Moving Target

Moving Target – Kyle Naughton

Swansea manager Garry Monk continued to strengthen his first-team squad last Thursday with the acquisition of defender Kyle Naughton from Tottenham on a three-and-a-half-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £5m. The 26-year-old is the third new face to arrive at the Liberty during the winter transfer window, following forward Nelson Oliveira and young playmaker Matt Grimes to the club.

Discussing his move with the local press, Naughton cited a lack of guaranteed pitch time as the main reason behind his decision to depart White Hart Lane, with the versatile full-back now looking to cement his place in Swansea’s first-team:

“My main aim is to start playing regular football again. I know it’s going to be a tough challenge because there are some very good players here, but that’s my goal. I actually played 34 games last season for Spurs, which is a fair amount. The main problem for me, however, was that I was still in and out of the team. That’s difficult at times. But now I just want to settle into life at Swansea and try to play regularly. It all comes down to playing football — after all, that’s my job.”

The History

A product of the Sheffield United youth academy, Naughton’s career kicked off on loan at Scottish side Gretna in January 2008, where he made 18 appearances before returning to his parent club. The full-back made his debut for the Blades the following season and was quick to catch the eye. After producing three goals and a trio of assists in 50 matches, he was named in the Championship Team of the Year and was snapped up by Spurs in a £9m deal along with fellow defender Kyle Walker.

Over his six years at White Hart Lane, it’s fair to saw that Naughton failed to convince under a series of managers. Loan spells at Middlesbrough (15 appearances), Leicester (34 appearances, five goals, three assists) and Norwich (32 appearances) ensued, with Naughton mustering just six assists in 75 outings for the north London club. With Walker sidelined for the first few months of the season, Naughton was still unable to nail down a starting role under new boss Mauricio Pochettino and turned out just five times in the league. On the international stage, the 26-year-old turned out nine times for the England Under 21 side between 2008-10.

The Prospects

With cash to splash as a result of Wilfried Bony’s move to City, Monk has been quick to target the full-back areas. Naughton’s arrival comes at a time where the Welsh club have also been linked with Norwich’s Martin Olsson, as Crystal Palace attempt to wrestle current left-back Neil Taylor from the Liberty.

After confirming the deal, the Swans boss was quick to lay down the challenge to his new defender and suggested Naughton has the opportunity to improve his patchy pitch time:

“I know he enjoyed his time at Tottenham, but he didn’t play quite as regularly as he would have wanted. Hopefully he can now stake a claim for a place in our starting XI. He adds quality to what we already have. I think he can help us improve as a team and he can improve as a player as well. I always want to recruit young, hungry players with a point to prove and Kyle is one of them. He comes here with good pedigree and he is experienced at the top level. I think the fact that we have got him is another sign of how far we have come.”

So far, Monk has mainly fielded Angel Rangel at right-back in his first full season at the helm. The Spaniard has started 17 of the opening 22 Gameweeks but a closer look at recent team sheets suggest he may be falling out of favour – he’s been named in the first XI in only three of the last six, with Monk turning to both Ashley Richards and Dwight Tiendalli as alternatives.

With his manager seemingly unconvinced over the other three right-backs (Richards has now been farmed out on loan to Fulham), Naughton certainly has the chance to become a regular in the Swansea starting line-up. Available for just 4.3 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he would offer the cheapest route into a defence that’s served up eight clean sheets over the campaign. Only Chelsea and Southampton have managed to keep out their opponents more often than Swansea so far, though it’s worth noting that all of their shut-outs have arrived against sides that currently sit in the bottom half of the table.

As speculation grows over Taylor’s future, Ashley Williams – at 5.3 – remains the most popular option, but with Wildcards in play, Naughton could come into contention as a viable cut-price option ahead of showdowns with Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley in the next five. Looking at our season fixture ticker, pairing him with Sunderland’s 4.2-priced Patrick van Aanholt and alternating according to ease of fixture over the next 11 Gameweeks (BUR, SUN, QPR, WBA, bur, hul, AVL, avl, HUL, CPL, lei) looks very favourable, whilst a home/away rotation with Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid (4.5) could also hold appeal in light of the Potters’ three clean sheets in the last five.

I'm not so sure. They have sooo many games I think it will be very difficult to figure out when he will get rotated. Could be a risk worth taking though. 6.0 nice a tidy route into their back line..but it will hurt when you see Filipe Luis' name on the team sheet in his place sometimes.

That's my worry ... Trying to figure out if a cheap entrance is better than all in with Ivan. The 1.2 price differential is huge.

If the other four defenders are solid enough without the liks of Baird or Bellerin I think I'd take a risk on on Azpil rather than plump all that extra in Ivan. That's an expensive clean sheet to pay for.

    B) Sterling > Cazorla
    C) Ings > Kane
    D) Fabi > Ospina (pants starting atm)

The Arsenal midfield is a bit of a nightmare now.

With their fixtures I think it makes sense to double up on attack, and for most of us Alexis will be one (partly cause he is superb and partly cause we have lots of value tied up there).

The 2nd slot could be filled by as many as 4 players imo.

    Santi
    Walcott
    Giroud
    Ozil

Santi looks the safest given he's on form and on pens, but I wonder if he'll be susceptible to some rotation now that Ozil is back.

Walcott is a high risk high reward pick for me. May still not be ready for 90 mins, but he is explosive and offers a directness that none of the other players do. I'm currently on him, knowing that it's a risk.

Giroud looks safe for starts and should plod along with a few assists and goals. But he frustrates a lot, and with Aguero, Costa & Kane up front, like many I'm loathed to lose any of them.

Ozil is probably assured the most gametime imo. Wenger loves him and despite all the flak he gets he makes a big difference to the team. Less goal threat but expect assists a plenty.

Oh, and how could I forget super Aaron Ramsey!!

Another good option who will play 90 mins when fully fit. If paired with Coq then he should have plenty of license to bomb forward and will get goals.

Excellent post, and I agree Sanchez is an absolute must-have right now! Am thinking of doubling up on the Arsenal midfield as well, maybe Sanchez/Cazorla or Sanchez/Wally instead. Still thinking about it, Ramsey is also another option but seems like out of sorts right now.

On wc. Planning to buy carzola n keep him until he is rotated for the first game. Sadly i think in that game he is rotated he will come out as a sub too.

By then i will reassess the options again. No1 is nailed in the team i think. And to a lesser extent there is welbeck and ox too to complicate the arsenal midfield which might result in more rotations

Too risky to go with Ospina and a 4.0m keeper? Not a fan of rotation but should I go with Hamer instead of the 4.0m just in case Ospina doesn't play? On that note, how long is schmeichel out for?

Yes, too risky. Get another playing keeper to partner Ospina, Krul at 4.4 is a pretty good option. Not sure if they rotate well though, Foster (WBA) is also a good option. Hamer might lose his starting place soon I've heard.

  8. VanDerStar

How much longer will Hamer be nailed on, and is Baird a good option in defence? Already have Wisdom, on my wildcard and thinking of doubling up since WBA look solid at the back again under Pulis. If he's nailed on, that's amazing value for 3.9 and could help me upgrade elsewhere (midfield or attack). Also ADM or Cazorla, thoughts?

When I last asked RMWCT, I got a few comments that my defence looks weak. PVA, Baird, Wasi, Alderweirld, Bellerin.

But although everyone likes a more balanced team, is a deliberately cheap defence a viable strategy? My thinking is this:

    1. with luck, a good home fixture, a cheapie can get a CS and outscore expensive defenders.

    2. Stars that score, and get more of the responsibility for free kicks, assists, playmaking are expensive and cheapies do not get the same opportunities when they are playing. So always go for expensive front 7.

    3. The analysis excludes players like Kane, Austin who are not cheapies, but underpriced since they are completely different players compared to July/August when they are priced.

what are odds baird starts--50%? is toby healthy? this gooner wishes bellerin nailed, but rotation risk...wasi, pva a bit puntish, compared to che/soton, don't you think?

Actually in terms of this strategy the personnel do not matter. Will find equivalent priced 5 players when I WC. So long as 3 are fit and playing it's good enough.

Anyone know the CS odds for this weekend?

Have a FT to use on a defender for 4.8 for one week before WC

thinking Monreal is probably the best shout vs Villa, maybe Trippier vs Sunderland

Which is best option for next 6 weeks?
              1)Silva+Kane
              2)Di Maria+Kane
              3)Chadli+Giroud

          Morning
Pretty set on this w/c team. Any obvious areas for improvement ? Too much money in def ?
          Forster + 4.0 (probably Myhill)
          Ivanovic - Jones - Schlupp - Bellerin - PVA
          Sanchez - Hazard - Cazorla - Downing - JWP
Costa - Pelle (Aguero GW 24) - Kane

Leaves .1 in the bank after Aguero.

          Likey or no likey ?

In that case, probably hang on to him then since he rotates perfectly with your 5th mid JWP. I have ditched Downing on my wildcard though, going for Puncheon or Elia instead. Still deciding on that one  lol

I'd rather Kun than ADM by far. He's the best FPL player there is who scores points consistently and with huge explosive potential. There are much better players to have a "differential" over. It's a risk to say the least
