Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 24 – The Weak

Having assessed those sides with favourable fixtures to follow, we turn our attentions to those with some tricky schedules over the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Burnley and Leicester face a tough task to steer clear of the drop zone, whilst Merseyside duo Liverpool and Everton brace themselves for for testing times ahead.

Burnley

“frisking

Sitting just one point clear of the bottom three, the Clarets have managed just a single win in the last 11 league fixtures, and their home meeting with fellow relegation battlers West Brom this weekend could prove vital, considering the schedule list that lies beyond. Further bottom of the table clashes with Hull and Aston Villa await in the final three matches of the season, but before then Sean Dyche’s men need to navigate their way through an evil schedule which involves meetings with United, Chelsea, Liverpool and City in the next six.

With just one shutout registered in their previous 12 outings, few were eyeing up the Clarets’ rearguard anyway and the forthcoming fixture list simply compounds matters in that department. Kieran Trippier, from whom so much was expected round these parts at the beginning of the campaign, has tallied just two assists thus far, and the full back’s chances of convincing Fantasy managers of his potential now looks spent. Further forward, George Boyd, so dependant as a fifth midfield option up until now, is unlikely to deliver too many points from the bench from here on in, whilst Danny Ings’ 4.5% ownership may well be searching for alternatives in the budget forward bracket even in spite of the striker’s three goals in his last four showings.

West Ham

“frisking

A 2-0 defeat to Liverpool last Saturday saw the Hammers topple down to eighth spot in the table, and judging by their upcoming schedule, Sam Allardyce’s side will have their work cut out to climb back up the rankings. The east Londoners face trips to Southampton, Spurs and Arsenal alongside home meetings with Man United and Chelsea in their next six, in a run of fixtures that is likely to determine whether they are destined for anything greater than mid-table obscurity come the conclusion of the season.

With injuries currently casting doubts over a number of their backline assets, Allardyce may have to rely on his attack to conjure up the points in the coming weeks. Stewart Downing has reached an ownership of over 28% on the back of his recent displays, though will be hard tasked to continue to justify that popularity from here on in. Up top, Andy Carroll’s renaissance in Claret and Blue has seen the Geordie fire in five goals in the last six league matches he has completed the full 90 minutes but Big Sam is sweating over his fitness after he was forced off through injury at the weekend. With the Hammers unable to field Diafra Sakho until the debacle with Senegal is resolved, Allardyce will be desperate for Carroll to recover, though whether he can continue to produce is another matter entirely.

Tottenham

“frisking

The irrepressible form of Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane has seen Spurs win six of their last eight league matches, but with the schedule stiffening from here on in, they now need to prove their top four credentials. Mauricio Pochettino’s men face Arsenal, Liverpool and West Ham in their next three, all of whom are currently rivalling them in the upper echelons of the table, before a blank Gameweek 27 arrives due to their Capital One Cup final commitments.

The aforementioned duo of Eriksen and Kane will have to be at their best then, as – despite tallying an imposing seven goals between them in the last four Gameweeks – they are still sure to be hard pushed to maintain that goal threat. Nonetheless, Kane certainly proved that he is up to the challenge the last time he faced one of the top sides, producing an 18-point haul against league leaders Chelsea. Owners are unlikely to ditch the young striker, then, though with the forthcoming blank looming ever closer, many will already be planning how to react; the fact that a double Gameweek 28 follows means that few are likely to get rid of their White Hart Lane assets, and instead will focus on building the strength of their benches over the coming weeks to account for the blank.

Be Wary Of…

Leicester
Let’s not kid ourselves: the Foxes’ assets were hardly top of anyone’s Watchlist anyway. But throw in trips to Arsenal, Everton and Man City and a blank Gameweek in their next five, and the case is surely closed. Leicester may only be three points away from safety, but that fixture list could see a gap open between themselves and their fellow relegation rivals over the next few weeks and leave them languishing at the foot of the table. Even the return of Riyad Mahrez from the African Cup of Nations is unlikely to have little impact upon their prospects, whilst Jeffrey Schlupp, who has made a case for inclusion in recent times thanks to his out of position spot in left midfield, is set to fall out of favour once again.

Liverpool
Fantasy managers may be scrambling to acquire the services of fit-again Daniel Sturridge, but one look at the fixture list tells you that the England striker, who marked his recovery with a goal at the weekend, faces a tough return. Trips to Everton and Southampton are coupled with Anfield encounters with Spurs and Man City, and the Reds’ newly found optimism could well be dissipated before we know it. Raheem Sterling has registered returns in four of his last five outings, but is another who will be hard tasked to reward his substantial ownership of the next four, whilst their backline – which have now recorded three consecutive shutouts in the league – is set to be firmly put to the test.

Everton
The Toffees are in a similar position to their Merseyside rivals. Having halted their losing streak with a battling draw against Man City, the Toffees then earned their first victory since Gameweek 16 at the weekend, but despite the upturn in fortunes, their time ahead looks stormy. Clashes with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all on the horizon, along with a tricky away day at Stoke, and Leighton Baines’ recent resurgence in form could be brought to a halt. Romelu Lukaku notched his first goal in nine against Crystal Palace last Saturday, but at 8.8 and with the schedule so poor, still has a long way to go until he is back in favour around these parts.

Hello all, please offer any suggestions as I am not sure whether or not I will be able to access internet before Saturday morning. I am contemplating an AdM -> Silva swap for -4 as I just have no confidence in AdM who has whu this week while Silva has HUL with a nice run of fixtures upcoming:

    Foster (Pants)
Ivanovic - Wasilewski - Clyne (PvA, Hutton)
Hazard - Sanchez - Cazorla - AdM (Boyd)
    Aguero (C) - Giroud - Kane

    0 FT -- 0.6 ITB

    All thoughts are appreciated.

    Afternoon all.
Interesting post on here a few days ago on what the optimal forward line is going forward. Didnt see any mention of Berahino. I think Kun - Giroud - Berahino is the way to go personally.

I certainly think there's ground to be made up in the Kane spot over the next 4 weeks.

Is there a chance Berahino has been anti-Pulis'd? Like he hasn't look nearly as threatening in Pulis's straight-jacketed hard-work-above-all-else formations...

Good point Anders - but he's in the England squad now and will surely be looking for a move to a bigger club next season. I really think he will kick on from now to May.

That's a good point. There's a nice big-fish-small-pond factor about him for sure. He's already got a bit of a selfish streak, and that might be magnified if he's playing to impress.

I also wonder what impact Callum McManaman will have on West Brom as an attacking unit.

Now thats a cracking point. Really rated him at wigan. Was a shrewd signing by Pulis - but then we'd expect nothing else from him.

Could help them stretch games, and also help them get the ball in the box.
I'm liking Berahino as a Kane placeholder until Spurs double more and more.

Big Papa Cisse enter your thinking, Cabaye4?

I'm still a bit stung from my Perez punt from your lot! - but have fond memories of Papiss in FPL and his goals per mins on pitch is compelling.

If he can nail down a start which I don't think he will.

We're unlikely to play 2 up top right now as it doesn't really suit the balance of the side and Ayoze has been one of the stars of our season. Can see Cisse playing a lot as impact sub.

I went Cabella last GW and turned out great, I think he's the best attacking option from an FPL view right now.

Nice fixtures for sure, but a pretty dreadful team!
So far Berahino is my preference but going to have a look at his role/position since Pulis took over in the stats.
He scored a hatty in the cup didn't he? Anyone with hatty potential needs looking at!

I don;t think Berahino looks that great after this week

Swansea at home. Swansea in general have been a pretty solid outfit (except when they play Chelsea) and only Chelsea and Saints have more CS this season

Sunderland away. Another well organised defence who haven't shipped many since that Saints debacle (16 in 15 GWs)

Southampton at home. Nothing needs saying about the Saints defence

2 of each, you rarely get much better than 50% split on home/away.

Palace are playing attacking football atm and City are always liable to ship a couple, not the worst attacking fixtures imo.

Thats the thing, Hull provided no real threat so New got to play open free flowing football.. But when Cry/City be attacking you from all sides with majority crowd behind them, New will have their tails between their legs.. Might get something from counter attacks but that'd be it..

I think so too, both Cry/City are vulnerable that way but will Cabella be involved thats the question, other pacey players in your team..

                    True, that's the risk.

With Siggy banned, Downing's horrible fixtures and Mane's doubts over playing time, I think he's the best of the remaining bunch at that price.

Last week to make transfers in Ultimate FPL.. Bought Walcott in last week and he done OK as captain but with Ozil looking sharp I think Walcott's the most likely to drop out once Sanchez is back and could end up making cameos for a lot of the season, not great for a game with no my transfers! Anyone think it's worth getting rid of him for somebody more nailed?

so barring any injuries I;m thinking to save the FT this GW so I can have 2 FTs to play with GW25 when we can see some lineups. Currently thinking of a short term punt on Jelly for GWs 25, 26 and 27 then he can become Kane in time for DGW with Eriksen or Oscar coming in as well.

Even if Leicester win, they're not guaranteed to have that DGW in GW28. Isn't there a Chelsea CL game around the corner?

For the *potential* DGW28 Aston Villa would need to beat Leics in the next round of the FA cup. If that happens then i think Sat 7th March would be free for Chels and Leics to play each other. That, presumably, would be in the same GW as the Tues before fixtures.

Really struggling to find a place for any Man U outfield player in my squad. RVP over-priced, ADM out of form and position, Mata in and out, Rooney out of position, Falcao trustworthy? Are any of them worth bringing in?

I've got ADM and just about sticking with him right now.

But I wouldn't buy any, ADM best of a bad bunch, at least he's nailed on in an attacking role.

For squad balance Im thinking of ADM in place of Eriksen but he's been awful. Running the risk of wildcarding with my opening 11 comprising 7 players from 3 clubs.

If those 3 clubs score lots of goals and keep lots of CS's you'll be fine!

Though I'd be wary of the blank with Eriksen.

What more could you want than Eriksen. Kicks, corners, great form, protected from rotation and in a team that is as attacking as any other in the prem right now. Oscar is good but I'd prefer Eriksen.

If Sanchez isnt looking likely to play, I could do:

    Sanchez + Puncheon ---> Cazorla + Sterling (-4) ???

Gives me a front 2 lines of:
    Hazard, Eriksen, Caz, Sterling, Boyd
    Austin, Aguero, Giroud.

Interesting. But if a team has injuries you'd expect a good manager to show flexibility and adjust the team structure to suit, no? i.e. Pellgrini's False 9 during injury crisis. Why not do the same when you have unusually healthy resources?

        1. Doolittle
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

Flexibility is one thing, but shoehorning a load of great attacking players in is like early Galacticos Madris strategy - overlooking the team for star names. Sanchez, Ozil, Walcott, Cazorla and Giroud all playing is exciting, but it would leave the team terribly unbalanced.

Sanchez is great on the right side of a front three, but he isn't a midfielder or winger.

Allardyce's first choice front two will be Carroll and Sakho, imo.

Carroll and Valencia partnership has been given a good chance and hasnt worked out too well.
