Keeping in mind 2 assists were in the UCL match against Dortmund (MotM). This is his spot Cazorla, Ozil has been nowhere near as effective in the hole and can't see how Arsene can risk disrupting that vital link right now.

It's the least I can do for all the eggs of wisdom you crack on my dilemmas all the time eh.

Valid counterpoints regarding Cazorla. Cheers mate. More food for thought.

Looking at this for a potential WC.

    Foster / Myhill

    Terry / PvA / Bellerin / Wollscheid / Baird

    Alexis / Haz / Cazorla / Sterling / Marney

    Kun / Costa / Kane

Granted, defense is cheap as chips. But does the front eight make up for it?
