Scout Report – Callum McManaman

Tony Pulis made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of West Brom by acquiring Callum McManaman from Wigan. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a three-and-a-half year contract, the 23-year-old winger admitted the lure of the English top flight was too good to turn down:

“I’m really made up to have joined. When the chance came to move to West Bromwich Albion, and return to the Premier League, I couldn’t turn it down. This is a great move for me and I hope the Albion fans will get to see the best of me. Albion are a great club, with a good tradition. I can’t wait to get going.”

His new manager was also delighted with the deal. After chasing the wide man’s signature for a number of days, Pulis took to the West Brom website to talk up his prospects:

“I’m delighted we’ve got Callum and I believe he will be an exciting addition to our numbers. Callum is a player who can improve our options and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

The History

The Merseyside-born McManaman started his youth career at Everton but after eight years at the Goodison club, was released back in 2006 and signed for the Latics following year.

After a couple of seasons in the reserves under Roberto Martinez, McManaman became Wigan’s youngest ever player to feature in the top flight after earning his league debut in May 2009. The then-Latics boss was somewhat cautious with the winger’s pitch time, though, and McManaman played just 11 times across all competitions over the following three seasons, supplying two goals and a pair of assists for the DW club. A three-month loan deal at Blackpool in 2011/12 produced two goals in 14 appearances before he returned to his parent club in time for the following campaign.

It’s fair to say that McManaman has struggled for consistency in the final third, though. The highlight of his time at Wigan was a man-of-the-match display in the 2013 FA Cup Final, where he helped clinch a shock win over Manchester City, but aside from that, his displays have been erratic. Over a total of 109 appearances across all competitions, he mustered 17 goals and eight assists, with five strikes in 23 Championship matches this season proving his most prolific. The Baggies new boy has made four appearances for the England Under-20 side but is yet to manage the step up to senior level.

The Prospects

Having started with the predominantly left-footed Chris Brunt on the Baggies right in both of his league matches in charge, Pulis is now clearly determined to add more width to his side’s play to stretch opposition backlines. McManaman’s pace and trickery on the ball certainly adds a new dimension to the Midlands side and it seems likely he’ll be handed the position on the right, though he’s versatile enough to be fielded as an inverted winger out left.

As we’ve witnessed already, Pulis isn’t afraid to alter his tactics in accordance with opponent. At home to Hull on his debut at the helm, he rolled out a 4-4-2 with Saido Berahino alongside Brown Ideye up top, but despite netting his side’s winner, the former was moved to the left flank away to Everton the following Gameweek as Pulis moved to 4-5-1. With more options out wide, though, it remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will continue to utilise Berahino on the flank for road trips, though the youngster’s lack of physical presence suggests he’s not as well equipped to lead the line as a lone striker compared to the more robust Ideye or Victor Anichebe.

Certainly, Pulis’ record so far – one goal and two clean sheets in two matches – suggests that, as we’d anticipated, West Brom’s defence may be the safest option for those looking to invest in the Hawthorns side. Given that Chris Baird dropped out of the starting XI for the weekend cup win at Birmingham, Andre Wisdom remains the backline option of choice for many and it may well be that with a natural right winger in front of him now, putting defenders on the back foot and creating space behind, he’ll will be afforded greater freedom to forage forward and support more attacks in the opponents’ half.

Likely to come in at no more than 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McManaman has showdowns against Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six to cement a starting role in the Baggies XI and given that no other West Brom midfielder has scored more than once this season, the new boy certainly has the chance to stake a claim. With the “Pulis effect” already taking effect at the back, though, and the likes of Jason Puncheon, Adam Johnson, Victor Moses and Eljero Elia all vying for our attentions in the budget midfield bracket, McManaman will need to up his game in order to become a genuine contender for our 15-man squads.

chance of Alexis on the bench? it's Villa at home and until Brighton, Alexis had played at least 80 minutes for club and country every match possible since mid October (23 matches, only 3 of which he didn't get subbed off at all) AND Wenger has all his midfield options back

Not been on here too much recently..

What are people going to do with Costa if he gets a 3 match ban?

      Kane, Aguero, ______
ADM, Sanchez, Hazard, Johnson, Boyd my other attackers

Just 1ft though so it will impact on my plans to double transfer next week!

It could just be Hazard, Sanchez, Wisdom and Isgrove left if Costa is suspended and Spurs&QPR have the DGW after the blank.

Not crazy, but it will be tough to pigeon hole which if any will be nailed. Think Pardew will take it game by game and be very flexible with the formations depending on opposition with so many options at his disposal as he has sort of shown he has done so far.

I actually think he may be the most nailed of the bunch but I'm not so sure if he is an FPL pick yet. He has looked great by my eye in these past two games small sample size regardless. He's got a lot in his bag.

I don't know what that means but okay! I'm not sure how they'd stack up against the rest of the league in terms of the next four but EVE lei NEW ARS is pretty tasty to me. Although I do expect zero clean sheets from those games for Palace.

It looks at Shots on Target by game and adjusts them for how good/bad the opposition were and also for if the game was home or away. Then it outputs a rating based on the sum of these numbers over the season.

Surely Everton's ridiculously bad defensive stats this year should play more of a weight than anything else though no? That is just a plum home fixture this season no two ways about it as far as I can tell.

I dont often like to use my past results when making points as I'm aware of the availability bias in it, but I will say Baines has been my best performer this season with 9.2ppg and I'm playing him again this week.

I know, I know, time for my downfall.

Toying around with a few possible WC drafts currently but with Costa's charge and uncertainty, if he is out - what do you think to this?

    Panti, Krul
    Fonte, Wollsheid, PVA, Wisdom, Baird
    ADM, Hazard, Sanchez, Punch, Boyd
    Giroud, Aguero, Falcao

£0.7ITB for getting Costa back probably after GW27

I'd probably consider spending that money in the bank also. Having Wisdom and Baird makes little sense to me. Maybe upgrade Baird to someone who you can rotate better with the rest of your back line.

Could always keep Downing instead of Punch, as another option, but Downing's stats vs top clubs aren't promising, although I have 0.5 value in him and do like him.

With regards to Baird -> ? Who might you suggest for

Honestly, Soton West Brom Sunderland and Stoke rotate pretty well just the three of them. I'd take a risk on Bellerin maybe as a fifth. Also...Schlupp could be a cheeky stash just for the future DGW and just leave him on the bench for the time being.

What are people going to do with Costa if he gets a 3 match ban?

    Foster, Myhill
    Terry, Clyne, Wasil, PVA, Wisdom
    ADM, Sanchez, Hazard, Johnson, Boyd
    Kane, Aguero, (Costa)

Just 1ft though, 0.0m so it will impact on my plans to save and double transfer next week!
    Still have my original WC.

Was planning to use my 1 FT and hold WC until next week. Planned Hutton > Bellerin for plump Arsenal fixture.

What are the odds of Costa dropping this week? I expect a lot of transfers as those with WC will drop him immediately (but their transfers do not count?).

May need to activate WC if so. Or take a -4. The golden rule is still never to take a -4 during January WC period?

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

Costa -> Giroud and Bellerin in on WC if he starts again.

I'm set on Costa > Falcao. 1 week punt pre-WC.

If I WC this week, I'd go Giroud, though he is donkey quality and I have not forgiven him for that -4 (c).

The risk reward is off the charts though if you don't captain Alexis as I'm sure he will be capped by a ridiculously high percentage of active players. If he blanks...of course you could soar in the rankings. He is being captained by so many for very good reason however...

He was deputising at CM while Whelan was injured, then when Whelan returned to fitness, this coincided with Bardsley getting injured, so Cameron slotted in to RB. Now that Whelan is back at CM and Bardsley is back at RB, Cameron goes back to the bench. I see many people fell into the trap with him, I tried advising people of this 2 weeks ago...

I'm a Chelsea fan, but you gotta admit he was gonna get one soon enough with the way he plays. Only thing I have to decide now is whether or not to take a -4 to switch him out for Aguero.

-4 against a Chelsea team that will most likely sit back and counter, I'd probably not.

If he played for Liverpool I'm sure I'd love him but he's a red card waiting to happen.

Yeah, probably not advisable for me to take the hit to do Costa to Aguero. I could just slot Boyd in for this Gameweek and go from there. Aguero can score well against any team, however. And, I used to always sit guys against Chelsea thinking it was the wise move, and they would often score. I've already done a -8 for this GW, though, so another -4 might not be wise however you slice and dice it.

Giroud will score more than Pelle, if I had to assume so. And, Terry brings more offensive goal threat than Azpi, though maybe not enough in the long run to justify the extra money. Clyne also brings that offensive threat, and Toby is out still with injury.....into next month. So, if I had to choose one, I'd say go Terry to Azpi.

Probably mid February at the earliest, according to my research.

I think 2) might be the only one worth considering. Sorry mate.

Pelle has 2 goals in the last 14 Prem games. Not quite sure I'd put any eggs of mine in that basket, but to each their own.

At the moment I'm on Rooney and ADM but will be taking Rooney out for Aguero this week.

Is going with no United unwise? I'm thinking that Eriksen is becoming essential and ADM isn't doing the business.

Thinking of Eriksen as essential is going quite overboard, JB. But, I don't think going without United is unwise. They have done nothing all year long to prove that their attack is lethal enough to earn investment despite the names on the backs of their jersey's and their weekly salaries.

Yea, maybe 'essential' is the new 'legend' getting thrown around too much. He's seeming integral in the Spurs attack. Then again don't like the idea of a Spurs double up 🙁

Eriksen, if you don't have Kane. No Spurs double-up, IMO

So on the side of the planet, Chile beat the U.S today, bittersweet feeling here. Who here watched the game? Gonzalez with a double!

Aye mate, the match was lost in the sea of the Barca game and the Spurs game. Thrilling match on all counts, 5 goals, and an extremely counter-attacking match. Would've been even better with both sides' A teams

Fwiw Shea was great, his club form is doing him wonders it seems

I kind of lost track of the USMNT lately. Kind of not feeling too pumped about the team right now and such. I'll get mine arse back in gear on that soon enough. If only the sports networks here covered the sport to any deservable degree......After the World Cup died down, it's been back to zero talk about footy in the good ole' US of A.

Only watched the first half. We looked good for the first time in a long while. Sad to hear of the collapse in the second half. Oh well.

Not sure the future is hugely bright for the USMNT. Not as much as it should be anyways, in my mind.

Aye, I can see why, but Klinsmann is a blessing in disguise for us, with his youth prospects coming into the forefront and with Green and Yedlin showing promise I think we'll have a good team for 2018. There's reason to be optimistic, there's a whole different mentality at USMNT now with a German international at the helm

True about the mentality. And, I guess it could take some time. After all, Klinsmann is basically tearing down the wall and building another one. It just amazes me that this huge country with so many people hasn't figured out a way to get a stronger national team. I mean, when I played back in the day, there were tons of true talents that I graced the pitch with. Problem has always been that the sport takes a huge backseat to other sports and there was never a proper system in recent decades to really reap the talent that is out there.

Yeah, we played great in the first half, Chile just put on a different gear the latter half and dominated all aspects of play. Medel was a force in the back and the 352 did wonders this game, great morale for the team, right now and will hopefully translate into the Copa America.

We still have a good team though, Klinsmann is still playing around with the team, I think this team will be a force soon

I hope so! I do like Klinsmann overall.
